Script to Shutdown/Resume 4D on Client?

2000-02-21 Thread Workingmacs

I'm wondering if anyone could point me to an existing script to shutdown and
resume a 4D Server that is running on a machine with Retrospect Client. The
User Manual suggests using QuicKeys or AppleScript to force 4D to write the
data cache to disk. The closest thing I've been able to find is a
client-side script to pause and resume a WebStar server. I suppose that
could be modified to handle 4D, but if something already exists, I'd sure
like to know. Or if someone could tell me how to configure QuicKeys to
handle this, that could be the ticket.

Backup Server Interfering with Timbuktu (MAC)

2000-02-21 Thread Michael L. McLean

Hello

I have recently started using the backup server feature instead of just a
scripted backup. It seems that every time the backup server is active, even
just "waiting," I can not connect to my backup computer via Timbuktu.

Is this a known problem, and/or is there some kind of fix.

Note: the times that I try to connect, after I walk to the computer and
check it the backup server is simply idling, it has completed all its backup
tasks for the day.

Re: Moving To A New System and Backups

One option based on your description is to load the afpd software onto the Linux box
so that you can publish directories as an AppleShare File Server. Then simply have
your (scheduled!) idal backup script run and move the backup to this directory which
can be backed up by retrospect. I've done that on an OS X box, and I have a Linux box
that is running afpd quite happily so that should work.

You can script Retrospect to log into a server volume, storing the userid and password
internally, so that it will log in, do the backup and log out without any required
user intervention.

The only question I can see that might be a problem is the 'endianness' of PrimeBase
as the data files for Intel-based systems are different from those of PowerPC based
systems, although I would guess as long as you put them back by reversing the process
you should be fine. Give it a spin & let us know!

Cheers,

Yamaha 6416 fix

2000-02-21 Thread Hornby, Peter W

Any news yet on the firmware update which Yamaha were alleged
to have delivered to Dantz to address the problems with the
6416 CD-RW drive?

Thanks for any update.

DVD-RAM as backup media

2000-02-21 Thread Patrick McClure

Hi

I recently purchased a Mac G4/400 with the DVD-RAM option, hoping that
this would be a simple backup solution. I had become extremely bored with
the sound of and skeptical of the quality of the Travan 4 (Seagate) tape
backups I was using.

Things haven't worked out quite the way I imagined...it is verry
slow, showing 6mb/min as a final transfer stat (disk copy method,
slightly better for regular backup). You can imagine how long it takes to
copy 2.5GB at that rate. What I don't know is whether this is actually
the speed of the drive or whether some other problem exists in my system.
I don't have any other kind of problem with speed or crashes or anything
elsewhere on my system.

Is there anyone out there who has used DVD-RAM and can relate to me what
I should be expecting in terms of transfer speeds? Or suggestions for
improvement?

Thanks

Patrick

Retrospect hangs up when changing Tapes

2000-02-21 Thread tobias reister

We use a PM9500 with OS 8.5.1 and a DLT-4000. Every time when we have to
change tape while restoring files, Retrospect and the Computer hangs up.
The tape rewinds and just before the DTL gets to green, the Computer
hangs up.

Does anybody know this problem?

Thanks

Retro for Win & Regcopy

2000-02-21 Thread Dean Brissinger

Do I need to use regcopy if I run the Windows version of
Retrospect with 5.0 clients? I remember hearing a discussion that
you do not need Regcopy.exe unless you are backing up using a
Macintosh.

Also, I've been successfully backing up Windows machines to
Retrospect on a Mac for a while. I'm considering reversing the
situation because I can get better backup performance from a Windows
NT backup server. If I backup Macintosh clients to Windows
Retrospect, do I have any new complications I should know about?
Does the restore procedure change for Mac clients? Also, is the data
on tape inter-compatible between platforms?

License manager

2000-02-21 Thread Geoffrey Lee

I've been getting some bizzarre behaviour from the license manager.

Retrospect 4.2(Macintosh): Two strange things happened recently that I
can't find an explanation for. As I understand it, when a new client is
entered into the database, the license manager should automatically
allocate a free activation code to it. Today, I entered a new macintosh
TCP/IP client by dns name and was asked, as normal, for a security code. I
entered this and the client appeared in the database, but with no
activation code. The odd thing being that this doesn't seem to have made
any difference; it gets backed up as it should.

That was the first strange thing. Secondly I activated a macintosh
appletalk client, and was prompted to *enter* an activation code, which I
did. Should this happen?

And just as a general question, when a license code is used, should some
information (the user etc) appear in the manager window? All I have is a
list of codes, an empty column labeled 'status' and a small message at the
bottom saying '69 licenses used, 21 available'- confusing.

Thanks for any help.

RE: nt permissions

2000-02-21 Thread Greg Jewett

To make sure that you are going to get those settings and permissions
backed-up, make sure that you immediate/or scheduled script has the
option to backup the NTFS permissions (a setting under the Windows
Client options).

Also you definitely want to make sure that the registry and other
portions of Windows 2000 (if you are using W2K), are backed up as
well. (also a setting under the Windows Client options)

Re: Backup Server Interfering with Timbuktu (MAC)

Sorry to but in here. I do not have an answer to your question. I don't
currently use the backup server feature. I was just wondering what the
advantages are of that compared to the script feature? I have Retrospect
running on a G4 with ASIP 6.3 running on it.

Thanks,
Jeff

Yamaha said, 3 1/2 weeks ago, that they would have it on their web
site in a few weeks... I'd give 'em a few more to polish it :-)

Problem is that Yamaha sent me a note on Feb 12 stating that this
isn't something they can fix.

Matthew told me Dantz is working on straightening it out now.

I'd also like an answer, because APS has agreed to refund my money,
but I'd love to keep the 6416 if they could just work out this
problem.

If anyone has a recommendation for a good replacement I'd surely
appreciate hearing it.
