[RBW] Need advice on a potential Quickbeam Modification

2016-03-01 Thread Philip Williamson
A sliding dropout that splits to allow the belt through the stays might work. I
think (cursory googling) that the Paragon one would only work with 142x12
axles, which sounds like a new wheel and a reset rear triangle.

[RBW] V-brakes & front racks

2016-03-01 Thread dougP
Today's BLUG mention of potential conflict with V-brakes blocking the hole
in the fork crown & causing a fit problem with racks reminded me of
kinda-sorta almost having that issue when I changed my Atlantis over to
Vs. I use a small Nitto front rack that mounts to that fork crown hole.
On the original Vs that I used the noodle boot contacted the rack strut.
Not enough to cause problems but it had zero clearance. It worked but when
I came across a brake with slightly longer arms (107 mm vs 102 mm, IIRC), I
installed the longer arm. No change in braking power or other
functionality but now plenty of clearance above the rack strut.

These generic Shimano brakes retail for less than $30 so a cheap & easy fix
if you run into the same conflict. Tektro has similar brakes. As it turns
out there's a lot of brake arm lengths out there to choose from. My wife's
Atlantis has TRP mini-Vs that work with standard pull road levers (the
Tiagras that came on the bike) and the cable is lower than the fork crown
hole.

[RBW] RBW Listers Take Over The West Point Inn, June 24 & 25 - Join us there!!!

2016-03-01 Thread cyclotourist
The Entmoot/Jamboree two years ago was a fantastic, grass-roots event that
everyone enjoyed and talked about for a while. It seemed like everything
really fell into place (except I had to leave early) for a fantastic
weekend. That enjoyable event got us thinking about something similar. We
talked about it, but nothing came of it.

Fast forward to last December when Hugh, Jim, and myself made a trip
to the West
Point Inn , and had a phenomenal time there
celebrating Jacquie Phelan's (and Philip W's!) birthday. An absolute blast. We
can't recreate those moments, but we want to have another opportunity back
at the Inn with any like minded folks to celebrate life, life on a bicycle,
the historical context, in one of the most beautiful storied areas I can
imagine. So with Jacquie's help we are hosting a SoCal/NorCal get together
in June!

We have reserved the entire facility for those two nights, and want to pack
in as many people as we can. We hope many of you living in the Bay Area
that we don't get to visit can make it! Maybe even some people from out of
the area can make it there as well (Looking at you, PDXers)!

The costs are very reasonable. For the two nights, it is $2,400. If we can
get 30 of us, it will be $80 a person. Throw in another $20-50 for Saturday
night dinner and breakfast, and you're looking at a bit less than $150 at
most for a unique two night experience in a very special (magical even!)
place. I/we hope many of you can come.

For those not able to do the whole stay, we are planning on a Saturday
ramble of a ride, followed by the above-mentioned dinner. Thinking the
Pine Mountain Loop, Repack to Fairfax to the Marin Museum of Bicycling back
to the Inn. Plenty of alternative routes if someone doesn't want to do
that. Just kind of a cool way to really take advantage of what the area has
to offer. So for sure, plan on being there for the ride and dinner! We'll
figure out a cost per person for just the dinner, it won't be much. Won't
even worry about it if it's just a few people, but hoping to get a decent
sized group there.

Dinner Friday night is potluck. Sat a.m. breakfast leftovers and communal
pancakes or similar. Sat lunch on your own. Sat dinner provided. Sun
breakfast leftovers/communal. Pretty low key. We're hoping to have some
beer provided, but everyone bring a six pack or bottle of your favorite is
a way to do it as well.

Sleeping arrangements are somewhere in the range of hostel level. Four to
five beds per room. Bring sheets or a bag, clean your own room, do the
dishes, sweep the floors arrangement. Not plush, but it ain't camping.

[RBW] Re: [socalallrounders] Re: Strada Rossa March 19th... you all are invited!

2016-03-01 Thread cyclotourist
Pre-riding is highly encouraged! I picked up three goatheads this weekend,
but was randomly screwing around on some little trails I found. I had
Stan's in tubes, so they sealed right up when I pulled them out. If you
know when you're coming down, and it extends to the evening or Sat
afternoon, you could go over to the BikeBBQ and
have a tube-filling party. Pretty easy to pull the core out and fill with
Stan's if you know what to do. If that doesn't work out and you can't get
the Slime tubes dialed in, bringing extra tubes (maybe three between you?)
is your next best bet.

