Hi all... What a year so far. I had to disappear for a while due to complications of pneumonia and heart issues, and then got pneumonia again! The medical bills are almost paid off, but it means I have been away and put back into the poor house again! :) On the bright side, The SAFT battery replacement PCBs for Gold Cards have arrived and they're perfect. On the downside, the bulk pack of sockets I ordered do not match the specs listed so I have RMA'd them. They were 0.7mm too tall and the SMD pads were not as specified on the drawing. The ATX power controller design is well tested now, and samples have been sent to two people here in the US to use in real-world situations - as much to test the instructions and packaging as the controller itself. Mercifully, the controller will be cheaper than I originally thought as I got a great deal on one of the more pricey components. I haven't done anything yet with the mplanes - I have some of the components in, but the rest will take a little longer. One setback is that my webserver motherboard up and died two weeks ago. I haven't got the clarity yet to look into it, so I am webless for the near future - it's not a priority for me. Looking on EBay the prices for the EPROM's are just a few pounds if M27C512-15 is the same thing, the 28 pin DIL socket less than a pound, the ROM codes Minerva Toolkit II are freely available so other than getting the code burnt on to the EPROM I have everything or am I missing something? If you buy an EPROM on eBay and it needs erasing, remove the label (you'll find letting the label soak in some lysol is the best way to do this) and then putting the EPROM with the window facing the sun for approx 30 mins should erase it. On a dull day it doesn't take longer, as UV goes right through clouds. To combine the top OS ROM image I suggest you: (pseudo-code alert!) base = ALCHP(32768) copy the upper OS ROM image to base copy the TK2 ROM image to base+16384 save base TO base+32767 to a file that will be your new ROM image. Burn the image to the EPROM. If you have really amazing eyesight you can look in the window while it's burning and what all the bits turning off! [1] Cut yourself a 10x15mm bit of label, and write something descriptive on it, THEN stick it onto the EPROM window. ProTip: leave a bit of backing extra so you can separate it easily. Store programmed EPROMS in a bit of conductive foam or wrapped in aluminium foil when not in a PCB - they're quite hardy, but it only takes 25v on a pin to change a bit, and you walking around generates a lot more than that. Thanks for the comments and apologies to Tony for any misunderstanding and for Malcolm I am not sure if a ZIF socket is needed for what I have in mind but thanks anyway. I only need the QL to run the boot file from floppy (or SD card if that becomes a real possibility) from a cold power up without the user having to press anything. The delay that Minerva offers and then boots anyway is fine for my needs, I just need to find away to realise its installation The comments including those below suggest I can take the existing two Sinclair QL ROMs out and replace with a (programmed and taped) EPROM with the Minerva code + Toolkit II and maybe SpeedScreen if there is room (its not essential) already in place and following the instructions from Peter G. this would all I need. Now unless I have got that wrong and I am sure somebody will tell me, my next step is to source the hardware for erasing and burning the EPROM. The Technical Manual states: 11.4 Add-on Card ROMs When the machine is booted, the operating system checks for plug-in ROM drivers by looking for the characteristic longword flag $4AFB0001 at the base of each location in which a ROM might be present. The beginning of a plug-in ROM should be in the following format: 00 $4AFB0001 (flag to indicate ROM is present) 04 pointer to list of BASIC procedures and functions 06 pointer to initialisation routine 08 string identifying the ROM The pointers are relative to the base of the ROM. If the list pointer is zero then there will be no attempt to link routines into SuperBASIC. There are also a few tools, which do that for you. I don't think so, but Minerva will - at least it shows the F1/F2 but presses F2 after an interval. but not what you want. I bet that though could be patched. The code is open source. Re burning you should look for a second hand QEPIII eprom programmer. It fits in the expansion slot so saves/reads from microdrive. I used an internally expanded QL and Romdisq so bypassed the microdrives. Hi all While continue to work on the Sinclair QL Preservation Project (SQPP) I was having a closer look at my Thor computers some weeks ago. I was surprised to see that the electronics showed at least two optical problems. 1. The printed circuit board (pcb) and the soldered components show some kind of patina. 