These days even established authors such as yourself/Grant are
self-publishing. It seems to me you could do well down that path. Unless
your new book is doomer fiction or a children's book with no bicycle in it
or something crazy like that. But you've thought of this already.

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-03-31 Thread Addison Wilhite
Just thought I'd chime in on the book. I also just picked it up and have
only just finished the vinyl section. I'm also an audiophile migrating
back towards vinyl and really enjoying the tactile experience and the
different way I listen to music.

I am hoping the book digs deeper into some of the reasons why as humans we
tend to find these analog experiences more rewarding. I've also recently
been bitten by the fountain pen bug which in some ways is more dangerous
than a bike obsession. Easy to keep many more pens than find space for a
bike. Plus, for $200 you can get a really nice pen. But I've spent much
more on both a modern Montblanc and a vintage Waterman flex pen.

Anyway...the book so far is definitely one to check out.

Les, they are the original WTB dirtdrops from way back. I think I bought them
new in the late eighties or early nineties. They are heat treated so I am
pretty sure Nitto made them. I like them ok. I have gone through a bunch of
bars, and still haven't found the perfect one yet. My perfect bar? I want the
sweep back of the Noodle, combined with a shallow drop that has a wide flare
such as the WTB, and with the flats and drops near parallel. Oh, and wide! Not
Crust bar wide, but wide. And electronic anti-carpal tunnel devices...as long
as I am wishing.

Hi all,
I'm new to this group and came to it via searching about this Pass & Stow.
It seems to me to be the perfect combination of needs, from panniers to top
platform to not being "too' big (eg Surly 24-pack). Does anyone have some
updated pix, especially with bags and/or wald basket, to share? I noticed
somebody sold theirs a few days ago, and if anyone else is still interested
in selling theirs, please reach out.
Thanks again, and y'all have a great community I'm excited to join.

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-03-31 Thread Ray Varella
I'd like to add another thought to this discussion, it has to do with public
radio vs mainstream corporate media.
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we have a couple great public radio
stations that play a very diverse mix of programming.
The hosts bring their own tastes and flavors to the audience, they give in
depth history on bands and musicians, they sometimes have live acts in the
studio. They keep the audience aware of small clubs, local venues and obscure
genres of music that just doesn't exist in corporate media.
Instead of hearing THE one cut from a record that the corporation wants to be a
hit.

I know a lot of people are fond of some of the streaming services and think
they get a good exposure to varied artists, and on some level they do.
Where I find them lacking is they don't dig to deep.
There's something about an individual who is passionate about a chosen genre
and how they bring exposure and education to the listening audience.

The sterility of a streaming digital service will never rival that sort of
listening experience.

[RBW] Clem Rear Hub Dust Cap

2017-03-31 Thread Richard Rios
yes. as just a so soish bike wrencher my solution is as follows..
pull the little dust cap back and apply a little light lubricant I used T9
suff. make shure dust cap is seated flush against hub, mine kept getting sucked
into hub body. Find a big hill to ride up n down a few times fast n it should
be good. You will see little rubber dust bunnies building up, but I don't think
it matters much as if I recall correctly bearings are cartridge so sealed any
way. I still get an occasional squeek but no biggie.

vinyl however I appreciate the convenience of digital audio and the sound
quality of digital audio is steadily improving. High resolution audio files
with a solid reproduction chain sound pretty darn good and lack the
distraction of hiss, clicks and pops. I find friction shifting and the use
of manual transmission to be more satisfying than index shifting and an
auto transmission. I also appreciate that in the event of a damaging mishap
I am less likely to find the shifting mechanism MIA with a
friction-shifting bike. I enjoy an old stick shift sports car. It fosters
and rewards driver involvement. It is a fun car to drive. Would I want to
use it for daily commuting/errands? Not really. Here the convenience of an
automatic makes sense. (BTW I use a bike for transportation but there are
times when the use of a car makes more sense. This is another instance
where, depending on personal circumstances, there is no need to choose one
or the other exclusively.)

[RBW] Clem Rear Hub Dust Cap

Have any Clem users had a problem with the dust cap of the rear hub
rubbing? I can temporarily stop the rubbing by stretching the rubber back
over the hub, but after riding a few miles it starts up again. Is this
something that needs to be replaced or is there a possible adjustment that
would solve the problem?

