Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-01-30 Thread Jim Bronson
I've been a LoupLoup user for a while now. I took them off and tried the
old PariMotos, because they were cheaper and lighter. Holy cow you think
Compass are flat magnets? I got 5 flats in 2 days on a 600K. Or was it
6? I dunno but any more and I would have been patching tubes. And/or
hitchhiking.

I went back to LoupLoup Passes standard casing and I'm happy with them.

Use Barlow Pass on the Redwood also. Happy with those too.

[RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-01-30 Thread Lynne Fitz
I tried the Cypres (well, those are Grand Bois, not Compass), and they were
flat magnets.

Mostly the Compass 650B tires are too fat for my bike, but my new fender
installation seems to allow the Loup Loup Pass. Maybe when I need new tires
I’ll spring for them.

[RBW] Re: Which tire was ridden on your first excursion into 650b?

2018-01-30 Thread Lynne Fitz
NIfty Swifties on Synergy rims. Went through those, Michelin Axial Raids (and
I’d STILL be using them if they were still in production!), Michelin (don’t
remember, all black) on Aerohead rims (the tire and rim were not a good
combination), Grand Bois Cypres, Soma Xpress (still have those on the Bleriot)
and have pretty much settled on the Hutchinsons. Although after my new fender
installation on the Sweetpea, it appears I can run the 38mm Compass tires.
I’ll have to cogitate on that.

The Velocity A23 rims are my current favorite.

[RBW] Are you using your real name on here?

I’m happy you do, since I met you in Redlands, and I can put a face to the name!

In all honesty, I assumed “lun gim fong” was a real name until quite recently.

I’m pretty sure I use my real name, and the “biketinker” handle isn’t my
display name. I sign all my posts. I haven’t hidden my identity online since I
had a dial up modem and high school friends on a BBS.

In the old days of Flickr and Kogswell, and Alex Wetmore’s list, I had a couple
of internet friends who turned out to be a single person using different
handles! That was an amusing realization. “Branding, people!”

Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-01-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I stopped using Rat Trap Pass standard casing, 26x2.3 - they were nice, but
I didn't have an epiphany riding them - they were expensive, and I felt did
not earn their keep. I switched to Schwalbe Thunder Burts, and those tires
are amazing.

I stopped using Snoqualmie Pass standard casing, 700x44 - they were decent,
but they were also not epiphany-inducing and didn't feel worth the premium
expense, and I switched to a Soma Shikoro that I picked up at a clearance
sale.

I started using Barlow Pass, 700x38, and I will continue to use and buy
them for as long as I have a bike that can run 'em - they are perfect.

I have White square tapers on 2 bikes and they have been problem free. I
built those bikes from bare frame so I spent $$ for the White cranks. If I
was converting an existing bike to ss, I'd use the existing crank, maybe
with a narrower spindle and possibly add a wide/narrow chainring. In my
experience, cranks are pretty low maintenance (except for the occasional
annoying creak), and pretty durable. I've seen broken cranks, but I've
never broken one. I've used square taper, and various external bearing
cranks, and I don't think I can tell a difference in terms of getting power
to the wheel.

Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-01-30 Thread Eric Daume
I really like the way Compass tires ride, but I don't have any in my
current fleet. My knocks against Compass tires:

- they're hard to mount, it takes several tries to get the bead on
straight, if I can
- they're expensive

My Vittoria Hyper something tires feel 85% as good at 30% of the price, and
mount up fine on the first try.

[RBW] Re: Fancy grip-making (starring my bike!)

2018-01-30 Thread Joe Bernard
I've had a similar experience with padding/cushion, although more in the
clothing area than grips. After many years of trying to get comfortable with
padded shorts and gloves, I discovered that my body was struggling through the
cushion barrier to get to the contact point on the bicycle, creating much pain.
Once I removed those barriers the pain stopped. That doesn't mean I want to
ride a bare handlebar - and hard cork doesn't work - but I can't ride a
massive, cushioned grip, either. Grant's wrapping job looks like a reasonable
compromise between the two extremes..I'll holler after I get the bike back and
go for some rides.

