2004-02-27 Thread Pedro Quaresma

Well that's why I used famous betweeen inverted commas :) I just wanted to point that, as far as I know, KIXX was unique in that regard. Games without copy protection are useful for WHDLoad users.

Besides, it's true that being famous doesn't mean it sells for a lot on eBay. Unless it is auctioned with the label RARE! of course :D

Hi!
Is the list going to be only adventures/RPGs or other type of games too?

There are also german and israeli-versions of Lucas games
that I haven't listed (that we discussed last year a bit too)
just because at the moment I don't think to collect them;
I'm collecting way too much at the moment anyways ;)
On the other hand when you collect a lot, there's
rarely more than a brief stop in finding
something you're looking for.

I don't know them all and to include them
would require quite some detective work/time,
so I don't necessarily want to do that right now.
>From top of my head a few:

- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (German, with poster of the cover
art)
- Monkey Island (German, disk)
- Loom (Israeli)
- Day of the Tentacle (German)
- Vollgas / Full Throttle (German)
etc...

And I'd surely include The Dig from 1995 as I for one regard it
one of the best adventure games ever made.
The atmosphere and ambient music are brilliant.
The CD soundtrack for it is from 1996.
I'd regard it highly collectible too.
German or some other version of this had a normal bigger
manual, as all the other versions I've seen only have the
CD-sized manual.

BTW they really should make sequal for the game;
though I don't know if it's such a good idea after all
at the current video game market (the lack of inspiriation/brain
and current stage of 3D doesn't attract me at all).
And surely it should be 2D.
I haven't followed the current gaming for some time;
is either Full Throttle 2 and Sam Max 2 anymore on production?

And I think you're choice for not going for variants after
the newer Lucas-games; they seem like a mess.
F.ex. I have Scandinavian box version of Grim Fandango
and Curse of Monkey Island.
So what I'm saying there might be all kinds Timbuktu-variants or sorts :)
(Not saying that in a negative way or anything.)

(Updating Tolkien-collecting to all the modern platforms would be horrible
too;
PS2, Gameboy, X-Box, Gameboy Advande, Gamecube...
The horror, the horror...)

Full Throttle (the attached image) (I need more info on this one)

That's the most common version I'm aware of
(large two-piece high box); could you inform me too what you mean?-)
Here are my Lucas scans; click to see bigger (if you haven't noticed :):
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_fin_games_lucasarts.html

I only know the regular portioned box (more height than width)
and the wide box for it.

** I am almost 100% certain there is no other versions of Zak

Yeah, it's probably time to take that out from my list :)
(Though there is that KiXX XL two-piece box,
but it doesn't count to me.)

[Nazgûl hologram] Hold on, this game is
from the 80's. And you are saying you ordered it using the coupon
in the game now, 15+ years later?? Or am I missing something
here. Do you mean you just got it off eBay from some guy in the
UK?Hehe, you're just drawing your own conclusions :)Yeah I bought it
from eBay UK.At the time (probably 1985-86)it was available for ordering
only in those places I mentioned.Actually, I remembering reading on the
netcouple years ago someone sent a 3.5" disk to 5.25" floppy-replacement
coupon (which apparently didn't have an expirement day)with the disks to
LucasArts just for fun and the heck of it.The game was probably The Secret
of Monkey Island.Obviously they didn't have floppies of it anymore, but
some weeks later he received Monkey Island Madness on CDor something
alike. That's quite honorable from LucasArts.Does someone remember
the link for this?- Jukka--http://koti.mbnet.fi/~psychic/eng_index.html

2004-02-26 Thread Jukka Eronen
Yeah, both Zak and Maniac Mansion have
regular and enhanced versions regarding resolution;
both are 16 colors.
Jim already posted links but here are some nice comparisons too:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/pics/temp/temp_maniac_comparison.jpg
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/pics/temp/temp_zak_comparison.jpg

I have the Maniacs on my harddrive.
The first version is about 300K and the later is about 650K.
I don't think I have enhanced Zak.