50km route is going to be great: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12362494 A
great sampler of what we flat-landers have to offer!

That won't happen. Now back to Strada Rossa. My plan is to ride my cheviot
with hetres. So I ideally need to put slime in my tubes, right? And I'm
guessing for someone that doesn't know what they are doing, that i should
have lbs do that for me. I think Chuck can buy tubes for 700 with slime in
it. But the tubes with slime in it for 650b seem to be larger than what i
need for hetres. Not easy to take care of these things in Wrightwood so i
need to handle over the next couple days while we need to be off the hill
quite a bit.

And then I'm really hoping to ride the route one day next week so I know
what I'm in for. And now that chuck knows about muffin top bakery, i think
it will be easy to get him to go with me.

Re: [RBW] New Riv custom mixte - what I'm thinking for colour and build

2016-03-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
Don't get me wrong, I was not saying that *I *think you need more than a
40x12. I was saying that a lot of people will tell you that you do. I
think 40x12 is plenty, unless you have to descend at 40mph and insist on
having gearing that allows you to keep up with that.

[RBW] Re: Bike quiver update focusing on my A. Homer Hilsen

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
This last set are the Compass bars. I tried the GB before but they weren't
as comfortable. Also were narrower. I've also tried the Nitto version,
which was worse in terms of comfort.

I'm using the 44 on the Homer now, the actual Compass version that Jan
exults, and I have to say I completel agree with him. Maybe I just nailed
the setup with the 5 cm stem, which is the first time I use it. Whatever it
is, I nailed the height and the extension on the first try and am blown
away by how comfortable they are. Flats, bends, behind the levers, on the
levers.

Highly recommend them.

[RBW] Re: Latest Atlantis update

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
I thought about it, but I think it would look very crowded. I don't really
need to brake from the flats, as ,y hands typically go on the bends and I
can easily reach the levers with my ring and pinky fingers with a small
shift. The new inverted shape and stem extension make it even easier than
before, as I only extend my reach when pedaling hard when I don't need to
brake. For more maneuvering or situations when I may need to brake, my
hands naturally go a bit rearward of the bends where they reach the levers
effortlessly. Since that position is still ahead of the steering axis, the
handling is not affected negatively like it was a bit more before this
change.

I did think about putting Diacompe Guidonnet levers and ordered a set, but
will hold off from doing that change at this time. It just rides so well as
it is now... Maybe when it's time to retape the bars, or I get fidgety
about it... ;-)

[RBW] Re: Latest Atlantis update

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
Ha ha ha ha! That's right!

When I had the new low trail fork made, it had to be painted. I debated for
months on what color to have it repainted, but finally realized that there
just was no better color for the Atlantis than its own original color.
Wanting me to somehow still personalize it, Rick, RBW's local painter
suggested the panels and I loved the idea. I got my personalized look while
keeping the original color.

Here are some new photos taken today on my evening commute showing the
loaded bike:

[RBW] Re: derailleur hanger

2016-03-01 Thread Keith Muller
That will easily straighten without an issue. Please use a derailleur
alignment gauge and do it correctly. Crescent wrenches are a bad choice for
that job. A steel hanger can bend a good long way and still be straightened.
I wouldn't be one bit nervous about straightening yours.

Yeah, that hangar is way off. This is usually a pretty easy and rewarding

I have seen their stems at Box Dog Bikes and Fresh Air Cycles in SF and I
believe King Kog in Oakland carries some stuff as well. Really neat stuff,
a bit heavy, but a nice alternative for builds that require something
besides the silvery/classic Nitto touch.

[RBW] Re: FS: Garage sale! Wheels, Tires, Fork, Pedals, Derailleurs, Bike Bag, Complete MTB...

2016-03-01 Thread Jeremy Till
Another bump. The Cross-Check fork and grey plastic ATAC's are sold,
everything else is still available. Make me an offer.

-27" (630mm) fixed gear rear wheel, $45. Sun CR-18 rim, Origin-8 branded
Formula sealed bearing, double sided fixed gear hub, Wheelsmith 14g
spokes. Currently spaced at 126mm but can be spaced up or down by adding
or removing spacers on both sides; plenty of axle length to even go up to
130mm. Handbuilt by me, not a whole lot of miles ridden before it was put
in storage, I recently trued it and checked the tension. Bearings spin
smoothly.

