[talk-ph] Fwd: [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha
NOTE: Not for general consumption yet. Not for newbies--use the original Potlatch for that. Please report bugs to the Wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potlatch_2 -- Forwarded message -- From: Richard Fairhurst rich...@systemed.net Date: Sat, Jul 10, 2010 at 9:57 AM Subject: [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha To: t...@openstreetmap.org Hi all, (Deep breath) I'm delighted to unveil a test version of Potlatch 2, the all-new, completely rewritten version of OpenStreetMap's online editor. You can play with it at http://www.geowiki.com/ . It talks to the main OSM server and you can make real edits with it. This is a public alpha. This means it's an early version of the software and there are lots of bugs in it. Performance leaves a whole lot to be desired. It _will_ eat your memory, and it may freeze up or crash. Presets for ways don't generally have icons - either that or they're a bit sketchy. There's no documentation. It's an experimental release for people who already have experience using Potlatch and know what they're doing. It's not for newbies - yet! But here's some of the cool stuff it does: - super friendly tagging system - WYSIWYG map display with names on roads and the like - powerful editing tools like 'make right-angled', 'create parallel line' and so on - vector backgrounds so you can manually bring in .osm files, shapefiles and so on - dedicated turn restriction and route editors - really good relations support It's not just a general-purpose editor: you can use it to create your own editor with your favourite presets, icons, backgrounds and rendering. Everything is in easily configurable files, and it talks OAuth so people can log into the OSM server securely from outside. We hope that people will use it to build cycle-specific editors, public transport editors, fix unnamed roads editors... all of that. It's a foundation for people to do more cool stuff with OSM. Potlatch 2 has only been possible thanks to the contributions, in particular, of Dave Stubbs and Andy Allan. Dave has built a terrific architecture for the program in general, way beyond anything I could ever think up, and in particular for the tagging system. Andy has given it a relation editor so much more powerful than P1 ever had, niggled away at a zillion little bugs, and given the project the impetus it needed. Lots of other people have helped as well: Twain47 (Mr Nominatim) contributed some excellent icons, Matt wrote the superb quadrilateralise function, Shaun added Big Concrete Blocks et al to the presets, and loads of others have helped. I'm delighted to only be one of the cast and think it augurs really well for the future. So what now? You _will_ find a really obvious bug about five seconds into using it. I guarantee it. Please use the wiki pages to report it: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potlatch_2 . There's three pages for filing bugs so we can prioritise which to fix first. It's all open source (obviously) in a proper language (ActionScript 3) with a real framework (Flex) and an open source compiler (Flex Open Source SDK). If you would like to get involved with coding it: \o/, woo and yay. If you'd like just to improve the presets and the stylesheets, \o/ woo and yay too - you don't need to program for that. We have a mailing list, potlatch-dev (http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/potlatch-dev) to talk about development of whatever stripe. And the stylesheet language, MapCSS, is racing on - but more of that anon. Hope you enjoy it. Look forward to the feedback. cheers Richard ___ talk mailing list t...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk -- http://vaes9.codedgraphic.com ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[talk-ph] Coastlines side question: Do we replace place=island nodes with place=island coastline ways?