Then it gets confusing which box versions included which version.
Since I recall my later 1989 PC-version (with 3.5 5.25 disks)
which you'd think is the enhanced one, is in fact the first version.
(Though I don't know if this matters for the lists sake.)

The CURIOUS Guide will cover ALL games...that are action/strategy games
made between 1981 and 1983 for the VIC-20. :-)

That was a joke...it will cover any game from 77 - 93 plus any game
deemed collectible or interesting after that timeframe.

Yeah :) I was just confused because we were listing only adventures
from Lucas, and not the many Indiana Jones -games,
arcade games (like Ballblazer), Night Shift, etc...

2004-02-26 Thread Freddie Bingham
The KIXX re-releases of the Lucasfilm games have very little value. Just
$5-$10 for Maniac Mansion and Zak.

I've found reports that the Enhanced Maniac Mansion contains a poster of Zak
McKracken (instead of Star Wars) in the game room. I loaded the Maniac
Mansion from my DOTT Tri-Box CD and it was the V1 (not enhanced), same with
the Maniac Mansion on the DOTT CD in the Lucasarts Archives. I did that
because I found it commonly reported that the enhanced MM debuted in DOTT.
I then loaded Zak and MM from the Lucasarts Classics (from 1992) and voila
there are the enhanced versions of both (As reported by SCUMMVM). I think
it is rather safe to assume this is where the enhanced versions made their
debut. Now if you were going to play Zak, you would still want to play the
256 color FM Towns version.

Most of the early On-Line Systems games included catalogs.

What about 1983-86 ?
None of my games have catalogs from that period
but that could be bad luck
(King's Quest III gray is sealed so don't know about that).
Some registration cards do have lists of games.

Josh Lulewicz wrote:

It says Big $avings Inside in the lower right hand corner.
It came with just about every game released toward
the end of 1991 and most of 1992.

I've thought that as of 1991 catalog; that explains a lot.
So they used it for that long.
I think I have two variations of it;
one is wider (probably US) than the other (Europe).
Will have to check.

So it's probably 1990 I'm after; I know these,
any other from that year because the first is not
a regular catalog and the other is a small tri-fold:
- New Creations from Sierra: A Sierra News Magazine Reprint (Fall 1990)
- Sierra - Amiga only

Nope. These games are not amenable to clue books really since they are
action/strategy games (the last two anyways)

Dragons of Flame and Heroes of the Lance have clue books
and their action, so one couldn't be sure.
Though the latter is only couple of pages long/short.

I don't collect the war games either, but I try to collect
those early catalogs too (and prototype box shots of them too to my page).
There's something fascinating about catalogs :).
The alternative/unreleased covers they sometimes include
are surely the most interesting.
And f.ex. this is great work of art was used only as a cover for
a catalog (to best of my knowledge); that shows class from SSI:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/pics/gamecollection/catalogs/ssi_spring1986_big

Could the art be derived from some SSI fantasy game
(or just something they didn't find other use for) ?
The figure on the left is probably the only indicator
if it's on some game too.

BTW off-topic; anyone having old Walt Disney Home Video catalogs?
Mainly looking for rental catalogs, if such exist (I'd sure think they
would).
Web links are welcome too.

Josh Lulewicz wrote:

I have spoken to a few ex-Sierra people and none of them remember it.
All they know of is the Roberta/Hot-tub version.
It is quite possible that it was just a mock up made
for that picture of games (featured in the 10th Anniversary catalog).

That's an interesting point.
Though even as a mock-up, it sure would be interesting to see
as whole and surely doesn't diminish it's collecting value :)

Well, actually I'd give half of my game collection for
Lord of the Rings: Journey to Rivendell -protoype box (mock-up).

BTW, I noticed you had a pic of the LOTR limited edition Nazgul hologram

I bought it couple of monts ago from UK.
It was only available for purchasers of LOTR: Game One
in Great Britain, Channel Island and the Isle of Mann
(that last place always amuses me; if you've seen
The Fast Show you know what I mean :).

