Re: Import from MS Outlook

2002-06-18 Thread Tim Musson

Hey Mark,

My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60h) Personal
to write the following on Monday, June 17, 2002 at 6:03:23 PM.

MW I had a similar problem once upon a time. I finally managed to get
MW past the initial error and then got lots of other errors on various
MW folders. The only thing that worked was renaming the folders from
MW within Outlook. I changed all the spaces to underscores and shortened
MW the longer names.

Too many folders to make that feasible... In that case, I would
probably just take an archive file (much as I would hate to have to
taint my pc with M$Ol to access).

MW I'm not sure what it was about the import process
MW that was choking, but that seemed to do the trick for most messages.
MW There were some that were still unimportable, but I just resigned
MW myself to that.

Maybe it will get fixed in a future version. That would work for me
as I will only need it when my current contract ends.

TM The import did create the folder structure as expected, but no
TM messages. (the import tool did say it would take a while, but I
TM figured 60min was too long for 8-10 msgs g).

MW BTW - if you subtract ten from eight msgs you're left with negative
MW two. I'm not sure how long I would expect -2 messages to import g.

ROTFL - then shouldn't it be done *before* it starts...

editor: Paragraph formatting

2002-06-18 Thread Michael Fross

Wow, Daan. You have captured exactly the issues I have with
autoformating. I frequently use ALT-L to reformat. Don't know how to
do it for the entire message. And can't quickly zoom through the

I didn't notice a reply to this in the digest I get, but does anyone
have any ideas? I would really help me out as well.

Hi Group,

I frequently use Alt-L to reformat a paragraph that I am writing in
the editor.

Quite often, I want to reformat all paragraphs at once. Or all
paragraphs that I have selected with the mouse. I can't find a way to
do that, though. When I mark the paragraphs and then press Alt-L, all
the paragraphs are thrown together into big one illegible blob. I
don't want that - all paragraphs should remain separated by an empty
line, but each paragraph should be individually reformatted. Any
ideas?

btw, it would be very helpful if after the reformatting, the cursor
would jump to the start of the next paragraph. That way you could
quickly reformat your whole message simply by pressing Alt-L a few
times.

Re[2]: SPAM filter with The Bat (Mailwasher program)

2002-06-18 Thread Daniel van Rooijen [CopyCats]

Hi Marck,

All such bounce messages do, no matter how well intentioned or formed,
is inform the spammer that the message got through.

Oh boy..

Thanks for the enlightenment!! :)

I'm now trying those Spamcop filters from the TB FAQ, but I'm not sure if
they work as intended. Here's what I found:

- Shouldn't the first stage filter (that creates a spam submission
message) be set to manual only? Wouldn't it otherwise automatically
respond to any incoming message that fulfills the criterion of having
a '.' in its kludges? Of course the Ctrl-Alt-S trigger is also set,
but I don't know if that will override automatic execution..

- The file to export to (C:\TEMP\EXPORT.TXT) was set correctly when I
pasted the filter into the sorting office, but the Export to File
action itself was not activated. Also, append to existing file was
set, which I think will inadvertently report any previously sent spam
along with the current spam message. I've changed that into
overwrite. The export format was Text, is that alright? The quote
kludges was Off, and I've turned that on.

I hope I made the correct changes (and if so, maybe the author of the
filter should update this FAQ section?). I'm using TB 1.60q.

Yes it would!

Of course the Ctrl-Alt-S trigger is also set, but I don't know if
 that will override automatic execution..

Yes - it should be manual. It actually has the faoManualOnly flag
and should be pasted as a manual filter. Perhaps there's a bug in the
filter paste function?

 - The file to export to (C:\TEMP\EXPORT.TXT) was set correctly when

Again, the filter source says:

faExport,faoExportOver,faoExportKludges

All of which seem to have failed to import correctly :-(.

I hope I made the correct changes (and if so, maybe the author of
the filter should update this FAQ section?).

Who, me? (I am both the author of the filter and the maintainer of the
FAQ g). I'll have to annotate the filter to say that it may not
import correctly. What a pain!

