OAUTH Grayed Out
Title: OAUTH Grayed Out Hello TBUDL, I decided to finally upgrade to ver.9 today. So far, I like it a lot. However, my Yahoo account stopped being able to login. I believe it is because Yahoo has instituted a strict OAUTH policy. So, I went to 'Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Receive mail -> Authentication ' to change the authentication method from 'Regular' to 'OAUTH using Web Browser', but OAUTH is grayed out and not selectable. I then switched to my Yandex account properties and OAUTH is also grayed out as well. In fact all the accounts I have in The Bat! have OAUTH grayed out. Is there something I must do to enable OAUTH? So far I have restarted The Bat! and rebooted the system, but to no avail. Any suggestions? In fact, encapsulation thanks to (D)COM and object-orientation have (in my experience) only "muddied the waters", because of the replacement of low-level error messages with other error messages in the outer encapsulation layers. The fact is that like writing documentation, error handling does not pay the bills for software companies and very few are willing to trade on the intangibles like: good will, good customer education and so on; potentially created by good documentation and error handling efforts. Hi Jack, JSL> Hello TBUDL'ers, JSL> My wife tried to attach an .MP4 video (which resided on her desktop) to a new JSL> email and received an "out of memory" error. I had her close then re-start TB! JSL> but the same thing happened again. Any ideas why this would be happening? Ok, what you'll need to do is find the Outbox directory used by TB on your local machine. It should contain two files, a Message.TBB and a "Message" file with either a TBI or a TBN extension. (You might want to enable the display of file extensions for this, because Windows deactivates the display of extensions by default, under the assumption that users are too dumb to understand the meaning of file extensions.) The TBB file(s) are the mail database(s). The TBI or TBN file(s) are the index files. I would suggest renaming the TBI or TBN file, say from "Message.TBN" to "OldMessage.TBN". (Essentially, save the file just in case you need to put it back, right?) Then, start TB. When it finds that the Message.TBI/TBN file is missing, that should trigger a re-index process. I would also recommend against sending anything from the Desktop. It is not a real directory per se. It is a virtual directory that is attached under the directory used by Windows for user accounts (as are all of the "My..." directories). User account directories are specially protected against user intervention/"interference". That special protection may have interfered with the process of encoding the MP4 for transmission. It's better to place files in directories that have been created by the user (directly under the drive partition, such as a D:\Upload directory). -- Thanks, David Using The Bat! v7.3.6 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

JSL> but the same thing happened again. Any ideas why this would be happening? My guess is that the size of the file is not the problem. Therefore recommendations for external programs, apps and websites will not help. Instead, the problem is that the indices used by TheBat have become corrupted and TB needs to be told to re-create them. As long as the corrupted index files exist, it will spit out the out of memory error upon start up. I'm not sure if there is a flag that can be set using the command line, when starting TB from the command line, or if one or more of the files in your directory structure will have to be deleted (to force the corresponding mail database to be re-indexed). Fortunately, TB keeps the indices external to the mail databases...I just don't know which extension those index files use. My recommendation is to wait for someone with such knowledge to respond and I hope this message has gotten the conversation going in the direction of a real solution. Hopefully, you know your own directory structure well enough to know which directory contains the Outbox or Sent directory with the corrupted index. -- Thanks, David Using The Bat! v7.3.6 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Upgrade process TB v. 3.85.03 to TB v. 7.3.6
Hi All, I've been using TB 3.85.03 for years and been fairly happy with it. However, one of my providers has switched to using SSL, which doesn't seem to be an option in this version of TB. So, I've purchased the upgrade to the current version (7-3-6). The question is how to do the upgrade. Will a 4-version jump still understand the old message bases, address books, filter/rule settings, etc.? Is there an export/import or backup/restore process that might prove a better approach to doing the upgrade? As long as I'm looking at this issue, I'll raise a second issue. When I setup the original installation, I missed the option to store attachments in a separate folder, so attachments are being stored in the message bases. Especially if I need to do an additional import/export/backup/restore, it might be time to change that setting and get the attachments into one or more external folders. Are there suggestions for accomplishing that? -- TIA, David Windows XP.5.1.2600 TheBat 3.85.03 Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Update TheBat to v.6.6 or higher. They work and cause no trouble. For me it costs money