Nice work ianhaylock! I downloaded the file and my PC crawled! I like the addition of large/wide rivers in the data and I am in favor for importing them (but, that's just me). Still, I'm a bit scared if we bork something at this time, especially when davao is preparing for a mapping party. Definitely, the coastline render will be a bit messy when the import starts. Re: [talk-ph] More OSMPH goodness?
The thing is, OSM seems to be just one of their sources of data. Looking at their Visayas screenshots, their road network is much more extensive than what is available in OSM. I think we should contact them and ask where they got their other data (to see if we can also get it for OSM if it's good enough). But what I find troubling is that they seem to think that the OSM data is CC-BY only, when it is actually CC-BY-SA (currently). See the copyright section: http://www.car-navi.ph/?page_id=14 Yep, I already communicated this to car-navi.ph many moons ago. They admitted that they use osm data before (I'm not sure if they still do). I even flagged their attention to the copyright notice which used to be All rights reserved if I remember it right. I'll dig up the mails to check Secondly, check out this a-bit-recent blog post by Mike Hamlin of TeamAsia (http://oaxserver.com/computerworld/gps-update/ ). It seems to contain a nice summary of the state-of-the-art of GPS navigation in the Philippines. In it, he mentions maning's Garmin GPS routable Philippines map (among others, like Jan's data). What I find surprising is that TeamAsia handles the PR events of Google here in the Philippines. In fact, Mike Hamlin gave a short talk during the Google Map Maker Party that I attended recently so I was surprised that he's already aware of OpenStreetMap. :-) He talked about touch cruise: On the Touch Cruise, Google Maps functions just like a Garmin or AVT800 GPS. It provides directions from point-to-point, tracks progress towards a designated destination, and provides voice guidance on the way. And with such coincidence. here's what I got from a recent OSM-PH Garmin user, this morning: I contributed a number of places to Google Mapmaker, but this would not be useful as they export user edits to their Google Maps Software, before we can use their data on the road, we need to pay for an unlimited mobile internet on the road to update data of Google Maps Mobile. http://esambale.wikispaces.com/message/view/home/12433323 Seeing your efforts I will be repeating my work from Google Mapmaker to Open Street Map and keep you posted when my jobs are done. The problem about doing this is that like the other similar initiatives that have been tried before (couriers in London for example), it doesn't actually advance things that much because it doesn't gather the crucial street name and number information. Re: [OSM-talk] putting GPS units in taxis
Hi All, Another option is not having the GPRS and just dump the GPX data once you get back the device. +1 That would be my personal recommendation. I once made a small research on the availability of GPRS enabled devices (out f personal interest) and came to the conclusion that they tend to be very expensive for what they do. We write fleet management and tracking software, so have tested many units. The cost is coming down, both for hardware and the GPRS data transfer costs. The cheapest packages out there at the moment cost around £400 over a three year period (includes hardware, data transfer, software etc). Compared to a cheap GPS data logger, this will look expensive! But for businesses who want to improve efficiency, save fuel, help logistics etc., it is certainly worth it. Even the fastest trackers can only send data every 3 seconds, Any faster and an intermittent GPRS signal can cause a backlog, which falls short of the every 1 second suggested for osm data. Even then the data sent often does not have all the meta data attached (e.g. HDOP etc) which a gpx file or other formats may have and could potentially be useful to osm. Re: [OSM-talk] Tagging hazardous routes
When the A3 bypass[0] was constructed the route crossed several existing rights of way. Rather than building bridges or underpasses it appears that the planners struck on the novel idea of asking pedestrians to walk across four lanes of heavy traffic moving at 70-80 mph. I'd like to include these paths in OSM[1] as they do exist on the ground but would like to tag them in such a way that their use is discouraged (e.g. higher cost in routing, warning signs on walking maps). Has anyone mapped something similar? I know precisely where you mean, I tried mapping some of them on the East Hants party some 18 months ago. useless=yes? ;-) As an aside: it has to be said that this is a particularly annoying case as said paths formerly were part of a direct link from Petersfield to Butser Hill. Re: [OSM-talk] putting GPS units in taxis
