I'm about to put my 60cm frame set with rainbow tube up for sale, just
haven't gotten around to taking some pics and posting. Just in case you can
go down a size as it does ride a bit on the big size. I usually ride either
a 60-62cm road frame and this definitely rides line a 62cm or 25 inch.

[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-03 Thread ctifusion
I'm glad you mentioned this. The VPs are bad pedals, mine started making
noise almost immediately. Can't have 500 miles on them and they're shot.
Especially given that I have 1000s of miles on multiple sets of Wellgo B132
pedals.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wellgo-B132-Downhill-DH-Mountain-Bike-Platform-MTB-Pedals-w-Replaceable-Pins/291309868321?epid=1224634799=item43d36bd521:g:iJMAAMXQ9u1RExHO

I've been using those RaceFace Chester pedals lately. They are so sturdy,
great platform, and I dig the composite look and all the colors.

Re: [RBW] Gus or Susie?/Threadless Weight vs Quill Weight?

2019-11-16 Thread ctifusion
Weight may not be a primary consideration for Riv riders but there's no reason
to ride a heavier bike if there is an option for a lighter one, especially as
the OP has clearly described his plan to ride this for sport without bags and
racks. How about we keep the tone friendly?

I'd say go for the lighter one unless you think you'll like the stiffer ride
that I assume comes with the heavier tubing and threadless. For me, threadless
frames are stiffer on the rough stuff.

Re: [RBW] briar tires

2019-11-12 Thread ctifusion
I am currently riding Big Apples on my 60cm MIT Atlantis and I can fully
recommend them. I have used lighter tires like Compass, which I love on
other bikes, but the Big Apples seem like a natural fit to me. They're
hefty, but seem to match the feel of the big Atlantis. I assume they are
about as puncture resistant as you can get, and yet they have a distinct
feel that I really like.

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis and chain length

2019-07-04 Thread ctifusion
I had the same thing happen when I was building mine last summer. Last
thing on the build was the chain and it didn't fit! But I had splurged for
a 1x10 set up so I didn't have any extra links in the parts bin (first
10-speed bike for me). I had to add several links from another chain, which
made it a $100 chain total (which hurt at the end of an expensive build!).
But now I have extra 10 speed links for life. I also now thing my chain is
a bit too long so prob should have just asked the LBS if they had a couple
extra lying around. I think it's pretty easy to add links with a quality
(Park) chain tool, just be slow and careful and be sure to bend the chain
laterally both ways with some strength to loosen up the pins.

Post a pic! I also run drops on mine.

Thanks for all the info in this thread. Can I mostly assume that this info
translates to the MIT Atlantis? I've run the new Compass and now the
classic Big Apple (2.35), I'll eventually try the G-One too. All on
Velocity Atlas rims. After a year of riding the Atlantis for fun rides I'm
getting ready to set it up as my everyday commuter and daily driver. This
involves fenders. I prefer metal so I was thinking that the best bet is the
flat Sim Works fenders.

Maybe I should start another thread, but I think the Hunq and Atlantis

[RBW] Commuter oriented bike shop in LA?

2019-02-19 Thread ctifusion
I'm remotely helping a friend get back into commuting, he lives on the
near-east side of LA. He picked up a nice converted vintage MTB but needs
racks, bags and eventually some Riv-ish stuff.

I'm looking for a shop that understands the vintage Riv-inspired commuter
and who may eventually be able to set him up with a basket and some
Albatross bars.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: New Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen (MUSA Type) Report

2018-12-27 Thread ctifusion
Beautiful bike! One question. Are you getting flex with the Towel rack and
delux stem combo? I had to pull my set up off of an Atlantis recently
because I was feeling nervous about how much flex I was getting from a
technomic. I bought a cro-mo Nitto short stem (UI-71?) from Japan but it
was worse. I'm back to Albatross bars now. I'm happier all around even
though I love the towel rack, after three bar set-ups I'm convinced that
that frame is made for albatross bars.

