[RBW] Re: Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I've had the Park for ages, and my recent Pedro's kit purchase has a cutter.
Bike shops use separate tools for housing and inner wire, but I use one cutter
for both. The trick when cutting housing is to put a piece of scrap wire in the
end to keep the hole round and cut. Then grab a flat file to smooth it out a
bit. An added benefit on the Park tool is it has a squisher for
shifter/brake-wire end caps.

Spend the money, get the tool. You'll be shocked at how much of a difference it
makes.

Re: [RBW] Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Eric Norris
I use Park’s cable cutter for cables, but I prefer using a Dremel and a small
cutting wheel for the housing. The Park cutter kind of munches up the housings;
a cutting wheel makes a nice, straight, flat cut.

[RBW] Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I've been using a cheapo tool to cut cables and housing forever, but it's
always a clunky process that results in frayed cables and/or frustration. I
hate cutting housing so much that I just left my housing way too long when I
recently changed my shifters.

Just did a quick search to see what's out there and it looks like $20-40 bucks
for something specific to bikes for cutting cable/housing. Does anyone have
experiences they'd like to share? Do I want a bike specific cable cutter or can
I get a generic hardware store version? Is it worth it to spend the extra few
$$ on this tool or do they all work the same?

If Riv sold one, I'd just buy that version.

[RBW] For sale- 2, 59cm Clems

2017-08-08 Thread jim lynchIII
Hello to All! Severe spinal arthritis forces the sale of my two Clems. Both
are H models,59cm. Both have Schwalbe Big Apple tires, ergonomic grips, Planet
Bike Fenders, and MKS King Grip pedals The green one has a Planet Bike rear
rack.
The Butternut is in pristine showroom condition, and I'm asking $800 for him.
The Green is in very good condition, but has touched up stone chips on the
steering head tube. Purely cosmetic, but they are there. Asking $425 for him.
I can ship at the buyers expense. Happy to answer any questions and send
pictures.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Lee Legrand
Hi Joe,

I recommend getting separate cutters for both housing and cables. Get a
rotary tool for cutting the housing and a good cable cutter for cables.
Using a typical cable cutter closes the metal casing of the housing and
does not leave a square edge. In addition, you will need a awl to reopen
the housing hole to allow cables to run thru and metal file to get a square
edge. Get a good quality cable cutter that last to cut the cables and you
should be good.

[RBW] Re: 59 vs. 52 Clem L

2017-08-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I got my Cheviot-green 52 CLEM L (complete) today; a couple of interesting
notes: It uses a 9-speed drivetrain instead of 8 from the first run, and the
SunRace upside-down-backwards friction shifters are the higher-level series
with a click or friction option on the left-supposed-to-be-right shifter. If
you want to go full click on the rear you can rearrange the shifters to outside
the bar. Also, the spoke nipples are several colors for a neat Speedblend
effect (does anyone remember Speedblend tires?)

I'll get pics tomorrow when I've installed saddle, fenders and rack and get
outside.

[RBW] Re: Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
FWIW, master mechanics I know use the best cutters available (Park Pro and
Felco in equal numbers) and still use a dental pick to round out the
housing ends.

I have a Dremel and love using it for many jobs. But too much time is
wasted pulling it out, attaching the cutting wheel, plugging it in and then
putting it all way when I can cut housing in less than 30 seconds with good
Park cutters (the CN-10) and a dental pick. The CN-10 can be found for
under $30 if you do a bit of search or use a coupon. You'll never regret
spending the money for quality tools!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA who owns a lot of cheap tools, but the tools I use the
most are quality tools because it's not worth the repeated frustration of
using cheap tools!

[RBW] Advice for selling a Saluki/Hilsen?

2017-08-08 Thread G.E.
I'm in need of some assistance and am hoping some of you here might have
thoughts and be able to offer suggestions. I purchased a NOS Saluki/Hilsen
from Riv at the beginning of the year and built it up. It's been ridden,
but not much (it's a second Riv for me). My husband and I agreed that we
would each sell a bicycle in order to make space and help fund the purchase
of a tandem we can ride together. Unfortunately for me, this is the only
bike I can really see letting go of in the current bunch since it functions
mostly as a duplicate as far as purpose in the bike fold goes.

Anyway... long story short, I need some help in regard to a selling price.
Obviously, I can calculate out the cost of what I paid for the frame/fork
and all the parts, but I'm looking for realistic numbers for a (mostly)
whole bike. I don't intend to sell the saddle, pedals, or any carrying
stuff like bags, baskets, racks, but otherwise it has fenders and all the
parts necessary for riding. I don't want to be unrealistic about a price,
but if you have thoughts on what these are typically going for these days,
I would appreciate your feedback. Additionally, if you have thoughts on a
good place(s) to try to list it, that would be helpful too. I'm trying to
avoid eBay if I can help it.

Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts.

I'll repeat my tip 'cause I think it got missed: Cutting the housing (Park
cutter) with a scrap piece of cable inside helps keep the end round. A dental
pick to finish it is still a good idea.

