I suspect most of us have only used the old Phil freewheel hubs, so can't
comment on the new stuff. I'm sure they're strong, but hoo boy the
cost-to-weight ratio is ugly for the cassette version.

I don't understand why a Riv owner - a notoriously reliable bunch for knowing
their stuff - doesn't understand the drivetrain on the bike, nor explains the
very noticeable tire mismatch. In the long run I don't actually care - anybody
can sell a bike any way they want - but it popped up here and I commented on it
cuz it reads a little shifty to me. If y'all are happy with it then good on ya.

Re: [RBW] HHH Run?

2018-10-22 Thread G.E.
My PBH is just shy of 77cm (just under 30in) and there is absolutely no
extra room for stand over... I even lean the tandem a bit when stopped to
keep me comfortable (and that's with 42mm tires). It only works because we
both dismount at stops. It's truly too large for someone of my height and
PBH, but it hasn't been a problem with starts or stops to date. The biggest
issue is really when riding distance because it's just such a stretch.
Ideally (for me anyway), the captain position would be smaller, but we've
made it work. :)

Re: [RBW] HHH Run?

I'm height challenged with a 79 PBH, and the small fits using fatty rumpkin
tires. The standover is not bad with a cm or two to spare (my 54 AHH has
less standover), but the bottom bracket is fairly low. I don't have issues
with it, but I could see where it might cause issues.

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

I don't know the Quill, but have been really happy with my set of TB14s.
For me, they've been what you were asking about: light-ish and fast. Plus
they do look snappy.

This wheel set has been on two bikes-- an Appaloosa for commuting and
around town, and a Sam for open road and gravel. Perfect for both
applications. If I ever wear these out, I'd replace them with the same.

Good luck with it--

[RBW] Re: HHH Run?

2018-10-22 Thread G.E.
I am just under 5'4" and ride as captain on a small HHH with my stoker
being 5'1". It is definitely a stretch (and the standover is VERY close -
for me, not the stoker) and I wish that there'd been an "extra small" size.
I was kind of hoping with another possible run there would be an
announcement of a smaller size, but I know that most bike manufacturers say
smaller sizes just don't sell. :( It's a definite bummer for those of us
who need them though.

That said, we have about 1500 miles on our HHH, so we do ride it a fairly
significant amount. Can't seem to get over that 55 mile mark on a single
ride though because the stretch really is a bit much. Still, so much fun to
ride!

I've used a wine cork as a mount by strapping the USB light's strap around
the cork and attaching it to the rack. This isn't my photo, but it's the

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread David Wadstrup
Thanks for all the feedback! There's a lot to think about here. I should
have mentioned that I already have the tires I'll be riding -- Vittoria G+
Corsa Competition, 700c x 28. I really like them.

Looks like no one has anything to say about the Phil hubs, which might be
saying a lot. I think I'll go with the T11s.

I'm still undecided on the Quill vs H Plus Son rims as I got good feedback
on both. Think I'll have to toss a coin on this one.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help with this decision.
 Thank you.

Hijacking the thread only very slightly: does anyone have ideas for
mounting the Gino mount somewhere on or near the bar when you use a
Moustache bar with no place to clamp a light on the bar itself, and no

Some clear silicone adhesive sealant like Permatex RTV works well and is easily
removable with some floss. Apply enough that is oozes from the sides and wipe

My Roadeo uses A23s with WI T11s, and I love them. The quill looks great
(wasn't an option at the time for me), but no O/C rim, which doesn't
detract much.

I would also recommend the GB Cypress or Compass equivalent. I would
recommend at least considering the EL version. I bought GB Cypress EL, but
will probably not use them until the rains have ended next year.

Have fun!

[RBW] Clean way to mount USB light to front rack?

2018-10-22 Thread ctifusion
Hopefully an obvious solution here. Without a generator hub I'm stuck using a
USB light on the new Atlantis and I can't figure an easy way to mount it to the
front rack as the mount is for handlebars. Not a huge deal but I like the lower
light position and not looking at the ugly light when I ride. Looked up those
accessory bars but they all seem to have the same handlebar mount.

