I think Soft users underestimate Render Layers in Maya. Granted, the
horror stories would turn anyone off... but like anything there are the
workarounds to the minefield. #1 being, don't put materials on polygon

Thanks for speaking up, Laurence. I'm sure your intentions are good, and
the effort is appreciated. We are however, very upset with your bosses
Hello,
My name is Laurence Cymet, I am the product manager for lighting and rendering
on Maya. In the past few weeks I've been out to talk to many Softimage
customers, and I can certainly understand your frustration with the move to EOL
Softimage, so we're doing what we can to improve things.
Hi Laurence
I appreciate the offer. I wish more Maya peeps would have chimed in years
ago. One of the things I love most about Softimage are the Render Passes/
Partitions/ Overrides. I know Maya added render layers some time in 2008 I
believe but from what I heard from maya users was that it
Hi Laurence,
With all do respect to you personally, but I still don't understand why
these kind of questions are being asked -now-.
AD had SI for 5 years, and most of the SI team went to AD as well as
part of the aquisition.
With all this recent talk about making Maya better and looking to
In my opinion either the current Maya pass system gets improved to
something that is functional and doesn't break easily or Autodesk
implements a new more nodal approach to deal with passes which is reliable
and doesn't get abandoned as a feature (keeps improving and/or bug fixed)
along the years.

Hi Laurence,
Thanks for requesting our feedback, since this is probably one of
our biggest concerns.
Before we go through the obvious, do you
understand the softimage passes/partition/override? How do you compare them
to Render Layers in Maya? How do you think the Maya RL can be
improved?

decision-making and how it has played out so far. Please don't take it

By Jove, I think he's got it!

One question -- might just be a terminology/translation issue between Mayan
and Softese -- in point 3, when you say without entering the layer, I
assume you mean what currently happens when you click on/highlight the
layer. If that's correct, then yeah, you'd
I am not sure I saw one particular thing covered - when I build render passes new geo gets added along the way
after setting up the initial passes. When I do this I need to put this geo into a new partition and create a new pass for that geo. The new geo needs to be handled in
This is excellent to see, Laurence. Thank you for the interest.

Hi Laurence:
I think a lot of confusion (imho) stems from the different ways
different renderers implement their UIs into Maya, especially how

Is there a way we can actually improve on the process? Perhaps overrides