That would be my personal recommendation. I once made a small research on the availability of GPRS enabled devices (out f personal interest) and came to the conclusion that they tend to be very expensive for what they do. So I would suggest: Buy some good quality gpx trackers, that allow for programming that swiches tracking of, if the device doesn't move (so if the taxi sits in the parking lot for a night, it doesn't collect loads of random points) and has a good battery life. Then just get the tracks every couple of days. I was thinking more of a device that can be installed in some sort of roaming vehicle (taxi, courier, tuktuk) and left for a year or two to collect data and send it in without intervention. I imagined something along the lines of one of the older Windows Mobile devices made by HTC (with GPRS and Wifi), connected to a GPS with an antenna, and hooked up to the car battery either via the cigarette lighter or (more intrusively) wired in especially. Some of the older HTC devices are only about £60 these days - and can have Linux installed, which would be significantly more stable and more predictable than WM, and could be pre-configured to detect and connect to known wifi hotspots, such as those at Petrol stations. A subscription to these (e.g. via Boingo.com) is very cheap. The software could have a threshold, whereby after a period of no Wifi connectivity (say more than X mb of GPX trails stored), it can upload via GPRS instead. Many pay-as-you-go SIM cards in places like Thailand have an 'unlimited internet for one day' option which would be well-suited to this type of burst upload. I guess all you'd need on top of that is something that detects the charge state of the device and saves and powers down if the charge is off for more than 10 minutes (since many taxis in places like Bangkok switch off their engines at traffic lights). On the social-engineering side, I imagine having a local Thai explain what it was for, and offer something like 500THB (£10) a month would be more than enough incentive to leave the thing running ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Rather than building bridges or underpasses it appears that the planners struck on the novel idea of asking pedestrians to walk across four lanes of heavy traffic moving at 70-80 mph. I've seen a number of places when driving where there are warning signs about pedestrians; since mapping I notice more things when driving and usually this corresponds with a footpath crossing the dual carriageway (I'm thinking A120/A12/A14 which is a route I've driven quite a bit). Usually the bit where they are to cross is evidenced by the crash barriers between the carriageways suddenly being two barriers with a gap between them, so effectively there is a footpath between the two barriers. I'd be tempted just to draw the ways on, stick maxspeed tags on the A3, and hope that whichever routing engine you have in mind can put a penalty on paths that cross roads with high maxspeeds and no light controlled crossing on the node(s). An arcade usually cuts through a block, rather than running alongside a road. I'd have said colonnade was about right, though they're not exactly common in the UK (the two level shops at Chester spring to mind, but they are probably peculiar to themselves). We do have what can best be described as concrete awnings, eg in Birmingham, but they are stricly functional, and probably best described as something like covered=yes. [OSM-talk] Move the Map
Hi all, there has been a quite lively debate on talk-de about the appearance of the openstreetmap.org page to newcomers to the project, speaking people who heard of it for the first time and come around to see if they (and how) they will be able to use it for their goals (note: not all of them might want to participate in mapping). Several people made some suggestions and I would like to get your take on those: Move the map It was argued that the map itself does not provide enough eye candy and usability (ability to draw on it, etc.) for first time visitors. Others argued (and I support that) that neat functions (routing, drawing, etc) are not the goal of openstreetmap.org. OSM exists to provide the data, not the services. But then, why give the map a such dominant position? The suggestion has been made to move the map (or make it less dominant), and instead offer a set of high profile real life OSM applications (OpenCycleMap, OpenRouteService, Cloudmade, etc.) Greetings, Peter PS: I didn't participate in the discussion myself, but I think it touches some important points which can not be changed without the consensus of not only the German community. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Richard Mann wrote: An arcade usually cuts through a block, rather than running alongside a road. I'd probably go for footway=colonnade Richard Hello, I don't think colonnade would fit what we need here. The arcades are always closed on one side and in ancient Greece, the closed side had shops in it, which is usually not the case with colonnades at all. The example given is pretty good, and it is relatively common in some parts of France. Orleans and Tours would be an other example of what this architecture is all about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_(architecture) However, the articles on wikipedia are pretty poor. I suspect that footway=arcade would actually be the best description if I remember correctly the definition. yes, I agree for the example in the picture, but be careful: if the way is not covered/formed by arches or vaults (round), it is not an arcade (e.g. ancient Greek stoa). I agree that it has a different meaning in different part of the world. In my hometown you can see the arcades look like this: http://kamizole.blog.lemonde.fr/files/royale11.jpg It is also the case in Tours in France, in the center. As someone mentioned before, the arcade seems to be in use in Italy too. Re: [OSM-talk] Tagging hazardous routes