2002-06-18 Thread Daniel van Rooijen [CopyCats]

Hi Marck,

MDP I always report to SpamCop (there are some nice filters for doing
MDP this published on the FAQ)

The second stage filter doesn't work right for me either.. it finds
the incoming confirmation from Spamcop, then exports the whole message to
spamcop.bat and tries to execute it! :) The error seems to be in
the export template, which looks like:

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
From:#OFromName #OFromAddr
To: #OToName #OToAddr
Date:#ODateEn, #OTimeLongEn
Subject: #OSubj
Files: #Attachments
--===--
#Text
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

(I have replaced the % signs by # to prevent execution within this message)

I suspect there's some incompatibility between these SpamCop filters
(from http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/howdoi.html) and TB 1.60q.

Do you have a working version of the export template for spamcop.bat?

Best,

You'll have to 'Purge' this (or all) folder(s) to make The Bat! cleaning up
following the rules you've set in folder properties.

This can either be done on 'Exit', when set in folder properties on first
tab sheet at the very end, or manually when choosing menu 'Folder' /

DvRC Alt-nnn, the Bat doesn't enter the character but instead performs all
DvRC sorts of system functions (menu's pop up, etc). Do you know of a way
DvRC to turn this off?

Is there a small chance you have turned 'NumLock' off and don't keep
'Alt' pressed while trying to enter the character codes?
I can create exactly the same behavior you're describing if I do so ...

Re[2]: SPAM filter with The Bat (Mailwasher program)

2002-06-18 Thread Daniel van Rooijen [CopyCats]

Hi Marck,

MDP Nope. You done good! The How to says to use Ctrl-V. Actually, I just
MDP tried it and it's completely hit and miss!

Matthias' hint about the broken lines on the website was right on
target - I've got the filters working now.

However, I had to make a small change to the second stage export
template for the spamcop.bat file. I turned the part where you check
for http://\S*; into http://spamcop.net/sc\S*;.

The reason is that Spamcop's confirmations to me contain several
instances of http://;, and the first one (that the template catches)
leads to a page with an offer to upgrade my Spamcop account to a paid
one.. Here's what it said:

   PLEASE HELP SUPPORT THIS SERVICE!
SpamCop is free. However, if you like the service please pay for it:
   http://spamcop.net/upgradeaccount.shtml?EWmxUXyY13zmNWJo

SpamCop is now ready to process your spam.

Use links to finish spam reporting:
   http://spamcop.net/sc?id=z40442472ze7b89484a95a9a956b620bf34c203bbdz

So, the export filter didn't catch the right URL and sent me to the
upgrade offer instead (which I may well take later on).

Thanks for your help!!

Try to compress the folder.

If that doesn't work, exit TB and delete the messages.tbi file in the
directory belonging to that TB-folder and restart TB. When you open
the folder TB will create a new .tbi
This has the disadvantage that all deleted messages are back again,
but now you should be able to delete all.

Pass - try doing a Ctrl-C on the filter in the filter list then a
Ctrl-V into a replay to this message so we can see what you've
actually got in the filter. It works fine for those not stumbling over
bad wrapping.

Actually, that may be the problem anyway: if your viewer wrapped the

Is the fact that it's a common folder have any affect? Plus it's not
marking it as read, because all mail that has been marked as spam by
the server gets dumped into a common folder, and marked as read... I
then process at a later time... would that affect it as well?

I could never replicate the problem again. The bug was removed from

just going to put the other one in too, and I should be all okay to

%ACCOUNT is a macro... just replace main with the name of the

The Bat! 2.0

2002-06-18 Thread --pb

Bonjour,

I have use and tried The Bat! for some times now, and I must say
that my feelings are mixed regarding this e-mail client. The
program is buggy, no doubt about that. Sometimes crashes, some
functions behave bizarrement. Cannot use PGP 7.xx plus... But,
on the other hand, you have some strong features like filtering
and Templates. But then, you must have a master's degree just to
learn those damn Regex machin choses.

So here I am at the crossroads, should I go back to Outlook or
should I wait for The Bat! 2.0?

My wish list would include, for a good The Bat! client, these
 features:

 1. Totally revamped interface (GUI). Skinable preferably, since
 this one is so ugly.

 2. Macros and Template creations should be done without a single
% sign ;-) That is, I would like to see check boxes, drop down
menus, options, clickable buttons, etc. Even though these things
 (http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm)
are powerful when properly configured, they nonetheless are
ridiculous when you think about a large non-geek audience.

 3. Stability! Of course, when my computer reboots, when I lose
messages and attachments, this is no fun at all.

So, if someone can answer this question, I will have a clear idea
 as what to do:

Will The Bat! 2.0 be out some day?

