Re: [RBW] silly question re: cyclometers

2016-07-26 Thread René Sterental
Nothing silly about the question, not for this geek anyway... :-)

I've been a fan of Garmin units for many years, used Polar before that. The
basic units of 20 years ago left me wanting for more, whereas the latest
Garmin units, even the most basic are really good, especially with the new
sensors that don't require magnets.

What I look for mainly, are Heart Rate and cadence, I get informed on speed
and distance secondarily as part of tracking my improvements and I also
like looking at temperature to quantify how I feel. And, of course, the
gradient. I just like having that data available and correlating my
feelings and perceptions during my rides to the data.

I tried Cyclemeter on my iPhone for a while, and found the use of the
iPhone on the handlebars cumbersome. Also, if I stopped to take photos,
call or text, very often Cyclemeter would pause and I'd be unaware until
some later point when I'd realize it wasn't tracking the ride. It's still
the best iPhone app, but for me the Garmin experience is the most complete.

I have nothing against those who don't like them or just use a basic tool,
but I like the uploading of the rides to track them, look back at past
rides, plan new routes using RideWithGPS and then upload them to the Garmin.

And, I keep screens that are both cluttered with data or minimalists and
alternate as it suits my mood or a particular ride.

Garmin offers different models to suit different needs and preferences.
There are a number of new competitors that seem to be pretty good as well.

Yeah, but the climbing is far more delicious and silent SS than on my
Hunqapillar that I only take the Hunqapillar when I know I'm pealing off on
the singletrack. An early spring or late autumn ride means less traffic and
the road is beautifully silent (but greater need of better clothing).

Monarch Pass is brutal for it length of climb and the volume of high speed

[RBW] choco bars riding positions

2016-07-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I have one each on different bikes, without much of a preference. The Chocos
have more reach-back, and the down-slope curves are useful for a forward
position. My experience with that one is negligible, though..I tend l to ride
both bars at the rear grip area. Where the Choco-Moose (that's such a weird
name) blows away the Alba is looks: Put in on a bike where you're looking for
max looks points.

[RBW] Re: silly question re: cyclometers

Good ol' map and compass work well for this too, though require a bit more
mindfulness. And if a phone has GPS and an offline map (I use topomaps),
location is found in 30 s. just by turning off airplane mode, no matter how
remote you are. So far I've used this five times, and needed it only two of
those, and that since 2012 doing tours on great divide MTB trail,
continental divide trail, and Colorado Trail, all of which have some
significant head scratchers (usually of the "I know where I am, but where
do I go from here" variety).

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: What'r ye runnin' yer Compass Stampede Pass tire pressures at?

2016-07-26 Thread ascpgh
I'm 190 and running my SP Els at about 60-65 on Synergy rims when I pump
them up, less as the week goes or until they feel too soft. Mostly sidewall
squish if I turn sharply low speed or the odd thing or edge in the wheel's
path that makes me feel a thud.

Truly remarkable addition to my Rambouillet, Paul Racers facilitating them
under fender. I'm going out now for a hot ride to three of the area
cemeteries that have very nice monuments. The roads in those are not the
smooth asphalt of roads and the terrain is certainly up and down. The
Compass tires really are a welcome improvement and benefit to my durability
on the bike.

The Stampede Pass is a 32mm tire. You're going to need a good bit more

. Unfortunately,
Berto's charts only went up to 37 mm tires, so you have to
extrapolate/experiment with wider tires. Calculator here
.
I'll add 5-10 psi if I'm fully loaded. I'll drop 5-10 psi if I'm
riding more gravel/trail/off-road.

I've found that 38 mm tires feel squirrely to me around 30-35 psi.

I ran 85 front / 100 rear on my Cerf blue 700 x 26 tires.
I run 60 front / 75 rear on my 700 x 32 Gravel King tires.
I run 30 front / 35 rear on my 26 x 2.1" Thunder Burts.
I run 7 front / 8 rear on my 26 x 4.6" fat bike tires.

Mostly concentrate on not shocking the rims and handling. I have
some big hills to go down. I've also noticed another squishiness
that can develop at high speed, when centrifugal forces are
stretching tje tire out and they don't have sufficient pressure
for good lateral stiffness, but I only see that if I let the
pressures drift a little below the numbers above.

[RBW] Re: silly question re: cyclometers

2016-07-26 Thread Gum N Nuts
I too am curious about this, I typically just use strava on my phone which
is mostly fine if I'm going to end up at home at the end of the ride. I
realize it has a poor reputation for encouraging roadies to act rudely on
the path to beat certain times but I just use it for keeping track of my
miles traveled for most of the riding I do. It can eat up the battery on
longer rides (I use a dynamo hub / luxos u to mitigate this) and it's
pretty inconvenient on tour outside the most ideal circumstances even with
the dynamo. Do most people use some kind of accessory gps like a garmin
when they want to track such infos?

