Re: Import from MS Outlook
Hey Mark, My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60h) Personal to write the following on Monday, June 17, 2002 at 6:03:23 PM. MW I had a similar problem once upon a time. I finally managed to get MW past the initial error and then got lots of other errors on various MW folders. The only thing that worked was renaming the folders from MW within Outlook. I changed all the spaces to underscores and shortened MW the longer names. Too many folders to make that feasible... In that case, I would probably just take an archive file (much as I would hate to have to taint my pc with M$Ol to access). MW I'm not sure what it was about the import process MW that was choking, but that seemed to do the trick for most messages. MW There were some that were still unimportable, but I just resigned MW myself to that. Maybe it will get fixed in a future version. That would work for me as I will only need it when my current contract ends. TM The import did create the folder structure as expected, but no TM messages. (the import tool did say it would take a while, but I TM figured 60min was too long for 8-10 msgs g). MW BTW - if you subtract ten from eight msgs you're left with negative MW two. I'm not sure how long I would expect -2 messages to import g. ROTFL - then shouldn't it be done *before* it starts... -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] MUA = TB! v1.60q (www.RitLabs.com/The_Bat) Windows 2000 5.0.2195 (Service Pack 2) Why get even, when you can get odd? editor: Paragraph formatting
Wow, Daan. You have captured exactly the issues I have with autoformating. I frequently use ALT-L to reformat. Don't know how to do it for the entire message. And can't quickly zoom through the message and reformat. I didn't notice a reply to this in the digest I get, but does anyone have any ideas? I would really help me out as well. Loving the bat. Quite often, I want to reformat all paragraphs at once. Or all paragraphs that I have selected with the mouse. I can't find a way to do that, though. When I mark the paragraphs and then press Alt-L, all the paragraphs are thrown together into big one illegible blob. I don't want that - all paragraphs should remain separated by an empty line, but each paragraph should be individually reformatted. Any ideas? btw, it would be very helpful if after the reformatting, the cursor would jump to the start of the next paragraph. That way you could quickly reformat your whole message simply by pressing Alt-L a few times. Re[2]: SPAM filter with The Bat (Mailwasher program)
Hi Marck, All such bounce messages do, no matter how well intentioned or formed, is inform the spammer that the message got through. Oh boy.. Thanks for the enlightenment!! :) I'm now trying those Spamcop filters from the TB FAQ, but I'm not sure if they work as intended. Here's what I found: - Shouldn't the first stage filter (that creates a spam submission message) be set to manual only? Wouldn't it otherwise automatically respond to any incoming message that fulfills the criterion of having a '.' in its kludges? Of course the Ctrl-Alt-S trigger is also set, but I don't know if that will override automatic execution.. - The file to export to (C:\TEMP\EXPORT.TXT) was set correctly when I pasted the filter into the sorting office, but the Export to File action itself was not activated. Also, append to existing file was set, which I think will inadvertently report any previously sent spam along with the current spam message. I've changed that into overwrite. The export format was Text, is that alright? The quote kludges was Off, and I've turned that on. I hope I made the correct changes (and if so, maybe the author of the filter should update this FAQ section?). I'm using TB 1.60q. Re[2]: SPAM filter with The Bat (Mailwasher program)
Hi Marck, MDP I always report to SpamCop (there are some nice filters for doing MDP this published on the FAQ) The second stage filter doesn't work right for me either.. it finds the incoming confirmation from Spamcop, then exports the whole message to spamcop.bat and tries to execute it! :) The error seems to be in the export template, which looks like: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= From:#OFromName #OFromAddr To: #OToName #OToAddr Date:#ODateEn, #OTimeLongEn Subject: #OSubj Files: #Attachments --===-- #Text =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= (I have replaced the % signs by # to prevent execution within this message) I suspect there's some incompatibility between these SpamCop filters (from http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/howdoi.html) and