I've heard somewhere that the first betas will be available at the end

Do a regular clean up ;) To be honest, this isn't really TB! fault...
Norton holds the lock for just too long, so TB! disregards the file.
If the coders were to set it so that it waited until the lock was
removed, it would possibly cause TB! to crash as it'd end up holding
on waiting for that file.

Bonjour Jernej,

JS The Bat is is primary meant for advanced users. And believe me, it's
JS much easier (and faster) to create a template using a few %macros than
JS it would be through any GUI (ever tried to create a template in
JS Word?). BTW: you can access all macros by clicking the [Macros] button
JS below the template edit box.

I know that it is meant for advanced users, but if you want (not you
of course but the creators/editors of The Bat!) to make a few bucks
out of this program, you have to have a large audience.

And regarding the Macros button, I couldn't agree more if I were an
anglophone. But I have to tweak like hell those codes just to have a
simple French date line that goes like Mardi, le 18 juin 2002 à
14h37. Of course, I would never be able to do that without the help
of some power users. This is why I say that it is too complicated.
There must be a way to implement simple yet powerful features with
check boxes. I am no programmer, but I am sure that the solution is
out there for anyone with a bit of imagination.

It has some minor bugs that are over-advertised, IMHO. I do not know a

only piece of software that I know where there is a real communication
with the developers, they listen, they fix the bugs, and they
implement our wishes.

p Sometimes crashes,

But you don't need them. If you do know how to use RegEx, TB is a very
powerful tool for the advanced user - even seasoned programmers love
it. If you don't know RegEx, you still have a filtering system that is
far better than any other client I know. the only RegExes I use are
the ones I have copied from the FAQ site. I do not claim to fully
understand them. But I do claim that what they do is pure luxury. Do
you know of another client that could create the time line (as I
like to call it) at the beginning of this reply?

p So here I am at the crossroads, should I go back to Outlook or
p should I wait for The Bat! 2.0?

I have converted a few people from Outlook to TB for the single
reason that MS declares its bugs and security holes as features. The
Klez virus, to name just one example, would be stillborn if not so
many people used Outlook. I had an email exchange with Trend Antivirus
when their newsletter still said this virus propagates itself
automatically by email programs. As most viruses do need OL/OE, they
have since changed the text accrdingly.

If you do want to compromise your system by default and install OL,
that's up to you. But kindly ensure that my email address is nowhere
on your system. ;-)

p My wish list would include, for a good The Bat! client, these
p features:

p 1. Totally revamped interface (GUI). Skinable preferably, since
p this one is so ugly.

Ugliness (as is beauty) is in the eye of the beholder. With TB being a
tool for people who like functionality rather than colourful clickable
interfaces, I believe there has been limited priority on the GUI.
However, if you want to come up with some creative ideas, I would
suggest you contact Ritlabs directly.

p 2. Macros and Template creations should be done without a single
p % sign ;-) That is, I would like to see check boxes, drop down
p menus, options, clickable buttons, etc. Even though these things
p (http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm)
p are powerful when properly configured, they nonetheless are
p ridiculous when you think about a large non-geek audience.

Right. A non-geek autdience would probably not have any use for the
functionality of that template, though. But I do like the idea of
adding a GUI version for macro usage, in addition to the current
version (which programmers like). Have you already added it to the
wishlist?

By the way, hearing your critisism, which client are you talking about
that offers this particular functionality for a non-geek audience?

p 3. Stability! Of course, when my computer reboots, when I lose
p messages and attachments, this is no fun at all.

Well, I cannot comment on that. TB has been running stable over here
since version 1.34, so I wonder what problem the with your system is.
Would you care to elaborate?

p So, if someone can answer this question, I will have a clear idea
p as what to do:

p Will The Bat! 2.0 be out some day?

Here is the answer: Yes. ;-) But I personally don't care about version
numbers. Would it have satisfied you had they called this current
version 2.0?

I agree with that. It is possible. It is a wish for a future version.

@Jernej: I mean this - a localisable GUI that places the marcos into

Inbox sub-folders: erm, they just sorta dissapeared...

2002-06-18 Thread Jonathan Day

Hi

I'm in the process of trialling TB (1.60q)

I downloaded and read some mail late last night and it seems I have
messed up somewhere. I've searched the archives via subject heading to
no avail.

I had several sub folders set up in my in box, with loads of emails
transfered from Outlook Express. When I now enter TB, all the mail in
the in box, the sub folders and their contents have dissapeared from
within TB. But folders like Sent mail are unaffected.