I don't know anyone else who owns one.
This is the regular version; the price mentioned
in for a deluxe-one is outrageous.
My PC-version of LOTR: Game One -manual (was it 1987?)
doesn't include the offer anymore.

Though the product itself isn't as classy as one would expect.
The wooden frame is poorly/uneavenly cut
and it bothers a bit that Nazgul is handwritten
just like that as it should be Nazgûl.

At least Tolkien doesn't write it any other way.
I have LOTR as a text file where I just checked;

2004-02-25 Thread Jukka Eronen
Do you have both of these? Do you think it is possible that these two
copies are for two different systems, i.e. Amiga or IBM or C64.

Yep, as said the ones at this page are from my collection
(click on mini pics to enlarge covers):
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_eng_games_lucasarts.html

My C64 versions has that 1988 box and PC has 1989 box.
Don't know if Amiga, PC, Atari or other platforms were
released in 1988 box too...
(Had another Amiga-version earlier and it was 1989 too).
I don't want to rip my C64 platform-tape off the Zak cover :)
as under that would read some other platform.

Yeah, collecting is quite insane :)
The previous reminds this; taken from a game forum:

'Rainbow Islands: The game is sometimes called Bubble Bobble 2. However,
two other games --Bubble Symphony: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 and
Bubble Bobble 2-- claim the same name. Rainbow Islands happens after
Bubble Bobble. Bubble Symphony happens after Bubble Memories, which is
called Bubble Bobble 3, so Bubble Symphony is really Bubble Bobble 4 or 5.
Bubble Bobble 2 also happens after Bubble Memories, so it is either Bubble
Bobble 4 or 5. Bubble Symphony's song titles, which refer to Bub and Bob as
Grandfather, are true, then Bubble Symphony is Bubble Bobble 5 and Bubble
Bobble 2, which features Robby, the son, is Bubble Bobble 4. But then
again, the intro of Bubble Symphony refers to Bubby and Bobby as the
children of Bub and Bob, so Bubble Symphony is Bubble Bobble 4.'

(And apparently it doesn't end even there...)

Is that the one offerred in the Melbourne House game? Can you send me the

If they didn't sell many they may have had a bunch leftover. I keep hoping

Reminds me of when Mindscape used to be here in town (used to be in
Northbrook, IL). I rode there on my bicycle in 1987 when I was stuck in
The
Mist and needed hints. The receptionist was surprised when she learned I
just
got on my bike and rode about 7 miles to ask questions. It was my turn to
be
surprised when she told me that hints to The Mist were $5. I paid, and
got
two xerox'd sheets of paper with questions and answers. I still have this
somewhere and could probably dig it up if there is massive demand for it,
but
I highly doubt it :) Anyway, that was the official clue book for The
Mist,
and I know because I got it directly, hand to hand, from Mindscape.

I got something like this from ICOM. May have a Mindscape one too, I can't
remember.

The hi-res version if Zak that you have is the FM Towns (Japanese PC
Console) 256 color version that is playable on the SCUMM emulator. I do
own a shrinkwrapped copy of this one. I do believe the enhanced maniac

No, it is not. What I have is clearly a 320x200 @ 16 color version, not FM
Towns 256-color version. Here is a screenshot of the low-res one most people
have:

	http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,2/gameId,305/gameShotId,8122/

..and here is the same shot from the high-res one:

	http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,2/gameId,305/gameShotId,3579/

And to further bake your noodle, here is a low-res original Maniac Mansion:

	http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,2/gameId,714/gameShotId,8520/

..and here is the high-res 16-color version:

	http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,2/gameId,714/gameShotId,30499/

Before you start tearing your hair out, I have verified that the high-res MM
was a UK release (go to MobyGames.com and look at the DOS UK release back box,
it has the high-res shots on it), and the high-res Zak was a KIXX Australian
release.

The remaining question: Are the euro high-res versions worth more than the
original ones? CURIOUS!