I'd be tempted just to draw the ways on, stick maxspeed tags on the A3, and hope that whichever routing engine you have in mind can put a penalty on paths that cross roads with high maxspeeds and no light controlled crossing on the node(s). I'm definitely new to the OSM scene, but this sounds like a reasonable solution. Couple it with dangerous:yes, hazardous:yes, (cursory looks on tagwatch and OSMdoc reveal neither of these are in much use) potentially_may_be_squashed_to_resemble_a_crepe:yes or something similar (though that last one is too specific). I think a potentially unsafe key would be good--whatever it is called--because it could also be used for unsafe hiking routes, river fords, logging roads, alleys in the bad part of town, all floodways, air strips, swimming holes, all bomb ranges, etc. search something from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:crossing or discuss a new value there ;-) Having crossing=dangerous or similar would also work, but would be less universally usable (roads, paths, rivers and.. lava flows?) [OSM-talk] Removing gps-tracks
Correct me if I'm wrong, but now there aren't any ways of deleting gps-tracks committed to OSM, right? This I find somewhat troublesome. There are sometimes roads that are removed or changed in some way. Close to where I live, there are 2 building sites where they remove roads, and 1 motorway where they move roads to fit the motorway. This leaves the old gps-tracks leading to confusion and possibly error some roads. Are there any idea to make a way to delete these tracks? De dag dat het niet meer verplicht is om bij de Kvk ingeschreven te staan of de dag dat er een door de overheid geaccepteerd initiatief komt ben ik meteen weg bij die club. [talk-au] Roads that follow ABS suburb boundaries
Greetings Talk-Au, Tonight I tried to enter tertiary roads based on a GPX track I took on a drive from Newcastle to Clarence Town some months back and came to a point where one of the roads follows an ABS suburb boundary. I'm wondering what the best way to handle this is. The GPX track and the ABS boundary agree to within 3m at most points, so it's safe to say that the ABS data accurately traces the center of the road in question. Is it best to draw a 2nd way to represent the way, or some how break up the ABS boundary? So far I've just drawn in the road where the ABS boundary turns away from it. The GPX track in question is here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Biogenesis_/traces/413716 The area of the map in question is here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-32.6009lon=151.8143zoom=14layers=B000FTF You'll need to zoom in to see the Data layer to observe my changes before the rendering updates, but the road goes from Clarence Town and runs East to the Buckets way. [talk-au] How to map out streets the most efficently
In my up an coming trip to SE QLD, I'm probably going to go through a number of largish, relatively speaking, regional towns that aren't mapped out except for a handful of streets and most if not all were from landsat imagery. Now does anyone have suggestions on how to basically drive the entire town the most efficiently with the minimal amount of overlap, or how does one plan such a feat. Towns I'm hoping to map, given enough time, include: Moree: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-29.46771lon=149.83826zoom=14 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=moreez=14 Goondiwindi: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-28.5381lon=150.3039zoom=14 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=goondiwindiz=14 Millmerran: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-27.8779lon=151.2712zoom=14 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=millmerranz=14 Pittsworth (which wasn't even marked till this evening at all): http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-27.71lon=151.6359zoom=14 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=pittsworthz=14 Oakey: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-27.43068lon=151.71903zoom=14 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=oakeyz=14 Going the most direct way through these towns will be over 700km, normally the trip is closer to about 600km, and that figure doesn't include the extra milage doing streets. I have a bit of a time constraint as I'd prefer not to be driving after dark and bumping heads with the odd roo :) When I mapped out Inverell I was a little less prepared/experienced but even so it still took about 3hrs of driving to nail all the streets, which if I do even half the time in most towns I'm looking at a pretty hefty amount of time in the day just mapping. Is there any cheats people could suggest to speed up the process, even if the data collected isn't perfect but would allow for any blank spots to be extrapolated to fill in the rest of the picture? If I set off at first light, I'll have about 10 hours of daylight and need to travel 700km, although the closer I am to my destination by night fall the smaller the animal I'm likely to hit. Just to give you an idea, out round Goondiwindi I've seen 6' roos. Unfortunately none of the roads I'm taking are signed at anything higher than 100km/hr, so I can't make up time that way, and yes there is highway patrols along at least half the roads, if not most. If there is a remote chance of extra time the other towns I'm going through are Nanango, Goomeri and Kilkivan, all of which have pretty poor mapping as well, but are smaller than the towns I've out lined above.