-26" (559mm) rim brake front wheel, $50. Mavic XM 317 rim laced to Shimano
LX hub with DT 14g spokes. Handbuilt by QBP's wheel shop, formerly
"Handspun," now "Quality Wheels." Used by my wife on the front wheel of
her commuter for 2.5 years until I built her a dyno wheel this past fall.
Runs true and spins well.

-Front and rear first gen Shimano Deore "Deerhead" derailleurs (FD- and
RD-M700), $40. Perfect functionally, OK cosmetically. Came on an old
Takara touring bike I converted to fixed gear. Cool old derailleurs, I
always thought I'd find a use for them, but honestly all of my derailleur
bikes are indexed these days.

-3 pairs of Time ATAC pedals, $20 each or $50 takes all of them. All of my
old clipless pedals, I now ride flats exclusively. Two pairs of the "Alium"
model including one silver "HP" pair, and one pair of circa 2006 ATAC XE's.
All are functional, and the two older pairs still spin beautifully, with
no play in the springs, although the RH black Alium is missing the dust
cap. Ironically, the newer XE's have a little bit of bearing play and play
in the springs.

-Look Bike Bag $40. Large main pocket for frame/fork and side wheel
pockets with enough room for two wheelsets. I bought this in Luxembourg
during a trip to Europe so I could take my bike on the French TGV trains.
I used it hard for a month and then for a couple of subsequent trips
involving flying with my bike, but since then It's mainly been used for
storing various frames, wheels and tires. It does have some tears and
holes in fabric and cardboard stiffener on the bottom, but with some
judicious patching it would be a great and cool way to transport your bike.
(Sorry folks, I can't ship this one).

-1 pair WTB "Allterrainasaurus" 700x40mm tires, $30. Little or no use,
always stored inside, good shape, wire bead. These have a knobby tread
intended for mixed surfaces, a precursor to the current "gravel" tires
currently in vogue. These used to be my go-to summer tire on my touring
bike; they have good volume and roll well on pavement while providing
confidence off-road. Back then we called it "mixed-terrain" riding.

-1 Kenda "Slant Six" 29x2" wire bead tire, $10. XC tread with somewhat
minimal knobs; this is a 30TPI OEM spec tire so it's on the heavy side.
Used for less than a year on the front of my MTB before I swapped to
something lighter and with more aggressive tread. Plenty of life left.

Those are the parts. The bike pictured is a practically NOS 2008 Jamis
Dakota Sport aluminum hardtail MTB, 17", which we bought for my wife last
summer. She only rode it a couple of times on short MTB rides, and
recently she bought a Clem Smith Jr. from Rivendell that she can ride
off-road with, so this one is going. 9spd Deore/XT drivetrain, Shimano
hydro disc brakes, RS Tora fork. I'd do $400 for an iBOB.

[RBW] I totally missed out on SimWorks. New Japanese style house?

2016-03-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
A couple of bikes on the NAHBS flickr rolls had parts with a sort of
cartoon-art looking logo that said "SimWorks". A "SimWorks by Nitto"
sticker on a Hunter Enduro All-Road bike caught my eye in particular, and
so I asked the Googler about it.

The Googler tells me that SimWorks is a sort of design/branding alliance
between Nitto and Honjo. There are some pretty cool products. I really
like this threadless road stem with a built in reconfigurable front brake
cable stop:

http://sim-works.com/en/nitto/dirty-rhonda-stem

There's also a pretty sweet looking front rack. Too bad it's sold out:

http://sim-works.com/en/nitto/potluck-rack

They have a built-in webstore, so it looks like we could buy stuff from
here. Anyway, it's entertaining and I thought I would share.

[RBW] Re: New Riv custom mixte - what I'm thinking for colour and build

2016-03-01 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Maybe someone can enlighten me? When I floated an Imron color (from Eric's
campy only site) to Mitch Pryor for my new rando bike, he told me it was no
longer available due to the toxicity of the paint. He uses PPG paint, and I
chose my color from their online tool. I was looking for a deep, metallic
maroon-type color. I've only seen photos of the bike but it looks great. Mitch
had it at NAHBS. Back to the point...is Imron still available. From what I see
on the google way back machine, maybe it is, but with a changed formula? The
original seems to have been outlawed in CA in the '80s. Just curious. But the
bike sounds great Ryan, with a really nice build. But I might agree with Bill
that even in a non-hilly area you might find the 40 tooth big ring a bit small,
even for a spinner. Maybe 46/30 or 44/28? Whatever you choose, a custom mixte
sounds really sweet!