Re: [RBW] Re: Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-26 Thread Eric Karnes
I purchased one of the demo Roadeos earlier this year.

I'm not a roadie (I was a mountain biker as a kid and have always been more
of a bum around for fun / transportation type of bike guy). But I'm also
fairly thin and wirey for my height, so I liked the Roadeo's lighter tubing
and a bit of forgiveness in the frame. My longer distance frame before the
Roadeo was a custom-built Surly Cross Check, which I probably only took it
on a total of five or six rides. I know people love them, but between the
stout frame, touring wheelset, and short head tube, it was a pretty
uncomfortable bike for me.

The Roadeo, on the other hand, has been wonderful. Its ride is smooth and
lively (which is a tough combo to find). I actually have it outfitted with
VO Porteur bars at the moment. I've just never been able to get into
drops...though I'm trying. One thing I've found is that is is much more
than simply a dedicated road bike. Mine sees its share of dirt and gravel.
And with Jack Browns or 35mm cross tires, it's awesome! I probably don't
ride it as much as I should, as most of my rides are city commutes/errands
which I do on my SimpleOne (through stickers and highly beusaged parts, I'm
creating a wonderful bike that looks like a beater to deter thieves...very
much like that old SNL bit for the urban luxury car).

2016-07-26 Thread Hunter Ellis
I find that they're helpful when touring, and I've used a wireless Cateye
Padrone for the last 400 miles. It has huge numbers and all the good
features like: time (like the actual time it is in the world), total
distance, MPH, odometer, and time elapsed. Time elapsed and odometer are
not really necessary, but the large, easily readable numbers are nice. It
attached to the stem instead of the handlebars, which I like, and you just
press on the entire unit to change display/function.

The only trouble I've had is it will sometimes reset itself, deleting your
current ride time and distance. I think I'm doing something wrong--it
usually does that if I'm stopped at a stoplight/etc for a long time. But if
that happens, its a good lesson in the impermanence of things and also the
fact that, like Deacon says, it doesn't really matter in the end.

But again, its nice when touring, especially in remote areas with no cell
service, when you're trying to find your way on countryoads and you need to
know how far you've gone so that you can be looking out for that unmarked
right turn you're supposed to make...

Totally agree! In my experience, the two best up(down?)grades I ever made
to my bike were:

1. Ditching the cyclocomputer
2. Ditching the clipless pedals

That said, If you're training, want to track a fitness progress, etc., I
totally get it. And I have a lot of friends who use them. If you can live
without a wireless, I have an old CatEye that I'll likely never use again.
It's yours if you cover the shipping.

Having seen a few comments from Grant lately, to the effect of "if you want
a single-speed, don't shift" I'd be surprised.

On the other hand, perhaps the "groovy thing that none of our other bikes

derailleur hanger attached?

Alas, I could speculate for ever, but speculation is all it would ever be.

[RBW] choco bars riding positions

2016-07-26 Thread dstein
I feel like there have been a few threads on this but want to ask again for
any new thoughts on these. How are the choco's after you've had them for a
few months? Do you find you can ride in the bend for aero positions, or is
it fairly limited in use like w/ the Albatross? If you've ridden both the
choco and albatross, which do you prefer?

2016-07-26 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
More specifically, as a data point, on my Stampede-equipped bicycle (and my
other 30-32mm tires) I generally pump to about 60 rear, 55 front to start,
and let it go down from there. I weigh about 170, and don't carry more that
2-8 pounds on these skinny tire bikes, if that. I suppose 30mm (the
measured size of my Stampedes on the current rim) is cushy compared to a
25mm, but I would reserve that adjective for tires 38mm and up. ATMO, of
course.

[RBW] Re: What'r ye runnin' yer Compass Stampede Pass tire pressures at?

2016-07-26 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

I would start with this and then experiment in either direction based on
your actual experience on your bike. Rim size may be somewhat of a factor,
but don't let a skinny rim keep you from running a plump tire--might just
have to add a couple pounds more pressure on the low end. It's not really
an exact science. I assume my gauge is somewhat accurate, but I then let
the tires go until I think, hey, it's getting a little bouncy. Or squirmy.
Or too mushy. Or whatever. I'll pump in some air. Anyway, less is generally
more.

Re: [RBW] silly question re: cyclometers

2016-07-26 Thread Tim Gavin
I use Strava on my iPhone to track my rides. But I don't refer to it en
route. Also, Strava/GPS seems to drain the battery significantly, so it's
not a good solution for very long rides. (Although, I've solved the
battery problem with the USB charge off my Luxos U).

I use a simple cyclometer on most of my bikes, usually a sub-$50 Cateye
computer.