[RBW] Re: Grant coached Bike Snob on today's blog post

2017-03-31 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
BSNYC *was* much-needed and still is. Humor is subjective, but heck--he's
pretty funny. He cusses, but in the big picture and certainly now, that's a
small deal--and this from somebody who didn't swear once until he was 19,
and then only because I trout I'd been working on all evening took the fly
and I missed the strike. The last time I was in NY (2 months ago, when my
publisher formally rejected my new book!) I walked around the park in
snowflakes with Eben and -- I already knew him -- but a "walking talk" is a
good way to know somebody, better than email or bike-riding talks, even.
There is a private Eben and a public one. They're both funny, but the
private one talks about family, his children, history and the history of
NYC, and the topic of goofy bikes doesn't come up, and he's generally mild.
I like both Ebens.

Been cleaning out the bike room lately and came across some some stuff that
I thought the group would be interested in.

I can take payment by paypal or if you prefer check I can do that too. The
prices listed include shipping to CONUS. If you have any questions or would
like more pictures or if you just want to point out a glaring mistake I
made, please don't hesitate to ask here or via email. Pictures are in this

*Chainrings for Sugino crank*. - not very used 46 tooth $15, used 28 tooth

you want the crank and all the rings I will be happy to make a deal to save
on shipping a bunch of rings everywhere.

*Shimano Ultegra FC 6503* triple crank with bottom bracket. 175 crank arm
length. 52 x 42 x 30. Nice condition but used. - $75 shipped

insertion marks on it. - $50 shipped

*Racks* - These came off a Novara Safari I had a few years back which I
gave away but kept the racks, which are really good racks. I just don't
have a use for them anymore.
The front rack is a Tubus Tara Lowride rack. Used with some finish marks. -
$55 shipped

The rear rack I think is also a Tubus, but I could be wrong here. I can't
find any brand markings on it, so for now I'm just saying it's the OEM
Novara Safari rear rack. It has listed a max weight of 25kgs. Super sturdy
rack. - $50

*Nitto M12 rack*. Used but in excellent condition with mounting hardware.
$45

*Wheelset* -
White Industries T11 hubs in purple color laced to HED Belgium rims. The
hubs I had on a previous wheelset that I used for three rides until a crash
destroyed the Pacenti rims. Titanium freehub body and super cool purple
color. So, knowing the hubs were great I had them built up with the HEDs,
which are all black and really cool looking. The new build is unused and in
the original box. 32 rear, 28 front spokes, 700c rims, 130 rear wheel
spacing. $500 shipped (Kinda pricey to ship, but it is a great wheelset)

Yes, that Grand Cru post from VO looks nice for the price.

I have a Grand Cru headset

and rear hub

on my Riv. For the seatpost, I got a lightly used Nitto S65 from a
listmember.

Ditto on the Salsa Shaft. Love the way it works. Have 'em on two of my
bikes. Unfortunately, first they discontinued the silver ones; only black
was available. Then they discontinued them entirely. Seems like every
time something comes along that works really well they stop making it. Bad
karma? Dunno, but it sure is disappointing.

1) They don't line up. VO chose not to go with the Nitto spec. It's annoying
2) Many folks have expressed displeasure with the longevity and performance of
those integrated racks/decaleur combos. I have no opinion but it's out there.

[RBW] Rivendell / VO Randonneur Front Rack with Decaleur compatibility? -- also, trade me? (FT)

2017-03-31 Thread Patch T
Hey Bunch,

Currently I have a Nitto 32F Mini Front Rack on my Quickbeam, it's great,
but I would like to carry a Med size Swift Ozette.

Does anyone know if the legs on the VO Randonneur Rack

 line
up well with the mid-fork tabs on the orange Quickbeams? VO website says
3.75" below the bottom of the fork crown, but I'm seeing about 3.5" from
the top of the tabs to the bottom of the fork crown on my QB, and of course
slightly more if I measure from the center of the tabs.

Yes I could get the Pass Hunter and mount to cantis; yes I could just get a
fork-mount decaleur and keep my current rack. But I want to use the tabs bc
they're there, goshdarn, and I'd prefer the whole set up be one piece
rather than two.

Lastly, say this works, and perhaps I'll just start a new thread, but does
anyone want to trade me for my Nitto 32F? Or for a used Mark's Rack I have
as well?

Thanks!