[RBW] Reverse brake levers - pros, cons?

2016-03-01 Thread Lungimsam
What's your experience?

Thinking if I ever try an upright bar, would these be better than strapping
on mountain levers, just for the cleaner look.

But I like bar ends. Not sure if bar ends can be used with these levers.

Also wondering if the lever squeeze is easy at the extreme end of the
handle bar, since the lever joins the pod there.

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest Atlantis update

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
Thanks Ryan!

On the Atlantis I'm actually using a Brooks leather mudflap because I had
it and like it in brown. On the Hunqapillar, I actually had the Berthoud in
black; it's even thicker and larger than the Brooks. Fit well with the 60mm
Berthoud fenders I had on it, but I think it's overkill. The Brooks are
actually very nice and a bit lighter. They also fit better on 50mm and
under fenders. Haven't tried them on Honjos, though, I wonder if they're
still too heavy for the lighter aluminum fenders. I saw the Honjo mudguards
at NAHBS, but haven't been able to find them; they're smaller and much
lighter, although only come in black and not real leather.

[RBW] Re: derailleur hanger

2016-03-01 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
Absolutely, positively, definitely straighten it. No hesitation. If, in
fact, it has been bent so badly that it is starting to weaken, that will be
apparent in the straightening process (it will begin to crack or obviously
soften), but my bet is 99 to 1 for success. Don't fall on it again, but if
you do fall on it again, straighten it again.

A big Crescent wrench is a useful down and dirty tool for straightening,
but I'd hope that your shop will have a proper alignment tool, and that
they will also eyeball the slot the axle slides into, to make sure the
faces of the slot are still parallel. If it has opened up a little, then a
block of wood for padding, and a few taps with a hammer are the answer.

Happy trails,

Peter

You'd need some way to displace the right chainstay for mounting/removing the
belt, which would be very custom, and likely very expensive. I think you'd be
better off selling the bike for one with a belt.

That is one of the nicest Atlanti I've seen. I do like the look of those
bars, too and the reverse levers look intriguing, I have to sayhmmm.
Anyway, sounds like it rides as good as it looks!

And the Berthoud fenders are very classy...Mark R in Winnipegif you
search the archives, somebody posted a site with a ridiculously low
price...although for us Canucks..not so much of a bargain. The Berthoud

I have them on my A/R. I have another set for the my Riv road...they were
Christmas gifts. Rene, it looks like you are using the Berthoud mudflaps as

 Hi all,

My Atlantis just got it's latest makeover that to me, makes it finally
perfect! Well, I may still try to put the Compass Randonneur bars with a
5cm stem on to see what it feels like (marvelous on the Homer), but aside
from that, it's now the way I always dreamt it.

I installed the Berthoud 50mm fenders but used Honjo stays because I
lost the Berthoud stays. The honjo stays are definitely more elegant, but
take a bit more room. Gave the fenders maximum clearance so I can fit the
new Soma 42mm SL tires (made by Panaracer) which I'm hoping to compare
 with
 the wonderful 38mm Barlow Pass.

After last week's dreadful shimmy experience with the rear load that
was pushed behind the rear axle by the rack, I decided to go for the front
and rear Nitto Campee racks that have the removable low riders. I'd always
loved their look, so finally went for it. I installed them yesterday
(Sunday) and I was marveled at how well they make the bike look. So
elegant! I installed the front lowriders only (for now) and set it up with
my old Acorn tan Rando bag plus a pair of Brooks Norfolk panniers where my
laptop fits perfectly inside its thick padded sleeve.

Last, for the final ergonomic improvement, I swapped my 11cm stem for a
12cm and reversed the Compass Elysees handlebars. The fit is now much
better, I guess that now I'm naturally extending a bit more as I'm riding
faster, and it seems more comfortable and efficient. I'm feeling very
tempted to give the Compass Randonneur bars a chance on the Atlantis, as I
love them on the Homer, but on the other hand, I love how the Elysees bar
look and personalize it, so we'll see. I retaped the bars with

You could also set up the Albas without the grip and use bar end brake
lever and tape the bars with something padded like cork tape . Tape all the
way up and just over the curve. You can tell how far to go as there is a
point on the curve where it becomes unusable as it goes down and in. This
way you have lots more options including climbing on the curve. Climbing
is often @ 10-11 o'clock high on the curve.

