[RBW] Re: Rivendell SimpleBeam - New Model - Call for the Seriously InterestedB
I fully agree with Pete. My Quickbeam needs a new top tube. At this point it's not cost-effective to replace it. So, I'd jump at a chance to replace the frame set. But, I want a similar bike - No double top tubes (a solution in search of a problem IMHO) or other extras like kickstand plates. It should be a simple bike. On Sunday, December 22, 2013 12:39:41 PM UTC-8, Peter Pesce wrote: Agreed Jim. Wouldn't it just be easier to see if there were 30 people willing to pre-order an actual SO/QB? I know GP uses clone in a pejorative sense but to keep making a bike is not cloning it. Besides, aren't there business side advantages to continuing to sell, though perhaps on a limited, pre order basis, the bike for which you already amortized the tooling and development costs? I have a last gen silver QB and love it. If it were stolen or wrecked I'd seriously consider paying custom-shop money for a new one. I'm not the least bit interested in a NewBeam that has the chunky tube set of my Sam, double top tubes, or wavy gravy curved rear triangle bits. Leather is animal skin, yes. But the tanning process (Tannins bind to the collagen proteins in the hide and coat them causing them to become less water-soluble, and more resistant to bacterial attack.*) heating, stretching, shaping the skin into the shape of a saddle, then several ounces of waterproof goop applied to the surface and rubbed in, have combined to make your Brooks saddle nearly as inert and impermeable to air as any number of unnamed vinyl saddles. That's not to say that Brooks aren't great saddles for their intended uses. Andrew, sounds like a good set up. I'd make one change, though. Instead of a free/free rear hub, I'd go for either free/fixed or fixed/ fixed. The reason is, you can always put a freewheel on a fixed hub but you can never put a fixed cog on a freewheel hub. You limit your options by going free/free; you leave your options completely open with fixed/fixed. Maybe you don't want to try fixed gear now, but you may some day. [RBW] Re: bent steerer - I think
Time for an update. I took the fork/frame to Mitch Pryor (MAP Bicycles) here in Portland. After looking at the damage it was his assessment (and I agree) that the fork crown is bent, not the steerer or fork blades - go figure. Fork crowns, it turns out, are hollow and they can be damaged in a crash. Also, the top tube has a small ripple behind the head tube lug. There is no sharp bend, just a barely noticible ripple. I will probably get that repaired (replace the top tube) locally, though Mitch (and Keven at Rivendell) both say the bike is rideable with a new fork and no work done to the top tube. So, I need a new fork. A custom fork would cost anywhere from $250- $400 and I'd have to wait in the builder's cue. I contacted Riv and spoke with Keven. He may have a new Quickbeam fork for me! I'm waiting for the results of his search. Apparently, they have a number of out- of-spec SimpleOne forks they may sell. The out of spec parts on the fork are the hourglass rack braze-ons; apparently they're for M5 bolts instead of the specified M4 bolts. I'm OK with that. My only complaint is that the graphics are so... well... simple. [RBW] Re: AMOS update
It's basically a roady frame, not a country bike, not a touring bike, just a really nice and versatile road frame kind of the way the Rambouillet was, and the Roadeo would be if it were a hair heavier and had rack mounts. A ROAD bike with clearance for tires up to 33mm with fenders, or 35mm without. The kind of bike you'd get for road riding, club rides, charitable centuries, and occasional careful smooth fire roading. The kind of bike guys who buy $6,000 carbon frames should've gotten instead, but they don't think so. And this bike needs a second top tube?... that's nuts. It's a road bike, not an off-road bike. It simply doesn't need a second top tube in large sizes. Look at the tens of thousands of large steel road bikes out there; do any have double top tubes? Look at the Rambouillet. And are these bikes prone to collapsing like a deck of cards for the lack of a second top tube?... of course not! Are they so flexy that they're unstable? Ask any of the RBW or iBOB readers who ride larger (60cm +) steel road bikes. The second top tube idea is just silly and will keep many from buying this bike. Hey let's add some extra weight to the bike without any reasonable benefit and see if people will buy it? Yeah, these will just fly off the showroom floor! On Apr 17, 9:53 am, bfd bfd...@gmail.com wrote: On Apr 17, 9:09 am, newenglandbike matthiasbe...@gmail.com wrote: I guess there is no accounting for taste, because I have always dug the second top-tube (I prefer the name 'innertube' to 'undertube', but i digress) ever since the bombadil came out, although I agree it probably works better on a mountain/all-purpose bike. I was also drawn to the plain-gauge tubing. I still like the bombadil's concept, even though now it is changed, but the original parallel second tube is hard to beat in my book. I agree in part. There are many, like yourself, who like the double top tube look. That's great and with only 15 framesets per size, it should easily sell. However, Grant is not marketing to you or those who like it. Instead, he specifically said the frame is aimed at bike guys who buy $6,000 carbon frames. That's ridiculous. People in the market for $6K carbon bikes are not looking at either 650b or double top tubes. The only way either of those things get popular with the $6K carbon crowd is if someone in the Tour de Frances wins on one. Now THAT will get people's attention and sell these kind of bikes. Of course, its not going to happen FWIW, I was in Harris Cyclery the yesterday, and they have a 58cm Hunqapillar built-up in the show room. It has the gray/red paint job. All I can say is, pictures don't do that bike justice. I haven't seen one of those yet and I live in San Francisco! I'm sure there's a few around as I do see alot of Riv bikes. [RBW] bent steerer - I think
