[RBW] FS; SP Dyno wheel bundle

2024-01-14 Thread 'joe kelly' via RBW Owners Bunch
Sold almost everything from the quickbeam even kept a few things to put on
my old Bridgestone. What is left is the Sp dyno wheel and the Jack brown
green tires.
So I’m gonna try selling them as a bundle. Wheel is a SP dyno hub laced to
a Velocity Twin Hollow rim. I bought the parts from Rivendell and had the
wheel built here in Columbus at Baer Wheels. I’m pretty sure the spokes are
double butted but I can’t remember so assume they aren’t and be pleasantly
if they are. It was the last thing I added to the quickbeam before cycling
faded out for me so very probably less than 500 miles. The tires are in
good shape, the one from the front has more tread than the other but both
still have the checkerboard intact with lots of life left.
Asking $250 for the bundle. Asking buyer to pay half the shipping as a
separate payment once it is determined.
Thank you
Joe

Update. Bars and stem sold! Fast!
Dyno wheel is a SP SV-8 that I bought from Rivendell when they sold them.
Laced to a velocity twin hollow. Hand built here in Columbus at Baer
wheels. I am almost certain the spokes are double butted, I can’t imagine I
wouldn’t have sprung for that but it has been a decade. Assume they aren’t
and be pleasantly surprised if they are I guess. Wheel was the last
addition to the quickbeam so very low miles before cycling faded out for

Sorry for that clunkiness of this for sale post. The Google group machine
seems especially cranky this morning and would not let me make one post
with everything in it.
Finally, extra special bonus for buyers of multiple items. First you will
save a little on shipping, who doesn’t love that, but also you wil get to
pick from one of the following bonus items; 1.hunquapillar post card,
unsent, 2. Old man Peterson’s ferrous velocipede sticker, 3.entmoot 14
patch.
Thanks

[RBW] Re: FS: 60 cm Quickbeam

2023-12-08 Thread 'joe kelly' via RBW Owners Bunch

The original wheelset is high flange suzue front and rear. The rear has
threads on both sides so mine has a 16t freewheel and a 14t fixed cog. The
long dropouts allow this to work. I remember Paul or white industries made
a 2 cog freewheel and I always thought it would be funny to put one on each
side, like a 15-17 and a 16-18 or whatever but honestly the novelty does
wear off of manually shifting even 2 gears plus those freewheels were mega
expensive.
Anyway the 5sp is a sunshine brand from Japan ( probably) I got off a list
member here and the dyno hub is sp brand I think. Whatever affordable hub
they were selling to years ago just can’t remember. I bought velocity twin
hollow rims with non machined sidewalls (crazy to think I can’t remember
Wednesdays lunch but that detail is firmly lodged in my brain) and had them

[RBW] FS: 60 cm Quickbeam

2023-12-08 Thread 'joe kelly' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hello
I have decided to sell my 60 cm quickbeam. I bought it used and customized
it with lots of stuff from Rivendell. I had a wheelset made that is a 5sp
120 rear hub and a dyno front hub I got from Rivendell with velocity twin
hollow wheels. It has lightsfront and rear, a sackville small, fenders,
campee front rack with wall basket and net. Nitto stem with albatross bars,
nitto post with broooks b17 and randi jo cover. Sugino crank with mkx
pedals. Original wheelset included too. Bar end shifters and cheapy
derailers.
$1750 obo
Thanks
Joe

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-29 Thread Kelly
I love the more classic looking - Rambouillet, AHH (mine is 67cm single top
tube), Quickbeam type looks. Over the years the bigger bikes that fit me
have gone by the wayside and I didn't buy the 69 AHH in time.. I do love
my Bombadil for touring. I sold the Ram, and Quickbeam and am down to my
two bike AHH 67 and 64 Bomba.
I may repaint the AHH some day but these two cover my riding needs here.
My wife has her Atlantis and Betty Foy - just sold her Roedeo - I think
my Bombadil has to much seat post - yet when loaded for touring it is nice
for the large saddlesac over the rear panniers... but straps aren't long
enough for just the rack..

