[RBW] I could have a lot of enthusiasm for this (Riv Tandem)

2017-02-09 Thread Tom Virgil
Well I certainly don't need another bike. Sam Hillborne and the Boulder
have fulfilled my biking needs beyond my imagination. I have a few others
in my stable.

Several weeks ago, DW and I took the ferry over to Coronado and rented a
Burley tandem. We made it downn the strand bikeway to Border Field and
back without marital discord and agreed we had a fantastic time.

As Edwyn Collins (Girl Like You) would say "Now YOU come along..."

Perhaps this is one of those things like a Corvette convertible. Rent one
once every year or so for a special occasion, enjoy it, and then be done
with it until the next episode. (apologies to any Corvette convertible
owners who really like having one). And, to be fair, DW and I do not
regularly ride together (other than the rental on Coronado) and she is not
so into biking. So, for me, it is a fantasy.

But I sure like the concept of a Riv tandem and can admire at a distance.

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] While the World Is Still Asleep (The Century Trilogy)

2016-10-01 Thread Tom Virgil
While the World Is Still Asleep (The Century Trilogy)

An intriguing read for those with a bent for historical fiction, bicycles,
a Rivendell "Just Ride" mentality, the contagious enthusiasm for bicycles
in the 1890s, women's liberation through bicycles, and even the
introduction of the mixte frame. If you are a reader (and I am) this is a
good one. Cannot put it down. From the Amazon synopsis:

"After the tragic death of her little brother, Josephine travels to the
Black Forest to heal. There she discovers a feeling of freedom astride a
brand-new invention: the bicycle. The very idea of a woman on a bicycle is
beyond taboo—it is indecent and even illegal—but Josephine will not be
deterred. Back home, Josephine rides under cover of night, while the world
is still asleep so as not to provoke a scandal. But Berlin’s streets are
dangerous and the winds of change are blowing."

Best Regards,

Tom

[RBW] Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-24 Thread Tom Virgil
I was out on a mission today, seeking a homeless man in our "outback", such
as it is, here, and ran into this situation.

Alejandro Land

They are geese, right? What kind of geese might they be? They seem to be
staying here for a week or so on their journey.

I have not found Alejandro, yet, but am following signs. There was
evidence of a recent fire on makeshift hearth within range of the debris
area images and tracks of his oh so overladen cart. I will be out tomorrow
on Sam Hillborne seeking further.

There is a deep story to this (I think I have related it to Hugh). In
brief, Alejandro is a homeless man who has slipped through the cracks of
both Mexican (in his native country) and US social services (here). He
lives out in the brush with a cart laden an awesome load of God knows what
that is important to him. Little or no English. Diminished Spanish,
although that is his native language. Had he grown up here, I am sure
there would be a label for him. He has a mission every day to haul the
cart several miles to a Ralph's market and then back again to the boonies.
Alejandro is defiant about not giving up his life choices. People in the
hood try to minister to him and get him into better circumstances, but that
is not for him. l am fortunate to live in what might be called "Pill
Hill", and our DM (Doctor of Medicine) neighbors do the same as I, go out,
find him, and treat him when necessary.

Sorry, no bike images (owe you all, Sam is just so coooL). Got
distracted by where Sam Hillborne takes me and has me doing.

2015-12-26 Thread Tom Virgil
Hum... If the outer aluminum has deformed threads and you can justify
"bashing" as "crashing", you might be able to leverage VP Components "Crash

inquiry.

If desperate, there are ways you could re-tap the threads, but I would be

[RBW] Re: Rivendell sightings

2015-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Hello Bruce and valued member of the Smitham family.

I believe I see you from time to time on Carmel Valley Road between I5 and
the coast. I am usually returning from science park up in Torrey Pines (in
a car) where I now work after something of a career change. That's another
topic. I have seen your father once on Carmel Creek Road (hat under
helmet is pretty unique, but wise if he is dealing with a dermatologist. I
understand that). Out on the 56 bikeway I am riding a powder blue Sam
with cream trim and magenta handlebar tape, or my merlot (thought you might
like that) Boulder All Road. Hugh has road tested the All Road and seemed
to come away with a good opinion.

