Ideen? I hope this can be done, too, if it makes it easier to be much more responsive about making the renderer respect best UK tagging practice. One of the reasons, IMO, that its difficult to prevent people tagging for the renderer, is that there currently seems to be little attempt, when a tagging scheme is devised, to consider whether and how the results of such tagging should be made visible on the map, and then to get any necessary renderer changes implemented. -- Cheers, John ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

[OSM-talk-fr] name=Boulangerie
[Talk-us] Am I mapping this wrong, or should the router be fixed for this?
I've been normally mapping slip lanes as '_link' highways at intersections since the beginning. However, as most fellow US mappers know, they almost never have 'speed limits' posted for them, and that seems to help cause problems in some routing programs when they give those slip lanes a speed limit higher than the main highway. Anyways, I've been using OSMAnd recently for occasional offline routing on my tablet and have come across weird routing (I'd like to call them 'bugs') at some intersections that have 3+ traffic lights nodes at them because of the roads being divided. Here, OSMAnd routes me onto a slip lane, makes a U-Turn on the side road, and then continues the across the main road to accomplish what a simple 'left turn' could have done [1], all to avoid '1' traffic light node. So, I go report the 'bug' on the OSMAnd Google group [2], and then somebody forwards it to the GitHub site [3]. In the response I get back on GitHub, one of the maintainers of OSMAnd says it's a 'map data' issue and closes it. Claims that in the 'maneuver', since it avoids an extra traffic light node, it's the shortest route, even though it does that funky U-Turn. Say what?! I mean, honestly, if both MapQuest Open OSMR can do that left turn 'normally' without needing to make a funky U-Turn, something has to be wrong in OSMAnd, right?? Sure, there isn't a 'NO U-Turn' sign posted for this maneuver, but still, the routing engine shouldn't be suggesting it since there isn't a 'NO Left Turn' relation there preventing the left turn from McKnight SB to Siebert EB. So, that leads me to my question. Does anybody think I've tagged the intersection incorrectly? This is how I've been tagging intersections like this from since the start, and I know most other US mappers have been doing the same. Or should I start adding 'false' U-Turn restrictions to prevent the routing bugs and then be called out as 'tagging for the router', or even maybe start putting traffic light nodes at the stop lines for intersections that have both roads divided (and just leave simple one-node intersections as-is)? I'm very curious to see what others have to say about this to see how I'll move forward when I map in the future. Also, don't hesitate to respond at the Google Group post or the GitHub one too as I get the e-mail notifications from them as well. -James [1] - (MapQuest routing, OSMAnd suggestion in [2] link) - https://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=mapquest_carroute=40.53204%2C-80.01073%3B40.53002%2C-80.00614 [2] - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/XJ-HVOHhKEM [3] - https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/issues/1501 ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Re: [OSM-legal-talk] Legal requirements of permissions to import into OSM
Having spent a lot of time doing work like this at the Sunlight Foundation, I will suggest keeping things as simple as they can be, as Simon suggests. Efforts like opendatacommons.org are admirable, but for an overwhelmed or disengaged government, they still offer more detail than is desirable. ODC also promotes the ODbL, which others on this thread have argued may be undesirable. I would suggest: 1. ask for a public domain dedication 2. if they balk at this, as for a letter giving OSM permission as described earlier in the thread 3. if they balk at this, ask for an attribution license, most likely a pre-4.0 version of CC-BY It's usually best to avoid presenting options that are not yet necessary, particularly ones that you don't believe to be the most desirable outcome. Tom I wonder if pointing the local governments to http://opendatacommons.org/ might be a good start. I've been considering providing some cities I've contact with a link to Open Data Commons to help them make the right decision. Re: [Talk-us] Am I mapping this wrong, or should the router be fixed for this?
In reality there is only one set of stop lights there, correct? In other words, if one were headed south on McKnight Road turning east on Seibert, one would not have to stop (assuming red lights) three different times. 1) A routing engine should have some heuristics to interpret the three (in this case) nodes tagged highway=traffic_signals as one. 2) There should be some cost in a routing engine for making a u-turn so as to discourage such routes even if there was an extra set of signals. Making a u-turn does take time (one can not go from the posted speed limit in one direction to the posted speed limit in the other direction instantly). The presence of other traffic in the opposing directly would add further to the time needed to make a u-turn as one would have to wait for an opening. I’ve largely fixed the routing via _link ways by changing routing.xml for my personal use. My changes delete all their odd penalty logic when changing from one class of highway to another and simply set a reasonable default assumed speed for ways without maxspeed tagging. Basically, I set the maxspeed assumptions to be that for my state and then set the _link speeds to 1/2 that of the associated highway class. That fix has been mentioned by several posters on the OSMand discussion area and has been routinely ignored over several OSMand releases. So my opinion is that you are mapping correctly (as evidenced by other routing engines giving reasonable results) and that the OSMand team is getting confused about how to actually fix the routing issues that are routinely being posted on their Google Group area. In the case of Openstreetmap (and of Google), this is 1 entity which have several servers. In the case of Overpass API, these are different parties running (possibly different versions) of the same software. They may have different policies for updating the data or for the region they deliver services for. For software/services where this doesn't matter, it's still possible to try and use the servers with a fallback system. If one doesn't answer, try another.
-James [1] - (MapQuest routing, OSMAnd suggestion in [2] link) - https://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=mapquest_carroute=40.53204%2C-80.01073%3B40.53002%2C-80.00614 [1] [2] - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/XJ-HVOHhKEM [3] - https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/issues/1501 It is a routing problem. No sane person would take that road and it should be possible to make an algorithm that does not take that road, even with the speed limit missing. OSRM is flawed the same way in that it will blindly take a highway offramp and onramp because it is a few metres shorter, like in example [4].
Although a height difference between in and out might indicate a weir or other obstruction may well indicate that a route is non-navigable? The outflow from a dam may have the same name, but have no use as a through route? This is more about the water flow than about being navigable by a ship. I assumed that when the wiki spoke about routable it was referring to the water flow rather than boat/ship/barge traffic. In any event, a routing engine for boats could use the presence of a dam or weir (combined with the absence of a lock) to deduce that ship navigation was not possible. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] waterway - routable network and reservoirs/lakes
On 27/07/15 20:55, Mike Thompson wrote: I assumed that when the wiki spoke about routable it was referring to the water flow rather than boat/ship/barge traffic. In any event, a routing engine for boats could use the presence of a dam or weir (combined with the absence of a lock) to deduce that ship navigation was not possible. 'This way used should point in the direction of water flow' is only applicable to non-tidal flows, and reservoirs may well control water flow in a way that makes a 'water flow map' somewhat difficult to deduce. The use of 'routable network' is rather ambiguous, but this is little different to the problem of routing through other land based open areas where several waterway features link into an area of open water. The jury is still out on putting in all the paths through the area, but if there is a navigable route designated through a water body it should be drawn, but an imaginary link just showing water flow should not be necessary? Any routing process should be able to deduce the relation, there is no need to draw it. -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