Hard to explain but here are some of our bikes and places over the years..

https://www.kickstandphoto.com/Other/Bicycle/Our-Bikes-Over-Time/

Have a great day...

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-17 Thread Kelly
Thanks for all the comments! Buying new they have stated that if I get it
and don't like it I am able to send it back for the cost of freight. Which
is why I'm going to go ahead with the tandem.

I'm not ready to dump my fleet of Rivendel's but am / have changed my goals
- in retirement I've been driving over the road tour buses, an bike friday
might be a good fit since it doesn't need to be boxed just folded for the
trip - the tandem the same thing.. for flights they say to plan an hour to
box etc.

The ride will be the telling story... I' not about speed anymore nor super
long distance.. if it's comfortable for 50 ish miles then I'm golden for
the tandem.

In the early phases... my wife doesn't ride the roadeo anymore - her go to
bike is the Betty Foy - I am still in love with both my Bombadil and AHH.
So even though I might part with the Bombadil nobody would pay the price
it would take for me to let it go (I don't think)

I am making sure there are no one way trips down a rat hole with no way
out.. :)

[RBW] Question off topic mostly

2018-05-17 Thread Kelly
I’m looking at a bike Friday tandem and a bike Friday world tour for me.
Anyone have any experience with either

I don’t have the post ready yet but am considering selling

61cm roadeo in new condition
64 cm bombadil.

Mind isn’t made up yet just thinking about it.

2017-10-30 Thread Kelly Mulholland
Hi John, are you still looking for a bike? I have started thinking about
selling my 64 cm orange quickbeam.

I've finally come to the conclusion it is just too big for me

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: 1st Bombadil on Treasure Island

2016-10-24 Thread Patrick Kelly
If you get off bart at the west oakland station, you can then ride the "bay
trail" around over to the bridge. That portion of the "bay trail" is
interesting, some might say sketchy. But Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is
kinda interesting to check out as well. Take a look at the bottom portion
of http://baytrail.org/get-on-the-trail/map-by-number/oakland-to-albany/

For a few years I would stay in that area every time I went to the bay
area. I like biking over to jack london square to catch the ferry over to
SF.

Re: [RBW] Locks

2016-10-22 Thread Patrick Kelly
The one, the best, the u-lock that I most highly recommend is the Abus
Granit Futura 64, aka U-Lock 64/120HB150

It’s small, it’s light, it’s extra hardened. It’s rated by the manufacturer
as more secure that some of their other (heavier) u-locks.

Advantages/features of this lock:

   - small & light
   - locks both sides of the U rather than just one end
   - keyhole covered, keeps out crud
   - stronger/harder steel than other, heavier locks

Disadvantages/drawbacks:

   - no good bicycle mounting option
   - sometimes too small
   - not as secure as top-end u-locks
   - more expensive than less-good locks

Re: [RBW] Re: What's in Your Cockpit?

2016-09-29 Thread Patrick Kelly
Finally got around to getting a photo of my cockpit. And a few other new
photos, too.

I swapped in a jones h-bar, and sold my choco-moose. I hope it's happy in
its new home. The choco just wasn't quite wide enough for me when
off-pavement. My current bar is too wide, if anything. I find myself riding
stretched out, holding the front part pretty often. I just taped it up the
other day. The brake levers were part of my quest to make the braking
better, but they don't really make any difference. (The crucial change was
the cable housing.) But they look pretty, so I leave them on.

I often put my wallet, keys, whatever in one of those bags on the bar. The
speaker is for listening to either music (20%) or an audible book (70%). It
took me a little while to figure out the perfect mounting system for the
speaker, but this works really well. I can also charge my photo off it. I
track (most of) my rides with the ridewithgps app, so I guess that's kinda
part of my cockpit. And it provides the audio content for the speaker. :) I
do have a gopro, but I don't actually use it much. (My single worthwhile
video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BICjOTVmnkM, but don't watch
it, cuz it was made with a surly trucker. :))

Re: [RBW] Re: Massively upgraded Appaloosa

2016-05-27 Thread Patrick Kelly
For myself, I believe replacing the brake cable housing was necessary.
The brakes worked before. The bike stopped when needed. I never felt
they were failing. But I wasn't happy with the feel of the brakes.
Let's just say they did not feel satisfactory to me.