TB 1.60q. Do you have a working version of the export template for spamcop.bat? Hi Marck, MDP Nope. You done good! The How to says to use Ctrl-V. Actually, I just MDP tried it and it's completely hit and miss! Matthias' hint about the broken lines on the website was right on target - I've got the filters working now. However, I had to make a small change to the second stage export template for the spamcop.bat file. I turned the part where you check for http://\S*; into http://spamcop.net/sc\S*;. The reason is that Spamcop's confirmations to me contain several instances of http://;, and the first one (that the template catches) leads to a page with an offer to upgrade my Spamcop account to a paid one.. Here's what it said: PLEASE HELP SUPPORT THIS SERVICE! SpamCop is free. However, if you like the service please pay for it: http://spamcop.net/upgradeaccount.shtml?EWmxUXyY13zmNWJo SpamCop is now ready to process your spam. Use links to finish spam reporting: http://spamcop.net/sc?id=z40442472ze7b89484a95a9a956b620bf34c203bbdz So, the export filter didn't catch the right URL and sent me to the upgrade offer instead (which I may well take later on). Hi Peter, PP Is there a small chance you have turned 'NumLock' off and don't keep PP 'Alt' pressed while trying to enter the character codes?. I am keeping Alt pressed down, but you're right about Numlock - it is off (as it should be!! :-) When I turn Numlock on, Alt-nnn and Alt- works fine.. The Bat! 2.0
Bonjour, I have use and tried The Bat! for some times now, and I must say that my feelings are mixed regarding this e-mail client. The program is buggy, no doubt about that. Sometimes crashes, some functions behave bizarrement. Cannot use PGP 7.xx plus... But, on the other hand, you have some strong features like filtering and Templates. But then, you must have a master's degree just to learn those damn Regex machin choses. So here I am at the crossroads, should I go back to Outlook or should I wait for The Bat! 2.0? My wish list would include, for a good The Bat! client, these features: 1. Totally revamped interface (GUI). Skinable preferably, since this one is so ugly. 2. Macros and Template creations should be done without a single % sign ;-) That is, I would like to see check boxes, drop down menus, options, clickable buttons, etc. Even though these things (http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm) are powerful when properly configured, they nonetheless are ridiculous when you think about a large non-geek audience. 3. Stability! Of course, when my computer reboots, when I lose messages and attachments, this is no fun at all. So, if someone can answer this question, I will have a clear idea as what to do: Will The Bat! 2.0 be out some day? -- Cordialement, --pb [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ: 100119373 Version PGP: 6.5.8, clé publique 0xCF61FFC3. By any chance, do you have a virus scanner on your computer? It could be possible that TB! is creating a file, your virus scanner locks it for scanning, then when TB! tries to delete it, the file is reported as locked, so TB! continues processing as normal, leaving the temp file there. -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Bonjour Jernej, JS The Bat is is primary meant for advanced users. I have converted a few people from Outlook to TB for the single reason that MS declares its bugs and security holes as features. I had an email exchange with Trend Antivirus when their newsletter still said this virus propagates itself automatically by email programs. With TB being a tool for people who like functionality rather than colourful clickable interfaces, I believe there has been limited priority on the GUI. Right. A non-geek autdience would probably not have any use for the functionality of that template, though. But I do like the idea of adding a GUI version for macro usage, in addition to the current version (which programmers like). Have you already added it to the wishlist? By the way, hearing your critisism, which client are you talking about that offers this particular functionality for a non-geek audience? p 3. Stability! Of course, when my computer reboots, when I lose p messages and attachments, this is no fun at all. Well, I cannot comment on that. TB has been running stable over here since version 1.34, so I wonder what problem the with your system is. Would you care to elaborate? p So, if someone can answer this question, I will have a clear idea p as what to do: p Will The Bat! 2.0 be out some day? Inbox sub-folders: erm, they just sorta dissapeared...
