Script to Shutdown/Resume 4D on Client?
I'm wondering if anyone could point me to an existing script to shutdown and resume a 4D Server that is running on a machine with Retrospect Client. The User Manual suggests using QuicKeys or AppleScript to force 4D to write the data cache to disk. The closest thing I've been able to find is a client-side script to pause and resume a WebStar server. I suppose that could be modified to handle 4D, but if something already exists, I'd sure like to know. Or if someone could tell me how to configure QuicKeys to handle this, that could be the ticket. Re: Moving To A New System and Backups

What is the best way to perform network backups of a Linux based PrimeBase system? Is it possible for me to run Retrospect on a Mac, having iDal on the same machine, saving the backups locally rather than on the remote system? Then backing up with RetroSpect... Is this even possible?? One option based on your description is to load the afpd software onto the Linux box so that you can publish directories as an AppleShare File Server. Then simply have your (scheduled!) idal backup script run and move the backup to this directory which can be backed up by retrospect. I've done that on an OS X box, and I have a Linux box that is running afpd quite happily so that should work. You can script Retrospect to log into a server volume, storing the userid and password internally, so that it will log in, do the backup and log out without any required user intervention. The only question I can see that might be a problem is the 'endianness' of PrimeBase as the data files for Intel-based systems are different from those of PowerPC based systems, although I would guess as long as you put them back by reversing the process you should be fine. Give it a spin let us know! Retrospect hangs up when changing Tapes
We use a PM9500 with OS 8.5.1 and a DLT-4000. Every time when we have to change tape while restoring files, Retrospect and the Computer hangs up. The tape rewinds and just before the DTL gets to green, the Computer hangs up. Does anybody know this problem? Retro for Win Regcopy
Do I need to use regcopy if I run the Windows version of Retrospect with 5.0 clients? I remember hearing a discussion that you do not need Regcopy.exe unless you are backing up using a Macintosh. Also, I've been successfully backing up Windows machines to Retrospect on a Mac for a while. I'm considering reversing the situation because I can get better backup performance from a Windows NT backup server. If I backup Macintosh clients to Windows Retrospect, do I have any new complications I should know about? Does the restore procedure change for Mac clients? Also, is the data on tape inter-compatible between platforms? -- . . . . . . . . ooo . . . . ooo . . . . . . . . . . . .Dean Brissinger - Systems Administrator. . RE: nt permissions
To make sure that you are going to get those settings and permissions backed-up, make sure that you immediate/or scheduled script has the option to backup the NTFS permissions (a setting under the Windows Client options). Also you definitely want to make sure that the registry and other portions of Windows 2000 (if you are using W2K), are backed up as well. (also a setting under the Windows Client options) ..Greg At 10:28 PM -0700 2/16/00, Craig Isaacs wrote: If I do a full backup of any ntfs parition with retro server 5 will the security/permissions of all files backed up be saved and restored if needed? I'm fairly confident it will, I guess I just need confirmation and assurance of the process from someone with experience of the process. maz Absolutely! However, I highly recommend you test your backups. It's always a good idea to restore occasionally just to make sure everything's working the way you expect it to. Re: Yamaha 6416 fix
Any news yet on the firmware update which Yamaha were alleged to have delivered to Dantz to address the problems with the 6416 CD-RW drive? Yamaha said, 3 1/2 weeks ago, that they would have it on their web site in a few weeks... I'd give 'em a few more to polish it :-) -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ben Liberman -- -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