Ha! I'll tell you something about that unit. It has an LED display acting
as a taillight (I guess?) that responds with different blinking patterns
when it "sees" something. I was out riding this past weekend and ended up
on a guys wheel for a while wondering what the hell the blinking patterns
were trying to tell me --- I tested drafting close, farther back, off to
the side ... all sorts of combos until I was sure that whatever his rear
light was doing t was doing it in conjunction with me! Still, I couldn't
figure out why -- was it telling me I was more aero in one position than
another -- that I was getting a better draft? Finally, I gave up and pulled
along side him to ask. He laughed and explained the radar thing (a guy with
4 kids wanting whatever extra safety edge he could find) ... but he didn't
know that the display augmented with visual interference. And I'm still
wondering, what's the point?

Re: [RBW] Geeky stuff I find quite helpful - my bike now has a rear radar!

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
Hi Eric,

You are absolutely correct regarding cycling and wearing headphones. I do
hear the cars coming, but usually when they are close. And I agree that
trail users including runners and walkers who are wearing headphones and
unaware of their surroundings are a problem.

Still, I consider this as a supplementary piece of information that just
provides additional enhancement to your awareness and could compensate for
an impaired or reduced capacity like wearing headphones.

I tried riding with a helmet mounted mirror and found it very annoying as
it would somehow get in the way of my forward vision and still, I wouldn't
see cars or cyclists overtaking me until they were passing me. For some
reason, probably because I'm right eye dominant and the mirror is on the
left side, I had to close my right eye and force my left eye to focus on
the mirror to actually see what was coming. It never became secondary or
automatic that as my eyes moved, I would be able to process what was being
displayed in the mirror.

Still find it pretty interesting and I'll post an update sometime in the
future to see if the benefits are "real" or it's just the geekiness of it.
I wonder if I can get some insight from drivers based on whether the light
dynamically increasing it's brightness/# of diodes truly alerts them to the
cyclist or they've already seen it. There are some interesting taillights
being marketed now that have additional features that are purported to aid
drivers in noticing cyclists at night, so just curious to see if that is
true or just hype.

I forgot to add, I also use the Riv cork grips on my Albas, which gives my

Ergon biokorks on my Brompton.

If I just used tape on my Albas, I the narrower grip would give me sore

Rene:

Glad this is working for you. I’m an early-adopted-tech-geek through and
through, but I must admit this particular product exceeds even my desire to
load my bike down with electronics.

I get that you ride with “headphones”—I do this myself, but I would never use
in-ear phones that block all outside noise *or* listen to music at a volume
that blocks out all exterior sounds. You decide how you want to ride, but I
think it’s dangerous to be out on the road without one of your most important
senses (hearing) working properly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to
take evasive action on the bike trail as the result of other riders (and
runners) who can’t hear anything buy their music.

Regarding electric vehicles—even here in California, they’re a very small part
of the fleet, and in my experience that share drops even farther on low-volume
country roads (except for perhaps Marin County, where the local residents drive
their Teslas out into the country a bit more than in, say, Kern County).

My solution for knowing what’s happening behind me is to use my ears and a
helmet-mounted mirror. Cheap, effective, and neither one needs to be recharged.

[RBW] Geeky stuff I find quite helpful - my bike now has a rear radar!

2016-03-01 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

I am a geek, and love technology applied to my hobbies. Yes, there is a
place for simplicity but so far it's not near me. I love my Apple Watch and
iPhone 6 Plus, but after trying to use them as cycling computers with a
very poor overall experience, I went back to my Garmin Edge 1000. I used
Polar technology a decade and a half ago, but when Garmin entered the
cycling market, it provided a better user experience for me, so I switched.
I'm still upset that Garmin doesn't share data with Apple Health, but it's
not enough to make me switch to the poorer user experience I had with
Cyclemeter even factoring the Apple Watch app.

It's not that I am obsessed with tracking all these numbers, I just like
watching the data when I ride, and being able to go back and compare
progress every now and then, see my tracks on the maps, etc.