If I use Windows Explorer, all the sub-folders are present, each one
containing a messages.tbb messages.tbi

I thought I must have accidently deleted the in box rather than an
individual mail, but I can import the mail from the files within the
folders. I looks like I have to just import the messages again and re-create
the folders and re-apply the filters.

What have I done? I assume it's me rather than TB ;-)

Thanks

Jon

more info on dissapearing folder prob

2002-06-18 Thread Jonathan Day

Me again

Just tried to make a new folder in preperation for the importing and
re-filtering process, using the same name as i used before so the
still filters work.

I get a message box saying:
The directory specified already seems to be used by other folder. Do
you still want to use this directory?

So TB still recognises the folders are there somewhere.

BTW, as far as I can see, I do not have any display filters active.

I'm not sure if my opinion is valid one but anyway:

I'm in the medical field. I don't directly use a computer at work. I
have no formal training in computing either. One of the things that
impressed me MOST about TB! when I first started using it, was how easy
it was to create those templates. Have you given it a try? I could
write TB! templates before I could write batch files.

Stop gawking at those complex, regular expression based and recursive
macros. Most will not need to go there. Leave them to those capable of
writing them. You can use them, sure. But you don't have to be able to
write them. TB!'s implementation allows EASY creation of simple
templates for most individual needs and still allows creation of
complex, powerful macros. This is perfect if you ask me. It allows the
user to develop as I and others have. I can now help myself with a lot
of the more complex template macros but I still have a few here that I
use but don't understand. I only know what they do.

P And regarding the Macros button, I couldn't agree more if I were
P an anglophone. But I have to tweak like hell those codes just to
P have a simple French date line that goes like Mardi, le 18 juin
P 2002 à 14h37.

Well, there's obtaining the standard output and then there's tweaking
the standard output. Two *totally* different tasks. With what you
wish, you'll very likely not be able to tweak things the way you have.
Be careful what you wish for. There's a tradeoff one has to make
between power and simplicity. The simplicity is already there and yet
the power is there as well in a way I've personally never seen before
in an application.

P Of course, I would never be able to do that without the help of
P some power users. This is why I say that it is too complicated.

It is complicated because being able to do this doesn't come easily.
You *have* to put in your time to learn it. You can't expect all that
you wish to do to be learnt in a snap. We certainly would wish this
but it's certainly not the case.

I'm by no means an expert at writing regular expressions but I can
take care of myself where most of my needs are concerned. It's simple
for me to write some of the expressions that I write now, but not
before many hours of sitting down and learning to write them.

P There must be a way to implement simple yet powerful features with
P check boxes. I am no programmer, but I am sure that the solution is
P out there for anyone with a bit of imagination.

You'd end up castrating the interface and holding everyone back. What
about those who want to do more??? I don't see how under the sun one
can reduce the construction of those more complex macro/regex combos
to simple drop down menu selections. This is why the CLI and
programming languages will be here to stay, whether it's behind the
scenes or not.

My 2 cents

2002-06-18 Thread --pb

= En réponse à un précédent message

Bonjour Thomas,

p Sometimes crashes,

TF Not here, but I don't doubt that on some systems it does. Would you
TF care to describe the circumstances under which you experience this?

Yes my pleasure, I will try to do my best to remember.

For instance, I had 4 accounts, one of which had all my Quick
templates (again, please refer to
http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm for an
overview of those templates). Now, this account is no longer valid, so
I had to copy (!) all those templates to my new account because I
wanted to get rid of this old account. BTW, I never figured out how to
drag drop those Quick Templates from one account to the other.
Anyway, so in the cut paste process, right click, left click, right
click... BOOM! My computer reboots! Dammit! Why? No idea at all.

Now, another one. I like to keep my documents on a specific partition,
all of them, not on the same partition that Windows is installed on. I
just bought a new drive: Drive 1, partition C, Windows; Drive 2,
partition D, Data. So, Options Preferences System Mail
Directory: change C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\ (default) for my
new place on my new drive. There you go, I keep on having this little
warning icon in the task bar saying that my file is lost, file could
not be written and all this crap. Damn! So I came back to the default
directory under C:\. It referred to some kind of .srx and .flx files.

These are just two examples of instability and weird (bizarres) things
happening.