My fix can't be classified as scientific, because I swapped out levers
and pads as well, but I believe the biggest improvement in my braking
was when I changed the cable housing.

Let me also point out that I live on top of a 700 ft hill that
descends in 2 miles. Whenever I go anywhere I my bike, I start with a
downhill ride where I easily hit 35 MPH, and I'm among cars going that
fast or faster. Tip top brake performance is very important to me. If
I lived and rode in Davis (eg) it would not be quite as critical. :)

[RBW] appaloosa pedal dust cover

2016-05-17 Thread Patrick Kelly
Previously I discovered that I was missing a small part.

https://flic.kr/p/G5obap

It turns out that this is a "dust cover". I emailed dave@riv about it
and he immediately sent me a replacement part (and a gratuitous sam
hillborne brochure). So, awesome service on riv's part there.

I just put in the new one, and checked the other dust cover (on the
other pedal, obviously). The remaining one was loose! So I used
beeswax on both of them. I suspect that is sufficient. I have
locktite, but that seems a bit much in this case.

I just wanted to let other appaloosa folks (or anybody who has these
pedals, if there is anybody else) that they might wanna check their
dust covers, and put something in there to keep them from wandering
off.

Re: [RBW] Re: my joe appaloosa setup

2016-05-09 Thread Patrick Kelly
I had been trying to think of some way to add some space there for a
while when I remembered those little extender things in my parts bin.
I was pretty surprised that they actually worked, but the work really
well. It really is a lot more solid than it looks in the photo. I was
pretty pleased with myself. :)

Re: [RBW] my joe appaloosa setup

2016-05-09 Thread Patrick Kelly
I really like the mondials. These are the 700c x 47, but to my eye
(haven't measured) they seem narrower than the 700c x 45 bitumens that
came with the bike. I've been riding these mondials for a couple
years, I think. I don't put in that many miles, but they have barely
worn. I get flats with these, but not as many as with other tires
(smart sams, others).
I tend to ride in areas with thorns.

One time I had switched to another pair of tires (not schwalbe) and
was going down my home hill. The light turned red, and I discovered
that I was not going to be able to stop before the light. The tires I
was riding were just not as sticky as my mondials. I had to make an
emergency right at the light to avoid going into the intersection. I
got rid of those tires and went back to the mondials. It was a very
good reminder that not all tires perform the same and that it's best
to go slow on unfamiliar tires.

Re: [RBW] my joe appaloosa setup

2016-05-09 Thread Patrick Kelly
It's probably because I came off jones bar to the chocomoose, but the
chocomoose seemed too narrow to me. This jones bar is the extrawide
version, and I've thought about cutting it down. So far the extra
inches haven't been a bother, but really I don't use the ends of the
bar hardly ever.

The bell is a spur cycle bell, and the grips are spur cycle grip
rings. (google either of those to find) The bell really is on the
verge, if not past, of being too annoying. I don't ring it much, but
it's pretty.

[RBW] choco bars with bar-end shifters?

2016-04-22 Thread Patrick D Kelly
Howdy all,

Has anybody actually tried/tested using bar-end shifters on any of the new
choco bars? I have a Joe App with the choco bullmoose bar and keep
wondering about trying out bar-end shifters. (It seems that the only right
one available from riv right now is Shimano 9 Dura Ace Bar End Shifter
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh2-9.htm)

I've not no real beef with the standard inverted thumb shifters themselves,
but I'm interested in having more available/holdable real estate on the bar.

So, pros/cons?

If I do use bar-end shifters, how far should/could I run the cable under
bar tape on this bar?

I suppose experience with other similar style bars (in the albastache
family) would be relevant...

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos, registration

2016-04-21 Thread Patrick Kelly
Will,

That's a good point I hadn't thought of. It just so happens I used
photos of my bike in front of the wall outside my house, so that
works. But, I'm thinking even better would be to include a photo of
yourself with the bike. Put that on bikeindex, and it's gonna be
pretty hard to refute.

