This reminds me of the great map atlas by Conklin the Ethnographic Atlas of Ifugao, where his team practically mapped individual rice paddies! Re: [Talk-tr] Mapping battle site Canakkale (Gallipoli), Turkey [name tag]
Hi, Firstly The good news! I think I've found a copyright expired source for Turkish names - published 1921, pdf here https://ia600202.us.archive.org/3/items/newzealandersatg00waituoft/newzealandersatg00waituoft.pdf An NZ view. Humm I should inform the NZ talk group too ... Question. Who is the map for? I'd think this is a mix of languages - mostly Turks and English speakers. Both would want to relate it to their knowledge, and that knowledge would be (mostly) of the language used by that individual. Context - Site + Mapping The OSM map should reflect the area - and that has been in part dedicated to the conflict in this area. I think this comes about due to the lack of use before the conflict and the amount of importance both political and from the common people of this site. So battlefield history maybe worth mapping here due to its present and foreseeable future use? I don't know, I've put up one that I regard as battlefield history - an area of criss crossed Turkish trenches that might still be identifiable. I await Turkish feed back on it. I may not have it quite the correct location - I'm working off hand drawn maps. Labelling - language. Firstly These are valleys, ridges and gullies. Not something with a street sign. So the 'general principles' while a good guide but were worked out for streets, where someone else has already provided a solution. But I'd take them as a guide. Some things are refered to by the original names .. they must have been available before the conflict and used, so no conflict there! Secondly I'd think these things would not be significant under normal circumstances. But they are now to some. To most they are places they have read about or seen in a film. Some have been named after the men who fought there. Some have been named for there features or their use at the time. E.G. 'Gun Ridge' so called by the ANZACs as that is where the Turks had their guns. As the fighting lines changed little of the conflict period .. I'm thinking of using the names used by the troops at their locations. As most visitors will primary be interested in their own troops areas that should serve them well. By placing the ' / ' separator between any two language names both sides can use the information - and the more frequently used one would be first? On 9/01/2014 12:06 PM, Paul Norman wrote: As might be expected, I've been involved in settling tagging in a few disputed areas, so I've got some experience with differing names. A few general principles apply - name=* is for the name of the object, as indicated on the ground. If there's no sign on the ground, you'd fall back to the name in the language spoken there. This would probably be Turkish, but if all the sites are only labelled in English for some reason, that's what the name tag should reflect - name:xx=* is for the name of the object, in the language xx. It is not for the name of the object translated into xx, although that may often end up being the same. As an example, my neighborhood has an English name. You could translate that name into German (or another language) but it would be wrong to put it in name:de, as it's not the name of the neighborhood. - You should avoid adding features which do not currently exist, e.g. the sites of historical battles. OSM is not well suited for that. For that kind of use you want to make an overlay, using OSM or another map as the base map. ___ Talk-tr mailing list Talk-tr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-tr ___ Talk-tr mailing list Talk-tr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-tr

Re: [Talk-br] Ruas residenciais em subúrbios: residential ou living_street?
Pois é, mas no mesmo artigo diz: In an urban context, unclassified roads may be more likely to have pavements (sidewalks) and be fit for two-way traffic than in rural areas in the same region. They are commonly found in industrial, retail, or commercial areas, or linking to residential neighbourhoods. Pela descrição no wiki, se encaixa perfeitamente para essas ruas mais estreitas: *Unclassified* is used for minor public roads typically at the lowest level of the interconnecting grid network. Unclassified roads have lower importance in the road network than tertiary roads, and are not residential streets or agricultural tracks. Unclassified roads are considered usable by motor cars. They might be distinguishable from tertiary roads in the same geographical region by their: - Being *narrower*, perhaps requiring you to drive slower; - Having a *lower speed limit* than the tertiary roads; - *Lack* of any visible classification; or, - *Lower* classifications, for countries which classify both and where the official classifications drive OSM tagging. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dunclassified Essa rua em Londres ilustra perfeitamente o que tá escrito: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/4260278 http://goo.gl/maps/7YNBT Problema de não distingui-las: fica faltando uma informação no mapa que é útil pra muitas pessoas que pensam em passar ou não passar nessas ruas. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Bonjour Simon! Forgive my lack of ability in writing french - hopefully it won't make a difference. Took a look at the area that you are referring to. The area that is designated as the park is a Forest while the other overlapping area is designated as Wood. From looking over the maps provided by the City of Montreal (http://www.lemontroyal.qc.ca/carte/en/index.sn), it would appear that the overlap is incidental - the park area includes much of the green space boxed in by the road and administrative boundary, but not all of it. In fact, the park is separated from the administrative boundary by a small gap. It appears that it should actually be connected to that boundary. The use of Forest is odd - this is a designated park and would likely be better suited to be noted as amenity=park. It is arguable that Forest is not the predominate use for the area as that tag tends to be used for areas that are managed by humans for the purposes of harvesting. Is having the landuse here actually necessary? Using the amenity tag for a park appears to override the Forest tag with the actual use of the land (for recreational purposes). Hope that helps. Both landuse=forest and natural=wood may be used to indicate an area with trees. There are differing views about what the tags mean, so it is possible for one person to sensibly use landuse=forest to map something while a different person would use natural=wood to map that exact same thing. Good point. I've seen the discussion relating to the use of the forest landuse tag and the wood natural tag. It does just boil down to the mappers preference. My answer was based on my use ... there are no wrong answers, of course. Re: [Talk-cz] RUIAN nad OSM
Dotaz byl select from mojeruianadresy_view where cislo_popisne = 3068 and cislo_popisne = 3071 and obec = 'Frýdek-Místek' and ulice = 'Novodvorská' Vypadly z toho čtyři řádky čtyř adresních míst, což je správně. Píchám 'prst' do jeho prostředka - 49.67904, 18.36526 Vyzkoušíme napřed adresní bod domu 3068: select kod from ruian.rn_stavebni_objekt where st_contains(hranice,st_transform(st_geomfromtext('POINT(18.3647662730052 49.6791578553784)',4326),900913)); kod -- 20209436 (1 řádka) OK, to sedí. Teď vyzkoušíme to místo, kam jsem píchl ukazovátko. Je to opravdu prostředek toho paneláku 3070: select kod from ruian.rn_stavebni_objekt where st_contains(hranice,st_transform(st_geomfromtext('POINT(18.36526 49.67904)',4326),900913)); kod - (0 řádek) Ne, na místě toho paneláku v RUIAN opravdu žádný stavební objekt není. Chtělo by to tedy nějakou koordinaci, protože paralelně probíhají importy z MVČR a asi i jiných zdrojů. No nic, jdu spát. -- p Dne Pá 10. ledna 2014 23:58:34, Marián Kyral napsal(a): Ahoj, tohle vypadá moc pěkně. Exemple :ANC RTE D ORANGE A JONQUIE . Re: [OSM-talk-fr] Du Fantoir
-- Christian Quest - OpenStreetMap France ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
