RE: Chrome, was: Firefox Updated and Unable to Navigate
default browser or not. Just leave this alone if you do not want Chrome to be your default browser. Next Important heading: On Start up. Here is where you put in your URL that you want to show as soon as you start Chrome. There are three radio buttons to pick from, but I chose to open with a specific page or pages, which is the third radio button. Under this, you can type in the URL of the web site that you want to open when you start Chrome. Under this, there is a link where you can add more pages you want to show when Chrome starts up. Now, we are up to the search engin heading. This is a heading. There are headings on this settings page. I chose to use Google search engin in the address bar. This is a combo box. The next heading, is on start up. Finally, here is where you set up your home page. There are three radio buttons here. I chose the third one, to open a selected page or selected pages. Next, I was able to enter: www.Google.Com. That is my home page that will open each time I start Chrome. Next important group of settings, the advanced settings. Now, you have to press enter on the advanced settings button before more headings of settings will show. The Advanced settings are collapsed, so you have to press enter to show more headings of settings. Now that these advanced settings are open, we get to the next heading of settings. There is much more we can customize under the advanced settings. Privacy and security heading: Down arrow from here, and you hear: Use a web service to resolve navigation errors. You have a clickable, and a toggle. Press spacebar to toggle this on or off. Again, ignore the clickables. Now you have: Use a prodiction service to enable you in searches. I left this unchecked. Next, you have a setting to speed up the loading of web pages: I checked this with spacebar. The next three settings I just left alone. I checked the one that says: Use a web service to help with spelling. I leave manage certificates alone. Next, you have content settings, but this is not a new heading. We are still working with the same heading. The only thing of interest here, is the clear history button. This was available in the virtical menu, so don't worry about this. Now, we get to the next heading of settings. Passwords and forms: Under this heading, just make sure that you check to be able to have Chrome save passwords. Languages Heading: I did nothing with this. Downloads heading: This is where you choose where you want your downloads to be saved on your computer. Printing heading: I did nothing with this. Accessibility heading: I did nothing with this. Now, we have the System heading: Down arrow, and you hear: Continue running background apps, when Google Chrome is Closed. I have this unchecked. Next, Use hard ware excelloration when Available. I have this checked. Next, you hear: Open proxy settings button. I left this alone. Last Heading LOL! Reset. Here, you can reset all settings back to their origional. We are done with Settings. Now, just press CTRL+F4 to get back to the Freedom Scientific Web site. This settings web page, opens in another tab. That is it for settings. Notice, we made a lot of changes under the advanced settings. You cannot see these, unless you press enter to expand these. Now, press the Alt key again. Up arrow once to get to the end of the menu where we were with the settings. You see exit, up arrow and you see the help sub menu, right under the settings choice. I press right arrow on this help sub menu, and you can enter on the help center to get a lot of help using Chrome. To open a web site, just press CTRL+L or Alt+D and type the URL. Chrome for me, is so much quicker with web sites that involve streamming TV and Watching movies, and so on. For me, Chrome opens large news sites very quickly compared to IE. Lastly, All JAWS and NVDA navigation key commands work in Chrome. For example, you can press F7 to open a list of links with JAWS, and the elements list with NVDA. All of that is the exact same. This is the end of the tutorial. I've been using it since email first became available at my university back in the 70's I think it was. I still use it on my Windows 7 desktop and my Windows 10 tablet. It has taken some adjustments like forwrding email from my GMail account to another one that doesn't vheck certificates and getting used to the fact that the message headers aren't read correctly on my Windows 10 tablet. Re: history of window eyes
I might add that Malcolm, who worked as a ranger at Yosemite near Fresno where I lived at the time, initially called his PC screenreader Vocal-Eyes and I was one of the beneficiaries. He had originally designed it for a fellow ranger at Yosemite who was only partially sighted. I still see his name on the lists occasionally. Bill Grimm was then naming all his software releases Whatever-talk, so when Malcolm teamed up with Computer Aids, the program was renamed Screen Talk. When Doug Geoffrey took over Computer Aids, he named his screen reader Vocal-Eyes. Apparently Malcolm had no objection to that. Actually Doug wasn't even aware that the name had been used by Malcolm. Later GW Micro released Window-Eyes for Windows as, as you know, Vocal-Eyes was a DOS screen reader. Dave At 04:02 AM 10/17/2016, you wrote: I don't have time to write a very long message, but here's a little of the story. In the early 1980s Bill Grimm formed a company, Computer Aids Corporation, to create software for the Apple II family of computers. They teamed up with Malcolm Holser to create a screen reader for DOS called Screen-Talk, which was released in 1985, which I bought and used. In 1986 Screen-Talk was linked with ProKey, a macro program, and its functionality was extended. Somewhere in there, Doug Geoffray was hired as a programmer. In 1988 Computer Aids released the Sounding Board, an ISA-compatible speech synthesizer that used the SSI-263 speech chip that was common in those days. Dan Wyrick did major work on that project. Near that time Bill Grimm died. Dan and Doug put together a new company, GW Micro and marketed the new-generation DOS screen reader as Vocal-Eyes. The first Windows 3.0 screen reader was OutSpoken, released in the summer of 1992. Later came Automatic Screen Access for Windows and JAWS for Windows. Window-Eyes 1.0 came out quite late, in late 1995. It worked with Windows 3 and 3.1, even though Windows 95 was already out and had no screen reader support from anyone at first. Window-Eyes 2 was the first W-E version to support Windows 95, and came out in the spring of 1997, I think. The revision history of Window-Eyes is on the GW Micro website, going way back; it is instructive to read it to see where we have come from. Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up