I recently returned to gmail and saw some old email about an ebike for
Bruce Sr. My sincere apology for not being responsive. If you or your
father would like to try one, let me know, I have one. It's not for sale,
so no guile here, but there are ways of watching the sales at TREK and
getting a substantial discount. I use mine for riding to work and riding
in street clothes without sweating out the bike garb.

I am over in Santa Fe Summit, but way down on the last street before
Gonzales Canyon. Great access to the canyon but a lung buster to come up
Sword and the rest of the world. Come on down or i will come up and let's
ride.

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Your Boulder and Rivendell compare/contrast.

2015-05-27 Thread Tom Virgil
I have favorable circumstances in that I own both bikes.

The Boulder All Road is my Randoneur and rides faster than my former
Specialized Roubaix. It gets taken for long rides at a pace with minimal
overhead. I ordered it from Mike Kone at Boulder Bicycles and put it
together myself with parts from a number of sources. It was happy
wrenching and I am enjoying the ride.

The CEO of my company has started practice rides for an upcoming charity
ride (somewhat mandatory rather than voluntary, I hate that) on Saturdays
and, ahem, Team Building. In one of those speaking outside of one's
area of authority and area of expertise moments, he took one look at the
All Road and informed me I should get a bike like his (high end carbon
fiber and electronics) in order to ride with them. I have kept him on my
rear wheel for three rides now, waiting until he is just winded enough and
then sprinting. I am glad that I am independently wealthy. It may come to
that.

Sam Hilborne is my goto bike for just about anything other than extended
rides. Spandex, street clothes, board shorts, get on Sam and ride. One
block in the hood or ten miles. He has a lot of Nitto for carrying things,
but most of the time gets ridden naked with the exception of an Acorn glove
compartment and tool roll. I have had great support from Rivendell (in
particular, Jared) but have not needed it for some time. If you could have
only one bike, this would be the bike.

Best Regards,

Tom

Super Record (1971). Drilled out Campy Record and Candy Root Beer 531 with
the most beautiful lugs and filets.

My friend rode a 55 year old Paramount. It is a fantastic bike today as
our Rivendell products will be 55 years from now.

Nevertheless, I think Sam Hillborne or Boulder All Road would fit right in
with these folks. They seem to have a lot of the same spirit as the RBW
Owners Bunch.

Hope you like this.

Tom

2015-03-19 Thread Tom Virgil
dougP,

Bob's Big Boy. Almost date night level of dining in my high school years
and mandatory for after football games.

Now if you wanted to cruise, you took your RatRod to the A, AW at Venice
and Sepulveda on Friday nights for a Mama Burger Assuming the RatRod had
sufficient reliability (mine didn't and this would surely have caused a
call to Dad's auto service), one cruised between the A in Culver City and
the one in Encino. Iteratively. They had waitresses on roller skates who
attached metal trays to your window (mine was frozen in the perfect
position for a tray). In my adolescent mind, the waitresses were
unattainable Goddesses who were in an entirely different category from what
interest from I could get from the other gender.

Sam Hilborne and Boulder All Road are a lot more reliable than what I used
for transportation back in the day.

[RBW] Re: Interesting things your bikes find

2015-03-18 Thread Tom Virgil
dougP,

Darn you. It entered my head. I wish I was an Oscar Meyer
Wiener...Everyone would be in love with me.

I am attacking back.

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed.

Just try and get that out of your head. So there!

In the late 1950's, Little Oscar and Engineer Bill (a local, Los
Angeles children's show persona with cartoons and model railroad trains on
his show) teamed up for an event at our local Safeway (Mar Vista,
California). They gave hot dogs in buns to kids and had a line to sit on
Engineer Bill's lap (suspicious about that) and, based on a random timer,
potentially win a HO train set component. Eight year old me rode my maroon
Bianchi 3 speed to the event. Somehow, I managed to win a Varney boxcar
kit when the timer went off at a time when my parents could never have
afforded a railroad set of us kids.

Looking back, the Bianchi 3 speed, which my mother obtained at a May
Company outlet store sale, was a Rivish bike.

On the red light you stop, on the green light you go, because no engineer
would ever run a red light.

In the green light intervals, Engineer Bill exhorted TV audience children
to gulp milk. On the red light, you had to put it down. The powdered milk
and whole milk mixture my depression era mother concocted for the Engineer
Bill Show was not that pleasant.

