Re: [RBW] Anyone done a metric century or longer on Albas?

2013-06-22 Thread Robert Harrison
Recently I ride the Haleiwa Metric Century on my Quickbeam with Albas and then
did a couple of 75-80 mile rides on my Hunqapillar with Albas. All three rides
included some climbing (actually not all that much on the HMC) and parts
heading into stiff tradewinds. It was all good and I was glad to have them.

I can get aero enough for me with them and can find enough varying positions to
keep me happy.

I'm thinking of getting the new 'staches but not for either of those two bikes.

Aloha, Bob

[RBW] Re: Carradice

Carradice has outstanding customer service. They've always been
way-above-and-beyond helpful whenever I've contacted them about minor stuff
with old bags (issues that had nothing to do with quality). They really
do stand behind their goods.

As for quick-release capability, I like the Nitto saddlebag QR that Riv
sells along with a regular rack or Mark's rack.I have this setup on two
different bikes and have never had a problem with it.

Long story short, a couple months ago one of the pins that activates the

 Nice.

[RBW] Re: Saluki love tires

2013-06-22 Thread Michael Hechmer
The place that looks tight is not so much the width, but the rear length.
It looks like the tire might hit the too long rear bolt that honjo vo

clearance. These fenders came to me used and I don't know if the stays
have been cut. I'll have too pull them apart and inspect the ends.

Re: [RBW] Compass 26 tire vs. Soma New Express 26 tire.

2013-06-22 Thread Michael Hechmer
I wonder about road noise from the Compass 26 tire. M Schwalbe Marathon
Racers are quite noisy, especially considering that they don't come with a
lot of tread and most of that has been worn off of my tires. Tires on a
tandem wear out fast and I'm extra cautious because I suspect my stoker is
only good for one crash.

Both Compass 26″ tires are made by Panaracer using their Pasela molds.
However, what goes into the mold is very different from a Pasela: We use
a high-end casing and ultra-grippy tread rubber – in fact, the same
materials as for the Grand Bois tires. The result is a 26″ tire that
offers the ride and feel of a high-end tire, which is very different
from the common 26-inch “slick” tires that are made with sturdy casings
 and mediocre rubber.

So: I would expect the tread shape is the same, but the materials are
 most likely different.

[RBW] Anyone done a metric century or longer on Albas?

2013-06-22 Thread bobish
I did a lot of 40-60 milers last summer. I find them comfortable for any
distance and can't possibly imagine them getting less comfortable for longer
distances (assuming of course, you like riding them to begin with). I have
many, many years on these bars now--ever since since 2006, when I wrote my blog
post The Albatross Handlebar Fan Club. I've tried other h-bars since but
always gone back to a-bars. My feeling is that they provide the best of all
worlds (at least for me). Need to relax the back and neck and take some weight
of wrists and hands? Grab the very ends. That's great for a steep descent with
hard braking. Gets the weight back on the bike. Need to get aero or just
stretch out? Grab the bends out front. Need to switch up between the two
positions? Grab right at where the brake levers are or just above. I usually
have 2 fingers in front of the brake clamp and 2 behind. That position is my
favorite for climbing (especially out of the saddle). Mix those three up and a
couple of others, make sure you have a wide saddle, and all is well. That's
all. Nothing else to say on this.

[RBW] Riv Thumbie Options Question - And Give Away!

2013-06-22 Thread Matthew J
Opted to move shifters from the DT to the handle bar on my next bike*.

Riv offers Paul Thumbies set up to work with Shimano bar end or with Riv
Silver Shifters. Among my vintage hoard are more Simplex Retrofriction and
Campy DT shifters than any human should be allowed. Believe Campy and
Retrofriction will work with the Silver Shifter set. Anyone try this?

OTOH, am going with the Jeff Jones modified Shimano 9 speed to 6 speed
cassette. I understand indexing will work on the correct set up. What do
those using the Thumbie / Shimano combo think of the shifting?