What am I missing?

Saw this last week and it's even better looking in person. The reach doesn't

[RBW] Re: Glue for headbadge?

2018-10-22 Thread Kainalu V.
Use some silcone, or shoe goo, whatever you've got around. And if you're
not wanting to make a mess, mask off the edges with blue painters tape
first, blob in the glue, press it so it oozes out the edge a bit, wipe the
ooze clear, then peel the tape for a clean edge (while the glue's still
liquid)
Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Kieran J
I have two wheelsets with the polished TB14s. All 32h. Great rims,
definitely recommend those.

Go with some Ultegra or DA hubs if you can find a suitable pair in
silver/polished that supports 11spd. They are tough to beat. Some polished
White Industries hubs would be my pick if there was extra $$$ to spend.

I used to have a set of the A23s and had nothing but trouble trying to get
the lumps out of mounted tires (using tubes).

[RBW] My Big Green Tractor

2018-10-22 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ha! You over estimate me, Tom. I plow through snow, but I’ve not plowed snow.
Grin. I think of my Hunqabeam as a mountain horse (a la Man from Snowy River)
and my Quickbeam as a thoroughbred, though I ride both in/through the snow. It
will be an interesting test this winter, presuming we get enough snow to test
well, the skinny-ish 38 mm tires of the Quickbeam cutting through the snow vs.
Hunqabeam’s 2.1” tires being a medium width tire that may or may not float over
enough to be of benifit. Of course the Hunqabeam’s panniers make it preferable
on the cold days for hauling extra layers for coffee and pipe layzing about on
the trail in brisk temps. Grin. Either way, snow can easily double or triple
the time it takes to cover the same ground when clear.

With abandon,
Patrick

2018-10-22 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Guess I should chime in now that I own one.
This build minus saddle bag, minus the chainstay bartape wrap, plus a
Secula plus seatstay dyno light is 22.9lbs.: https://flic.kr/p/2abdqa7

In comparison, my Carbon/Aluminum 2009 Defy 3 was 20lbs, iirc without
pedals.

So not sub 20lbs. But looks like it could easily be with lighter components
on it.
But I like the functionality and how everything work great together on
this bike the way it is.

Build:
Nitto M151F bar
Lizar skins blue wrap
Tech Deluxe stem
Tejtro TRP RLL drillium brake levers
Tektro R559 brakes with Swissstop blue pads
Yokozuna shifter and brake cables/housings
SUN XCD DT shifter clamp
Right Silver shifter
NO front derailer.
Microshift rear R10 derailer
SRAM PC8something chain
Shimano HG-something 8-speed 11-32 cassette
Sugino XD2 double crank 34/43 chainrings.
Front wheel - SON widebody/Sapim spokes/Pacenti Brevet rim 32 hole
Rear wheel - VO Touring hub/Sapim spokes/Pacenti rim 32 hole
GB Cypress tires
Qtubes
B IQX dyno head light
Secula Plus for seatstay rear light

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Doug Bloch
IMO, you cannot go wrong with TB14 rims. They are beautiful and bomb-proof. My
LBS is a big fan.

As for your hub choices, again either one is a winner unless you are trying to
shave off some weight as you suggest. Those rims with either hubs would be (for
me) about the most beautiful vintage-inspired new wheelset you could get.

Re: [RBW] Re: One month VO Touring rear hub review.

2018-10-22 Thread Tim Gavin
I second Igor's recommendation; too much grease can gunk up the pawls. A
light oil is better than grease. If you use grease, use a small amount.

I have about 1500 miles on my VO touring hub, with zero problems.

[RBW] HHH Run?

Looks like there may be another run of the HHH tandem, maybe possibly.

Man, if they could do the Gus Boots curved top-tube to increase the
standover for smaller riders (5'4"), I'd seriously consider buying one,
hanging it in my basement and awaiting the growth of my kids.

Re: [RBW] Got a SP hub! Works good.

