Today I got this error again - and had to kill TheBat!

After starting Thebat! it checked an IMAP account and there were new
messages. After clicking on one of a new one in the message list I got
this error.

FWIW this is not new to v5. I have the same problem with Thai language

Complicated. For me, underscores would work. In fact, that's how other
softwares do it.

However, as mentioned in mid:1132969905.20110515005...@fedara.com it
may be wise to make it an option: The user could choose either current

I sent the one from the email folder yesterday, but from using the
appdata line in Windows Explorer (thanks for that tip), I have the
second version of ex_log.txt attached - it is much smaller (see last
paragraph, below).

Did you see the note from someone that Kaspersky may in fact have
played a role here - it apparently is cautious in allowing a new .exe
file to run the first time (and that is when I see the delay when I
click on the start menu shortcut).

I just now again ran TB's command-line opening as you suggested - the
ex_log.txt file is attached.

I found myself having to go bck to 5.0.12.2 due to:

a) error message in the plan text error when trying to send messages
b) it appears there is some going on with memory given when I close the program,
alerts are sounding.

I suspect this being addressed given the feedback on the list.

I look forward to an update in 12.4.

So the idea of leaving file names as they are should be given up - to
not get garbage file names.

And if there is an option (as already proposed) it would be your
decision what you want to have in a file name.

In that way if you like the behaviour you have now you could ignore
the option.

Which is why I said an option to either "auto-replace" illegal
characters with something a user chooses, or give them a box to let
them choose would be best.

I wouldn't understand a filename in Chinese (or Cyrillic characters)
either come to think of it. Then it might as well say just "file1.pdf"
so I could open it, read it and then rename it myself to something
more appropriate.

> I am sharing an idea with you to make TB! a better product.

And I agree with and second your idea. As others have said above the
behaviour of Thunderbird is a useful one to mimic replacing illegal
filename characters with _ or - as appropriate but I think which to
use should be a choice. I am surprised though that some software
produces attachments with a combination of filenames that Windows
can't recognise (i.e. / # and so on).

While I'd agree with this if TB cut off parts of the filename before
every disallowed character, IMHO cutting everything up to (including)
the final (back)slash is acceptable. Practically all modern operating
systems recognize slash as a path delimiter (yes, this includes
Windows, even though it more commonly uses backslashes), and I'd argue
it's the only correct way to handle an attachment with such filename.

If you don't like this behaviour, the bug should be filled with the
application which produces such e-mails.

I think the easiest solution to this is to have a configurable option
in the preferences whereby a user can choose to use a standard scheme
(e.g. replace all illegal filename characters with one of their
choosing), or opt to have a choice in a pop-up dialog should a
conversion error be detected. This way we include both camps: the user
who doesn't really care about the filename so long as it's saved
quickly; and those that would like to take the time to manually adjust
it when saving an attachment.

Either way you look at it though simply discarding all but the last
portion of a filename and adding the extension is just plain wrong.

Another release and still no fixes for virtual folders counts, daily hangs and
broken filters
Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that v5 finally has much better IMAP
support. IMAP seems to be working for me now better then it did in v3 or 4.
So, since IMAP was virtually broke in v3 and v4, and now we have virtual
folders, filters and daily hang issues, does that mean, given the past history
of IMAP, that we will have to wait for v8 before filters and virtual folders
are working correctly... I mean IMAP was not really fixed till v5, so my only
conclusion is that all the issues listed above will not be fixed till version
8. Simple math :)
Ritlabs, prove me wrong. Fix virtual folders, daily hangs and filter issues
before release 6...

Just for reference.
I checked Thunderbird behaviour.

File names for both e-mail clients are as follows:
TB: CCL_2011-253-71450_FELFRTM00019002_FREDERIK 07-05-2011.PDF
TB!: 2011.PDF

As you can see, TB automatically converts unallowed characters
(and user is shown a name to be saved so he can still modify it) but
what's more important it's not dumping any important information of
your clients as TB! does.

Maybe we should ask TBBETA members about their opinion on that
matter?

Maxim > Or, if you think we should change that, please let us know.