2. Any hint or help is highly appreciated! The battery leak is pretty normal. It seems you have removed it already from the photos. If not then melt the solder one side at a time and pull out. I usually clean off the corrosion (like on the oscillator and some caps) with a toothbrish and iso-propyl alcohol. I also have a detergent based cleaner that is used with water. I guess a little liquid detergent (non-foaming) again with a toothbrush and cleaning off with a little water (and drying with a kitchen towel, and then putting in a hot place overnight would be OK. Maybe though what you are seeing is corrosion due to damp. I have seen similar things on some of my old QL boards. Talking (typing?) from not a lot of experience on the matter, the way I see it is this : There has been much talk of TCP running natively on the QL (of whichever variant) but after a flurry of initial development, silence! At present I have absolutely no idea what the current status of said project is - is it still viable, defunct, abandoned, or what - do you know ? Now, before any accusations/flames come flying in about those comments, I am not starting any flame wars here. I've developed software, commercial and otherwise, for the QL for many years (ok, not as much recently) and written articles for QL Review, QL Toady and IQLR magazines for more years that I care to remember and I *know* how disheartening it can be when you either lose interest or motivation in a project, or worse, cannot find the time. I have a number of projects on my hard drive that have stalled - Printermaster 2 (although Dilwyn has the source somewhere and I've given permission to distribute it if wanted) a PE version of Dilwyn's Printer Master software, ARSE (!) the ARchive Syntax Evaluator whihc was a 'compiler' project to read in Archive PRO and PRG(?) files, and screens, and convert them to something that DBAS could use (or it might have been Data Design - I forget!). I've even got a blank repository on SourceForge for my cross platform QStripper app, I just have not had the time to upload the current version. Plus my QDOS Internals web site is way behind on updates - need I go on. To answer your question: Technically, all the mentioned software is in working condition good enough for my own personal use. It also ran at two other places. The additional work required for a release is now harder than it was years ago, and it won't happen unless I have a free QL OS and all freedoms to implement maintain things the way I find suitable, and to link GPLed code on OS level. I have considered a release for QDOS Classic, but some limitiations of that OS, e.g. that it doesn't run on other QL hardware and is no longer maintained held me back. There is a bus to the real world at the end of his street. (They do charge a fare though). I saddens me that he rakes all this up again. Q Branch posted a 2000+ loss in the previous tax year and a 1000+ loss this year. We keep going and I devote hours of my time to writing for the magazine because we have a loyalty to the users that dates back over twelve years. All updates to SMSQ/E are free to anyone who has a copy and I have not sold a new copy in ages. All reasonable ways I have to implement OS level code for new hardware involve re-using free software and getting help from persons that won't be motivated by a proprietary OS. For peace sake the SMS license issue must rest, so the only way forward can be to re-invent the wheel and work on a free QL OS. This is of course a quite unsatisfactory task and the work on it crawls slowly. Some of my own work was done years ago, e.g. on native TCP/IP, and on a major hardware project I gave up during the license war. I started to forget, so things become increasingly difficult and unlikely. But I still have a little interest in major QL projects. I have both even though my laptop has a parallel port. I mentioned this to raise the point that it is not only in the QL world that you sometimes have unusable hardware. The largest PC company in the country is not interested in solving problems like that as they would rather sell you a new printer. More usable products being dumped in landfill. At least we QL-ers have been good recyclers. I just reasoned that if SH could produce a serial to parallel interface with all the electronics in the cable, then some bright spark could do something similar for a potentially bigger market. On the specific point of USB to parallel interfaces, Maplin's are currently selling these as a special offer. Hi, To stimulate the debate further. I still believe that new hardware stimulates new software, which all goes together to create activity and interest. The QL with the original QDOS and the newer SMSQ/E has an OS that is still interesting and capable of development. The form factor of the original QL black box has the dimensions of a modern keyboard, a convenient size; and many users and those with a retro interest coming to the QL for the first time regard the industrial design as cool in appearance. There have been many developments to the original specification of 128K RAM and 2 microdrives. Disk drive interfaces with extra RAM, Hard drive interfaces, etc. The Gold Card and Super Gold Card set the eventual standard of an expanded upgrade - yet they are now in short supply. The Emulators have taken the OS on to different platforms of hardware, like the PC. Acceptance has to be given to users who have many different needs and current set ups. With many users having several set ups in use. Both old and new users are stimulated by something new. Repeating a list that I gave earlier - probably 3 item ranges will be suited : 1 - £50 to £100 a card of some type, probably modular too, that most people would have an interest in to add to their existing system 2 - £100 to £200+ a card of some type, probably again modular too, that would significantly change the system - discarding the existing GC's and SGC's 3 - £300 to £400 an entirely, or almost entirely, new system of a small size, or even portable, using standard available parts as far as possible Rich Mellor recently gave me this link to an interesting hardware development for the BBC model B computer, that had 32K RAM. My wife has been cleaning up and found a box with a lot of QL stuff. An original QL! A keyboard mat in original package. Some keyboards and electronic boards. The total is not very heavy.
