My question: Will the Silver shifters mount directly to the 7800 bar end

I'd rather just get the downtube versions and reuse the 7800 bar end

passed four 'bros' snorting cocaine off a frisbee together. I have to say,

As the sun set, the bugs came out. And they came like a plague. There were
so man mosquitoes that the idea of camping seemed ludicrous. So after
consulting a map, we decided we'd make for a small wooden warming shack in
the far corner of the park that is typically used as a warming station of
snowmobiles and skiers. I'd been to cabins like this before and they're
usually pretty nice - wood stove, stack of fire wood, sometimes even an
outhouse. It sounded like a great plan. So we hit the park trails in the
dark and went hunting for the cabin.

It started well. The trail had knee-high grass as it wasn't used in summer
(was a dedicated snowmobile trail), but the ground was quite smooth. We
descended for about 20 minutes, which made me nervous. It's a boggy part of
the country, and going down means getting wet. Sure enough, the trail got a
bit mushy. Then really mushy. My headlight suddenly hit something that
reflected the light back up into the trees. Crap - the trail disappeared
into a bog! We couldn't see how far it went, and any time spent standing
around would result in hoards of mosquitoes attacking us, so we said screw
it and pedalled full speed into the water. Thankfully it ended 20 feet
later around the corner and the ground was hard enough to ride. We hit a
few of these water sections, some of which were too deep to ride and
required carrying our bikes across to avoid water getting into our
bearings. Half an hour later and a good bit of fumbling around in the
woods, we found the cabin. We celebrated our victory, hung our shoes up to
dry and passed around a few beers. Tomorrow we'd try to finish the trail
 and ride home.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vFjfcRcx4QE/VcjH4yEaRCI/Lzc/Orly3gOy17o/s1600/_DSC4520.jpg

We woke up to a warm sunny morning and the sounds of squirrels running
around the roof of the cabin. Jason had got up at 5am to ride to work for 7
(bummer!) and had taken a trail directly to the highway outside the park.
So it was just Graham and I left to finish the trail.

We can do this, I thought. It's just wet boots. However, soon enough we
hit *The Bog*. This was a whole new obstacle - the trail ended and there
was about 75 yards of water and reeds. Keep in mind, this trail is meant
for winter, so it was built with no regard to water crossings. There is
nothing that bugs me as much as being forced to turn back, so thinking to
myself What Would Manny Do, I took a few exploratory steps into *The

The tires -- what can I say? Made by Panracer, but paper thin -- they make
the Parigi Roubaix look like thick cardboard.

One hundred and seventy grams with rubber band on my Pelouze! Six ethereal

Tomorrow, God willing, I will pick up the (Riv content '99 Joe gofast)
wheels that I had rebuilt from 650C -- I paid the $35 rush fee for 2 day
delivery. Hell, I should have tried to build them myself, except it would
have taken longer to get the Revolutions -- yes, with alloy nipples. (This
will be a super super super light wheelset; no dish to compromise things.

The tires will ineluctably require sealant, but that's no big deal when
they are fully 14 grams lighter even than 650C X 23 Michelin PR 4s. The
re-used, cleaned up 559 Sun M14A rims weigh ~380 compared to the very
 similar but eyeletted 650C ME14As' 425 grams. That's a 60 gram/2 oz weight
saving over an already very light wheel; and this promises much better
comfort and much less anxiety about our common 4+ pavement expansion
 cracks.

The Tonyon lock weighs 1 3/4 lb and has not the appearance, at least, of
Kryptonite's quality, but for the price it's worth a try. It is certainly
 compact.

Hopefully I'll get at least a quick ride on the Elks tomorrow; having been
riding Pro Race 3s on the gofast, I will be very eager to learn the
 difference with the Elks.

found this review about a year ago and it was what got me in the market for
a QB/S1 since the Bendix requires an OLD of 120mm. As you all know there
isn't another production bike quite like it with this spacing. I've been
riding the QB with the Bendix for about three months, so this is a short
term review, will provide a more comprehensive review a the end of the
 season.

 http://www.63xc.com/genng/bikesmith.htm

The upside to the modified Bendix hub are the following:
 1. Cruising gear is fixed, nearly 100% efficiency, same as any other
fixed gear bike. Rides just like one.
 2. Shift on the fly, no need to get off the bike, loosen wheel, move
 chain... so on.
 3. Down shift is 25% of the cruising gear. For me this means I'm using
the cruising gear like normal, up and down rolling hills, easily 90% of the
ride, if not more. The low gear is there for steep up hills or sustained
head winds. As an example I got in a 33 mile ride on Sunday afternoon, at
the most 1 to 2 miles were in the low gear. All the rest were about working
 the fixed gear.
 4. Simplicity, few moving parts within the hub and as Bobby B. noted,
they are stout. I've rebuilt a couple Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hubs and
the modified Bendix has a fraction of the parts.

