Another vote for Longboards in the dirt. I've never had a problem with a
jammed front fender, but the fear of that happening keeps me away from
metal fenders, although they look lovely to me. I've never noticed creak,
rattle, or otherwise with plastic fenders.

Gotta respect Surly for their out-of-the-box way of doing it, as much as
you gotta respect Riv for the same thing. My LHT was the stepping stone to
a Sam Hillborne, and I know I'm not the only one. My LHT taught me that
riding a steel 'road' bike in the dirt is fun, and the Sam confirmed it.
I also use the VO decaleur that mounts in the headset stack, paired with a
Nitto Mark's rack and an Acorn rando bag, all on a 55cm Sam. The system
works brilliantly, even off pavement. The combination of the decaleur,
tombstone loop on the bag, and four under-bag velcro straps is rock solid.

I've had this issue before. Once it was resolved by going to high pressure
to make sure the bead is properly seated, but you already tried that.
I blame the tube. I've had more than a little bad luck with faulty tubes

No idea if 26.0 is going away, but depending on what you want, 31.8 may
have way better options. I wanted Salsa bars, so had to go with new 31.8
stem. I don't notice a functional difference, other than the salsa setup
feels flexier than the noodle that preceded it.
You could always buy the
Pickles. And mustard.

The idea would be to generally replace my Acorn transverse seat bag for
standard rides, and to offer more capacity for bike camping and overnights.