Now, please do not get my wrong here, and this goes to all those Bat
lovers out there. This app is pretty powerful and useful, indeed. I
just wish it would be more stable (perhaps just in my case), more user
friendly, and much better looking (this is just personal and not
really important, but compared to MagikTweak, the latest RealOne from
RealAudio or the latest Adobe and Macromedia apps... Ouf!) This is
what I expect from version 2.0, not more features. I think it is time
to improve those features already implemented. This is just my 2
cents.

You would still be able to see the macro as created by hitting the
button.

ACM I think it's just an unreasonable expectation of being able to have
ACM command of the power TB! offers after a trivial look-over.

In my experience, a GUI never gives you the power you have with a CLI
(see the random cookie!). The clickable buttons would only insert
pre-written macros/regexes. The CLI would still be available.

Example (maybe not really good): Instead of cp'ing the Spamcop
filters from the FAQ page, imagine there would be a button labeled
create SpamCop filters. My mother (who loves TB but has no idea
about templates, macros, or regexes) could use it. ;-)

And my point is that you can't expect TB to have a button for every
conceivable macro. There's an abundance of macros available, but it
has to stop somewhere and to expect a button that creates the
equivalent of some regexp combined with four or five quick templates
isn't just a 'not very good example', but it's a very good example to
show that there are places that can't be reached with 'click and go'.

There'd be some many buttons that the newbies couldn't find their way

It seems that Roelof Otten said ...

R anymore. And thus they'd have the opposite effect as intended.

This is true. What I like about TB is its quickness and its ability to
be molded into the tool I need. It's simple enough to operate that a
new user won't have much trouble with it -- no more than with Outlook
or Eudora or Communicator. Following discussions here, poking through
the help file, and experimenting with regular expressions will reveal
functions that aren't immediately apparent. TB does more with a clean,
simple (this is ugly?) interface than any pretty program.

Give me functionality and power. And maybe a little more time. I've
been using TB for a little over 2 years and I have mastered probably
1/3 of its tricks.

TF button labeld translate date into local language could put the
TF whole thing into the template.

The developers can't be expected to create a nice little button for
each of the useful things achieved by end user construction of complex
macros???

It's true that their macro list is increasing steadily. Looking at the
complete list of macros tells us this. We can't however, put them all
in drop down menus. We can't expect a macro to be created for all the
things out there that have been written. There are so many subtle
variations and tweaks out there anyway. Can you tweak the nice little
button or can you tweak the macro itself, which brings you right back
to square one.

ACM Who really cares about the format of the macro itself, i.e.,
ACM whether or not it carries a % sign? In fact this is better since
ACM you can tell where the macros are so it's easier to see what the
ACM template is doing.

TF You would still be able to see the macro as created by hitting the
TF button.

You hit a menu selection and the macro appeared in plain text. What
makes it harder to understand or do than hitting a button? it's a
rhetorical question really. I steadfastly do not think it's harder :-)

TF In my experience, a GUI never gives you the power you have with a
TF CLI (see the random cookie!). The clickable buttons would only
TF insert pre-written macros/regexes. The CLI would still be
TF available.

But that is what you're doing with the macro button menu items.
Inserting them. How are you going to deal with the rest of your none
macro based text? You have to have it flowing as it does now.

I like MDaemons filtering system which has an approach to what you're
thinking. It's really not that different from what TB! does at
present.

TF Example (maybe not really good): Instead of cp'ing the Spamcop
TF filters from the FAQ page, imagine there would be a button labeled
TF create SpamCop filters. My mother (who loves TB but has no idea
TF about templates, macros, or regexes) could use it. ;-)

Example not good. g I see your point but I don't see where it's
needed here. I assure you that users would remain confused considering
what these templates can do. If they're confused with the current
implementation then they'll remain confused with other methods.

I think what has happened is that the list is so mature, that regex
macros are being spoken of and passed around as if it's a trivial
matter to create them and that everyone should be able to do it with
little effort, and if this isn't so, then blame the interface. I
simply cannot agree with that.

Following is adapted from what found from FAQ. The difference is that only

There are two methods, both of which use regular expressions. If
you're happy with the way TB generates initials then you can use the
method found in the following link.
http://www.mail-archive.com/tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com/msg02140.html

If you would like to be more selective about the initials, you can do
it using the method in the following links.

Re: editor: Paragraph formatting

Hello Daniel,

DVR Quite often, I want to reformat all paragraphs at once. Or all
DVR paragraphs that I have selected with the mouse. I can't find a
DVR way to do that, though.