My plan now is to use the towel rack and a dirt drop on my '93 XO-3 (the
good year with the same-ish geometry as the orange XO-1) as an excuse to
finally build that into a fancy retro gravel bike. It spent the last few
years with a parts bin build, set up to pull kids trailers. The XO (59cm)
is a bit small for me so the dirt drop will work better on it than on my
59cm MIT Atlantis which is a much bigger and longer frame.

Love the bike and especially the look of the wide bars on there so I hope
it's working for you.

[RBW] Clean way to mount USB light to front rack?

2018-10-22 Thread ctifusion
Hopefully an obvious solution here. Without a generator hub I'm stuck using a
USB light on the new Atlantis and I can't figure an easy way to mount it to the
front rack as the mount is for handlebars. Not a huge deal but I like the lower
light position and not looking at the ugly light when I ride. Looked up those
accessory bars but they all seem to have the same handlebar mount.

What am I missing?

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-04 Thread ctifusion
That's a great retro build. I have an old mtb waiting for when my 8 year old
grows a bit more. Couldn't pass up a super high end 1994 diamondback when I saw
it on craigslist for $60 (even has some XTR bits!).

I will recommend looking at the Salsa kids mtbs. Rigid, 1x8, 20 and 24 inch
wheels sizes that both take 3 inch tires. I think Giant also makes a plus-tire
kids bike. The Salsa is a really incredible bike with extremely stable
geometry. He loves how it floats on grass like a fat bike would but is still
very fast on the street.

I'll post a link from my computer in a bit.

I have to admit that I have been struggling with my Atlantis seeming too bright
and cheerful with silver parts and tan sidewall Compass tires. I've never built
a bike with black components (I've owned a couple that came that way) but I've
been thinking that the Atlantis would look great that way, and your bike proves
it! Very cool.

I also love the Surly open bars and if it wasn't for my history of avoiding
black parts I would have used them for this build too. What stem is that? Looks
like an old Salsa.

Now I'm conflicted...

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-18 Thread ctifusion
My turn to chime in. I just couldn't go out in the mid-September humidity
and ride this afternoon so I'll write here instead. I will first say that
yesterday when my 8 year old saw it he said "WOW, cool!!!"

I also think it's very cool, and if I hadn't just got a new Atlantis this
year it would be something to consider for a burly commuter and occasional
off-roader. I'm in Indianapolis and there are very few hills here, but
nevertheless I've built and ridden many similar-style vintage MTBs from the
80s as light trail bikes, touring bikes, commuters, etc. And I've built
three for friends just in the last two years and got them riding bikes
again. So I totally agree that there is a reason to build a sturdy MTB-like
bike for the 90% of us who ride mellow off road (or in areas of the country
without major trails) and might also just like the sturdy cruiser style.
This could be a killer commuter.

I'm not in the market for this bike right now mostly for budget reasons (I
have six working bikes, none of which I want to part with) but also because
I recently built something sorta similar to use when I do make it to
trails. I have a 2016/17? Raleigh Pardner that I got off the ibob list last
year. It's a simple, steel framed, 4-inch fat bike with low-level Shimano.
I solved the low head tube problem with a surly fork (uncut) and some riser
bars. It doesn't have the long chain stays, but it does have a slack
geometry and a long wheelbase relative to its size. Not the same bike at
all, but another simple bike with big tires that can handle everything my
47 year old body can do. The only problem I have with this bike is keeping
the disc brakes working and not constantly dragging the pads! The Boots
would be a much smoother and cooler version I'm sure. I just saying that I
totally understand the concept and I think that, in a very Grant/Riv way,
lots of other riders will dig this concept too if they gave it a shot.

I understand the worry about parts (and I've had to work a bit to build the
rim brake bikes I own lately), but other than rims, I can't imagine
anything is a real worry. And there are plenty of 650b touring bikes out
there that will need sturdy rims in the future, rims that will work well
with this bike. I put 5, 10, and 30 year old parts on my new Atlantis this
summer along with a new 1x10 setup. So much fun to mix and match.