for the upgrade: 19,95 Eur for the Home version, 29,95 Eur for the pro version (both plus taxes) 2. Use a different Email-client like Thunderbird which costs 0 Eur. I have not decided yet what I will do. OTOH if that crash does not get fixed, it would be a 40 Eur for a single "bugfix", because the current version I have, 5.x, does all I need and want concerning functionality. I think I will take a look at Thunderbird and all its functions and plugins whether they can compete with TheBat concerning filters, address books, postbox inspector and templates. There are a number of things that can go wrong, and it's typically a problem with the hosting provider. I don't recall you saying you had upgraded TB! or changed any settings, in fact, you said "starting Tuesday evening, for no apparent reason, I cannot SEND mail from the accounts with the private domains" so that tells me something changed somewhere else. Ocassionally, I do have issues with my provider, either because they're having system issues (hardware issues, a patch that went bad, problem with their network connection, etc.) or they changed settings on their systems such that the way I've been sending and receiving email no longer works. The former they will usually communicate through their status site or in the support section, the latter I usually just have to work out on my own (though I could probably contact support if needed). So yes, things can suddenly stop working, but it's rarely a problem with a client, particularly if nothing changed about the client. I don't know how 1&1 works, so I'll use my own hosting provider as an example. When it comes to sending and receiving mail, I can do it through an address like: mail.somehost.com for both SMTP and POP3. Because this is shared hosting, I can also go to my exact server, myserver.mail.somehost.com and that seems to make things work a little more smoothly when it comes to secure connections. Re: IMAP Worthless in TB
Hi Tim, TH Hello Tbudl, TH IMAP is worthless and extremely buggy on TB when trying to access TH gamail. The connection window freezes when checking google and TB TH freezes as well. Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I could TH use POP in checking gmail. Let me take a stab in the dark. This sounds like a problem that I had with a POP3 account many years ago. As part of the login process, one particular provider was sending a DNS request. Due to problems (or fears) about ?BackOrifice?, the firewall had been set to block port 53 by default. The result looked very much like a continuous loop (TheBat attempted to fetch email from that provider and hung). After reading the firewall logs (and setting it to report all denied traffic, heh-heh-heh), the solution was to open port 53 for that provider's IP address in combination with TheBat's MD5. I'm not sure if that helps with your problem, but hope springs eternal. -- Sincerely, David Win][k sp4 TheBat 3.85.03 Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Controlling the length of quoted text in replies
Hallo I have now worked my way through copying templates and am having problems with quoted text in replies. I am working in html. My design has my address and graphics down the right hand side and my text alongside. Both are set up in a table. The problem I have is that I cannot find a way to control the wrap point of the quoted text, and so it breaks the table putting my address etc. on the left below the quoted and looks a mess. Changing the line length in preferences has no effect and cannot see any other setting there that might apply. I am using the F4 method on selected text and have change the template that is called to mirror my format. I tried putting the incoming to text only but that muddles their format so that the address and other details mixed in. Is there any other way to control this text please. The actual template consists of a table with various pieces of text logo put into the various cells. One cell only (this is a cell within cell) is used for the message body. Now if I select the whole template only the text in the cells is selected. Now select a new QT and the text is put in unformatted left aligned. Now where does the %qinclude My Template go? If I put it in the original it just appears as text saying it cannot be found. This is putting at the top of the main body of text and it would just refer to itself. But similarly if I put it in the template I am creating it just shows Cannot find a quick template My Template , but the text is not formatted nor is the table created. If I create a new QT and just put in %qinclude My Template the same happens. I think I am putting in the %qinclude My Template in the wrong place but have run out of options. Any more guidance please? Regards David -- - Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I was trying to point out here that a handle is best without spaces. I asked about that and you said it made no difference D At the top of this template I place %qinclude MyTemplate As others have said you can put %qinclude=MyTemplate or %qinclude(MyTemplate) but NOT %qinclude MyTemplate. Now the reason for that was it was that way in an earlier post from you as below Now go back to the original template. If your Quick Template was (for example) labelled with a tag of MyQT1 then replace the entire template with a single line that reads: %qinclude MyQT1 In