Re: Why won't Retrospect autorun?

2000-05-04 Thread Craig Gaevert

It is clearly stated in the Black Watch readme that Retrospect will not run if
Black Watch is active. In order to have Retro run it must be opened/launched
and then it will complete backup operations even though Black Watch is active.
Black Watch, IMO, is good stuff.

I had this problem a little while ago, and I was running a screen saver
called BlackWatch. Nice screen saver, but while it was running, Retrospect
wouldn't autorun. As a result, I would arrive at the office in the morning,
move the mouse to deactivate the screen saver (to see if the backup worked),
and the script would start shortly after. Removing BlackWatch worked.

Correct, 6.1. The 6.1.1 Web and File Extension fixed this problem.

Our reserve is set to 155MB. Should be enough for Retrospect :-)

Which Version of ASIP are you running?
There were a couple of versions that under the right circumstances didn't honor the
ASIP "memory reserved for other applications" setting.

I usually run set the reserve to give Retrospect a comfortable room to run in (I
believe Retrospect uses temporary memory as well).

Hope this helps.

Wow! I have seen this a few times but my rule of thumb *is* to reboot
before going away! If I desperately want the backup to work, I will
open Retrospect as well.

My guess has been that some programs are good at ruining a portion of
the memory used by autolaunches. And Matthew Tevenan's suggestion
about a damaged extension sounds plausible; it is helpful because it
gives offers a very specific cure (that may not work though).

With a lot of macs at work I just learn live with these things. I see
similar sorts of problem (I believe) with the failure of Remote
Access Disconnect to disconnect (no problem if you open the main
program), loss of network after using a couple of different Adobe
program versions, and several other experiences that escape me for
the moment. Exact troubleshooting is just not on with these type of
problems that occur only after using many or certain combinations of
programs. I know how it might be fixed. But who has time to do often
the gruesome process of reinstalling the Mac system and a complex set
of applications, then manually reset all the preferences (I routinely
trash several preference files to solve some sorts of problems)? [I
know what you are thinking but 'No', the Retro backup of the fresh
machine won't have the newer application, and 5 different upgrades on
it!] Sorry Owen, it's not much help.

Re: Why won't Retrospect autorun?

2000-04-26 Thread Craig Gaevert

Having read some the replys, I'll throw my 2 cents in too. I have
noticed that if I've rebooted my backup machine, a good 50% of the time
Retrospect will not launch by itself when scheduled. When I first
launch Retrospect after it has missed a backup, it will then start to do
the backup, and then continue to do backups normally. Thus I find that
I often have to remember to boot Retrospect after booting the machine
(probably ought to put an alias in the startup folder).

dunno but I'd like the answer also. With a machine left for days
sitting and just ASIP file serving (no reboots, no changes) and Retro
at night when ASIP is quiet, about 10% of the time Retro just fails
to auto-launch. Manually launch it and the backups begin and it goes
on merrily auto-launching for maybe several days before it happens
again.

Re: Why won't Retrospect autorun?

2000-04-26 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Owen,

If Retrospect is no longer autolaunching, and you've verified that
"Autolaunch Retrospect" is checked in Special>Preferences, read the
following:

Does Retrospect try to run a script right after you start it, but not at the
specified time? If not, verify that your script is scheduled correctly. Go
to Automate>Preview from the Retrospect Directory. Are there scripts
scheduled to run? If there are, is the top one scheduled to run soon (as
opposed to months or years in the future)? If it is scheduled to run some
time in the future, you may have deferred execution of the script. Change
this by editing your script.

If there are no scripts scheduled to run, you need to reschedule your
scripts. Go to Automate>Scripts from the Retrospect Directory to do this.

If Retrospect tries to run a script right after you launch the program, the
extension which autolaunches Retrospect, Retro.Startup, may be damaged.
Replace it by doing the following: quit Retrospect, trash Retro.Startup
(inside the Extensions folder in the System Folder), restart the computer,
launch and quit Retrospect, then restart the Mac again. This will produce a
fresh copy of Retro.Startup.

Let us know (at [EMAIL PROTECTED]) if you still have problems.

P.S. I've found that Retrospect can also get confused if you're launching
multiple copies of multiple versions every day, but happily that's only a
problem for a very small group of people: namely Dantz tech support. :)
