Thank you for the how-to, I think this should go into the Qubes

You only need a GitHub account (which is free).

Here is more information how to contribute to the Qubes documentation:

I have written a Multimedia how-to about using Amazon Prime / Netflix /
Spotify and playing DVDs via Qubes (Debian based multimedia App-VM).

Maybe you just add your tidal how-to there?

While my how-to is finished it still doesn't made it to the main howto,

[qubes-users] Re: Problem installing Qubes 4rc1 on Lenovo Thinkpad X200 - Installer hangs with VT-d enabled / without: libxenlight failed to create new domain (with/without iommo-tweak)

2017-08-10 Thread 'P R' via qubes-users
Hello,

I've asked some days ago if someone has been able get Qubes OS 4rc1 up and
running on a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 (which works fine under Qubes 3.2)

Am 05.08.2017 11:25 nachm. schrieb "P R" :

I've installed Qubes 4 from USB with VT-d disabled which works but throws
an error in the end and which doesn't allow to start an AppVM:

'sys-firewall'

I have also tried to create a new Fedora 25 based AppVM (HVM and non-HVM)
and run into the same error.

I have enabled VT-d in the BIOS and rebooted, same error. I have
enabled/disabled iommu=igfx / no-igfx same problem.

Unfortunately it seems that I can't enable VT-d during Qubes installation
as the installer will halt with a black screen when VT-d is enabled.
See here for the hint regarding the Installation of Qubes 3.2 (?):
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/thinkpad-troubleshooting/

As I didn't have any trouble installing and running Qubes 3.2 on the X200
(with 8 GB RAM) I don't understand what is the problem with Qubes 4.
(...)

As I like to move forward I would like to know I the X200 can be used with
Qubes 4rc1 or if I need to get another machine (probably a X230 or T430).

Any feedback on this (X200 + Qubes 4.x = fail?)

Kind regards

I don't know enough to answer your question, but do you get any useful
additional information when you remove 'rhgb quiet' from the xen boot
parameters (which I assume is there)?

Hello,

I do understand using secureboot is not the perfect way but it's not always
possible to achieve this.

What we have is a custom bios that implements a nailed down version of
secureboot where we control the secure boot databases, So that should reduce
the risk of a 3rd party allowing software that we don't want to.

All that needs to be done from Qubes side to accomodate this is to make sure
the efi executable are signed and the make sure the ceriticate for the public
key is available. Once this is done we can add this to our database and we can
leave secureboot enable when we use Qubes.

So basically my question to the Qubes maintainers is if they will be supporting
this scenario at any point in time. If not we are forced to create another
scenario.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation,

Wim Vervoorn

We have similar BIOS, so check under Config or Security for "Virtualization".
You'll have to turn it off. After that, you should be able to install Qubes. If
you need an HVM (windows, for example), you'll need to turn Virtualization back
on.

I checked now the folder where the key should be. I have only
"RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-24-x86_64" and not that one for fedora 25. Maybe this
causes the problem. So I try now to install first the fedora 24 version and
than the upgrade at 25.

You shouldn't need to do that. I did the 23-25 update today, but I didn't
follow the link you posted. I used this one: sudo qubes-dom0-update
qubes-template-fedora-25 and then went on from the step number 6. If you don't
have a lot of configs on the template like me, this should work (I'm on RC3.2)

[qubes-users] Windows 7 problems (R3.2)

2017-08-10 Thread hugoncosta
Hey,

Installed everything, had to use this method
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/2488, and now it "works".

If I start the VM in Seemless GUI, it goes on but doesn't open any application
(with and without debug mode on).
If I start the VM without Seemless GUI, it only goes on with debug mode on,
otherwise it'll follow the above pattern.

Also, 2nd problem, I've installed MS Office, I've copied the shortcuts to the
"All Programs" folder and I'm unable to find them in the "Applications" tab in
the VM config. Is there anything I can do? Also, other installed programmes
don't appear on the list, it's not just Office.

Thanks for your time!

Hugo

Then this looks like I've missed some required steps in configuring my
Qubes 3.2 system.
I've got that apropos just after clean install. I've changed laptop a
month ago and have the
same missing apropos db.. Guess I've to upgrade something.
What steps are required to get this working by default?
Yes I can start man-db --no-purge , but why this is omitted by default?
BTW: qmemman - nothing in apropos even after man-db --no-purge .