Yesterday I had a mishap on my Quickbeam (involving a wicked hailstorm and the back of a parked pickup truck)causing the front fork to be displaced exactly backwards toward the frame. Fortunately, nothing else (including yours truly) seems to be damaged. It looks like the steerer tube is bent (or the fork crown - or both) but not the fork blades. It's a small, but noticiable deviation. In fact, the bike is still quite rideable, though goofy looking. I'm going to have a local builder fix the fork - that's a given. Before this happened, I'd been considering adding a porteur-style rack to the 'beam. And now that the fork is already going to need work done on it, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to have the frame builder add a touch (maybe 10mm?) more rake to the Quickbeam's fork. I suspect that once these dangers come to light and the cost of petroleum products continues its inexorable rise, the use of plastics will dramatically fall. The problem with a Brommie is twofold: first, the handlebars have a certain amount of rise that is essentially fixed and which may be too high for a smaller child, second, they're pretty pricey. I wouldn't dream of letting my 6 year old be responsible for a $1500 bike. Heck, I barely accept that my wife is responsible for her Bleriot! ;-) Other folders are much less expensive and might be the ticket for a kiddo. In the end, though, I've decided against a folder for now. He'll get a 20 wheeled Electra Townie this year. In a couple of years, he'll outgrow that and then I really think a Brompton will be his. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Folding bike = kids bike?
Crazy idea here: My son is 6 and has just grown out of his 16 wheel bike and X-mas is just around the corner. After looking around, I've seen new - non department store - kids bikes in the $225-$350 range for his size. Then I spotted a Dahon Curve D3 folder (3 speeds) for $299 and asked myself, why not get him a bike that will literally grow with him? I'll have to double check that the seat to handlebar reach and the saddle to pedal distance are OK for his size. Even if there are minor issues there, I could, concievably use a handlebar with a bit more reach back and change out cranks to something with shorter arms. I'll also want to be sure that the gear range is acceptable. Even that is an easy fix with a larger rear cog, for example. Other than those measurements, can anyone think of any other reason not to get such a bike for a kid? Thanks, Eric. I'd forgotten about the hand brakes. I'll definitely either take detailed measurements of him and current bike and/or try one out with him. (On my Curve, the seatpost is also a pump, which means you can't cut it if needed to get the seat low enough for your son.) If you can, have him sit on it and try it out before you buy. Also make sure he's OK with the crank length (which will be a little on the long side for 6-year-old legs) and with using handbrakes to stop. --Eric Norris On Dec 2, 2010, at 3:17 PM, Ron MH visio...@gmail.com wrote: Crazy idea here: My son is 6 and has just grown out of his 16 wheel bike and X-mas is just around the corner. Re: clear powdercoat, was Re: [RBW] Re: Nov SoCal Riv Ride
I have a clear powder coated Quickbeam and have no visible rust at all. The corrosion seen on many clear powder coated frames is, I believe, a function of the frame's preparation prior to the clear coating. The previous owner of my bike had the original orange paint removed, then took the frame home and spent hours filing lugs and sanding the frame prior to the powder coating. The frame went to the coaters without any rust at all. Thus the steel on my bike looks, well, like steel. Other clear coated bikes I've seen in person and on the internets look just a tiny bit rusty; there's a faint brownish cast to the steel which is not necessarily a bad thing. My frame has no such cast. Oh, and I live in Portland, Oregon - not exactly the driest place to ride a bike in. Every time I clean the roadeo I get paranoid and go look at the pictures I took when I recieved the frame ot figure out of the rust is spreading. It is not, just my paranioa. The other unfortunate aspect of this is that I have two Ocean Engineering Degrees with a specialty in corrosion. While no coating is imune to failure, application is usually the key. The raw factor is what likely compromises these the most, not the clear. If the bike were detailed with a scotchbrite pad or blasted and then solvent wiped the clear coat would likely outlive us, and you sure would know if any visual rust were new. In the case of most pigment coatings, the same surface rust likely lies iunder the coating as well, you just never see it, and if you go in fo ra recoat, they blast it off anyway. Have you ever seen pictures of a brazed bike coming out of the bath to remove the flux? it is not pretty is you have any kind of rust phobia. In a way it is like having an unpainted frame that you feel compelled to add color, but with no real threat of rust you have way too much time to sort it out. I was thinking about this idea this morning. I like the Roadeo clear powdercoat look because it has a nice warm brown-grey tone and an inherent richness and texture to it, and it shows off the details very nicely - the contrasting color of the brazing is like lug pinstriping, but integral rather than cosmetic; the forged dropouts and their connection to the stays stand out. It has a kind of Lou Kahn-style integrity. The iconic Modern architect Lou Kahn is perhaps best remembered by the cliche that he asked the brick what it wanted to be, and the brick told him, it wanted to be an arch. His architecture stressed the ethical