I get the same rust colored stains on a measuring cup that I use. After I have finished brewing my CS I strain it using a coffee filter. The container I pour it into has a chip in the glass (this is the measuring cup) and I have noticed a rust coloration forming in the uneven surface of the chip.

When I use 4-9v batteries with rods 1-1/2 apart, I immediately get rust coloured cloudy material coming off the negative wire and rising to the surface. When I go to 3 batteries, it stops, and I see no cloud at all, not even a milky white. I use distilled water with a starter batch of CS in it. So