A couple of weeks ago I was at Palo Alto Bicycles looking for a helmet
light, and I "discovered" a new Garmin gadget called Varia (
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/cycling/varia-rearview-radar/prod518151.html).
For some reason, I had never seen it, heard of it and was curious to see
what it was. When I discovered it was a rear-looking radar to let you know
when cars were approaching from the back, I was intrigued and did a bit of
research online and then ordered one.

I installed it on Sunday, and have ridden with it yesterday and today. I
think it's very helpful and useful, particularly, when you are riding on
roads with low traffic volume. If there are a lot of cars, then there is no
purpose to it, but its use is very good when you are riding on low traffic
roads as it lights up and tells you when and how a car is approaching from
the back. My commute is mostly on such roads and trails, and now I don't
have to keep turning my head back when approaching sections when I have to
take the lane just to see if there is someone behind me. Particularly
useful with all these electric vehicles in California that don't make a
sound when they approach you.

It connects to the Garmin Edge unit, so I don't need the version with the
separate display unit. With the front load configuration I have it attached
to the seat post with the mount provided, but for the Homer I'll devise a
way to attach it to the saddlebag. It provides an additional dynamic
tailight that lights dynamically as the cars approach you.

Since I'll confess to the sin of riding while listening to music on my
headphones, the benefit is significantly higher for me as I don't always
hear the cars when they are far behind me. The angle of coverage is pretty
wide, so on multi-lane roads or when riding on a trail next to a road, it
will still light up when cars are behind you even if they are one or two
lanes away. It still makes you aware. On my evening commute yesterday, I
used it to enhance my timing to switch lanes in traffic so I could take a
left turn. Worked very well!

The only hassle is that you have to charge it, and I still haven't tried to
see how long will the battery truly last. Although at NAHBS I saw these
chargers you can piggy-back on the SON hub so you can charge your devices
as you ride... Will be doing some research on those as well, although
they'd only be truly practical if I ever go on a tour.

Viva the geek!

René

Re: [RBW] derailleur hanger

Imagine trying to remove the derailleur hanger with a big Crescent wrench.
Hard. I think you might do it with four or five 90 degree bends. Bending it two
degrees straight, or three degrees and back a skoodj won't hurt anything.
If it does break, you'd replace the hanger, which is your option now.

There just isn't room with a fender. But I did have room with the Barlow
Pass and VO 50mm fenders. It's always puzzled me that the campee doesn't
have a fender mount. I've been considering handing the rack to a friend to
braze one on, but then I'd have the issue of replating it or something.
Gets expensive quickly.

Also those Berthoud fenders look SO good. My VO fenders are getting pretty
beat and I've considered adding new ones. What size are they? I see they
come up to 60mm, which makes me wonder if you could squeeze Schwalbe super
moto's under them.

I'm late to the party...do you have a custom fork here?

Thank you all for the compliments!

Third ride this morning on the new setup, the full 15.5 miles to work
commute. I like the setup more and more, and may actually not even try
putting the dropbars yet. The reversed bar does make it ergonomically more
comfortable, and it was already comfortable before. Like Grant says, 3%
ergonomic improvement by reversing the bars!

I don't know if it's the extra 1cm stem or the purely front load, but now,
when I have my hands on the ends of the bar when riding upright, they are
about level or just slightly behind the steerer axis and the control is
significantly improved. Before, especially when turning at speed, it would
feel a bit awkward, but now if feels smooth and controlled.

Mark, I do have a custom low trail fork. You can search the list for my
long posts on the story. :-)

I'll post more photos of the loaded bike on this evening's commute.

I'm not sure if you can bend the hanger back twice, but you sure can get a
new dropout from Riv.
It shouldn't be very expensive.
I had my Hunqa's dropout bent, and Riv sent me a new dropout:

That oughtta be fun! I always felt the Clems were destined for some
all-roads rough stuff like the Hunqapillar myself (and evidenced by my own
Clem build). The stack/reach on them is actually oddly close to the specs
on a lot of adventure bikes and fat bikes, despite how different they look
from the modern crop. I'm still playing with getting the right height on
the albastache on mine, but I feel like I'm getting really close now to
having it just so and equally ready for some 'spirited' road jaunts and
some bumpy off-road ones.

I doubt the derailleur hanger will break. You really don't have anything to
lose. It's no fun if your derailleur isn't shifting properly.
Just ensure the mechanic has the correct tool and knows what he is doing.