Hi I'm in the process of trialling TB (1.60q) I downloaded and read some mail late last night and it seems I have messed up somewhere. I've searched the archives via subject heading to no avail. I had several sub folders set up in my in box, with loads of emails transfered from Outlook Express. When I now enter TB, all the mail in the in box, the sub folders and their contents have dissapeared from within TB. But folders like Sent mail are unaffected. If I use Windows Explorer, all the sub-folders are present, each one containing a messages.tbb messages.tbi I thought I must have accidently deleted the in box rather than an individual mail, but I can import the mail from the files within the folders. I looks like I have to just import the messages again and re-create the folders and re-apply the filters. What have I done? One of the things that impressed me MOST about TB! when I first started using it, was how easy it was to create those templates. Have you given it a try? I could write TB! templates before I could write batch files. Stop gawking at those complex, regular expression based and recursive macros. Most will not need to go there. Leave them to those capable of writing them. You can use them, sure. But you don't have to be able to write them. TB!'s implementation allows EASY creation of simple templates for most individual needs and still allows creation of complex, powerful macros. This is perfect if you ask me. It allows the user to develop as I and others have. I can now help myself with a lot of the more complex template macros but I still have a few here that I use but don't understand. With what you wish, you'll very likely not be able to tweak things the way you have. Be careful what you wish for. There's a tradeoff one has to make between power and simplicity. The simplicity is already there and yet the power is there as well in a way I've personally never seen before in an application. It is complicated because being able to do this doesn't come easily. You *have* to put in your time to learn it. You can't expect all that you wish to do to be learnt in a snap. We certainly would wish this but it's certainly not the case. I'm by no means an expert at writing regular expressions but I can take care of myself where most of my needs are concerned. It's simple for me to write some of the expressions that I write now, but not before many hours of sitting down and learning to write them. P There must be a way to implement simple yet powerful features with P check boxes. I am no programmer, but I am sure that the solution is P out there for anyone with a bit of imagination. = En réponse à un précédent message Bonjour Thomas, p Sometimes crashes, TF Not here, but I don't doubt that on some systems it does. Would you TF care to describe the circumstances under which you experience this? Yes my pleasure, I will try to do my best to remember. For instance, I had 4 accounts, one of which had all my Quick templates (again, please refer to http://www.ginkyo.org/contenu/pages/TheBat/thebat_macros.htm for an overview of those templates). Now, this account is no longer valid, so I had to copy (!) all those templates to my new account because I wanted to get rid of this old account. BTW, I never figured out how to drag drop those Quick Templates from one account to the other. Anyway, so in the cut paste process, right click, left click, right click... BOOM! My computer reboots! Dammit! Why? No idea at all. Now, another one. I like to keep my documents on a specific partition, all of them, not on the same partition that Windows is installed on. I just bought a new drive: Drive 1, partition C, Windows; Drive 2, partition D, Data. So, Options Preferences System Mail Directory: change C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\ (default) for my new place on my new drive. There you go, I keep on having this little warning icon in the task bar saying that my file is lost, file could not be written and all this crap. Damn! So I came back to the default directory under C:\. It referred to some kind of .srx and .flx files. These are just two examples of instability and weird (bizarres) things happening. Now, please do not get my wrong here, and this goes to all those Bat lovers out there. This app is pretty powerful and useful, indeed. I just wish it would be more stable (perhaps just in my case), more user friendly, and much better looking (this is just personal and not really important, but compared to MagikTweak, the latest RealOne from RealAudio or the latest Adobe and Macromedia apps... Ouf!) This is what I expect from version 2.0, not more features. I think it is time to improve those features already implemented. This is just my 2 cents. -- Cordialement, --pb [EMAIL PROTECTED] Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Re[2]: The Bat! 2.0 (probably OT)