Lastly, I'd also like to point out that Grant's post and pics are crazy in
today's modern marketing and Insta environment. That particular bike is
huge and the set up is just plain ugly, especially the black bits and bars
(obviously needs a Bull Moose or the new wavie?). No other company would
ever allow a new bike to be released this way, especially one this
innovative and experimental. I personally love Riv for this, but if it was
carefully built with all the coolest stuff and posed and shot by a pro (no
offense to the photographers at Riv!) I think there would be less
hand-ringing over it's aesthetics. Just saying.

Ride on!

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-17 Thread ctifusion
This is clearly an excuse to buy a winter bike. I have a Surly LHT that I
love anyway, but I also don't mind riding it all winter. Having ridden
bikes year round in Minnesota for 15 years I'd say that riding in dry, cold
conditions with salt residue is not a big deal (Now in Indy the weather is
easier but the lack of road maintenance ad plowing actually makes it harder
to ride in the winter here). It's the salty and wet conditions that really
do a number on components. I also think that if you hose your bike down a
couple times during the winter and lube everything every couple of rides,
the chances of having any real rust issues on the frame are pretty small.
The biggest problem I have is with rusty bolts and rust on the steel parts
of moving components. It hurts my heart when I think of all the beautiful
vintage components I destroyed back in the 90s...

Look for a late-80s/early-90s rigid MTB and convert it to a commuter. The
classic Deore stuff is pretty indestructible. They are fun to build and fun
to ride.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Big Front Rack and hardware (also short Technomic)

2018-08-15 Thread ctifusion
I was looking for an trade on this but I'll just put this up to see if
anyone is interested. Out of stock on the Riv site. This is as new, maybe a
couple very small scratches but nothing noticeable. Installed and ridden
with bags 4 times. Too much rack for the build I'm looking for. This one
will hold a basket! (I guess I don't know that for sure but give me a
break, it's a super strong and beautiful rack).

Included are the long screws and spacers to fit at the bottom, and P-clams
and screws for the fork blades. I also purchased the extra hardware ($38)
to direct mount it but I couldn't figure out how to get that to work on the
MITlantis, I thought I had it figured and I cut the struts, so you'll get
the short struts and the other hardware.

$185 shipped in the lower 48. I will ship it in the original box with
shipping material from Riv.

I should also mention that I have a short Technomic (5cm/25.4) As new,
installed once. $30 shipped in lower 48.

PM me or respond to this with questions. Paypal F

Best,

I'm not in love with the Big Front Rack on my MITlantis. I only need a
front rack to occasionally take a laptop and a couple books to work in
small panniers and the Bid Rack feels like overkill. I'm not planning to
put a basket on the Atlantis either. I know the Hub/Hoop is pretty new so
not sure if there are any around, but thought I'd check. I'd also consider
a nice, classic low rider rack too (Tubis, Bruce Gordon?).

[RBW] Re: new bike day!!

2018-07-25 Thread ctifusion
I love the black rims and the tires. I have about 200 miles on a set and they
are proving to be a great 700c version of the RTPs. I also was worried about
the RTPs and flats but i have at least 2000 miles on a set with only one flat.
The 700c x 55s seem to me to have even more rubber.

Enjoy the great build!

[RBW] Bicycling article about Bridgestone MB-1

2018-07-23 Thread ctifusion
On family vacation far away from my bikes. Picked up the new Bicycling and
noticed a reflection piece about a writer's 1991 MB-1. Nice article, but though
he lovingly mentions the old catalogues and adds an insert about what a modern
version of the MB-1 would be, he neglects to mention Grant or RBW. I guess it
should be expected. He does mention how the design has allowed him to use the
bike for 27 years in different ways, and that he still rides it. Tempted to
send him a link to the recent catalogue.

Doesn't look like the article is on the web yet.

[RBW] Re: Pics of your Nitto Big Front Rack install?

2018-07-06 Thread ctifusion
Awesome. That makes sense now. It was hard to figure because I didn't have time
to put it in a stand and take off the wheel to line it up. I agree that it's
worth the trouble to not use P-clamps (I knew U clamp sounded weird). But the
extra hardware is expensive so I understand if Riv doesn't want that rack to
hit $250, and that we're all on a budget of some kind with limits.

I'll post a pick after I get home and install the rack.

[RBW] Pics of your Nitto Big Front Rack install?