As with everything there are downsides:
 1. DO NOT DOWN SHIFT AT SPEED! This is a two speed fixed hub, meaning
you shift from one fixed gear to another fixed gear. Going from a cadence
of 80 to 100 could throw you off the bike. I found this out the hard way,
luckily I rode it out and didn't crash, but it was pretty scary. Up shift
isn't as critical, just ease up some.
 2. This is a bolt on hub, you need to carry wrenches to take the wheel
off should you need to fix a flat.
 3. It is heavy, at around 3 pounds. At least the weight is at the hub
so the rotational forces don't play into the energy to move it.
 4. The 18 tooth cog is integral to the hub and can not be changed. You
have to change your chain ring to make adjustments to the gear ratio.
 5. The cog requires an 1/8 inch chain.
 6. Requires some sort of friction mode shifter, but the choice is
yours. I'm using an old school Campy down tube shifter and cable guide,
very minimal set up, forward is for the low gear, back is the cruising
 gear.
 7. Because of the shift cable, I'm not likely to loosen and move the
wheel to take advantage of a crank with two chain rings.
 8. No conversion to a free wheel, but I suppose you could use the hub
as is with the coaster brake.
 9. Bearing are not sealed. Will require regular maintenance. I'm using
Phil Wood tenacious oil on the gears and the two bearings near the gears. I
used Park grease on the left bearings.
 10. This is not an off the shelf part. The hub needs to be welded.
Fortunately I found a professional welder who does the MIG welding for $25.

[RBW] Bike Flights experience so far...pretty good

2015-08-11 Thread true
I have used them twice the past 4 or 5 weeks and have been very pleased and
saved money.

Both times they just had me enter all the info online, print a shipping label
and attach to box,
and then drop off at my nearest FedEx center.

They scanned the label, gave me a receipt with tracking number and
it was on the way.

I will be using them again for future bike shipments.
One of the packages was a wheelset.

This gets me to wondering, does it have to be a bike or bike part to ship via
Bike Flights.

[RBW] Quickbeam or Simpleone alternative

2015-08-11 Thread Liesl
Some years ago between the penultimate and last batch of quickbeams, I made a
faux beam. My problem was that until that last silver batch, there wasn't one
small enough for me. I procured a proto bleriot frame in my size and had rich
build a rear wheel with a White Industries eccentric ENO hub with their 19/17
double cog. It doesn't have granny up front but for my riding (mostly urban and
winter urban) it's simply fantastic.

So if you want a Riv for this ride, that's a possibility. Otherwise put the
word out here on the list. You could get lucky like my partner did!

Best of luck

Back in the day, many top level frames required clamp-on bosses.

You can place them where convenient; your cables will be long enough and
can be trimmed to size.

I believe my '72 Sports Tourer has 14-34 freewheel and 54-40 rings. Each gear

steel twin-stik shifters on the headset, 700x35 tires, centerpull brakes.
Riding it makes me happy.

3. yes, but why do that to yourself unless you're looking to make a

No socialism from me; I just said that a shop like that pictured, where
many of the payments are small enough to be made in coins, probably would
fare less well in the US where income taxes might be higher on small
incomes and social services far less extensive and more expensive to the
user. This has nothing to do with socialism, as I understand it.

I like to go where the mass market is, because it's where there's the
highest efficiency of scale and least expensive parts. For me at the
moment, that means 9 speed. 8 speed is not any less expensive, so I'll
take the higher cog count. 7 speed is rarer these days, and rare doesn't
meet my criteria.

When I can buy 10 speed stuff at the same price as 9 speed, I'll probably
go that route when it becomes time to replace the shifters. Until then
sticking with 9 speed. It works fine.

than taking it to FedEx myself.

I would consider using them for non-bike parts if I had something too big
to go via USPS.

Both times they just had me enter all the info online, print a shipping

They scanned the label, gave me a receipt with tracking number and
 it was on the way.

I will be using them again for future bike shipments.
One of the packages was a wheelset.

This gets me to wondering, does it have to be a bike or bike part to ship
 via Bike Flights.

Another limitation is the 120 OLD spacing, not a problem on the QB but
won't fit on my other fixed gear bike, a 2012 Salsa Casseroll which has 130

a QB/S1 since the Bendix requires an OLD of 120mm.

For me this means I'm using
the cruising gear like normal, up and down rolling hills, easily 90% of
 the
ride, if not more. The low gear is there for steep up hills or sustained
head winds. As an example I got in a 33 mile ride on Sunday afternoon, at
the most 1 to 2 miles were in the low gear. All the rest were about
 working
 the fixed gear.