Re: [SWCollect] Sierra/Lucas/Tolkien/Ultima/ADD/SSI - info and questions

2004-02-24 Thread Howard Feldman

Hey Jukka, glad you found this list, welcome!

 1. Did old SSI fantasy games (non-ADD) have
clue books other than Realms of Darkness?

I bought most of these new back in the 80's, and the answer is no, none
came with a clue book except Realms of Darkness. (Eternal Dagger has a
'strategy guide' that came with it..

 2. Did these SSI ADD-games have clue books:
   * Neverwinter Nights (1991)
   * War of the Lance (1989)
   * DragonStrike (1990)

Nope. These games are not amenable to clue books really since they are
action/strategy games (the last two anyways)

 4. Do you have knowledge on Sierra, Lucas and/or SSI catalogs
 or even pictures of them?
There are listing of these catalogs I know at my site with pics, too.

I have SSI catalogs from 1984 onwards - I'm not sure how many catalogs
exist prior to this, but probably only conatining their war games (which
I dont collect).

For Sierra I have a pic of an early On-Line systems catalog, date
unknown. It is just a 2-page sheet of cardboard with lots of text.
After that I have 1987 and onwards.

I also haven't seen these though I've seen the titles somewhere:
 - SSI Summer 1986
 - SSI Spring 1987
 - SSI Spring 1988
 - SSI Spring 1989

I have (pics of) the 86 and 87 ones but dont have a Spring 88 or 89 -
these probably dont exist (sinc eI have gone through a LOT of SSI games
from this era and never had one).

BTW, I noticed you had a pic of the LOTR limited edition Nazgul hologram
- any idea how rare this is? Did you pick it up somewhere or are you
the original owner? These things were expensive so I cant imagine they

Well in a way yes, though not official. Since it was so long ago and I was not on the net I sent to SSI when I got stuck in some of the RPGs I played. They sent me printed lists of "clues" for the games. Standard issue, not just answers to my questions. Wonder if I still have any? ;) Phantasie games for sure.

Since I might have come to the source of knowledge

2. Did these SSI ADD-games have clue

3. Was "Chronicles of Osgorth: The Shattered

obscure. According to box back theywere going to release sequals for
"Chronicles" but apparently never did. Was it released only as
the large box version?

4. Do you have knowledge on Sierra, Lucas

From LucasArts I have only couple pics of
Adventurer-catalogsand not a lot of info on their releases.

From Sierra 1980-86 is quite blurry to me; only
know two catalogsfrom that period.

And which games include those early
catalogs?
And anyone have info or picture on 1992 Sierra
catalog(s)
(plus what games it comes with) ?

From SSI's starting year (1980?) to 1985 isn't
clear; especially 19??-1983.I also haven't seen these though I've seen the

1988 - SSI Spring 1989

I'd appreciate any info/pics.

5. Anyone has picture of blue white

6. Feel free to submit or point out to me where

highly appreciate this.Early/different screenshots are interesting too
(f.ex. I haveearly screenshots of f.ex. Indy 4 and The Dig which

Hey Jukka!

Welcome to the list!

4. Do you have knowledge on Sierracatalogs

I believe I have all of the Sierra catalogs,
I just havent put them up on my site yet.

- And which games include those early catalogs?

Most of the early On-Line Systems games included catalogs.

- And anyone have info or picture
on 1992 Sierra catalog(s)

The 1992 catalog has King Graham near a bridge to Dr. Brains
castle and a plane flying overhead.
It says Big $avings Inside in
the lower right hand corner. It
came with just about every game released toward the end of 1991 and most of
1992.

5. Anyone has picture of blue white Softporn?

I dont know of anyone that has this. I have spoken to a few ex-Sierra people
and none of them remember it. All
they know of is the Roberta/Hot-tub version. It is quite possible that it was just a
mock up made for that picture of games (featured in the 10th Anniversary
catalog). Only time will tell.

I hope that helps a little.