I love the look of these! Good call, Joe!

I find the cushion of bars fascinating. I have the opposite experience from
most. My bars are wrapped with a single layer of cotton (no shelac). My hands
fall asleep sometimes when I wear my boiled wool mittens (equal to a very thick
layer of wool felt), but never when I am bare handed. Am I somehow gripping
harder to compensate for the cushy feel? I’ve no idea. But my hands stay warm,
so it works. Shrug. Grin.

[RBW] Re: Seeking Single Speed Crank Recomendations

2018-01-30 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bill brings up the excellent point of the meaning of “best value.” To me value
means: provides high ride quality, experience, dependibility, and longevity at
a cost commensorate with the work required to achieve that. Compass tires are
my best value tire, though they cost more per mile than quite a few tires,
simply because the ride quality and experience far outweighs their higher cost
and the (in my experience) slight increase in flats (since I ride tubes, easily
repairable in the field).

I generally keep coming back to two options, interestingly diametrically
opposed in cost. Sugino, as Bill suggests. Or White Industries MR30. I’ll keep
playing, and I may well ride this full season with the Suginos and decide after
having the option of a full year of bikepacking fixed with the option of a
bailout granny ring.

Re: [RBW] Anaerobic Power, Aerobic Effort

2018-01-30 Thread Patrick Moore
I tend to agree with this, and will only add that, just perhaps, one
difference with riding a freewheel is that you become habituated -- ie, do
it without thinking -- to keeping your pedaling ahead of the drivetrain in
a way that you don't with a freewheel, which may -- "may" -- allow just
enough hesitation or lag that it is noticeable by its absence.

Just a guess here. The only evidence I have for this is that riding fixed
somehow does feel more efficient than riding in a similar but fw gear (I do
that all the time on a derailleur bike, since I tend not to shift a great
deal for hills), and #2, that after getting off a fixed and getting on a
coater, I tend to pedal squares for a few hundred yards.

Re: [RBW] Anaerobic Power, Aerobic Effort

2018-01-30 Thread Daniel M
If you put continuous forward pressure on a freewheel drivetrain, there is NO
difference from putting continuous forward pressure on a fixed gear drivetrain.
The top of the chain is taut and the bottom is slack; there is simply no
"freewheel effect" or, for that matter, any difference at all between the two
drivetrains when you are applying forward pressure. I've seen so many
descriptions and claims that a fixed drivetrain allows you to apply torque
through greater portion of the pedal stroke and this is just nonsense; if you
apply continuous forward pressure, the rear cog has no "knowledge" of whether
it will freewheel or not when that pressure is released.

This is not to say there isn't something magic about riding a fixed gear. I can
imagine that if you get tired and begin to let off pressure at the top/bottom
of your power stroke so as to be momentarily torque-neutral, the fixed
drivetrain carrying the pedals past the top/bottom might be welcome, but that
only applies if you stop applying forward pressure. I also suspect that fixed
gear setups often end up on relatively lightweight steel frames, and that being
forced to mash up hills in high gears enables people to experience frame flex
("planing", but I'm not a fan of that term) for the first time. If planing is a
thing, then this DOES in fact allow you to transmit more power per stroke, but
this is due to the (elastic potential) energy momentarily stored in the frame
at max flex, not due to some drivetrain magic.

IRD has one

I have two single speeds with Sugino single RD-2 cranks in silver (130

centered and much more expensive.

I have an NOS Spidel (144 BCD Campy Copy) with an NOS SR drillium chainring

single chainring bolts.

Re: [RBW] Seeking Single Speed Crank Recomendations

2018-01-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Any 110 bcd crank can be run ss with a short enough bb and the ring either
on the outside or the inside position. Me, I use the old Pro 5 Vis which
are available new (expensive) and used (onlist, cheapish). And there are
track cranks out there that would work fine and are reasonably priced; I
can't recall who makes it, but there was a recent, retro-style single made
by a relatively well known vendor that was discussed on list, RBW or Bob,
not too long ago.