2018-07-05 Thread ctifusion
I'm out of town for the 4th but right before we left I got a new Nitto big
front rack. When I ordered it the site referenced using U-clamps, but I figured
with all the extra stuff on the fork of the new Atlantis I could mount it
without the U-clamps. Riv was super helpful, and Will added the extra struts
and hardware (for a cost). He said it's what they use if you order one built by
Riv. Thing is, I don't have a good idea of how this should look.

Anyone have a recent Riv with the big front rack installed by riv (or
themselves) and want to share a pic? I'm excited to get this rack on when I get
back and I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks friends,

[RBW] Chain length for long board frames

2018-07-01 Thread ctifusion
I just did my usual eyeball method. Put the chain in a couple different gears
and see what it looks like. Had a funny moment when I first put the chain on. I
hadn't worked with 10 speed before and when the chain was 8 inches too short I
looked at the package and it said 10s and I thought it was a short chain. So I
called my shop and they noted the link number and said it was the longest chain
available.

Trip back to LBS for another chain.

[RBW] Re: 59cm MIT Atlantis build and (short) ride report

2018-06-27 Thread ctifusion
Thanks John and Michael,
I don't have a direct comparison to the recent riv models. My last Riv was
a Quickbeam that I bought in 2006 and just sold this year. I loved the ride
of the QB but I wanted to have a geared Riv and I also realized that as I
got older (and fatter!) I really like big, stable bikes. I am happy to say
that compared to my Surly LHT the Atlantis is a complex and interesting
ride that gives tons of feedback without ever feeling noodle-y. I've heard
people hypothesize that the extra tube doesn't do anything or that it makes
the frame over stiff. All I can say it that it's much more solid than the
QB but still feels like a fancy, well-designed steel bicycle. I can notice
the length of the wheelbase and that is my favorite part. It feels like you
ride "in" the bike and that the bike carries you more. Hard to explain.

I noticed that the water bottle cages are a bit lower than normal but I
can't tell a difference when using my bottle.

I definitely recommend the big Crust bars if you are attracted to the idea.
They have an email sign-up that I think will get you on a list for when
they come out with another run. Otherwise, I'm sure that most people would
love this bike with the wide noodles too.

Hey Virgil, didn't I sell you a LD stem once? Maybe we should go for a ride.

Best,
Brynnar

Re: [RBW] Re: 53 cm LWB Atlantis test ride

2018-06-26 Thread ctifusion
This lines up very well with my experience on the 59 LWB Atlantis. I have
85 miles of mostly paved trails and bike lanes (Indiana is not California)
but I really like how stable and responsive the LWB is, especially
accelerating from a seated position and downhill. Very confidence inspiring
and stable but it still has the alive feel of a Rivendell. Makes me want to
keep riding!

I also really like the LWB designation over the MIT. LWB-A?

Re: [RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-25 Thread ctifusion
I love Nitto stuff so much that I'd never want to ask them to do anything
that puts them at risk, and I agree that even though the Noodle-moose would
be the greatest stem/bar ever there would be no way to get the measurements
correct for even a few, I bet.

On to dreaming of other things. Did I mention that I'm crazy in love with

[RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-25 Thread ctifusion
Thanks for the info Grant. I can understand Nitto's position. I have a lot
of miles on those bars in road and "gravel" conditions and I don't get any
sense that they are weak or dangerous.

Also, not sure what the deleted message said but I surely didn't intend
this to be a controversial post. I'm not a "gravel grinder" guy trying to
change Riv, just the opposite, I think if people had a chance to try extra
wide drop bars they would see how Riv-like the riding position is. I simply
fell out of love with my 48 noodles after riding for a year or so on a bike
with albatross bars (and another with the underrated surly open bar"). My
point is that Rivendell has been instrumental in advancing smart, safe, and
more comfortable ways to ride bikes. I rode tons of road bikes in the 90s
and 00s with standard 42-44cm bars. In general the idea was to stretch out
forward over the bike (long stem helped with the narrow bars). This put
your arms into a more narrow position (and I was also taught to bring my
elbows in). I know a lot of people that still ride this way and I'm not
asking anyone to change, but I just like the more upright riding position
that Rivendell has often supported.