2018-10-22 Thread Tim Gavin
They do. The B Luxos U has a built-in capacitor that holds the charge.
The capacitor was added to regulate the voltage for the USB-charging
function. But it also allows the light to hold on to a small charge when
you pedal below the charging threshold. The Luxos U LEDs can provide some
light even when you stop (at a low level and for a limited time).

However, the Luxos U has some other drawbacks, notably visual artifacts in
the beam (due to the very-wide-angle reflector), and issues with the
plastic housing (durability and possible water intrusion).

The IQX followed after the Luxos U, but it doesn't have the USB-charging
function (and therefore no capacitor).

[RBW] Re: One month VO Touring rear hub review.

2018-10-22 Thread Igor Shteynbuk
Hey Lum!

Glad to hear you're enjoying the hub! We suggest using a light oil over
grease for the pawls. The reason being is that the grease has a tendency to
make the pawls stick to the freehub body and prevent proper engagement. It
isn't a big deal off the get-go and probably won't be a big deal at all,
but that is our suggestion from miles and miles and years and years of
testing these hubs.

Let's go Ohs!

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

I'm guess I'm a "Golden Ager" by default.

I cut my cycling teeth riding Bridgetones that Grant designed, but my only
Rivendell has been a blue 64cm Rambouillet that I found in semi-rough
cosmetic shape at Bicas, our local co-op, earlier this year. I couldn't
(and still can't) believe my luck. I test rode it with in the parking lot,
and it was love at first pedal stroke. I climbed most of the high mountain
roads in Arizona on it this summer, and it never let me down. Lively,
predictable, comfortable, and just plain fun to ride.

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Will
We have an early '80s Trek 613 in the collection. It's a relaxed frame road
bike. It has regular, not oversized, Renolds 531 tubes and was built in the
USA. In short: a light tubeset, fully lugged. In many respects I think it
is like the Rodeo design-wise. It is the daily rider for one of my sons.

It came to us with a 700c x 28mm wheel/tire setup. It had room for 36mm
tires and we moved to that spec, before wider tires became fashionable. The
36 mm tires simply work better. The bike definitely planes. I dislike that
term, but that is the descriptor word used here. I am skeptical that it is
because of frame flex. I think planing is a consequence of having the
correct rotating mass from your wheel set. I theorize that rotating mass
can be tuned for rider weight and rider position on frame. The bike was
decent with the 28s, but it feels more "energetic" with 36s. More rotating
mass feels like less pedal input is needed to maintain speed. I recently
put 28s back on the bike while we upgraded to a dynamo wheel. The
difference was noticable, and not better. For my son tire width is not a
cush/comfort/gravel issue, It is a handling and ride feel issue. We are
back to the 36s with a front dynamo.

I suggest you consider 36s or similar for the Rodeo. I think the bike will
ride better.

Will

I've had great success with Mavic Open Pro rims over the years and would
recommend them. They can be purchased in a variety of weights and colors,
including silver (they do come with quite a few decals on them, however,
but you can remove those if you don't like the looks). The ones I've used
were well machined and solid and stayed that way with a minor touch up
truing now and then.

I'll bet you could get that same "excited" feeling with your GB Cypres
by inflating them up to 80 psi.

For a more “excited” feeling ride (but no faster) try 32 Paselas tour guard.
They rode nice too. More “excited” feeling. Maybe more vibration? Better tread
protection. The GB Cypres is a calmer, smoother feeling ride due to its
suppleness, I guess, but just as fast.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bar Mixte? Yves Gomez/Betty Foy Geometry?

2018-10-22 Thread David B
Thanks for this Justin. I had a feeling there were different sizes per run.
I have a 60cm from the earlier run I believe, but the headtube is really
tall so it effectively fits like a larger bike, which is good for me. I'll
give the MAPs a try, should be here shortly, and try out some drop bars
should things feel cramped.