imperative of expressing the inherent truth of the materials from which it was built - if an element looked like a column, it definitely was supporting something structurally. Something fake or meant to imitate something else would be a deep ethical failure. A concrete guardrail would be separated from a concrete column, rather than poured integrally and seamlessly, because it performed a different function. Materials such as brick, stone, concrete, and wood were favored rather than painted surfaces, because with these materials, the material itself could be exposed unpainted and allowed to express itself, and these materials weather well and were allowed to do so. I see an analogy between the Lou Kahn mindset and the Rivendell mindset that favors natural materials like canvas, leather, wood, cork, and unpainted silver metal finishes. These materials are also favored for their integrity and attribute of weathering naturally and gracefully. The clear powdercoat allows the steel bicycle frame to join the family of

Since I live in mostly flat terrain, a SS is not a problem. Last week I used it as my work commuter (with backpack or mess bag - I know, not ideal but with cooler weather it works) and last weekend I did a 50 mile trip with no problems. [RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics
That's a fine looking bike, Lee. I'm running the stock chainring setup (40-32) with a White Ind. DOS 16-19 freewheel in back and a 16t fixed cog on the flip side. I ride the bike 80% of the time fixed 40x16. Jim is right about the noisy Sugino chainrings. My 40t is somewhat squeaky even with a perfectly clean and lightly lubed chain. The chainring also has a bit of runout which causes unevenness in the chain tension as the crank rotates. I wonder if a better class of chainring would be quieter? I'm considering a move to a 42t front. But, I want to stick with the 3/32 chain as I have some $ in the White Industries freewheel and fixed cogs. On May 20, 5:15 pm, Lee leec...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks all, for the great information. That's a lot of food for thought. I do like the idea of the DOS freewheel. I ride the QB more than my other bikes. It just makes me smile. I kept the 32t chainring and changed out the 40t in front for a 36t. I run a White 16/19 freewheel. I usually ride everywhere/all the time in 36/16 (about the same as the stock 40/18). I use the 32/19 only when I'm carrying a load or riding alone out of town into the mountains. The advantage of my set-up is that it's close to the original range (which is pretty good for mixed riding) and yet it requires very little axle movement with the gear switch. This allows me to have a really nice fender line and also lets me remove the rear wheel without touching the fender Also, chainline is better compared to the stock set-up. As of yesterday, I've got the Nitto Big rack in the back and Nitto small in the front (with a basket). I installed the Nitto big rack in the rear to give me a little more carrying capacity. This required sawing off the little tabs on the rack that would have made getting the wheel off more complicated. Dave On May 20, 10:27 am, Lee leec...@gmail.com wrote: Hi everyone. Yeah, but I bet you don't have a rear brake with those horizontal ends (not, that I ever use the brakes, let alone the rear one on my fixed 'beam). ;-) Ron On Apr 3, 6:50 pm, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: The rear doesn't look bad at all. Oh, and you did release the brakes first, right? - Let the rear wheel wheel come out to the ends of the fork ends, then grasp your bike frame at a balance point and lift up, leaving the front wheel on the ground. - Take the rear wheel all the way out. As it clears the fork end, angle it so that the chain catches on the opening of the fork end. Rick, I live in Portland and commute on a Quickbeam. It really is fine. But, as Beth said, it all depends on where you live and your route to work. [RBW] My new Quickbeam
Prior to selling my lovely Ahearne I managed to score a near perfect Quickbeam frame and fork. The previous owner had the paint bead blasted off (the original QB orange), then made the effort to carefully sand away most of the surface colour irregularities in the steel. The result is really sharp. The build took some time, as I had to collect the parts from various sources. You'll probably guess where much of it came from by looking at the build list. John at Rivendell was kind enough to send me the old style decals for the bike. They'll go on in the next few weeks (after I build up the expertise and the courage to apply them). I took the 'beam out on it's maiden voyage on Christmas eve. It performed beautifully. I love the cush of the Jack Brown tires and the quiet of the drive train as I pedal along. But all the responses I'd received included messages of kind words and best wishes for my wife. I just wanted to say a humble thank you to all and to let you know that Clare is finishing her treatment this week and that her cancer is completely gone. I may have one less bike, but I get to keep my wife :-) I'd say that's a pretty good trade. Again, thank you. Actually, the writer of the piece is a friend of mine. He owns a beautiful Tournesol randonneuse and is a big fan of Rivendell stuff. But, in afterthought, I assume the editors chose the Hilsen to represent a high-end option for those that can commute on a $4k bike in high contrast to the Kona. Perhaps the not-so-obvious point is that a variety of tastes and needs can be accommodated at a range of budgets, just as in autos. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thanks. I promise to post shots of it here when complete, though I may have to wait a month or two until I can afford up to build it up. I'm bidding on that 62 cm 'beam. I sure hope I can win it! I've been looking for one in that size for some time.
