Darn, I wish I'd had this knowledge 20 years ago when I got my Heron. I still have it, pinched ears and slipping seat post and all. It's still a nice bike, I converted to a 650 runabout-town bike a few years ago. But that seat post slippage and busted binder bolt routine was kind of a pain.

I was in a similar situation to you not long ago. I had a heavily Rivendell-influenced Fuji touring and a Kona Smoke. Last summer I was able to stop by Rivendell and ride a Clem and an Appaloosa. I loved them both about the same, except that I'm not crazy about the look of the step-thru Clem.