[RBW] Re: Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Broccoli Cog
I just replaced a pair of Park CN-10's with a new pair. Mine had become dull
from cutting a multitude of other things from cables to zipties. FWIW In order
to improve longevity my LBS recommended using the CN-10 for housing only and
have a quality side cutter on hand for cables. I would avoid using them, like I
did, for many things.

[RBW] Re: Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Brett Callahan
Hi Tim,

I use two cheapo tools I bought on Amazon. I'll try to link to them below,
but here's what I've learned: spend a few bucks more. Pedro's tools makes a
cable cutter that's widely available for $25 or so that I'm sure is better.
My cable cutter works okay, but has started dulling after one bike's worth
of cable cutting. The 'wire nipper' struggles to cut the steel inner of
Jagwire brake cable housing. If you want 'just good enough', you can get by
with these, but I'll be upgrading in the future.

Sunyou cable cutter

Cheers,

[RBW] Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Surlyprof
I use the Park and, as Eric pointed out, it does smash the ends. Really sturdy
with nice crimpers for cable ends. It helps to rotate them while cutting but I
still end up reopening the ends with an awl. I'm sure an ice pick or any
similar tool will do.

2017-08-08 Thread Garth
While the Roadini as is doesn't have the length I'd need and it's not meant for
sweep back bars, that blue shade sure is pudy ! All this gives me more
ideas for a custom though ☺ A sweep back(and higher) bar pure road bike ! I
imagine the exact frame dimensions of my Bomba except with lighter tubes(no 2tt
either) and clearances for tires like the Roadini and a road double crank. No
bolt-uprightness, more like 40-60 degrees give or take, which is how my Bomba
is for me.

[RBW] Re: Saluki Links

2017-08-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I really 42mm GB EL Hetres with the sks fenders for a while. Tight but
manageable. I've been running the 1.75" parimotos for about 2 years now under
berthoud steel fenders and want to compass tires next... I saw the new BSP 42's
are going to be wider and tube less compatible which has me worried about
space. I may try it anyway, I think the critical spot is at the chainstay yoke
and I could probably take a Dremel to the fender there and open up some room.

If not maybe I'll go back to the Hetres. The parimotos are fine but don't have
that 'magic'... (Or amazing marketing)

When I do it I'll share pictures. My A23 rims are supposedly also tubeless
ready so I might mess around with that to.

[RBW] Re: N minus 2 plus 1

2017-08-08 Thread Garth
I will add this about the sensation called "sporty" from this perspctive..
I find with 700c tires that tires in the 28-38mm range offer the best all
around balance of everything. For road bikes, I grew up riding 27 x 1" to
1-1/4" tires and later raced on 700c 25mm tires. I have nothing but positive
memories of such riding. The feel of a real race bike with even narrow wheels
and tires is utter joy. So I give pause to this trend of wider is better, it's
not, its just wider, another sensation of riding. The riding never changes
however !

Everyone will understand this, when you feel joy spring from your heart, you
can be doing anything and it will be joyous. The doing does not spring forth
the joy, the doing happens because of it. The joy already existed and the doing
became irresistable and literally burst forth ☺ Such is the living of Life.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Fender recommendations

2017-08-08 Thread Brett Callahan
Hi John,

I've used the Velo Orange aluminum fenders on three different bikes and
find them to be great. Lightweight, easier to install than SKS. I have a
pair of their 65mm fenders in the garage awaiting their new bike. I'll be
running these with Compass Snoqualmie Pass as well. Like the other VO
fenders, they seem well made, and these big ones have a clever cutout in
the rear drive side so as not to interfere with the chain. I've not had
trouble with them doing light trails, but if you're worried about front
fender failure, (VO doesn't include a quick release) you can get a quick
release from Portland Design Works and use it with the VO stays.

Cheers,
Brett

[RBW] Atlantis Fender recommendations

I'm using 52mm Velo Orange Zeppelins on Snoqualmie Pass tires with no issues.
They're not overly roomy but I'm OK with what I've got. They'd be good with
anything smaller, i.e., 42, 40, or 38. I've wrangled with Honjo installations
before and these were much easier, even though they employ the same type of
attachment.

Remember when Riv stuff came on paper in the mail and 650B was that crazy idea
that would never catch on? Good times!

[RBW] FS: Nicely Built Orange 56 Hillborne, $1350

2017-08-08 Thread allenmichael
No pictures yet, but decided to sell his past weekend after a successful
ride through the Tillamook forest on a new-to-me Jones Bike.

The bike was built by Rivendell for a friend of mine (who purchased for his
father). I'm the second owner. It has not seen much use and is in excellent
condition.

>From memory (and may need some added detail): Rich Lesnick wheels,
Albatross bars, cork grips, nitto stem and seat post, Brooks saddle, side
pull brakes, Sugino triple, grip king pedals.

price does not include shipping. The bike is in Portland, Oregon. I could
probably deliver it to many places in California or Southern Oregon.
