Downloading pdf files and Adobe Reader

2009-04-18 Thread DoctorBill

I've been downloading some pdf files on Reloading from Dillon Precision.

http://www.dillonprecision.com/

They set it up as a page by page thing and the pages are about 2.5 MB
each as pdf.

The process is slower than getting a kid to eat Broccoli !

I cannot tell how much progress is being made until the page is finished
loading and then Adobe Reader starts working...

Questions:

Is there a way to speed this up (w/o going to DSL - I'm on dial-up) ?

Is there an Adobe Reader plug-in that would speed up things?

Is there a way to see what % the process is at - like when the Download
Manager shows % loaded ?

BTW - the process is not thru the Download Manager...

I thank all of you for your assistance.

This problem is usually caused by the Web site and not anything on your
computer. This often happens when the Web server is sniffing for what
kind of browser you are using. It sniffs for Firefox, which is wrong.
It should sniff for Gecko. (Often, however, sniffing cannot be
justified at all.)

To compensate, install either the PrefBar extension or the User Agent
Switcher. Either of them can be used to make a Web server think you are
using Firefox or even IE when you are actually using SeaMonkey. This is
called spoofing.

If spoofing resolves your problem, however, you should attempt to
contact the owner of the Web site and inform him or her of the problem.
If it's a business site, a postal letter to the CEO can be effective.

If spoofing resolves your problem, you should also file a Mozilla bug
report. Go to the Web site. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Help
Report Broken Web Site].

The only thing I can think of is to download the PDF first, then view
it on your local machine. You can download by using Shift+click on the
PDF link rather than just clicking on it. This will open the Save As
dialog. When you save the file to your local machine, it will show you
progress.

The downside is that you have to save to your local disk, but at least
you get the progress of the download.

That didn't work..but it led me to right click and Save Target as...
which in my feeble old brain, I keep forgetting about.

THAT goes to the Download Manager.

At least now I can bypass SM having to load Adobe Reader up to see the file.

I can do that later when I am done.

Thanks for the advice.

In my setup, Flash, Java, and Micro$oft's Media Player all work just
fine while their plugins remain in their non-SeaMonkey directories.

When SeaMonkey reports that Flash is not installed, it's actually the

sniffing. Only changing the UA string (e.g., via PrefBar or User Agent

server sniffs or (best) creates a Web site that doesn't need sniffing.

I finally made it!
The problem was the package manager (I'm using linux) wasn't
installing the plugin in the right place!

So I uninstalled the previous installations and downloaded the tar.gz
package instead of the .deb. I just had to run the installation
program in the shell and manualy type the directory where SM is
installed.

Now my question is how come the plugin doesn't install in the right
place? I just followed the instructions from the adobe site and it
didn't work!
Do you think this should be reported to the site or it's just my
computer's fault?

no, if you don't have SeaMonkey running, including shutting down the QuickLaunch option, then

As I had quick launch active, that explains then why the -p didn't have an

tried that and it still didn't work. Recently, I uninstalled Macromedia
FlashPlayer thinking that since Adobe bought it, didn't need it. I do
have Adobe (Flashplayer)10 Plug-in in my Control Panel llist of programs.

So...tried another install (having d/l and saved it previously) and it
installed it into the Opera pgm. plug-in folder. Although I did once d/l
Opera, I don't use it. So, I copied all the files from the Opera plug-in
folder to the SM program folder and still no joy.

What am I missing?

TIA

uninstall Flash. Then go into the flash program
directory and remove any left over files. Reinstall
Flash. When you do all this, do so with SM closed.

I receive and send mail on a desktop PC and on a laptop PC..
Is there a way to merge the Inbox and Sent folders on both PCs , so
that both are current and complete??
Can the same be done for Bookmarks??

are the two computers connect through a network? If so, then why don't
you have one inbox and sent for both? Same with bookmarks?

For bookmarks, on one of the computer, create a directory called
bookmarks. Then from the browser, click on Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks,
Tools, Export. Now, Export your bookmarks to that directory you created.
Now, from the bookmark manager, click on File, Open, and locate that
bookmark file. Now from the other computer, open the bookmark manager,
and click on File, Open and locate that bookmark file. There, done. Both
computers sharing the same bookmark file.

For mail, on one computer, from the mail application, click on Edit,
Mail Newsgroups Account Settings, select the account, then under
Server Settings, on the bottom right you will see Local Directory. Note
the location of this directory. Now, go to the other computer, and do
the same thing, but this time click on the Browse button, and have it
point to the other location. Once you've done that, close and reopen SM.
Now, both SMs should be using the same accounts.

The problem with this system is that a laptop is intended to be
portable. As long as both machines are connected to the same network,
this is a fine idea, but when the laptop is used at a remote location,
this will no longer work.

What I do is to point both the laptop and the desktop to a third
location, a usb flash drive. All my mail folders are kept on this drive.
When I am at home, the drive is plugged into the desktop, and
available on the network for the laptop.

On the road, I take the usb drive with me, and plug it in to the laptop.
With Mac OSX Leopard, I can use one profile for both home and remote
uses. On Win XP, you will probably need home and away profiles fro this
to work.

Note, I am the only user accessing this data. If you have multiple
users who might be accessing the same data at the same time, this would
not be a very good idea.