There have been multiple cases of bike shops checking bikeindex and
recovering bikes when somebody sketchy brings in a bike.

The real challenge is to get anybody who is purchasing a used bike to
check bikeindex before they buy. In my dream world, where everybody
does this, bike theft is drastically reduced because it's nearly
impossible to sell a stolen bike.

[RBW] joe appaloosa photos, registration

2016-04-20 Thread Patrick D Kelly
A bit of slightly off-topic advocacy here. I'd like to encourage
everybody who hasn't to register their bikes at bikeindex.org. If you don't
like public registration, that's cool, just make sure you record your
serial numbers and keep them safe somewhere. Having your serial numbers is
the most important thing if your bicycle is ever stolen.

I registered my Joe Appaoloosa, and here's the rec:
https://bikeindex.org/bikes/74159

Here are the photos:

https://flic.kr/p/FwvCWP "century mode"
https://flic.kr/p/GiURFx "a bit much"
https://flic.kr/p/G62LNv "heading out"

I'm participating in the Haleiwa Metric Century ride this coming weekend,
so I took off all the "extra" bits to streamline a bit. This is not a race,
but why carry the weight when I don't need to, eh?

The second photo was just a bit of play (there's nothing in the bags).
If/when I need to carry a TON of stuff, I anticipate putting the backabike
bags on the surly front rack, and putting ortlieb rolltops on the back
rack. It's worth noting that it is possible to mount a surly front rack on
a joe app, but it's kinda funky. The mid-fork eyelets are too high for the
surly rack, so I had to be a bit creative connecting that bit. (I think I
figured out the best solution on the 3rd configuration, which is not shown
in the photo.)

The third photo is when I did actually travel with a load. This worked, but
is not the optimum loading pattern, IMHO. I just did what had to be done
with what I had at the time. I rode like this from Sonoma to China Camp
(about 50 miles) and camped there one night. It rained. In the morning I
rode the 30ish miles to Embarcadero bart in the rain. It wasn't raining
hard, just the whole time. I was pretty wet, but I survived.

than a statement about your value as a person, then you will, over a
period of time cease to react at all.' - Yogi Bhajan

But if you do actually want to react, :), here are some responses I'd
have at hand:

* Where do you put your tent and sleeping bag?
* How do you carry groceries on that?
* What do you do with that bike when you run out of pavement?
* Do you like looking like a skunk? (if your own bike has fenders)
* How long do you think that bike will last?
* How can you ride that thing without any suspension? (non-riv-like,
but apropos)
* What's the widest tire you can fit in there?

Riv bikes address a different set of "problems" than racy bikes. For
any kind of bike, you can easily "insult" other kinds of bikes as
failing to address the concerns your bike does address.

Photography provides an excellent metaphor for trade-offs. It's
impossible to create The Perfect Camera for All Situations, because
physics. You cannot have an all-range zoom camera with wide aperture
at all focal lengths that you can carry in your pocket. It's just not
possible. Everything in life involves trade-offs, and it's impossible
to create a thing that addresses all needs, all the time.

I just recently became a riv owner, but I've been lusting after them
for quite a while. My first bike (when I took up cycling again in
2010) was a hybrid bike. People may think that Hawaii is perfect for
cycling, but the infrastructure really is not up to grade (so to
speak). Consequently, I ride routes which are away from the cars as
much as possible. I very quickly learned that my aluminum, skinny
tired (fatter than "race" but still skinny) bike was NOT good for the
riding I was doing. I jumped in the other direction for my next bike
and got a trek 29er hardtail. This was great for riding
anywhere/everywhere but was really more than I needed, too heavy and
not suited to carrying anything, and I wasn't really doing "mountain
biking". There were a few more bikes in the stream before my current
Appaloosa, but the point is that every bike addresses some needs and
not others, and it's too easy to find fault with any bike based on the
needs addressed by another kind of bike. Riv hits the points I need
for my bike, and the riding I do, but it would be pointless for me to
tell somebody else to get one, until I really knew what kind of riding
they're going to do (which very likely is different than what kind of
riding they think they want to do).

