Re: Repost: miscompare problem
Dan: I have experienced several network related problems when I upgrade an S-900 with that E100 card to anything past 8.1. I suspect that the E100 drivers have problems with the Open Transport network changes that Apple made in 8.6, then 9. I'm slowly trying to rid myself of all the S900's at our location because of this. I've given up trying to get them to work with modern OS versions. Also, in my experience, Retrospect has become much more sensitive to SCSI errors since 4.2. I think I remember the Retrospect folks saying that this is because it now better uses the speed associated with a Fast SCSI or LVD. Apparently, the tradeoff for this speed is less fault tolerance. Some of the Dantz folks on the list can explain it better. on 2/15/01 8:48 AM, Dan Knight at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I posted this over the weekend and haven't had a single suggestion. Has nobody seen this problem before? I'm back to the list after a month off. I now work from home and have run into a problem with backup. Earlier this week I swapped components between my SuperMac S900 and SuperMac J700. Both machines have the same motherboard, although the J700 has two less PCI slots on that motherboard. Both computers have Newer G3 daughter cards and Umax SuperMac E100 cards, which provide 10/100 ethernet and fast-wide SCSI. I use a VXA drive for backup. Everything was working flawlessly under Mac OS 9.0.4 and Retrospect 4.2 on the S900. I set the S900 up for one of my sons, moving the hard drive from it to the J700. Everything should have run exactly as before. I should be so lucky. Ever since then, I've been getting miscompare errors. The only two changes are the box and an upgrade to Mac OS 9.1 just before I moved all my files to my new titanium PowerBook. I have upgraded to Retrospect 4.3; this has not helped. I suspect either the E100 card or an incompatibility with Mac OS 9.1. Before I tear two computers apart to swap cards or do a system downgrade, I'd appreciate feedback from list members as to the more likely cause. Thanks! Re: G4s and error 519
Adrian. The termination problem was on the client, which is an ASIP server. It just took out that particular client. However, if there is a termination problem on the Retrospect 'server' then I guess you could see 519 errors. It sounds like you need to talk with the folks at Retrospect in person. Their tech support is second to none and they can help better when you call. Did it take out the whole backup or just specific clients? Unlike Ken, we have no problem with server Mac and in our case it is only the G4s that have the problem and only the CLIENT drops the network connection. The backup Mac is fine and can go on to back up the other clients. The client will regain the network after a restart or sleep. It sounds just like the symptoms of the problem that was supposed to fixed with the Ethernet update, expect that the Ethernet update doesn't fix it and when I went and checked the details (TIL 25147) it doesn't actually seem to be the same problem. I'll let the Dantz folks respond to this charge, since they have heard it before, but when I did my job and got the network and clients working right, Retrospect worked right. It is the best trouble-finding tool out there. I know that if Retrospect works, everything else will. That's not a fault of Retrospect, but a feature, the way I see it. I want everything perfect for a backup, since a less than perfect backup is absolutely useless. That one byte it missed and didn't tell me about may have been in the middle of a file that could cost me several thousands dollars. Retrospect is very demanding. It requires that everything be right in your machine and network setup (Imagine that). If you are having 519 errors, there is a problem in your setup, either hardware, software or network. You most likely either have a SCSI problem (which was the case the last time I had a 519, termination problems), a system incompatibility (sometimes a corrupt system or mismatched components (like OS 8.5 with ASIP 5 (that was pretty stupid)) or a network problem (replace those old hubs with switches, which creates more potential problems). If Retrospect does not have these capabilities, is there any other programs available to do this? Setup: Blue and White G3, Retrospect 4.2, lots of RAM, up to date firmware. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Mac OS 9 has encryption capabilities, and while the experts debate just how good it is, you might still want to try it. You could encrypt the files before you archive them and while users would be able to restore the files, they would still have to encrypt them to view them. Backup set format inconsistency
Backing up Windows NT Client using Travan drive (internal ATAPI backing up hard drive on NT Client machine only. Backs up at about 35 MB/min. Compares at about 8 MB/min. Checking error log, get message: Backup set format inconsistency. Would this indicate a tape problem, a drive problem, operator error (I am a Mac guy having to deal with NT Client) or what? When I first installed Retrospect, got 35MB/min on both backup and compare. Thanks, and after Matthew emails back and says to call tech support, I plan to do just that. Re: Finding backup device
Thanks Matthew, I'd really like to try that, but the manual won't install on the server, something about entering safe mode or something (remember, I'm a Mac guy trying to deal with an NT client and have no idea what's going on here). When I try to download the windows manual, it comes in an exe file. Is there any way to get a pdf copy of the windows manual so that I can read in on my Mac. I don't have access to any other Windows machine that I can try this on. Thanks. I wouldn't worry about the USB options, there aren't any USB tape drives anymore. I use a 7600 with a LaCie DDS-3 drive attached and get good results (remembering to clean the heads every 15 hours or so). Ours cost about $1,000 US direct from LaCie http://www.lacie.com/scripts/backup/backup.cfm. DDS 3 tapes cost about $25. These drives have hardware compression and I back up almost everything we have every night on them. We backup about 25 GB a night. You probably need to get past the nubus Mac and get into PCI. Even a 6400 or 7500 will do and you can put fast ethernet on it pretty cheap and get a lot of backup for your money. Hope this helps. Is it fast enough to warrant a SCSI accelerator (F, F/W, U or U2)? Because of differing drive speeds and the difference in content, we get as little as 10 mb/minute on one really slow drive and as much as 110 mb/minute on one of the Fast-Wide drives. All of this is across the network because we use a dedicated Retrospect server. The servers being backed up are 8600/300's with F internal (may be F/W, I'd have to check the documentation) and one with Adaptec F/W card and F/W externals. Our DDS-3 is a standard SCSI interface (no F, F/W or otherwise). I would guess (This is only a guess) that if your DDS-3 has a fast SCSI interface, it would work faster, but the tape speed may be the limiting factor here. I don't have any evidence either way.