Now for the give away - As you may have deduced from the preceding
paragraph, this bike will be a 1x6 (and 1 depending on where I use it).
Whichever combo I go with, I will not need the front thumbie. I suppose
someone out there is doing a 2x or 3x 1 set up and can use a front only
thumbie. Or maybe someone wants to shift the front from the top of the bar
and the rear from the bar end or DT. Or most likely, someone managed to
bust a front thumbie but the rear is working perfect. Whichever, when I
get my order will happily ship the unused rear thumbie free of cost to
anyone who actually needs it. ( I know all to well from personal
experience hoarding is a disease - I don't want to contribute to anyone
else's malady ;). I will be making my order soon, so can send the other
half soon (wonder if Riv would agree to mail to you direct?)

*Bike is not a Riv, but will be made by near to Riv builder Curtis Inglis.
I will be reposting build pics in the Velocipedesalon bikes section
Retrotec string if anyone is interested.

[RBW] Hammered finish and lugged handlebars anyone?

Would be interesting if Rivendell had lugged versions and hammered versions
of their bars.

Just a lug collar at the ends of the drops and staches. Maybe at the clamp
sleeve, too. Maybe the sleeve could be a lug itself.

Hammered finish would be cool on Albas and Boscos, etc.
Bullmeeses coul easily take lugs at the stem/bar junctions.

The Alba Bling Bar
Noodle Bling Bar
Albastache Bling Bar, etc.

You think they would sell?
Might make it hard to wrap though.

Soma's are cheaper by about ten to 20 bucks and come in terracotta and

tire, made by Panaracer. Does anyone know for sure?
The terra cotta would look groovy on my olive green Atlantis.;)

I understand the Saluki and Homer have similar 'issues' with Hetres and fenders.
I'm switching to Dia Comp 750 center pulls from the silver side pulls as it

All this commerce in Rambouillets! I'd be interested to learn particular
reasons why people are selling and why they are buying -- ie, why you want
to get rid of, or acquire, a Ram rather than something else.

I am beginning to think that the Ram, like the Atlantis and the Quickbeam,
is a definitive Rivendell, ie, it fills a particular niche (pavement, but
capable of modestly wide tires and fenders and of some light, firm dirt) in
a particularly Rivendellian way and therefore has a unique identity.
Perhaps the Roadeo fits this niche, too but is it as versatile while being
better on pavement? I wonder if the Sam is not more of a compromise -- not
hugely more off road capable, not as good on pavement. I wonder if the
Saluki is a 650b Ram?

Re: [RBW] WTB: Rivendell Rambouillet

2013-06-22 Thread Michael Hechmer
Now owning both a Ram a Saluki I would answer yes, the Saluki is a 650B
Ram, or perhaps Romulus. Mine has cantis, which is perfect for me. I
would bet the two tube sets are identical. Both of mine are 62's but the
Saluki has a slightly longer TT, which eliminates the slight TCO I have
with the Ram Honjos. The Ram is a bit quicker but not faster. The Saluki
a bit more stable and comfortable. The Ram does just fine on dirt roads
with 29 mm Cerfs, but the Saluki excels at that with Pari Motos. My Ram is
set up with lighter wheels, no rear rack, and a CD White crank, which
probably accounts for most of the perceived difference.

There are three things about riding I most enjoy and these two bikes excel
at them. First, I want to meld with a bike. A great bike feels like an
extension of myself. The Ram Saluki do that to perfection. Second, I
revel in the gyroscopic feel of cycling. As I have aged (and I am rapidly
approaching ancient!) I more and more realize it is not the absolute speed
that provides exhilaration, but the combination of speed, fluidity, and
security that produces that feeling of freedom and release. These bikes
respond when I step on the gas and they both downhill like rockets on
rails. Third, I want a machine that almost seems to disappear under me.
No strange noises, no balky shifting, no complaining; just smooth
response. Ginger Fred. How can you tell the dancer from the dance? Oh
yea, and then there's that stressless comfort while cruising the
countryside.