Like I said, I'm not a huge Crust guy. I just happened to see a picture of
that magic beard guy with a prototype of the 666mm bars and reached out to
them at the right time and got a set of the bars. It took a while to get
used to them (and the super short stem set up), and I still think they are
a bit too wide, but I have to say I have been really transformed by the
ability to ride drop bars while staying more in the position one is usually
in with a set of upright bars, and go just a little faster. This has been a
big deal for me. This was the reason I sold my Quickbeam and bought a new
Atlantis. I thought the Atlantis was stout enough to handle the wide bars,
and I love the way the Atlantis rides with the wide bars and huge 55m
Compass tires.

I'll keep an eye on my stem/bar combo, but I can't imagine the 5cm
technomic is a risk in road and gravel trail riding. So maybe we need a
55-58 Noodle AND a pretty 5cm cromo stem? :)

Thanks!

[RBW] Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-23 Thread ctifusion
I'm sure the 666mm Crust bars are way too wide for most, but I love them. And
they don't really make them anyway, I was just in the right place when they
brought out the one run. I keep waiting for someone to put a wide drop bar into
production.

I think a 58 Noodle would be a huge hit for a lot of riders.

Thanks everyone. My 8 year old son picked the dark teal tape from the riv site
and it's a great match. An excellent local wheel builder (Scott at ICS) who
I've known for many years built the wheels. Velocity Atlas with XT/T hubs
(Shimano has added the T for XT touring hub I guess).

Such a fun ride. I'll add some comments after I get a real ride in. Looking
forward to seeing pics of all the new rides!

I need to check how to post pictures but these fit easily on the new Atlantis.
Plenty of clearance on each side of the chainstays. And that's the tightest
spot.

On Velocity Atlas rims. I'd bet it will also be fine on wider rims.

Got the wrong stem and decided I needed a zero setback seatpost to get the
reach I want, so the build is on hold.

I had to get a shorter stem when I first started riding the 48cm noodles

stem that is basically 3-4cm. I love the noodles but I wish Riv/Nitto would
spec a wider version, like a 58cm.

[RBW] How are you going to build your new Atlantis?

2018-05-14 Thread ctifusion
I know for sure that I'm going to build new wheels and I will use the 666mm
wide Crust drop bars, everything else is still to be decided. I'm wondering
about tires as I want the fattest, fastest tires I can find and I'm not
sure what all the options are nowadays. Will the new Compass 700x55s fit?
I'm tempted to do a fancy/hip 1x10 build, but it's more likely that I'll do
a partial vintage build to save money (this would mean taking apart one or
two other bikes that mostly just get ridden around the neighborhood).

I plan to use it as a fair weather commuter, long day with packed lunch
rider, and adventure/expedition/S24 if I can figure out where to go. I have
the time to do a couple 2-3 night tours a summer if I have all my stuff
together. Where to go on a trip like that while leaving from Indianapolis
is another problem/post.

Racks and Bags?

What are you thinking?

[RBW] Re: Canti Sam Hillborne: No Cable Hangers

2018-05-14 Thread ctifusion
I do want to clarify that I was happy to hear that there are no cable
hangers on the Canti Sam/ Atlantis so I could buy them before the day I
decide to build the bike (that's happened before!). And I have ridden
V-brakes and I totally agree that they stop way better than cantis. But I'm
a big guy and most of my bikes are big and heavy with bags that I leave
books in, etc., and I've never had a problem stopping. My commuter (60cm
LHT with Surly racks) has a mis-matched set of old Tektros and I can easily
lock up the rear and can endo with a strong pull of the front lever. If I
was going to do a loaded tour over the Rockies I'd probably put on a set of
V-brakes.

But I just love canti brakes, the look, setting them up, the feel. I have a
whole box of old cantis and I can admit that I occasionally buy vintage
sets on ebay for no good reason. So thanks for building the beautiful
frames with cantilever posts. I'm happy to source the cable hangers myself.

[RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-20 Thread ctifusion
Vince sent me a picture of the 59 with the second top tube. It arcs
(curved) from the seat tube to the down tube with each joining about three
inches from either the top tube or head tube. Vince didn't seem to think it
was super secret, but it is not a staged pic and there are no decals so
maybe it's not one that Riv wanted circulated (I thought the Blug mentioned
more pics to come soon). I'm happy to post it if people think that's okay.

I think it looks cool, especially the fillet brazed joints, and it's
definitely a new style from earlier double top tubes. I ordered mine prior
to seeing it as that seemed to add to the fun of being involved in the
pre-sale.

So, to post or not to post?

[RBW] Re: Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks

2018-04-11 Thread ctifusion
I've had Compass on three bikes and I can't imagine buying any other tire
(except maybe for a total city workhorse/grocery getter). This will fit on
the new Atlantis and other RIv bikes with the 2.2 / 55cm clearance?

Re: [RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-11 Thread ctifusion
Thanks to Dave I was able to order a 59 today (have fun with the QB!).
Maybe a bit on the big side but after a conversation with one of the nice
young fellows at the global headquarters we decided that it was the right
one for me. I'm going to run those super wide Crust (666mm) drops on it at
first. I think with a 5cm technomic or a short dirt drop I'll be able to
get it pretty close to where they are on my 60cm Surly LHT (60.5 TT). With
the Rat Trap Pass tires that bike has 1 cm shorter stand over height but I
should get the bars much higher on the Riv. If not I'm happy to ride
albatross on anything. Going to build some wheels and do a parts
bin/vintage build first and then decide on how to set it up. Anyone
thinking 1X11 or is that too cool already?

They said they would send me a pic of the extra top tube, which he
described as arching from the seat tube to the down tube (??). I figured it
would be fun to wing it and put the money down sight unseen. I don't think
there has been an extra tube on any Riv that I didn't like, so...

It's been 12 years since I bought a Riv and 5 since I put together anything
serious. My wife noted that I have built three vintage bikes in the last
year or two but those don't count!

Is there info on exact tire sizes for the different sizes? I'm between the
59 and 62. I like fat tires so I think I'm comfortable with the 59 which is
exciting as the recent sizing has not made me feel like there was a bike
out there that'd really fit. I'd prefer that they did fat 650b all the way
up the sizes but if I'm in the market for anything it's a fast-ish all-road

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam: A Three Year Retrospective

2016-12-20 Thread ctifusion
Deacon,

Thanks for both posts. Sitting at home on a cold day reading about riding when
I should have just suited up and went out!

This post inspires me to write up a similar retrospective on my Quickbeam. I've
had mine for 10 years and it is the most beautiful, fun, and inspiring bike
I've ever owned. Always makes me happy. This year I put those Barlow Pass tires
on it and was transformed again by the ride.

I hate to admit after all the interesting gear discussion that, being in
Indianapolis, I just run mine single speed. Can't tell you the ratio, just a
little harder than it should be so I can cruise the flats here.

[RBW] Re: I need help. I have become a Riv enabler.

2016-12-20 Thread ctifusion
A1 Cyclery in Indianapolis had a tall Black one this fall, not sure if it's
still there. Beautiful and so classy. I tried to get my buddy to buy the big
Clem they had in stock after his first bike got stolen after his first year
riding. He wasn't ready to spend the $ and we got lucky and found a tall
late-80s GT mountain bike on Craigslist. With some help from A1 we built it up
in budget Riv style. He'll be back for a Riv in a couple years. I could see it
in his eyes!

[RBW] Re: Winter Ramble

2016-12-19 Thread ctifusion
Thanks for the tire comment. I got caught in Indy this year with early winter
weather and no winter tires. I ride my 26inch Surly LHT in the winter here and
the Compass Rat Trap Pass do not handle icy roads well. I'm going to get a set
of the RRs.

Under 20 I go with a quality snowboarding helmet. Don't even need a hat under
until close to 0. Dorky, but also adds some safety when riding in the early
dark evenings.

Bob! Let's have a coffee sometime.

Will these fit on a Quickbeam? I'm still using the stock rims (green, 2004). I
put a set of the 38 Compass tires on this summer and love them but would like a
bit more width if possible. I didn't see these when I got mine.
