We have a Sony DDS-4 which can write to 90-meter tapes, but not the
60-meter variety. The backup speed is nothing short of phenominal. It is
best to use the 150-meter DDS-4 tapes which give a 40GB capacity. Highly
recommend this drive.

We would hopefully be keeping old catalogs and 60/90 metre tapes, as
they're completed (archived) jobs from years gone by.

There's no need to write to the ancient 60 metre tapes, but being
able to write to the 90 metre tapes would be an asset.

DDS-4. I'd suggest getting rid of the 60-Meter tapes and re-writing the
data onto longer tapes. Are you keeping the catalogs as well as the
tapes? Are these tapes archives or backups?

DDS-3 or DDS-4?

2000-03-06 Thread SK Suh

Am shopping for a DAT drive replacement for our aging Dynatek DDS-1
(or -2?) unit for archival use. This DAT would be attached to an
older beige Power Macintosh G3 and would be writing data from a local
hard drive, not over the network.

Ideally I'd like to be able to utilize newer, faster and
higher-capacity media while retaining backwards read/write capability
with our massive library of 60 and 90 metre DAT media.

Would DDS-4 be worthwhile despite the price, higher media costs and
limited backwards compatibility, especially given its improved
performance? Otherwise, would it make more sense to consider a proven
DDS-3 solution?

Thanks for all the comments on VXA, it really sounds like the way to go, so
I'm going to be getting one when I get my new G4.

Thanks again,

Run Samba on the UNIX boxes to provide SMB filesharing. You can then mount
the shared drives on the NT box (if that's your backup platform) or buy DAVE
for the Mac OS and use that to mount the UNIX and NT drives on the Mac in
order to back them up using Retrospect.

Yamaha CRW6416/CRW4416 firmware

2000-03-06 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Hello all,

Most of you probably know about the recent ongoing problems with Yamaha
CRW6416 and CRW4416 CD-RW drives. The bug will cause the drive to
intermittently return error 100 or 100 (device rejected command) when used
with Retrospect or Retrospect Express on slower Macintosh and PC models. We
are pleased to report that these problems have been fixed with the latest
version of Yamaha¹s firmware for each drive.

If you have not yet been personally notified of this solution via e-mail,
please send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be sent the updated
firmware. You will also need to download a "flasher" utility from Yamaha's
website. All details will be included in a letter accompanying the firmware
update.

Yamaha is still working on fixing the firmware. However, they have agreed to
allow Dantz to distribute a beta firmware version to its customers reporting
problems. Dantz has tested this beta firmware and found that it fixes the
error 100 problems.

Please keep in mind that this is beta firmware and Dantz cannot accept
responsibility for any unforeseen problems.

When Yamaha has posted the official firmware release, we will notify the
list with the appropriate URL.

If you have any trouble using the firmware update or questions about it,
please contact Yamaha at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you have problems with Retrospect after applying the firmware update or
have any other Retrospect questions, please contact Dantz Technical Support
at 925.253.3050 or at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Solution ->[SOT?] Retrospect causing ASIP crash?

2000-03-06 Thread Craig Gaevert

Well, I got around to investigating my problems with this machine this weekend. It
turned out to be either a bad sector or just corrupt files. While making a backup
copy of the files, the machine continued to seize whenever it hit on of the corrupt
files (endless restarts), but once all were copied, a reformat of the drive and
reinstallation
of the data has resulted in a functional machine and smooth backup. Thanks to all who
offered suggestions.

Re: VXA

2000-03-06 Thread Garret J. Cleversley

I have been so happy with not only the drive itself but the company, tech
support etc.. That I became a reseller for VXA Drives.

I use two drives myself to back up Graphic files over the network for 30
workstations. Mostly Mac but some PC's win95/98. I get about 38 gig on a
tape which isn't too bad since graphics files are not really compressible.

I get about 180 megs/minute transfer rate and have done several restores. I
replaced a Sony DDS-3 because I was tired of having to use 2-3 tapes for a
nightly backup. This has made it much easier for me.

like I said I was so happy with the drive I now sell them.

Re: VXA

2000-03-06 Thread Carolyn James

Hi,
Yes, I've been using Ecrix's VXA drive with my mac for about a month. I
love using it. It beats the 4mm tapes and swapping them out all of the
time. I've done a small restore over the network to try it out and it
seems to work well. You can't beat the price for the volume.

Re: vxa

2000-03-06 Thread Gene Kubicki

I have had a VXA drive here for about 3 months. Aside from some long
seek (finding the beginning of the tape) times if you crash Retrospect
in the middle of a backup and the fact that it is noisy compared to the
DDS3 drive I was using, It is very fast (~30% faster than DDS3) and
reliable (several complete restores).