Little Oscar was a mean looking runt and his only attraction to me was that
he traveled around in the Wienermobile.

Liesl, you do seem to have the most interesting encounters with the out of
the ordinary with that very cool bike. Please continue.

Best regards,

Tom

steel frame and the encumbrances I have put on Sam, it feels like there is
nothing beneath me. Sam is a *roller* (TM) and has brought much joy to
bike riding. Mild to moderate trail and road riding are no problem.

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-04 Thread Tom Virgil
Oh. I see I'm not playing nice.

Model: 2013 Sam Hillborne
Framesize: 52 cm (old sizing)
Weight: 35 lbs includes Sackville small seat bag with Sackville tool roll
inside (tube, patch kit, multitool inside), empty bottles, Acorn handlebar
bag (empty), bottles (empty), and Zefal Pump. I am going to guess 31-32
lbs without all of that.

It is a standard build with change outs of noodle bars for Albas and
additions of a Brooks B67 saddle, Shimano Dura-Ace bar ends for silver
levers, and Thin Gripsters. The 36 hole Velocity Atlas front rim was
changed out for a 32 hole Velocity Synergy with a Shimano LX Dynamo and
there is an Eyc front headlamp (cool little light) and Dyno Rack Light. I
added a Nitto Mark's Front Rack M1 and Nitto M14 in back. Hoommm. Let's
not be hasty. I guess i's not a standard build any more. That seems to
happen with these bikes.

[RBW] Re: HAR!!

2014-08-03 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Mike,

Mounted mine on Sam Hilborne today. I can place a ruler across the top
horizontal bar and post a photo if that would help you.

My olive bags arrive Tuesday. I can shutterbug that as well.

I was somewhat bemused that the right rack came in a bag package boldly
labeled LEFT and the left rack came in a bag package boldly labeled
RIGHT. There is an image printed in the instructions that resolves this.
 What happened Nitto?

I am a little put off by not having room to have the quick release lever on
the axle skewer facing somewhat forward. There is just no room for it to
close toward the back of the bike. My thought is that the levers should
always be positioned to the read to avoid being opened by an encounter with
something.

Nice set of NBW with the rack, including a hefty spacer washer for the
upper attachment.

Take care,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.

2014-06-28 Thread Tom Virgil
Did some searching. Oh dear, it's as bad as I thought...

It’s easy enough to do: put a bathroom scale under one wheel and a wood
block the same thickness as the scale under the other wheel. First, weigh
yourself standing on the scale while lifting the bike off of the ground.
Then sit on the bike perched on the scale and block and hold yourself up by
touching an elbow against the wall. Have somebody else read off the scale
reading. As a double check, turn the bike around so that the wheel on the
scale and the wheel on the block are reversed, and take the measurement
 again.

 http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/06/bikes-and-tech/technical-faq/technical-faq-bike-fitting-and-setup_224895#rDZPCQ0if36dPF4Z.99

Now given that I do something like that, and come up with, say, 45/55,
f/r, what is the magic for f/r tire pressure differential.

Thanks,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Overheard at a bike shop

2014-06-26 Thread Tom Virgil
Heya Mike,

Would you be talking Chuck Hoefer at Pacific Coast Cycles? Chuck built my
no holds barred Salsa Motoman in 1986. I still have it. I still ride it.
With the exception of the wretched U-brakes, it is a state of the art
bicycle today. Timeless.

In those days, the shop was on Elm Street (the REAL NAME OF THAT STREET,
not Carlsbad by the whatever Drive, thank you Chamber of Commerce) in
Carlsbad. In the mid nineties, I migrated to Del Mar, and, over time, we
lost touch.

I have nothing but good memories of working with Chuck on the build, and
equipment thereafter. I have the feeling I owe him a visit before any life
events happen. Riding the Salsa, of course.

Best regards,

Tom

On Topic: I feel sorry for that customer Anne encountered in the bike
shop. He will probably never just jump on his bike in his board shorts or
Musas and ride around his hood. Maybe, just maybe, he will find Just
Ride.