I wonder if "normal" local bike shops would have bulk chain rolls like

[RBW] Re: Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

Though the Luxus U is highly loved here I was very unhappy with the Luxus U
and was unable to maintain a charge on an iPhone 6 Plus while using
mapmyride and the screen off. The small cache on the light was not
enough. A larger cache battery such as I have with the E-Werk is much
better for me at a price of course. 4 other people I know with the
Luxus U experience the same issues, as well as with the E-Werk USB.

Just my experience.

Re: [RBW] Stolen in East Bay: Grey Saddlesack (large) + brooks B17 saddle (honey)

2016-03-28 Thread Patrick Kelly
I'm sorta guessing that the reason they took the bag was because it
was attached to the saddle. It's known that you can resell brooks
saddles for actual money, whereas I doubt your off-the-shelf bike
thief would be able to sell a canvas saddle bag. So, I'm guessing that
it was easier to take the bag, than to leave it. I.e., easier to
detach from the bike once the saddle was free, than to detach from the
saddle. Amiright?

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa -- 100 mile report, whimsical photo and Want To Scavenge post

2016-03-22 Thread Patrick Kelly
This may sound trite, but I'm gonna jump to amplify one word Bill
used: easy. Riding my Appaloosa also struck me also as being "easy".
It's a word that came to me when riding mine, but it sounds too
trivial, almost, to speak of. I suspect that riding in a more upright
position affects my riding attitude. I feel less aggressive, and more
relaxed. But, I did find it was easy to go quick, too. I expect to
find that my Joe will be at least as fast as my old bike (which is
fairly tank-like).

Relative to handling, I found that it was not a big deal. I'm not a
super-cyclist by any means, but when people see the super long
chainstay, they assume it's got to ride differently. My friend and I
compared wheelbases between his bombadil and my joe app. His wheelbase
is actually a fraction of an inch longer. This is because he's taller
and has a much bigger bike. The chainstay is shorter on his, but
overall, they are nearly the same length. Point being that even with a
"radical" long chainstay, the bike is not really radically long. Are
there a lot of 6'2" people complaining about how their bicycle is too
long to navigate? I don't think so.

A curious thing, to me, was that I found myself pulling up on the
handlebars on acceleration. I assume it's the difference in riding
position. I guess that since I'm not leaning so heavily forward,
there's not as much weight on my feet/legs. It's not anything
stressful, it was just something I discovered I was doing.

It's also been mentioned (in some thread about Joes) that the rear hub
is loud. It's not the loudest I've heard, but it is louder than
average. Personally I find this to be a feature, since you can stop
pedaling a bit when coming up behind people and they may hear you
coming. It's less alarming than a bell.

[RBW] abe, joe, tom and I ride around sf

2016-03-06 Thread Patrick D Kelly
My buddy Dave Abercrombie (commonly known as Abe) and I went for a little
ride around SF today. He on his Bombadil (Tom) and I on my Joe Appaloosa.

photos: https://flic.kr/s/aHskvHWLea
gps: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/8063583

(I neglected to turn on my gps until we reached the bay, but we actually
started where the ride ended, so it was a complete loop.)

We rode from central SF, north to the beach, then west to the GG bridge. We
rode over, and I wanted to get a photo of the Robin Williams tunnel.
Unfortunately you cannot go there on a bicycle. But at least I got a lousy
photo. Then back across the bridge and continuing west and then south
until we reached GG park. Then thru the park, back to "home".

This was my first real ride on a joe. It's an easy bike to ride. :) Riding
in SF gives plenty of up and down hill action.

I moved my saddle back a bit at one point, which is surprising to me, since
it's already got a setback seatpost, and the seat tube angle is supposed to
be super mellow. I suspect it has to do with the bars coming back so far.
Gonna have to pay attention to my knees to find out where's the right
position for the saddle.

