It's just "The template that gets used for emails written to the
list". In my case, it's the address book Reply and New message
templates for the list address. It's not a specific thing. Some use

Quibbling with moderators after personally attacking long-standing

OK, I'll try to find out how to create a special filter for this mailing
list.

Anyway, The Bat! has many issues with HTML, the worst being trying to set up
nested tables instead of using enclosing the quoted text in "" and
""

Using HTML on this list could help to clean up that mess.

Not fonts - plain text always displays with the default font. Though I

[OT] HTML Use on this Mailing List

2008-02-25 Thread Volker Ahrendt
Hello, folks!

For some days or weeks I have found more and more HTML uses in
messages sent to this list without any moderator's interaction.

Have the List Rules been changed since the beginning of this year.

Just curious. To me it doesn't matter, if one uses Plain Text or HTML.

Cheers!

Dear Volker,

@25-Feb-2008, 12:43 +0100 (25-Feb 11:43 here) Volker Ahrendt [VA] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to TBB:

VA For some days or weeks I have found more and more HTML uses in
VA messages sent to this list without any moderator's interaction.

VA Have the List Rules been changed since the beginning of this year.

VA Just curious. To me it doesn't matter, if one uses Plain Text or HTML.

The rules haven't changed. HTML can only be used on list to test HTML
features. Some messages I have ignored recently have been borderline
while others have been clearly testing the new editor features.

If I spot a gratuitous use of HTML, I will still be digging out the
slightly smellier trout I reserve for such occasions.

There are also the times when I've been AWOL for a little too long
and the time to make a point has passed. Oh well.

Yes, though some were relevant i their use of HTML, most weren't. I
guess it's time for us moderators to enforce the rules somewhat more.

Please do not send HTML messages to the list except for purposes of

discussed numerous times on the lists, the list rules prohibit HTML
e-mail. You can easily automate this by using %SetEditor=1 in your
 list template.
Understood. I think you should accept that as a very new to TB
and still getting used to this program.
That said, it is the first email client I have used that
has HTML and I was unaware of the implications for this
list and for that matter %SetEditor.May I suggest
in the welcome letter this macro is mentioned.

A major factor for me and I suspect others is I believe the very sparse user
guide and
help files provided which for such a sophisticated program are really
very inadequate. Maybe some knowledgeable and enterprising
person here could instigate a wiki guide to TB similar to
this http://www.xyplorer.com/xywiki.htm

I can empathize with your situation! Would it be helpful to have
seen the link in the welcome message?

The PCWise site is an external source not under Ritlabs control,
and so maybe mentioning it in the help file could be the source
of problems.

But anyway, this discussion in itself is probably troutable
since we're on Tbbeta where program testing goes on, and not

It's not an absolute - not on TBBETA, because of the need to test
HTML messaging on-list. There are 2 main purposes to not allowing HTML
as a rule: 1) It doubles the message size and we're on borrowed
bandwidth (thanks Johannes!) and 2) HTML causes the main message body
to be MIME encapsulated and that in turn pushes the list message
footer into a part.txt attachment.

KG Appreciate your kind response to the infraction.

 mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck:

HS

HS

TOG Apparently, you also see all these additional line feeds when an HTML
TOG mail is displayed in the PTV. I thought it was only me. worth a bug
TOG report, if there isn't one already?

 I don't know. I've said it before, I'm sure. It's quite a pain, trying
to reply to an HTML message in plain text, my preferred format.

Okay - BugTraq report created. Confirmations?

 https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6217

Note added:

I think this only occurs if the original message hat no alternative
plain text part.

If I reply to an HTML+Text massage, and if i activate first the
Text-tab, the reply is correct.

If it is an HTML only message, even the text-tab and the MicroEd reply
has additional lines.

I am not sure if the bug or issue is not at the sender's side, as he
has not included an text part... so: how respond to something that is
not there?

BUSTED! HTML use (was: Errors on exit)

2007-02-04 Thread Rick Grunwald
Hello Hans
OK you are busted! I had a lot of trouble with the HTML until a couple
of people showed me HOW th straighten that out so I would ALWAYS send
plain text to the group

First go into the address book and find the entry for this group. Then
add macros to define the mail account and the format of the message
Here's mine - and don't forget the space after the double dashes :))

Sorry about that but it raises an issue. A while back someone told me
how to set up the folder so that messages would always be in plain
text. I followed it and tested it and it has been working fine

I just went into the templates and the reference to that was gone - as
a matter of fact when I replied it was not invoking even what was left
of the template. I went in and added %SETEDITOR=1 and all seems to
be working.

To be honest about this, my preferred method is to use address book
templates. AB templates take precedence over folder templates, so a
correct folder template with an incorrect AB template still means that
you get a mess.

Apart from that, you realize of course that your message was lacking
the obligatory signature delimiter, don't you?
A proper signature delimiter consists of dash dash space enter on a
single line.

TB enables you to use address book templates for single address book
entries or for address book groups.
You could create such an address book template set for this list and
use the %SetEditor=1 macro in those templates, that will set the
editor to MicroEd automatically.

RG This message was composed with the plain text - micro ed editor
RG Is it coming through correctly? (non-HTML?)

Yep

RG --

You should change your signature delimiter from dash, dash, enter to
dash, dash, space, enter, the difference is that TB excludes
everything under the proper cutsign when you're quoting a message and
it won't do so with a false cutsign.
You'll see that difference when you try to reply to your messgae and
to mine.

GF Do you have good reasons or is it just no?

There is no reason needed. It is against the rules because they are
the rules of the list. Don't assume that just because the mods may be
older that doesn't make us out of touch with the trends. HTML email is
not a fact of life. It will never be. I accept that you don't mind
HTML mail, but there is no consensus and you can already see that
every person that was even interested enough to reply to your
(misplaced - it should have been off-list) suggestion has said no.

You may want a reason from these people but there's a basic fact that
you seem to have forgotten: nobody has to have a reason to prefer
something.

The way us mods want to run the list is no HTML mails without good
reason. I still tell my clients and friends not to send me HTML mails
and opt for text mails from any subscription lists when available. I'm
not alone in this.

Please do not discuss list management issues on list in future. There

That's not really the point. The point is to test HTML features and

HTML mail is not necessary. However, there is potential for abuse and

banning HTML use. The latter decision is that much easier since it
avoids complicating list management, and it's so easy to do without HTML
mail. The list runs just fine without it and all members can manage

You could use AB templates for mailinglists with these macros:

%SETEDITOR=1 for Plain text Microed
%SETEDITOR=2 for Plain text Windows editor
%SETEDITOR=3 for HTML / Plain
%SETEDITOR=4 for HTML only

I've never tried them myself as I don't use HTML. (That makes the