Hello guys, Here's a question. Some thousands of place=island nodes were imported from the GNS database. Should we replace/delete these nodes on favor of the coastline ways? The OSM Wiki says that place=island can be applied to either a node or a way. And since I've been replacing POI nodes and amenity=* nodes with an outline (either landuse=* or building=yes) if the outline is traceable, I think that I should do the same for islands, at least for those place=island nodes that obviously correspond to a coastline way. In addition, the Good practices page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice on the OSM Wiki says One feature, one OSM-object. Thus island nodes should be replaced with island coastline ways. If the island is large, use a multipolygon relation to group the complete set of coastlines. If we agree to delete the nodes, what do we do with the GNS tags? Move them to the ways? Delete them altogether? What do you guys think? If you go back to my original post you will clearly see links I've referenced that pose much more liberal attribution requirements; and I use the word requirement somewhat jokingly. The information on the various OSM sites don't really provide clear guidance. Some portions say you don't have to attribute on the map itself and instead you can attribute in an acknowledgments section. Other OSM sites state that if you use OSM data in a TV broadcast that you do not even have to attribute on-air at all (which I find incredible); in those instances you can simply attribute on the affiliated web site. You'll have to forgive me for my confusion, but I didn't create this mess. Now, perhaps I'm misreading this stuff. Anyone with access to google can see what I'm referring to. Re: [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha
Richard Fairhurst wrote: Hi all, (Deep breath) I'm delighted to unveil a test version of Potlatch 2, the all-new, completely rewritten version of OpenStreetMap's online editor. Great. Thanks for that. One thing I can't find is GPX tracks (key: G). Has it not been implemented yet or am I going blind? And add some note to your terms of use, that it is not allowed to remove this. Inform your customers about the CC-BY-SA license and that this license requires them to name the openstreetmap.org project as real owner of the data. Yours Manuel I realize what I could do in way of watermarking, forcing a logo in a portion of the map and so forth. What I'm trying to determine is what is required by the OSM license. If my understanding is correct, OSM uses Creative Commons 2.0; CC 2.0 states: Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). So, what's required? As I stated in my original post, there is confusion (at least on my part) as to my obligation. Some examples state attributing OSM in the acknowledgments section of my application is sufficient. Other examples on the OSM license site state a website attribution is all that's required. I think a logo on-air would suffice. Maybe. Is the exact requirement stated in clear un-ambiguous terms anywhere? My clients have no desire to tell their viewers that OSM data is their data. They don't care that much about mapping to try and misrepresent the source of the data. Doesn't work that way in broadcast TV. These maps are used so briefly on-air. I will most certainly not mis-represent. As I stated, I will place OSM attribution in my app in the acknowledgments section. I will also pace OSM attribution on my website (the marketing/sales portion of the site not a OSM web app.) What's required of my customers? I'm hoping that if I attribute on my website and in my app that will be enough. Some broadcasters are hesitant of using attribution. So much so as to flat out not use product requiring attribution. For example, some NBC affiliates won't use Google Earth due to the attribution requirements. That's why there are still mapping companies like Curious Maps. Some of these guys would rather pay than risk attributing an unknown product. If you move the map to the north, the numbers do not change. If you zoom out and zoom in (pressing - and + on the zoombar to the right), the scale changes to 210 km, then to 71 km. If you then move to the equator, the scale stays at 71 km, and again changes to 210 when you zoom out and 71 when you zoom in. That, to me, constitutes no change. And it is incorrect. Coincidentally, the 71 km bar is equal in length to the length of the north border of Equatorial Guinee. Getting the coordinates from OSM I get the coast at 9.7755 degrees east and the east border on 11.3434 east. That's 1.5679 degrees, and with 360 degrees around the globe and 40.008 km at the equator (we're talking 2 degrees north here), that border is just short of 175 km, which is nowhere near the 71 km that the scale bar would suggest. The result is highly detailed digital maps, created and edited by local communities, that are free to reproduce without the normal commercial restrictions. It's a fun project to get involved with; you'll discover how maps are made and uncover the geographical secrets of your neighbourhood. Volunteers from all around Brisbane have already begun mapping the roads, footpaths and cycleways across the city, but now we need your help to improve our map by adding street details and amenities such as restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops. For July, we will be mapping Bribie Island. After beginning with a delicious BBQ breakfast at Quota Park, we will split up and spread out over Bribie Island to collect information for inclusion in OpenStreetMap. You are welcome to map however and wherever you want, but here are a few suggestions for things that other mappers like to collect: * Missing streets, footpaths and cycleways * Missing street names * Missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, etc.) * Missing reserves, parks, schools and child-care centres * Missing amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats, shelters, etc.) * Details of shops/restaurants/pubs However, if you aren't sure what you can do, we'll be happy to provide ideas and help get you started. If you have a GPS device, including a GPS-enabled phone, bring it along, but you don’t need anything special to map - just a pen and paper will do. Blank maps for note-taking can easily be made available if prior notice is provided. After spending a couple of hours surveying we will rejoin at the Bribie Island Hotel at 13:00 for lunch and to debrief. If you have a laptop, bring it along and we'll show you how easy it is to use OpenStreetMap on your own computer. Internet access will be made available through shared mobile broadband (or bring your own). If you can’t or don’t feel like helping in the physical survey, or you just want to be social, please feel free to turn up at the Bribie Island Hotel anyway. We’ll be there between 13:00 and 14:00 and we’ll be happy to introduce you to OpenStreetMap, and maybe get you set up to map your local area.
Salut Sur mon patelin j'ai 2 châteaux d'eau.