Sitting so upright is a little disconcerting. I feel like I should be
wearing more tweed. Still unknown if I'm gonna stick with this bar, or
change it up.

cheerios

Re: [RBW] JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-06 Thread Patrick Kelly
I did in fact pick up my new joe yesterday. It was raining all day
yesterday, so didn't get a chance to get any photos. But today is
basically gorgeous in SF, so I got to take some photos.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlatphrog/sets/72157665354969562/

I managed to snag one of the very last longboy racks before they were
sold out. Riv stashed it somewhere for me, and Mark installed it
before pickup. I requested that it be mounted on the lower mount
point, rather than on the mount point on the seat stay. I was confused
by looking at this photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/9ejXZlLxFD/ It
looked to me like the top of the rack is way too high over the tire.
What I didn't realize is that that is a 650b wheel. That is a size 51
joe app, while mine is a size 55, with 700c wheels. When I was at riv
HQ Mark happened to walk through, and he explained to me that the
lower mount point is actually even lower than most bikes because the 2
mount points near the rear axle are rotated back a bit, compared to
other bikes. In order to actually mount the longboy there, he had to
trip a bit of metal off the mounting tab on the rack. (You can see
that here: https://flic.kr/p/DZbVDj) So at this point, the rack fit is
quite tight, and I may actually need to raise it if I put fatter tires
on.

The other tweaks, so far, are that I swapped the saddle, the brake
levers, and put on some grip rings.

I have a brooks b17 that I might swap to, or I might stick with this
one. Was not too excited about the standard saddle.

The standard brake levers can be mounted, as I received the bike, with
the bolts sticking up, and into your hands if you try to grip in that
area, or if you reverse the levers, with the bolts almost blocking the
gear shift levers. I did try it reversed, and it did work, and they
were not stabbing my hands, but I opted to get some brake levers that
give a little bit more wiggle room.

I'm sort of planning to wrap the bars. The grip rings are not
permanent, but they're easy (well, relatively easy) to put on/remove,
and I can try different positions for the levers for a while before I
do anything "permanent" with bar tape.

The bag tied to the rack is for a ride this afternoon. I don't have
any real bike bags with me. I was planning to maybe purchase a
backabike bag when I picked up the bike, but it turns out riv is sold
out of them, in all colors.

I've never had a bike with a kickstand before. Still having to
remember that I don't have to lean it against things when I want to
leave it for a second.

Re: [RBW] JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-03 Thread Patrick D Kelly

Mine is not ready, yet, but I do have evidence that it exists. Dave kindly
sent me a photo of my rack installation. Mark had to do a bit of
modification, apparently, to get the rack mounted on the lower mount point,
but I'm very happy.

I'm flying to the bay area tomorrow (for work), and Dave says it "should be
ready" for pickup on Saturday. I expect I'll find out when I show up at
rivHQ :)

[RBW] on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread Patrick D Kelly
I'm fishing for stories pro/con dealing with leaving bags "permanently"
attached to your bike, and if they've been stolen.

I'm contemplating getting a pair of backabike bags and leaving them
attached (probably with zipties somehow). Anybody ever had any of these (or
similar) bags stolen off their bike? I'm imagining it's not even worthwhile
for a thief since they're not gonna get but a few bucks for such a thing.

As a counter-example to what I just said, one time some gloves were stolen
out of a bag on a bike. In this case, I'm sure it was just cuz the thief
had to do zero work. Unzip and just grab what was in the bag. That bag was
seriously attached, and was not stolen.

In my imagination, riv's saddlesacks are "safer" because to somebody
unfamiliar, it's very confusing. The straps and the 2 layers of flap make
me think that thieves are not going to go poking around in there. Any
thoughts/experience on this?

thanks

p.s. Yes, the biggest variable in all this is where/when you leave your
bike unattended. Let's just pretend that I'm very conservative about
where/when I leave my bike locked up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Joes are in, photos on da BLUG

2016-02-25 Thread Patrick Kelly
I think those blug photos make the dirty banana color (my name for
their "mustard") look much darker than it actually is. If you check my
photos from when I took a test ride
(https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlatphrog/albums/72157663735364022)
you can see a range of light/dark. I think the photos where the bike
is in direct sunlight actually give a better impression of the actual
color.