 8. No

Here's some older photos of my Schwinn Voyageur - though it's currently a

38mm Compass Barlow Pass tires and fenders, could probably squeeze 42mm

pre-Stan's, my rate was better than 1 every 5 miles, and this on pavement
where Kojaks went 100 miles between goathead flats (100 per is *damned
good!*).

The F Fred is just about as thin as the Elk Pass, and tubeless with
sealant, riding in dirt where goatheads abound, punctures are no longer a
problem, as long as I top up every 90 days or so.

I think that the Elk will do just fine with sealant in the tube.

The Elk is 559X32.

2015-08-11 Thread James Warren

Hi all,

Philip Williamson and I have decided to meet in Monte Rio this Thursday morning
at 9. We will ride to the Willow Creek Road entrance off of HWY 1. It's a
beautiful dirt climb. When we are done in Occidental, we will have lunch. If
anyone can join us and wants to, please do!

Contact me or Philip off of the forum if interested.

Been slowly increasing the mileage on the Sam. Doing between 8 and 11
miles currently, with hills. Really noticing a difference since adding the
 riding to the therapy routine.

reflective clothing. Typical rationale from a legislator who thinks more
laws will solve everything: It's very clear to me that drivers are more
likely to see a cyclist if the cyclist is wearing a reflective vest. Of
course, New Jersey already has a law requiring cyclists to have front and
rear lights on their bikes if riding after sunset. So every Garden State
cyclist who wants to ride after dark would have to buy a headlight, a
taillight, and now a reflective vest. Under the proposed law, if you don't
 comply, you're fined.

I *like* reflective stuff – I have triangles on the rear bags of several
of my bikes. But why is it the cyclist's responsibility to pay for more
equipment in the hope that it will catch the attention of a motorist who is
so careless that he doesn't notice a bike with lights on it front and
 rear? Sheesh.

Nope. The Quickbeam will do 38mm tires and fenders nicely. More is a hassle to
set up, and a hassle to maintain. The first gen green ones, at least. I could
do nominal 45mm smokes, but I had to shave the side knobs in the rear.

If I wanted the function, I'd get a Black Mountain. If I wanted the aesthetics,
I'd get a Legolas with Atlantis clearances, and the QB track ends. A custom.

I like the QB track ends. Super easy to manage fat tire removal.

some dust that will show in the pictures and one TT scratch which I have

all NOS or NEW when installed on the bike.

Great opportunity if you are looking for a pretty close to perfect

[RBW] FS: SKS Longboard fenders, beige, see link

2015-08-11 Thread Joel Stern
http://www.fahrradgigant.de/SKS-Longboard-28-45mm-beige::39495.html

These were purchased from Rivendell and never used, still in the box they
shipped them to me in. I do not remember what I paid but it was Rivendell
so not cheap.

I only have one box for these and I do not want to have to hunt for a box
so would like to sell both sets and ship to one location.

I do not think you can find these in this country, see the link above for a
good picture, I can take some if you want, these are in their display
packaging.

Both pair for $35 plus shipping

The box is large so I have no idea what shipping will be and will have to
figure it out by zip.

If interested do let me know

Thanks
Joel

I also have but have not priced yet

3 wheels, all 36 hole

1 pair MA2 rims, custom built but never used, on used Campy Chorus hubs
with a 13-26 6 speed FW, I believe ST, if not that a sachs, can check

Sunn C10 on a SunTour Sprint hub, with a ST 13-26 6 speed This was used
whenI was on rollers only, so very little.

I do not have boxes, have to try to get some and will try, a local sale
wold be great. If you are interested please let me know, I will try to
work out a fair price in the meantime.

These wheels need a bit of cleaning as they have been hanging in my
basement for many years.. They include the tires that are on them.

Not pfishing on this, just have no idea and have to work on pricing, so if
interested let me know and I will figure it out, not asking for bids

Thanks again

[RBW] Re: A day in the life of a working class Amsterdam bicycle repair shop.

2015-08-11 Thread ascpgh
That was very nice. It balances the boorish Rapha store I did go into in
Amsterdam last April.

Frans reminds me of a bike repair icon here. He fills a similar function
and place in the cycling community, albeit much less dependent on bikes as
their legs: https://youtu.be/LLR7P5_mvwc

His shop has eleven work stand stations, each supplied with tools for folks
to do their own work or learn how from him or another person who's next to
them working on their bike. I've been there when he's told a post-doc
student he's not changing another tube for him, he's going to lean how to
do it himself. He sponsors the Christmas bike give away through volunteer
repair work, donated bikes and never-claimed impound bikes.

I suppose that such a business can survive without grief only in a society

That said, I'm not giving up my multi-thousand, self indulgent, Rivendells