I prefer to have a cyclometer for the following reasons:
1) distance, for navigation. If I'm on an organized ride with
mile/distance markers, my cyclometer can tell me where I am. That's a nice
mental boost, especially in the back half of a very long/hot day.
2) time of day. I usually keep the clock display up. Another aid to
mental orientation, and a reminder of whether I'm on schedule or not
(important when trying to get to a campsite before dark).
3) speed, for entertainment/encouragement. I'm a big fella so I bomb down
hills. It's fun to see my high score. Also, I have a tendency to settle
into a slowish 13-14 mph road speed once I'm tired, and the cyclometer
reminds me to pick up the pace a bit (back to 16-18 mph if I can).

Re: [RBW] Re: What'r ye runnin' yer Compass Stampede Pass tire pressures at?

2016-07-26 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm 220 lbs, and I use 45-50 psi front and 55-60 psi rear in my 38 mm
supple tires (Lierre, Pari Moto, et al).
I start with the "15% tire drop" method, as developed by Frank Berto and
further by Jan Heine .
Unfortunately, Berto's charts only went up to 37 mm tires, so you have to
extrapolate/experiment with wider tires. Calculator here
.
I'll add 5-10 psi if I'm fully loaded. I'll drop 5-10 psi if I'm riding
more gravel/trail/off-road.

They're very nice supple tires; I think they're nicer riding than the

Re: [RBW] What'r ye runnin' yer Compass Stampede Pass tire pressures at?

2016-07-26 Thread Eric Norris
I find that below about 50 PSI the tires get “squirmy” when making turns or on
a winding road. I weigh about 190 and usually run my Stampede Pass tires at
60-65 PSI. Above that, and the ride quality suffers.

Re: [RBW] silly question re: cyclometers

2016-07-26 Thread Eric Norris
I like using a computer, and I’ve used a lot of different kinds. In my opinion,
the best computer ever made was the Avocet 50, which sadly has been out of
production for many years. Big numbers, easy to use, with elevation gain. I
wrote about it here:

http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com/2010/03/in-praise-of-avocet-50.html

I still have one that I’m saving for a future project.

Nowadays, I’ve turned to GPS units. I have used Garmin units since about 2005,
but switched to a Wahoo Elemnt this year. GPS units don’t need wires, or spoke
magnets, or calibration. With a few spare mounts you can swap one unit from
bike to bike in seconds.

Most GPS units also have the ability to set up the display to show only what
you need. The Elemnt uses a smartphone app that is particularly easy to use.

[RBW] Re: Brooks saddle and the pool noodle

2016-07-26 Thread John
Hi Lynne, I just came across this in this thread (see link):

*"Was the saddle ever comfortable? If so, keep reading. If not, I have no
suggestions.*

*Because on my Atlantis, the Brooks B17 Special I have was very comfortable
before, and now it's not. What happened was it lost firmness as it aged,
and I'm riding on the rails now if I ever try to use it, and it's not good.
It's a common problem with Brooks. The solution that Riv uses is to fill
the saddle with foam to re-establish the firmness, and I will try that
soon. Grant's suggestion to me was to just buy one of those foam noodles
that are sold as swimming-pool toys. Cut a foam piece that will fit between
the leather and rails, and try to firm it up. I believe this has been
successful for many people. Adding laces to keep everything together is an
option as well. I wouldn't try the laces without the foam, but I might try
the foam without the laces to see how that holds
up."https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/selle$20anatomica%7Csort:date/rbw-owners-bunch/V6SkLt6xuMc/GGZba0EJnPQJ

hope this is what you were looking for,

FWIW, but from my own experience with Kojaks and the BQ tests on the R
Tuffys, you might want to consider a Compass tire for something a bit
narrower. IME, the Kojaks roll pretty well, and I'm not sure the RTs would
be an improvement.

This in accord with my own personal tastes, of course

[RBW] Re: silly question re: cyclometers

2016-07-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
I use the simplest one possible. None.

Ask yourself: what do I REALLY need to know as I ride? Does it truly matter
to me that I see my speed? My average? Does any of that information help me
enjoy the ride? Or does it have me riding to the numbers? Pushing myself
instead of "just riding"?

The reality is that if you don't use a computer, you can still track basic
info like distance and time (and thus average speed) with a clock and basic
map. If you have a smart phone, or watch, you can track those in a general
way on the ride.