Heck, even a 130 bcd can be run single; my Redline Monocog 29er had a
Truvative (I think) road crank with a 42 t ring, and you can find and fit
38 t rings for these (used one, with a 52, on the Ram's 7410 crank).

When I hear the phrase 'best value', I assume the meaning is: most utility
for the lowest cost.

If that is what you mean by 'best value', then in my opinion, the greatest
utility for the lowest cost would be to remove the second chainring that is
bothering you, and replace the double-length chainring bolts with
single-length chainring bolts. Total cost: about $6.

Here's a link to some inexpensive single-length chainring bolts: PORKCHOP!

Paul: they are discontinuing their crankset, so not considering it.

White Ind: pricy but a very attractive idea, either with their square taper or

[RBW] Re: Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-01-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
RJM is right that anybody endeavoring to build the lightest possible bike won’t
choose a steel frame. That said, there are still plenty of people who want a
steel frame AND want it to weigh under 20 pounds.

A sub 20 pound off-road ready Legolas should be straightforward. A sub 19 pound
Roadeo with nothing dumb on it should also be straightforward. You just need to
decide to do it, or not. Rackless, fenderless and lightless makes it much
easier.

Contemplating your 26 pound road bike and wishing it was <20 pounds is a little
more complicated and costly:

Take it completely apart
Weigh every single thing
Make sure the sum of the weights makes sense
Eliminate stuff and replace parts with lighter choices until the sum is where
you want it to be
Put it back together

Factoring in the headset weight differences and the weight differences
between a Nitto Technomic 427g vs. a Bontrager race lite 189g road stem
(just pulling these out of thin air) you might see a half pound difference.
But, there is something about the classic styling of a nice quill stem on a
roadeo that really sets it off. Plus, if you were going to be a weight
weenie, I don't think you would be choosing a steel frame anyway.

Eric, my experience was very similar to yours. Col de Vies on Weinmann
ZAC19 rims, which have even deeper wells than the Synergy and are

2018-01-30 Thread Fullylugged
I started with Grand Bois Cypres 32s. Funny how fat they seemed then, compared
to the 25s on my 700 race bike. Now 32 is the skinniest I'll ride. I have RBW
Speedblends 34s (that measure a bit smaller) on one bike, Grand Bois Ourson 36s
on another, and Soma Express 38s (that also measure a bit smaller) on another.
My 26" ram still rides on the 32mm Panaracer style it originally came with. My
"racy" wheels :) I have Pari-Moto 38s on the shelf but they're not on
anything right now. Nice and comfy, but not very durable.

[RBW] Re: Amyone make a headset with no plastic ring on the locknut?

2018-01-30 Thread Garth
Sure, but you don't need a new headset. I'm not even sure you need another
locknut without a hands-on experience. But for sake of a discussion alone, you
can get just the replacement locknut. It need not be specifically for that
headset, because Tange is using what appears to be the steel locknut from the
$10 Passage headset for the Tange/Riv/IRD Roller Drive version.

The Levin CDS uses a smaller, inside only seal ring that is not essential to
it's use. It is not the same design as the Passage/Riv/IRD one.
http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/333222399679/1439/Tange-Levin-CDS-1-Steel.html

or just but the whole CDS headset and use the locknut only and save the rest
for future use, for one you have another top race and bearing that will works
with the Riv/IRD model you have. Note, the pics that many websites show for the
CDS model are actually of the NJS model, w/o a ring. They don't have a seal for
they assume track use.

Or if the whole idea of plastic hangs you up, pun intended !, just the Levin
NJS one as mentioned and use it's locknut alone and save the rest.
http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/333222399626/1433/Tange-Tange-Levin-NJS-1.html

Again, you do not need a new headset ! Locknuts for these types of similar
headsets are fairly universal. As long as you have the intended number of open
threads upon which to place the locknut, the height of the locknut itself above
the threading need not be precise.

You can see all the Tange headsets here, minus the Riv/IRD version .