I haven't seen the "blue" in person, so I'm wondering if it's actually
even brighter than it seems in these blug photos...

Re: [RBW] Re: "Store Credit" on BLUG

2016-02-23 Thread Patrick Kelly
If you combine this with some of the complete bike pre-orders, you're
getting some massive discounts. I hope riv has got their numbers
cranked right...

I've been wondering for a while if riv could do some kind of
"membership" (ala REI) but actually leverage this to create a cash
reserve. The problem is that most large companies "go public" to raise
cash, but obviously that's not an option for riv. Even though, I'm
sure there are plenty of customers who would willingly become
"investors" if there was actually a channel to do so. What they're
doing here is pretty darn close, except there is no time delay between
"buying in" and getting your "return", if you turn right around and
spend your credit immediately.

Re: [RBW] No bike parking lockable signs? What's going on these days???

2016-02-23 Thread Patrick Kelly
In some cases it's easier to lock up to the facilities than to a "bike
rack". Compare these:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlatphrog/18711501104/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlatphrog/24111773134/

But, yes, in general I appreciate it when there is a real, designated
place to lock up. As long as it works.

[RBW] what bolts?

2016-02-11 Thread Patrick D Kelly
I've got a joe appaloosa on order. I'd like to try out securing my seat
post and saddle with bolts from http://www.bicyclebolts.com/. Anybody know
what size/which bolts I should get?

I've used pinhead locking skewers on my bikes up to now. Any
(anti-)recommendations for skewers and the joe?

Assuming I used a good u-lock and sheldon brown locking method, are there
any other bits that I can/should worry about locking? I'm guessing there's
nothing to be done (nothing available) for the quill stem/handle bar.

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest Blug, MUSA clothing, and Crapmanship

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Kelly
While I wasn't totally satisfied with the musa knickers I had briefly,
they did convince me that nylon is good for riding pants. For me, I
like REI's "adventure pants"
I have 2 pairs which I alternate almost continuously.

They're a good weight of nylon, maybe not as thick as musa, and well
designed. Actually, REI changes specs sometimes (from year to year, I
think), so some years the weight is not right. When I found that this
years batch was good, I bought my current 2 pairs. (I've "outgrown" my
other pair.) Pretty easy to roll up the cuffs to create that knicker
effect. Grin.

one more bump before i send these off to ebay. i can make a package deal on
shipping multiple items. i bought all the items from rivendell, planned to
use them, but just havent much and i want other rivendell stuff instead.
upon inspection it looks like i had the prices for the long sleve and the
short sleeve backwards, so that is fixed now as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-25 Thread Patrick Kelly
Hugh,

Well, it is almost "mine" since that's the same size and color that I
ordered. A big reason I wanted to go check it out in person.

When I decided to order one, I knew that the bars would be a question.
But I figured that if it turns out I don't like them, I'll just
replace them. Given the bargain price it seemed like a pretty low risk
thing to me. One thing I definitely do like is that it's possible to
use the forward position on them. I never felt that was really
possible with the bosco bars. The choco bars are more like the
moustache that way, but they use mountain levers which i prefer.

I can't really say much about the "feel" of the bike, and certainly
don't notice anything special with the long chainstays. The thing I
noticed about the "feel" of the bike was how cushy the ride is. But
that's basically all because of the fat, low pressure tires. Maybe
it's partially cuz of the longer wheelbase, but that's impossible to
say without riding side-by-side on a shorter bike with the same tires
at the same pressure.

I did try to do some tight turns and loops to see if I noticed a
smaller turning radius, but wasn't really hampered by the long
wheelbase. Keeping knees out of the way of the bars is more of an
issue than the length. Again, if I had another shorter bike to compare
side by side, perhaps I'd be more sensitive, but it seemed pretty
normal to me.

I'm hoping that the longer chain stays will help with my climbing. On
my current bike (not a riv) when I'm climbing, the front wheel comes
up too much, so I lose my ability to steer from time to time. My
theory/bet is that this will not happen on a joe appaloosa. :)