Hi Doug, Indeed that seems to have solved the problem. I was almost sure I had tried that before, but perhaps I was just lured by the prior character after, which is what I had always used before. Thanks for taking me seriously and getting it resolved. Dave At 05:26 AM 3/10/2016, you wrote: Dave, As per my previous email where I said exactly what I set it to, you want to set it to "Character Before", not "Prior Character After" as you just stated you are doing. This means before handing the right arrow to the underlying application, first read the current Character. Then allow the right arrow to go through to actually move to the character to the right. Bottom line, this speaks the character you left, not the character you are moving to. So please change the right arrow to "Character Before" as I believe this will resolve your problem. I didn't verify but I do seem to remember that Prior character after isn't fully implemented with some applications. But that doesn't matter in your case as Character Before gives you the same thing but works. I didn't add a new key, I just changed the existing right arrow definition to read prior character after the right arrow command was executed. At least I think that's what I was doing as the labels on the various definitions have been changed somewhat. Hi Doug, That's three of you who can't find the problem, which makes me think it must either be me or my Windows 7 Pro installation. Two of you are using Windows 10, but I wouldn't expect that to make a difference. I also don't understand why, once I have made a change in the cursor key definition, I can't get back to the default directly. Could an app be interfering? Do you have any other ideas for what I could be doing wrong or what might be wrong with my installation? Dave At 12:30 PM 3/9/2016, you wrote: Dave, I am also not having a problem. Setting the right arrow to "character before" causes it to speak the character left instead of the character going to. Also, I went back in and had no problem changing my right arrow back to "character after" which is our default. Meaning I did not have to reload the factory sets. So Dave, I didn't have to go back to 8, my 9.4 works fine (smile). Either I'm not understanding the problem, or steps are being left out or maybe you are not setting up the keys properly. Hi Charlotte, We got home on Saturday. Barbara had a good time I think. We did dinner and bridge with Doug and Marlene yesterday as a birthday celebration and today, after our Medford Senior Center gig, seven of our band members joined us for a birthday dinner at Sizzlers. We havent been back to the German restaurant in Jacksonville since we were there with Adventurers. It sounds like it's time to give them another try. How did your biopsy turn out. We've been worrying about that. Let's get together soon. If used correctly, headings aid navigation and allow you to quickly jump from one important section to the next. The HTML header element, in contrast, is used as a container or grouping element for the repetitive content you normally find in the top section of all webpages on a given website. For example, the header usually contains the company logo, search box and top navigation links and these elements usually don't change when you move from page to page on a website. Most users try to find ways to skip past the header to find the unique content on the page. If you did want to navigate to a header, it should be presented as a Landmark on the page. At 09:08 AM 12/20/2015, you wrote: Hi, Folks. Has anyone been able to get Eudora to work properly in Windows 10, and if so, how? I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and left Eudora installed. Also, reinstalled the factory settings/Eudora set files, as the ones I had disappeared. Also maximized the child and parent windows (alt-hypen/x and alt-space/x) and still can't read the emails and navigate properly. Is there anything I need to do to get Eudora working again, or is this a lost cause? RE: Introducing Window-eyes 9.3
I got the same message about not being able to upgrade my installation of 9.2. I haven't tried to download again. Something ain't right! At 05:35 PM 12/16/2015, you wrote: I am having persistent frustrating trouble upgrading to 9.3. After finally completing the download and running the installer, I get two error dialogues: the first says that the installer cannot create a license; the second says that this copy of Window-eyes cannot be upgraded. I have since reinstalled 9.2.1, but the errors do not change. If I attempt to download a fresh copy of the upgrade, I receive the cryptic error: Áccess denied; contact AI Squared." I assume that I've attempted to download the upgrade too many times and that my online records need to be reset from AI Squared's side. But what about the upgrade's apparent inability to install over my copy of Window-eyes? The check for update dialogue reports the correct version, my two remaining SMA counts and the option to download 9.3. So, the installer is obviously checking and not finding information about my installation that Window-eyes actually contains. Bottom line, how can I resolve this and begin enjoying 9.3? Re: Problems with Eudora
If you are using GMail, they made a change that causes this message from your Eudora. Some have said there is a setting you can change to make Eudora work with GMail again, but I have not managed to find it. Hi Larry, It sounds like some other software is preempting those controls. Ever since GW Micro rewrote Browse mode, if you press a key before a page is loaded and your synthesizer stops reading it, the keystroke is taken as a silence key. The second press works. RE: eudora, attention dave
Hi Chris, I have tried this several times, but without success. I defined the highlight key to alt-shift-H as you did, then closed the control panel and opened a new message in Eudora. I entered the same text as you and moved the cursor to the middle of the text. I then used the numpad insert plus to route the mouse to the curser. Next I moved the cursor to the beginning of the text using home and then to the end of the text using shift end. Then I pressed my new hot key, alt-shift-H and got only a beep--no announcement that the highlight color was set. Either I am making a misstep or you left out a step. Do you have a suggestion? RE: Right Arrow Problem in WE 9.1
Hi Lou, If I press the home key to move to the beginning of the line where the word tes is located, the cursor will be on the first t in tes. If I then press right arrow, the cursor moves to the e and reads t, which is the prior key after the cursor has moved. At least that is how it has always been. In WE 9.1 the computer beeps on the first press of right arrow and reads the t on the second press of right arrow. At that point the cursor is on the e in test as it should be. In other words, the first press of right arrow does nothing. At 11:46 PM 3/5/2015, you wrote: My right arrow cursoring key is set to character after and it works as I would expect. So if I were going to read the word car letter by letter, WE would say space when the cursor passed the letter C, the letter c when the cursor passed the letter a, and the letter r when the cursor passed the space after the letter r.