It seems that Roelof Otten said ... R There'd be some many buttons that the newbies couldn't find their way R anymore. And thus they'd have the opposite effect as intended. This is true. What I like about TB is its quickness and its ability to be molded into the tool I need. It's simple enough to operate that a new user won't have much trouble with it -- no more than with Outlook or Eudora or Communicator. Following discussions here, poking through the help file, and experimenting with regular expressions will reveal functions that aren't immediately apparent. TB does more with a clean, simple (this is ugly?) interface than any pretty program. Give me functionality and power. And maybe a little more time. I've been using TB for a little over 2 years and I have mastered probably 1/3 of its tricks. A TF button labeld translate date into local language could put the TF whole thing into the template. The developers can't be expected to create a nice little button for each of the useful things achieved by end user construction of complex macros??? It's true that their macro list is increasing steadily. Looking at the complete list of macros tells us this. We can't however, put them all in drop down menus. We can't expect a macro to be created for all the things out there that have been written. There are so many subtle variations and tweaks out there anyway. Can you tweak the nice little button or can you tweak the macro itself, which brings you right back to square one. ACM Who really cares about the format of the macro itself, i.e., ACM whether or not it carries a % sign? In fact this is better since ACM you can tell where the macros are so it's easier to see what the ACM template is doing. TF You would still be able to see the macro as created by hitting the TF button. You hit a menu selection and the macro appeared in plain text. What makes it harder to understand or do than hitting a button? it's a rhetorical question really. I steadfastly do not think it's harder :-) TF In my experience, a GUI never gives you the power you have with a TF CLI (see the random cookie!). The clickable buttons would only TF insert pre-written macros/regexes. The CLI would still be TF available. But that is what you're doing with the macro button menu items. Inserting them. How are you going to deal with the rest of your none macro based text? You have to have it flowing as it does now. I like MDaemons filtering system which has an approach to what you're thinking. It's really not that different from what TB! does at present. TF Example (maybe not really good): Instead of cp'ing the Spamcop TF filters from the FAQ page, imagine there would be a button labeled TF create SpamCop filters. My mother (who loves TB but has no idea TF about templates, macros, or regexes) could use it. ;-) Example not good. g I see your point but I don't see where it's needed here. I assure you that users would remain confused considering what these templates can do. If they're confused with the current implementation then they'll remain confused with other methods. I think what has happened is that the list is so mature, that regex macros are being spoken of and passed around as if it's a trivial matter to create them and that everyone should be able to do it with little effort, and if this isn't so, then blame the interface. Re: tmp files left by TB!
Hi Nick, On Tue, 18 Jun 2002 21:38:41 -0700, you wrote: Do a regular clean up ;) You're kidding... right? Automate it if you want :P To be honest, this isn't really TB! fault... Oh, but it is. Depends on your standpoint... from what I've experience with the software we write, most anti-virus applications have a habbit of locking a file just before the file gets read, moved, copied, or deleted. Now when TB goes to delete the file, the anti-virus program locks the file, so TB gets a flag saying file busy, I'm sure the coders may have added in a try statement to attempt to do it 3 times... depending on the system, and setup, this may fail several times, so TB fails the delete, hence you end up with temp files. As for why there aren't always temp files, if your virus scanner releases the lock before TB tries to do anything with the file, then TB can happily remove it... it's a question of timing. We've found in 99% of the cases where files have been reported as locked (we develop accounting software), disabling the virus scanner for a 10 minute test shows the lock issue vanishes. In theory, it may not even be with the temporary file itself... it may be with the temporary file's lock file (which is where our software has issues, the database lock file isn't removed because the anti-virus software has a lock on the lock file... when the database attempts to remove the lock, it cannot... so fails trying without error, but when you next attempt to access the file, the original lock file is still there, and the table is still open). Then there is the other standpoint which says it is TB! fault... saying it didn't attempt to delete it enough times... If the programmers of TB were to force TB to make X number of attempts more at deleting the file, you could end up stuck in a nasty loop of delays, eventually slowing the system down. -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/