[RBW] Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Lum Gim Fong
if your experience turns out like mine, the ride quality of the Roadeo will
blow away all of your other rivbikes. You will probably pick the Roadeo for 95%
of rides, even for commutes, like I do.
Seriously think about a dyno hub on the front wheel. If you decide on dyno
lighting I would go for front wheel:
Pacenti Brevet rim/Sapim Race spokes/SON deluxe wide body hub.
Choice of spoke count based on your weight and wether or not you will hop curbs
with this bike.

I commute on stripped down Roadeo with dyno lights and banana sax bag only.
Same front wheel. Love the lighting. So convenient.

[RBW] My Big Green Tractor

2018-10-22 Thread Reid Echols
I just finished building up my new-to-me 65cm Clem H, which is as much of a
tractor bike as I could imagine!

Lovely ride on one of the first decent fall days here in Austin.

[RBW] Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Max S
I personally would go for either Shimano or Campy hubs, with either the TB14 or
Pacenti Brevet, 14/15 db spokes. Quiet, smooth, reliable, light. Royce hubs are
nice, too. Note that with 11 so, the cog spacing is pretty well identical
between Shimano & Campy.

[RBW] Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread David Wadstrup

Hello,

I’m the proud owner of a beautiful, new-to-me Roadeo frameset that I
recently purchased here from another group member. My plan is to take my
time building it up over the course of winter, with a May 1st goal of
getting it out on the road. As I am also the proud owner of a few other
bikes(some Rivendells) I have a pretty specific, narrowly focused idea in
mind regarding the Roadeo. Essentially, I’d like it to be pared down
accessory-wise, light and fast, with an 11 speed Shimano drivetrain and STI
shifters. Unlike my other bikes, I’d like this one to be a sort of one
trick pony — light, fast and agile. I’ll never mount racks or bags or even
fenders on this bike(I have this covered with my other bikes.) For the most
part, it’ll be a fair weather bike. I may occasionally commute on it, but
I won’t ever have the need for it to carry anything or to protect me or
itself from foul weather.

My I I ask for your help? I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching
component choices, but could use some real world, Riv based advice. For
the sake of ease, I thought it best that I divide this into a few different
threads. Today’s is wheels. I’ll follow it up with brakes and bars and
cranks, etc.

Here's what I've been thinking so far

I’ll be running 700c x 28 clinchers and will not ever have the need or
desire to run anything larger than, say, 700c x 32. I’d like polished
silver rims with polished silver hubs both with an aesthetic appropriate
for this vintage/modern looking frame. I’ve narrowed my rim and hub choices
down to 2, but am open to other suggestions should they meet my criteria.

Rims:

Velocity Quill. I really like Velocity rims, but have no experience with
the Quills. They come in polished silver and seem to be Velocity’s best
choice for a fast, light wheel build. I know a lot of people ride the A23s,
but for some reason I’m just not interested in them.

H Son Plus TB14. I’ve only just learned about these, but people on the
internet seem to be very happy with them. They have the look I’m after and
also seem to be a good choice for a light-ish fast wheelset. I think
I'm leaning toward these just to try out a different maker's rims, but am
really torn and am hoping for a nudge in one direction of the other.

Hubs:

White Industries T11, front and back. I have a rear MI5 on my AHH and
really like it. They’re made here in the US which I like and they aren’t
too noisy. I was pretty much settled on the T11s for this build, but then
learned about

Phil’s road hubs. I also have a Phil rear touring hub which I also really
like. In fact, it’s my favorite hub as it spins silently. But the Phil road
hubs are significantly heavier than the T11s. They are also more costly and
being different than their touring hub may sound differently. I’m not super
concerned with weight, but if all else is equal(including durability,)
weight could be a deciding factor.

What do you all think? Does anyone have experience with these rims/hubs? Is
there something else you'd suggest. I've heard HED makes good rims that
would be Roadeo appropriate, but they seem to only come in black with
pretty pronounced graphics. I like the bling of polished silver, but not
bling-y logos. What would you choose in my place? I should mention I’m a
165lb rider, and I’d likely choose 32 spokes, front and back. Unless, of
course, someone feels like I could get away with 28 up front.

I’d love to hear any advice you’re willing to offer. Thank you for your
help.