-James I use OSMand for a couple of reasons, but I am really beginning to think that the developers are confused with their routing logic and assumptions. Re: [Talk-GB] UK style rendering port ...
Completely agree with Richard, New rendering styles are a chance to start afresh with the technologies perspectives from 10 (or 11) years worth of experience. This does not just mean vector tiles (although my feeling is these are still 'bleeding-edge'), but also potentially more use of LUA and/or more complex database-side post-processing: this is particularly true when considering rendering a smaller area such as Britain Ireland., where the constraints of database update are less overwhelming. There are plenty of trivial things which can be done now with a new render which are harder for existing styles: such as making use of the hstore column. A much tougher thing to try would be to find a way to include more of the mapping community in establishing what is wanted: not just vociferous voices on the mailing list github, nor the bias inherent in a 'do-ocracy'. We're much more likely to get a coherent, UK-friendly style by thinking about it from first principles than by adapting osm-carto with its eight-year heritage (and all the attendant compromises). Second, let's not start with raster rendering. Let's build this as a vector tileset from the start, with in-browser/on-device rendering. Vectors have lighter infrastructure needs, and enable clickable POIs and on-the-fly restyling. The UK is small enough that we could just run it through tilemaker (https://github.com/systemed/tilemaker) without the need for a complex stack. The two disadvantages are that the very oldest browsers will struggle, and that (for now) minutely updates don't happen unless you build that complex stack - but that's fine, we still have osm-carto for instant feedback. Let's build tomorrow's map, not yesterday's; and who knows, maybe osm-carto might want to borrow from some of our advances in months to come!
(本当は標準タイル的にはhighway=serviceを充てたい! centree - Original Message - From: 浅野和仁 helicobacter_y...@hera.eonet.ne.jp To: OpenStreetMap Japanese talk talk-ja@openstreetmap.org Date: 2015/7/26, Sun 00:39 Subject: Re: [OSM-ja] Talk-ja まとめ読み, 89 巻, 9 号 浅野です。 -- **浅野 和仁 090-2067-9293 helicobacter_y...@hera.eonet.ne.jp(メインメール) 586-0077 河内長野市南花台四丁目7-5 ** ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

[Talk-GB] UK style rendering port ...
With the discussion on a more self contained 'UK' group I'd like to highlight one area that is becoming perhaps more urgent for some of us, the idea of a UK style tile set. With the current push to make the default mapping more 'google like', retaining the UK colour coding for roads is something I feel many of us wish to retain, but there is no need to force that on the rest of the world. While I've not actually looked, and it's not easy to find them, I have seen links to other 'local' styles and this is exactly what OSM is about. Some aspects of the proposed changes do make sense, but I feel that comparisons with google are a little unfair since google still does not nearly as much low level detail anyway. A single style is never going to be ideal, and so I'm actually thinking that two or three base tile sets actually makes a lot more sense. Keeping the UK road colours is the obvious starting point, The other area that I am looking to roll back is some of the agresive changes to town centres. I'm still getting complaints about where names now appear on shops, or rather on adjacent shops and tidying this up probably applies world wide, but the much more abstract layout of buildings in many UK towns does not lend itself to a style that assumes a more geometric layout. Finally landmarks such as some of the viaducts and other now 'retasked' structures which are perhaps more prevalent in the UK are an area where a more local treatment may be more appropriate? That the world map is going to evolve on a more generic basis is a given so I feel now is the time to be looking at a more local alternative. At one time I did have my own tile server and OSRM routing service running but it needs more resources than I can put up on my own to be more generally available. I have space on a site with a large pipe, but I would prefer to see perhaps a more distributed model where several sites mirror the same tile set and hopefully historic overlays ... another area that needs a little more locally based support. -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