AsIwrote in my post '/' character is not allowed by OS and
it's obvious that you need to do something with that. File names with
OS reserved characters are rather not happen too often.

What I do not like in your approach is that you just move from the
end to the first slash and save what gets out: in that case 2011.pdf.

Mostly the most important information describing the file is rather at
the beginning of the file than at the end. If a current solution of
just getting rid of a part of important information is to be used IMO
it should be modified:
- scanning for file name from the beginning (A): CCL_2011 //cut here
- scanning for file extention (B): .pdf

However, I still think that above solution is improper:
- if user doesn't have a knowledge that part of information had been
removed from file name (there is no feedback from TB! that it's
dumping part of data),
- if he doesn't open a folder right after saving a file,
he wouldn't know what TB! did ; in some cases it might be a long
before user opens a folder if files are saved just for future
reference or extracted with filter.

If for example, in your solution:
- the last part is date and time (ex: 20110508_1732.pdf),
- there is a lot of e-mails with strange attachment file name,
- user saves them for future reference with filter or manually,
User may end up with hundreds or thousands of files that are mixed and
without slimest chance to determine what's in the file.

IMO, proper approach would be a pop-up window showing information that
characters used in the file name are improper and file name is planned
to be converted to the NAME (present your customer a name in Bold)
so he can see it clearly and knows what he's doing. User should be
given as well an improper name in editable cell so he can modify it
if he feels that name chosen by TB! is not proper.

Why not to inform user about violation and let him decide if he wants
a file name made by TB! or he wants to modify it by himself?

The

I only found ONE ex_log.txt file on my pc (using Windows 7 search).
It was here: G:\My Documents\The Bat\

I renamed the original ex_log.txt file temporarily while I ran TB with
the command line you gave me above. The new ex_log.txt generated is
attached.

As I mentioned, the slow startup disappeared the next time I ran TB,
and every time since. I think the delay probably occurs whenever I run
a new thebat.exe the first time after an update, including a new .msi
file. Thus I don't know if you will learn anything from this attached
file. Please let me know if you want me to run a re-test after an
update! I could send it in an .rar archive instead, so please let me
if that would be better.

Have a great work week (hopefully, you can take Sunday off to rest!).

Thanks for your help, Mark!

Hi Bob,

%APPDATA% is a Windows way to refer to the folder in your user profile
which (in different Windows versions) is either:

"C:\Users\\AppData" in Windows Vista / 7
"C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data" in prior
releases (such as XP).

I suspect that %EMAIL% relates to the folder where your email is
either downloading (POP3) or caching (IMAP4).

So to clarify, the instructions seem to be asking you to look in one
of those above folders for a log file which you first need to clean
out of the way before running TheBat.exe with /STARTUP_TIMING_LOG
appended to the command line (probably from Start -> Run).

I'd strongly suggest simply renaming the existing files when you find
them (two: one in %EMAIL% and the other in %APPDATA%). Then when you
add the switch to put the timing in the log the log itself will be
empty to start out with.

Hope that helps clarify things somewhat.

Before I respond to your instructions, I want to say that I couldn't
replicate the slow start. TB starts very quickly now! It may be that
the slow start ONLY occurs after a change in the .msi or thebat.exe -
I will monitor that.

Now, about your instructions - I only found one ex_log.txt file using
Windows 7 search - it was in My Documents\The Bat\

I couldn't find anything in that log.txt called %APPDATA% nor could I
find a folder called %APPDATE% anywhere. Same thing is true for
%EMAIL%. Then, you told me to remove those files prior to running TH
with the command line above. I hesitate to remove the entire

It's not wrong, it was:

"CCL_2011/253/71450_FELFRTM00019002_FREDERIK 07/05/2011.pdf"

The Bat! takes slash characters as path delimiters and cuts everything up to
the last slash, and we aren't going to change that.

Or, if you think we should change that, please let us know.

Up and running. All functions I use seem to be going well, except
for the fact that clicking on TB's shortcut in the start menu of

Still wrong file name - check message source, it starts from CCL_2011
not 2011 only (saved as 2011.pdf).

Files with Chinese characters in the name are still not opened - added