For those keeping track, I managed to get the White Industries cranks

[RBW] Just when I think enough is enough on bikes... Japan

2014-05-09 Thread Tom Virgil
Jan Heine comes along and posts his observations on his Japan travels. God
bless him, we are not going to shoot the messenger here, but the upshot is
the Japanese are serious randonneurs, city bikers, racers and all kinds of
things. They are making and have been making some really fine bicycles
with distinctive innovations and deviations from what we think of as the
norm here. They are certainly no slaves to using a particular
manufacturer's group These are not your father's Nishikis.

I started looking at some of the bicycle builders mentioned in Jan's
articles (Hirose, Toei, Grand Bois, ...) and was stunned.

One of the best examples is here at General
Workshttp://www.generalworks.com/toeisha/photo/photo_t5001_eg.html
.

Seriously.

Custom rear derailleur braise ons.
Custom front dérailleur braise ons.
Hub area rack.
Internal cables.
Tire (actually rim) friction dynamo that looks like it might work.
Braised on rear lamp mounting.
Much more.

I am going to extend my next Japan business trip to doing some bicycle shop
visitations and hopefully make some time to ride with people there and hear
what they think.

Respectfully

Tom

[RBW] Gentleman Sam Hillborne but more of a story to it and a bit of drama

2014-05-04 Thread Tom Virgil
It has been almost a year since Jared at Rivendell and I discussed Sam,
elected a build kit, and pulled the trigger. There have been some really
sweet spots of riding, meeting and engaging with many of you here in the
bunch, and some pleasurable wrenching on Sam.

I liked the Alba bars, and know that many of you benefit from them. I
elected to have them when Sam was built. My gun, my bullet, and my
trigger. So please take no disrespect. But for me, it was time for them
to go.

I have been riding my Boulder All Road rando with noodles far and wide, and
always, even if fatigued from a long effort, felt pretty good. I was NOT
feeling that about hands resting on the cork grips, the metal brake levers,
or the hard, shellacked bar tape ahead of that on my Sam.

The rando didn't replace Sam, it just serves a different purpose. Sam is a
horse of a bike that can do a lot. So, solution: make Sam more like rando
without compromising (gentling, for Wheel of Time fans) him. Noodles with
eggplant tape. And a generator lighting system. That's the ticket.

So here he is in his new
configuration.https://www.flickr.com/photos/20853610@N05/sets/72157644521377844/

[RBW] Some ideas on bike theft and retrieval (Here's how to get your stolen bike back in S.F.)

2014-05-03 Thread Tom Virgil
From
sfgatehttp://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/nevius/article/Here-s-how-to-get-your-stolen-bike-back-in-S-F-5448933.php#page-1.

The article has some reasonable ideas. The comments are chaotic so please
don't be discouraged by them.

It made me think. Do I even know or have I recorded the bicycle frame
serial number of my Sam? Nope. I do not even know if it has one. I went
back to my original invoice at the rivbike My Account to see if one was
recorded there. It was not. Perhaps that would be a good idea if Riv bikes
have such a concept.

Failing the above, I will call Jared on Monday to see if Riv bikes have
serial numbers and where to find them. More immediately, before tomorrow's
ride I will check the underside of the bottom bracket (the obvious place)
and see of one is stamped there.

As is the case with most of you, my Sam arrived partially assembled. I
have stuffed business cards and a reward card down the seat tube before
installing the seat post. I would remove them if I sold Sam (not bloody
likely unless my heirs prey my cold dead hands off of his new eggplant
taped noodle bars.)

We hear from time to time of a stolen bike on this list and there is a very
good response from members as to remedies. That is greatly appreciated.

The latest here in San Diego is theft from garages. I live in a gate
guarded community with security patrols and still the thieves tailgate
gardeners and maids. Charming as they might be, windows on your roll up
garage doors just let the thieves see what can be had. Hanging your bikes
from the ceiling and frosting those windows could help. They are also
using garage door band frequency scanners to see what pops open when they
roll through the neighborhood. There are newer garage door controllers
that are resistant to that.

The worst is having some thief jump in front of you on the bikeway and
announce he is taking your bike from you. This has been happening on the
Santa Ana River Trail and the Highway 56 route. Nothing is worth your
life, so give it over if you must. The same attitude you should have
toward a car jack. My solution to this situation (has happened twice) is
not suitable for polite discussion on this forum. I have not lost any
bikes. On a more positive note, I would advice much situational awareness
and using continuous emotional awareness as to what you are riding into.