Well, it isn't exactly the solution you asked for, but you can use a
quick template to approximate the job. You actually need two quick
templates:

[QT wrap]
%COMMENT=%CLIPBOARD%-
%QINCLUDE=wrap2
%COMMENT=
[End]

[QT wrap2]
%IF:'%-
%SETPATTREGEXP=(?is-m)[^\n]+%-
%REGEXPMATCH=%COMMENT''':'%-
%-
%WRAPPED=_%SETPATTREGEXP=(?is-m)^(.*?)(\n((\w{0,5}(\\s*)+)?\n){1,}(.*)$|\z)%-
%-%-%-%-%-%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=%COMMENT%-
%-%-%-%-%-%SUBPATT=1_
%-
%COMMENT=_%SETPATTREGEXP=(?is-m)^.*?(\n((\w{0,5}(\\s*)+)?\n){1,}(.*)$|\z)%-
%-%-%-%-%-%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=%COMMENT%-
%-%-%-%-%-%SUBPATT=5_
%-
%QINCLUDE=wrap2'
[End]

Note: I would have just posted the link to the original version* in the
archive, but these templates have been updated to work properly with
the current TB release (1.60q).
* http://www.mail-archive.com/tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com/msg01525.html

So with this set of templates, you'd select the paragraphs to be
reformatted, press ctrl-x, type wrap (without the quotes) then
ctrl-space. That's it. Note that this template system will also
work on quoted text.

DVR When I mark the paragraphs and then press Alt-L, all the
DVR paragraphs are thrown together into big one illegible blob.

Yes, but while this may seem like a nuisance, there is a benefit.
When you select text then press alt-L, TB assumes that the
selected text is one paragraph. TB *only* reformats those lines.
That means that if you want to reformat one entry in a list, you can
select just that entry without ruining the list.

ms exchange and MailTicker(tm) problem

2002-06-18 Thread Kamil Chatrnuch

hello *,
can somebody give me a hint about these two problems?
1.) when I'm downloading messages from the ms exchange server, through
bat! and I get disconnected from my dial-up in the middle of the
download, I'm not able the retrieve the 'not downloaded' messages
again. the bat! connection center is frozen. they are still on the
mail server, but the status is 'read', so bat!'s not downloading them
again. also after few crashes the connection center won't hide now,
when finished with downloads.

2.) under one of my accounts, I have a folder where I normally receive
mails from mailing lists. there are many unread mails. the field in the
'folder properties' called 'show unread messages on MailTicker(tm)' is
unchecked, but the MailTicker(tm) is still showing also these
messages, which is rather unpleasant, as there are more than 200
unread messages.

thanx in forward,
kamil

Hello Roelof,

Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at 23:29 GMT +0200, was when inspiration
required Roelof Otten [RO] to write:

TF How about the example given at
TF http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm ?
snip
RO Besides, his problem was not the time/date in French, but he filtered
RO with regexp a partial header and wanted to translate that.

Not only that, but the format of the whole string is very much
customized. I suppose one could argue that with the current version,
the format can be customized with the standard macros, but that wasn't
the case when that example (and its ancestor) was written.

Automate it if you want :P

To be honest, this isn't really TB! fault...

 Oh, but it is.

Depends on your standpoint... from what I've experience with the software we
write, most anti-virus applications have a habbit of locking a file just before
the file gets read, moved, copied, or deleted. Now when TB goes to delete the
file, the anti-virus program locks the file, so TB gets a flag saying file busy,
I'm sure the coders may have added in a try statement to attempt to do it 3
times... depending on the system, and setup, this may fail several times, so TB
fails the delete, hence you end up with temp files. As for why there aren't
always temp files, if your virus scanner releases the lock before TB tries to do
anything with the file, then TB can happily remove it... it's a question of
timing. We've found in 99% of the cases where files have been reported as
locked (we develop accounting software), disabling the virus scanner for a 10
minute test shows the lock issue vanishes. In theory, it may not even be with
the temporary file itself... it may be with the temporary file's lock file
(which is where our software has issues, the database lock file isn't removed
because the anti-virus software has a lock on the lock file... when the database
attempts to remove the lock, it cannot... so fails trying without error, but
when you next attempt to access the file, the original lock file is still there,
and the table is still open).

Then there is the other standpoint which says it is TB! fault... saying it
didn't attempt to delete it enough times... If the programmers of TB were to
force TB to make X number of attempts more at deleting the file, you could end
up stuck in a nasty loop of delays, eventually slowing the system down.