I can't imagine selling either my Ram or my Saluki. The only problem they
ever give me is deciding which one to ride! Thank you Grant.

Michael

My PBH, by the way, is approx. 96cm and it fits me perfectly with an 11cm
Tallus stem.

Better pictures of the frame and fork can now be found here, as I've
finally stripped down the bike to the f/f:

Thanks so much for checking it out.

2013-06-22 Thread boomer

have a used pair I could purchase? It's for a mt bike to urban commuter
conversion. I'm open to almost any width.

Thanks. ph. Reply to author or email me at philrhu at the big G in the cloud.

I stand up all the time with Albas. As long as the stem is out a bit more than
drops, I find them almost easier to stand with. Extra room and leverage.

I can maintain momentum and avoid dropping a ring, but I find any bars that
are higher than the saddle make it feel difficult to rock the bike and
maintain that momentum cadence. Vermont is full of moguls that put a

[RBW] Water!

2013-06-22 Thread Patrick Moore
In just 20 1/2 miles (plus half an hour at the mid-point standing in the
sun and wind talking to someone about his neat '70s Vitus Vangal French
import and hearing about his early '80s Sumitomo titanium):

1 28 oz bottle.
50 oz from a 100 oz Platypus bladder (fits nicely into the saddlebag).
At the terminus: 25.4 oz of Foster's ale.
About 95F, 5% humidity, NW wind 15 with stronger gusts. My cap was just
damp around the brow. My eyeballs feel like jerky. Rayon Hawaiian shirts
are great in this sort of weather!

Better than drops. Ymmv. No way to know unless you try.

Hey, this was a great ride! My first Brevet, and my longest single-day ride
yet, 75 miles in all. So may Rivs in the ride, plus lots of RBW influence,
from bags, racks, clothing, bits 'n pieces. Most fun was meeting other
riders and chatting while riding. I knew it would be a good day when I
espied a Rivendell Custom atop a car on the Bay Bridge at 6:20 in the
morning, which turned out to be Esteban, up from San Diego. Our frames were
nearly twins.

It seems that for some, a 115k ride is a just a warmup. I found it
exhausting, but still fun and ready for more. Thanks enormously to the SFR
who organized the ride, AND fed the riders at the end with sloppy Joes,
salad, and beer. I'll be on more rides, you bet.

And if the guy who offered to trade a Hilsen *and* a Hunqapillar for my

I like the dtt. Your price seems ok. Maybe not many tall folks looking.
I smile every time I see the ahh.

Re: [RBW] WTB: Rivendell Rambouillet

2013-06-22 Thread rw1911
Patrick,

I can't speak for the sellers, but for me the Rambouillet is possibly the
best all around bike I have owned. Some have commented that it's
overbuilt, but at 6'2 230, it might as well be a skinny tubed rando bike
that so many rave about. I also own a lugged Dave Kirk Terraplane built
with modern Campy which is lighter/faster and a Match built 700c Rivendell
All-Rounder. (predecessor to the Atlantis)

The Terraplane constantly pushes me to ride faster and is great when I'm in
that mood. I find the All-Rounder a bit sluggish for unloaded, general road
riding. The Rambouillet splits the difference. It's relatively fast on the
road and more than capable on trails and fire roads.

A Roadeo might work as I have not had a need for racks. As Michael
confirms, I believe the Saluki is pretty close to the Ram/Hilsen in 650. I
have never ridden a Hillborne, but imagine it would be heavier/slower along
the lines or the All-Rounder. (and the DTT for my size prevents me from
trying one)

The only reason I'm looking is with an 89 PBH, I am at the top of the
recommended range for the 60 and the bottom for the 62. Even though I like
my bars well bellow the saddle, I think going up to a 62 might provide a
slightly better fit.

Michael,

Thanks for reminding me of a 62 out there that's not for sale. :-)

 Just thinking out loud.

In addition to an outright purchase, I'd also be open to trading my blue
 60cm for your 62cm.

If you have (or know of) one, drop me a line and let's talk.