Re: [qubes-users] Win 7, Qubes 3.2, qubes-windows-tools 3.2.2-3 struggles

2017-08-10 Thread Daniel Nelson
Did you ever make additional progress on your problems with QWT? I encountered
all the same issues you did, and the one I've not been able to solve is always
having to run my Win7 apps in debug mode, thus losing the possibility of lovely
seamless integration.

I tried what you suggested about backing out the latest QWT and installing the
previous version. I tried it first with simply uninstalling from my VM, with
quirky results, so I went ahead and created a fresh VM. This particular
behavior continues, though, also with the GUI agent outdated protocol error on
exit, and usually with two Win7 related QubesDB files that need to be manually
deleted prior to relaunching as well.

[qubes-users] How to create a minimal template of Debian and Fedora on Qubes 4.0-rc1

2017-08-10 Thread Dominique St-Pierre Boucher
Good morning,

I was able to install Qubes 4.0-rc1. I am happy with the result so far.

I would like to be able to create a minimal template for Debian and Fedora. Is
there an how-to or some documentation?

Also, is there a way to trim the template on this version?

Thanks

Dominique

[qubes-users] Upgrading fedora 23 to 25 Problem

2017-08-10 Thread frkla1234
Hi,

i installed now Qubes Os 3.2 and I began to upgrade now to fedora 25. I
followed the steps at the qubes os homepage (
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/template/fedora/upgrade-24-to-25/ ).

At step 3 I became following message after downloading the packages:

Total 1.3 GB
warning:
/var/cache/dnf/fedora-310.../packages/python2-pygpgme-0.3-18.fc25.x86_64.rpm:

The download packages were saved in cache until the next succesful transaction.
You can remove chached packages by executing 'dnf clean packages'

I don't know how to continue. This warning is not at the qubes homepage
explained.

I`m not good in computer things and my English is not the best one, so please
write clear :-)

Thanks!

I have a Yoga S1 and I had the same problem. I was only able to install Qubes
R3.2, also without Virtualization. After installing it, I'm able to use it
though. I've already posted about this here:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3001

Meanwhile, I'd do what I did - stick to R3.2

Re: [qubes-users] Qubes not loading latest installed kernel...? + How to remove old kernel versions?

2017-08-10 Thread Tao Effect
Any update on this?

I just encountered a similar problem:

- Qubes 3.2 indicated there was an update for dom0
- I updated via the graphical utility, installed kernel
4.9.35-19.pvops.qubes.x86_64
- Rebooted

Upon reboot, `uname -a` indicates I'm still running the old kernel.

So I tried manually running: sudo qubes-dom0-update
--enablerepo=qubes-dom0-unstable kernel kernel-qubes-vm --best --allowerasing

It downloaded stuff (for some reason from "Fedora 23" repo even though I
thought I'd updated to Fedora 25? Or is that separate - just for TemplateVM?)
and then said, among other things:

"Package kernel-qubes-vm-1000:4.9.35-19.pvops.qubes.x86_64 is already
installed, skipping"

Makes no sense! What do I do?

Like this fellow below, I do not appear to have any GRUB related things on my
system being used.

Is there a way to force the machine to switch to using GRUB? Perhaps some BIOS
option?

This is the machine I'm using:

Thanks for any help!

Re: [qubes-users] Qubes not loading latest installed kernel...? + How to remove old kernel versions?

2017-08-10 Thread Tao Effect
Something else I just noticed:

/boot contains initramfs-4.9.35-19.pvops.qubes.x86_64.img

BUT /boot/eft/EFI/qubes does not!

Both /boot and /boot/efi/EFI/qubes contain
"initramfs-4.8.12-12.pvops.qubes.x86_64.img", and the two files differ when
doing a diff on them.

The /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/xen.cfg file does not have an entry for the 4.9 kernel,
but it does have 2 entries for 4.4.14 and 1 entry for 4.8.

There does not appear to be any difference between the boot arguments for the 3
entries other than the version numbers of the kernels (that I can spot with my
eyes alone).

I'm scared of modifying the xen.cfg file for 2 reasons:

1. The fact that the .img files for 4.8 kernels in /boot and
/boot/efi/EFI/qubes are different means that I don't know what that difference
is, and I can't just copy the 4.9 kernel from /boot into the other directory.

2. The fellow below tried modifying his xen.cfg file manually and broke his
machine. I would like to avoid that.

Any help greatly appreciated!