The Boulder All Road s running Noodles. I like them.

After a lot of thought, reflection, and assessing what I feel (pains,
discomfort, where I ride it), Sam is transitioning to a Noodle bar bike and
lightening/being graceful. He is also getting an Eyc and rear tail lamp as
I am riding him to work and working long hours.

I ride the All Road purposefully. All Road runs fast with just the stuff I
need. Sam glides in a more meandering fashion. My rides home from work
take me where they will. Saw a baby deer tonight on the 56 and just took
the time to look at him/her for a while.

upper respiratory thang to venture out in the hills with the rest of the
gang (thank you Cora for sitting in the shade with me). Any time you
borrow a saddlebag to tote Dayquill and a box of Kleenex is just not a good
sign. Anyway, the little riding we did on Saturday lets me know that it is
a joy to ride and fits like a broken-in pair of wonderful handmade shoes.
I managed to get in the shortest of descents on a grassy Riv-style hill and
I was in awe of its stability. Like a mountain goat.

The paint has to be seen to be believed. JB added pearl to the paint that
you can't see until it's in brilliant sun. And then it flickers and
dazzles with the most subtle blues and yellows and whites...like you just
found a treasure on the beach.

Some details: The Select Flyer wasn't just a test saddle; it's the
saddle. Paul seatpost, thumbies, and brakes; SON hub, White Industries MI5
rear hub, brown big bens, phil BB, shimano xt derailer. Will add cedar
fenders and a nitto mini front rack.

And how wonderful to say to my fellow low PBH friends like Manny: Take
it for a ride! (Rich Lee, you're next in line!)

Once it's set up here in Minneapolis, there'll be more photos and ride
 reports.

Thank you everyone for your knowledge, skill, artistry, support and
input. And especially Grant, Mark, Mark, Rich, JB, and Keven.

grinning from ear-to-ear, Riv Chica Warrior

wear.

Had they been available, I might have went for the Babyshoe Pass XLs.

logging miles, only spending about 10 min really...

The tires did great on the streets which are still a bit of a mess in my
neighborhood, hardpack snow, salt, black ice, and clear pavement all in
random patches. On the snowy park I was definitely able to loose traction
with some turns but for such small tread they gave me more confidence than
I had anticipated. Enough that I'm actually contemplating commuting
tomorrow. Going to be mighty cold, I'll make the call in the morning.

The DIY studs are intriguing! Might be a fun project though I'm not sure
these tires are a good candidate. I'm definitely jealous of your

[RBW] Re: Out my back door.

2014-02-12 Thread Tom Virgil
Wonderfully composed and an enjoyable read. Got me thinking about my own
fortune in having a riding resource outside my back door (Although Gozales,
McGonnigle, and Black Mountain have nowhere near the extent of Big Tijunga).

That in turn led to reading about Sunland-Tijunga history, the Tongva
people, and a particular one named Juana Maria. Never underestimate the
power of your words.

Best regards,

[RBW] Re: Paint matching

2014-02-05 Thread Tom Virgil
Michael,

I try to get more than one nail polish bottle with hues on either side of
what is to be matched. Mixing them and applying to a test piece off the
bike can help get close. A blow dryer can speed up getting to the final
result. I have found an air brush shoots nail polish pretty well (got the
idea from watching the goings on in a nail salon where they use stencils
and air brushes for different effects).

the Joe Bell web site, made my best guess on the color and went to Bond

Unfortunately there grey turned out to be an off white! RBW does not keep

to me. Has anyone out there found a good way to match paint?

BTW, all new bikes should come with touch up paint and a color #.

I do have several bikes built up in the 'Rivendell' fashion. (ie; vintage

Over the years I have slowed down quite a bit and have learned to enjoy
the 'stop smell the roses' and 'take pics' type of rides.

Two weeks ago I built up a higher end vintage Schwinn mt bike for the 2nd
time utilizing Albatross bars and very fat tires.
I had read such positive comments of the Albatross bars on this list I
decided to give them a try on this build. I will post a pic. I did a
longish (for me) ride on it yesterday of 53 miles it did great.

I was concerned about the number of hand positions compared to my bikes