Love,
Patch

2017-03-31 Thread Patrick Moore
One decline (as a prominent Assyriologist said, *De l'age de la pierre
jusqu'a maintenant, quelle degringolade*) that bugs me is what appears to
me to be inferior movements of the characters in the new computer animation
compared to those in the old hand drawn ones. I recently re-watched "Who
Killed Roger Rabbit," and also read how this was one of the last big ones
to feature hand drawn animation. Perhaps with the latest computer
animations, technology has caught up with skill; my daughter just watched
Beauty and Beast and says it does. But all the Pixar and Disney animations
I've seen fall short of Porky Pig and Jessica Rabbit. For one thing, the
animators seem to feel obliged to insert far too many facial and bodily
movements meant to express emotion, as if, finding it easy to make such
motions, they feel obliged to do it as much as they can, so you have faces
continually twitching and bodies continually swaying and bouncing.

There, I feel better.

Nothing besides price. I love the design of the Nitto S84.

But the Thomson comes in more sizes; I bought the Thomson setback for a fat
bike that takes a 30.9 mm seat post, a size Nitto doesn't offer in the S84.

2017-03-31 Thread Tim Gavin
Schwalbe seems to have re-arranged the lineup of these tires for 2017.

Yes, the G-One Speed is from the lineage of the Super Moto and Big One;
it's a big smoothie designed for beach racing. It's available in 700 x 60,
650 x 60, and 700 x 30 (used to be the S-One).

The G-One Allround (used to be just the G-One) has slightly larger knobs.
It's available in 700 x 35, 700 x 38/40, 650 x 38/40 (I have a set of these
and will measure them soon), and a huge 650 x 70!

[RBW] book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-03-31 Thread Garth
Yes, one does not negate the other, they compliment each other. Just like all
of our bike stuff, whatever we call "it" . life compliments life.

I sometimes miss having a land line compared to the other-wierdly sound of all
digital cell calls on a cell network of wifi. I remember when I first saw
digital tv and could compare it at home directly. I was watching Gunsmoke
comparing the analog cable to Dish hd I thought, "what happened to
everyones face, I cannot see their skin detail and tone anymore" . I don't
have a tv anymore☺ needless to say. Some-day some-one will come along and
market their digital tv as "looking real life like analog".

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-03-31 Thread ascpgh
Interesting takes Hugh. Makes me consider what or why I like what I do,
given the analogy of analog vinyl.

Portability, ease of play and the setting of my listening opportunities
caused me to part with my vinyl collection. I couldn't afford any of the
equipment that differentiated the aural quality of vinyl so well. It was
through friends' (of fewer hobbies) equipment I was able to hear and
appreciate that difference.

I've always had 4-cylinder, manual transmission cars. To me they provide
feedback and control of my intentions and reward my participation in any
mode of driving, surface (or lack thereof) better than automatics. Vehicles
with manu-matic functions are a joke in comparison to what it is I
appreciate about driving manual gearbox vehicles. Double-clutching a
downshift to an un-syncronized gear or heel-and-toeing an RPM-matched
downshift just seemed as much a skill as signaling turns.

I ride 8-speed friction completely on my Rambouillet. I like doing it
myself and I am THE reason a shift occurs well or not. I can pick and mix
my components (not the manufacturer), and enjoy the outcome. I went over
the bars of my Ram when what seemed like a solid indexed shift skipped
several teeth when I climbed out of the saddle accelerating. Never happened
on a friction shift. I ride my commuter in 9-speed index mode. 9 cogs
starts getting too fine for friction to be as perfect as with 7 or 8. It
has bar ends so I'm not a pedestrian if it quits working well enough to
hold a gear.

Niggling minutia culminating with shifting malfunctions intrudes on my
cycling. Merits of indexing are outweighed by the amount and frequency of
maintenance and lower tolerances of the sum of compatible parts to function
as they accumulate wear. Riding my bike is what I get from servicing my
bike, I don't particularly feel rewarded by working on it. It's just the
investment that is necessary for the reward it provides. I wrenched for ten
years in another phase of my life and value my saddle time instead.

[RBW] A post asking about posts

2017-03-31 Thread Garth
Ahaha! If we are speaking of the single bolt Campy NR and SR record seatposts
of the 80's . yes sometimes all you can do is laugh about it all.

I replaced the bolts on my 2 with 6mm allen bolt heads made by now de-funked
Diablo Cycles. These are like industrial kind of quality, you just don't see
such a bolt on stock posts. I can get the bolt super tight now but even
that doesn't help the self-adjustment feature of them .. ahahahaaha.

My favorite post is the no longer made Salsa Shaft. One bolt to lock the
rails, the other adjust a cam for the tilt. Both completely independent of each
other. Brilliant ! . so brilliant, apparently, Salsa 86'd it so they could
sell more of the ones people don't want to buy.