Don't know if this is relevant to your situation but it is possible for two
sets of threads to exist in the same hole. This is most likely
accomplished when chasing threads for paint etc. I know this to be true as
I've done it before, unintentionally of course. If this is the case it
should be evident if the shoulder of the derailleur and the edge of the

Re: [RBW] derailleur hanger

2016-03-01 Thread Steve Palincsar
I think steel is not aluminum. I'd worry that aluminum would break, but
far less so with steel. What's more, if your alternate is to take it to
a frame builder and have a new one installed, that's a fine backup plan
if and when the hanger breaks when you bend it a second time. In other
words, if you plan to replace it anyway, what have you got to lose by
trying to straighten it?

A few days ago I noticed I had a broken spoke on my rear wheel.
I took the bike in and as it turned out, the shop replaced 5 rear
spokes. The mechanic seemed to think that the chain must've over
shifted pretty hard into the wheel. I don't remember that happening
but I did wreck slightly a few weeks ago as the snow started falling

So he fixed the wheel and trued it up.
I asked him about the derailleur hanger tab and he agreed that it's bent.
I told him that it's been bent before about 5 years ago and I had
another mechanic professionally bend it back with the correct tool.
At that point he didn't want to attempt to bend it back since it's
been done once before and the steel could break.
The rear derailleur will not shift well into either the largest cog or
the smallest cog because of the bend.
When shifted into the smallest cog, the chain rubs on the hanger due
to the inward bend and when shifting into the largest cog, the chain
skates due to the angle of the pulley. So we trimmed out both of
those cogs and now my 8 speed cassette is effectively a 6 speed. This
is fine for the moment as I'm winter commuting but want to get it all
sorted before spring.

What do you all think about the hanger? Will it break? Shouldn't I
just try it? Or is it better to take to a frame shop and have a new
dropout put in? I really don't want to do that and don't even know if
I could get a new one from Riv.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

[RBW] derailleur hanger

2016-03-01 Thread jandrews_nyc
Hi
Looking for some advice here as what I got at a local bike shop yesterday
seemed suspect.
A few days ago I noticed I had a broken spoke on my rear wheel.
I took the bike in and as it turned out, the shop replaced 5 rear spokes.
The mechanic seemed to think that the chain must've over shifted pretty
hard into the wheel. I don't remember that happening but I did wreck
slightly a few weeks ago as the snow started falling and the bike went down.
So he fixed the wheel and trued it up.
I asked him about the derailleur hanger tab and he agreed that it's bent.
I told him that it's been bent before about 5 years ago and I had another
mechanic professionally bend it back with the correct tool. At that point
he didn't want to attempt to bend it back since it's been done once before
and the steel could break.
The rear derailleur will not shift well into either the largest cog or the
smallest cog because of the bend.
When shifted into the smallest cog, the chain rubs on the hanger due to the
inward bend and when shifting into the largest cog, the chain skates due to
the angle of the pulley. So we trimmed out both of those cogs and now my 8
speed cassette is effectively a 6 speed. This is fine for the moment as
I'm winter commuting but want to get it all sorted before spring.

What do you all think about the hanger? Will it break? Shouldn't I just
try it? Or is it better to take to a frame shop and have a new dropout put
in? I really don't want to do that and don't even know if I could get a
new one from Riv.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

[RBW] Re: Ditched the dirt drops for Alba's. Not sure yet...

2016-03-01 Thread Philip Kim
like others, i've had better luck with handlebars just slightly above the
saddle, and the handle bars angles down less. i used to run the albas
angled down just a tad more than yours, but found that it had me leaning
forward onto my hands more.

when i run the bars angled down less, it kind of operated like a perch for
my hands to hang out.

gonna try to bullmoose boscos, and hope these will be just as good.

[RBW] Re: Latest Atlantis update

2016-03-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
Gorgeous setup Rene. I'll bet it turns some heads. I use the same rack
setup on our tandem and really like it. I'm also a big fan of DT shifters,
though for commuting I did prefer something closer at hand. The bars are
very elegant and comfortable looking, which tempts me to try them on my
Saluki, which is what I use to carry stuff these days. My past experience
with bars other than drops has not been good. My buns don't like it, and I
find that as I raise any bar above the saddle, it gets harder to standup an
rock the bike over the top of steep risers.