I find technology is WAY overrated and am far happier riding without the
numbers in my face.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-26 Thread Ryan Fleming
I guess I have sort of the same issue with my 2001 custom Road which is
fenderless right now. I won't commute to work on it because where I work,
there's quite the rogue's gallery of people lurking around "shopping" for
bikes and/or parts. But though I'm certainly not a fast clubby rider, I do
enjoy the road bike with the drop bars (Nitto "Dream" bars), especially
with those dreamy TRP levers and now new to me Compass 32mm extra tires
for longer (up to 50 mile) rides. Anyway, from what I've read, the Roadeo
is , like my old custom, purely a road bike with the predictable handling
of all Rivs and maybe that's its best intended use...granted it's not gonna
freak out on a little gravel. I would opt for B, but if you feel you don't
ride it enough , you want to commute, you don't have to bring the kitchen
sink with you and you have a secure parking spot, go for A. You have a
beautiful bike there; if you get rid of it, I think you might feel a little
seller's remorse.

Myself, I'm not ready to get rid of my road bike yet because it is
fast, comfortable and light riding (No, I don't know how much it weighs, but
it rides light :) )

Re: [RBW] Re: Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-26 Thread Brian Campbell
Add a set of lighter, alloy fenders, saddle bag of your choice and sell off
bikes that duplicate. I have my 61cm AHH down to 24.9lbs with fenders,
lights, dyno hub and fenders. I am using 38mm tires. It is light enough to
feel fast and not overly heavy while climbing. The fenders and lights make
it super practical ( I ride to work on it) and I can add a larger saddle
bag or rack if need be. The 24.9 weight does not include a saddle bag but
does include pedals/bottle cages and empty water bottles. No ti & no carbon
were used either.

Weight is not really the primary concern for me but I had the bike
configured differently and it weighed about 6lbs more, felt sluggish to me
and I felt the handling was suffering due to a heavy front handlebar bag.
It is no less useful in its current configuration and is so enjoyable to
ride, I sold off the two other road bikes I had. No need for them when only
one gets picked when its time to ride

[RBW] FS: Shimano Sora shifters set - NEW

2016-07-26 Thread David Hallerman

Hi,

Some say Sora shifters are the best ones Shimano has made, because these
are the ones that emulate the design of Campy shifters, with an "ear"
lever on the insides of each unit.

For sale here is the 3300 model, which means:
* 8-speed rear
* double chainrings
* works with most Shimano derailleurs

Complete set, with cables and housing.
New in box, never mounted, never installed.

*Price = $125, plus shipping*

Some photos linked below, and questions quickly answered.

Dave, /who has selling these shifters because he has too many projects
but not enough time or space/

[RBW] Re: FS: 62cm Rivendell Simpleone $1200 shipped, and more (thinning the herd)

2016-07-26 Thread John L
By my measurement standover is just about 88cm with the current Xplor
700x40 - FWIW I have a 91cm PBH and have never had any issues.

Would be happy to ship internationally for whatever the difference between
international and avg US shipping costs. Haven't checked in a while but I
think Ship Bikes will deliver to most countries and can give a rough
estimate.

[RBW] Re: FS: Paul Cantilever Brake Levers (pair), Polished silver // Nitto Quill Stem 31.8 clamp, 80mm reach // Nitto Technomic stem

2016-07-26 Thread Philip Kim
Neo Retro front, Touring Canti rear, polished silver, tektro alloy hangers,
no straddle cable though *$125 shipped CONUS for the pair.*

Paul Brake levers (pair), polished silver, short pull for road calipers,
cantilever brakes, road disc, etc. Will not work for V-brake types. Almost
new, couple of rides *$85 shipped CONUS*

Hunter Nugz , these
are brake cable adjusters specifically for Paul Brakes. Almost new. Looks
like you can't buy these anymore? *$20 shipped CONUS*

Paul Rack Adapters, brand new *$20 shipped conus*

[RBW] Re: Roadini

2016-07-26 Thread islaysteve
And, as someone recently asked on the facebook page for this group: Is
there any love for the Bleriot? This was the bike that resulted from a
collaboration between RBW and QBP, and was available both from Rivendell
and any QBP dealer from, I believe, 2006 to 2008. Dealers could also offer
it as a complete, I'm not sure if RBW did. It was brazed in Taiwan and
easily takes Pair-Motos and even wider tires. I refer you to cyclofiend's
excellent webpage on the
Bleriot: http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/bleriot/index.html.

I count myself very lucky to have acquired a Bleriot several years ago and
it may very well be the last bike I buy. It fits me perfectly, rides
great, inspires confidence, and is also "lugged to the teeth." I will be
interested to see the Roadini and to compare it with the Bleriot. Cheers,
Steve

[RBW] Re: Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
I don't know about the Rodeo sales but there are a lot of Rambouillets,
which was the preceding road bike. I run the 28 mm compass tires on mine
and agree that it downhills absolutely fabulously. It's a great bike on
any not too too rough a surface. I would add, however that my '84 Trek
620, which has a nearly identical geometry to the Ram but standard guage
531c tubes and now runs 38mm parimoto tires is every bit as good a ride
and better on bad chip & seal or gravel roads.