this way, you can set up as many templates or bits of templates as you wish and pull them into a real template with the %qinclude macro. ~~ Ok - no worries about that. Now that I have corrected it, it works. And thanks to those who also pointed it out. As an addendum, there is no need to copy the text across first since it is all copied with the macro, you do however need to set the new template to hmtl to get the structure of the table across and everything in the right place. I have found that playing around with these templates that The Bat has crashed 5 or more times over the last couple of days - is this usual. Thanks Marck for your patience in sticking with this. This year may be different since V5 is based on a completely rewritten code-set, with the particular aim of much better IMAP support. The result is a Bat with a lot of new bugs, which RITlabs will work very hard to clear up before the 25th, but some of these have persisted from the Alpha version. So usually, I would say it categorically - by the 25th. This year, I'm not so certain. Sorry to be so vague, but there have been several times in the long Bat history (I've been a user for 12+ years) that RITlabs have forced a version out because of a deadline date and not becuase software testing was complete and bugs were cleared. This has caused a lot of discontent and, these days, they are more keen on making a release when a decent level of stability has been acheived. Thanks Marck for the update. Having been involved in beta testing I know of the pressures on both sides - one to get it right and the other to develop the income stream. Re: Creating a template to replicate the company letter heading
Thanks - got that I am now having problems with the table design. Because of the design I am creating individual tables 1 row x 2 columns. That mostly allows me to treat the tables differently. However on the centre table that has the address and other details on the right column and the message area on the left. I want to just have a border on this cell alone but it seems it is not possible to do this. Tried putting single cell table side by side but they go on separate lines. Any ideas please Regards, David Thanks Rick I think I am finding my through it - maybe Found out that if you set the QT to html then you can insert a graphic and right set it. I was trying to paste it before. Then inserted a table (2 unequal columns) so that I could put the company details in the right column. I then have the left column for the text entry setting the text start at the top. That part will then automatically expand when you type. I sent an email to myself and it seems to work. That is as far as I have got. Haven't yet discovered if you can make the column borders invisible. Right click the table and choose table properties, then set the border AND the cell border to 0. It will be a light gray for editing purposes. Current version is 4.2.23 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Using the %issignature tag in a Quick Template makes the QT invocation replace any current signature with the newly invoked one while the cursor remains in place for continued editing. Thanks for that. I could not find %qinclude anywhere in the drop down lists. One word though, and here the moderator hat gets put on... you're not using a cut mark to delineate your signature and without that, the %issignature macro doesn't work. From searching through this list it would seem not to be possible but would appreciate some advice in case I have missed something. Is it possible to import a template from Outlook? Can't import a template but you CAN make one. First decide where you want to create it your choices are and address book entry, an address book GROUP entry, a folder (careful with that one), or an account. In the address books there are tabs for the different templates, in the accounts and folders they are under Properties The FIRST thing you will do is change the message (template) type to HTML. THEN the icons will appear to bold, highlight, add a picture (it links, so keep it in a permanent place) One BUG in the program - if you use any of the items in the HTML menu drop down, you can't use another without leaving the template and coming back. Hello tbudl, For many years I have shared TheBat across several computers on a small domestic network by installing a separate copy on each computer. I then set up appropriate accounts on each machine for all of the users who wanted to see each other users' email traffic in addition to their own. The home directory for all of the accounts accounts is a shared MAIL directory on one machine on the network. Having upgraded to Version 4, I installed this on one of the machines and found to my dismay that after using the new system in an experimental mode, the directories became horribly corrupted. This was only fixed by copying back the corrupted files from a backup. Is this problem due to an enhanced security feature in version 4? If so, is there any way of setting up the system using Version 4 to give me the same type of functionality that I enjoyed previously? Hello MAU, Wednesday, March 12, 2008, 7:18:03 PM, you wrote: How do I fix the size of the name column in Folder Tree. You can either place the mouse cursor on the line that divides the Name column and the one to its right and then drag this line to the desired size, or you can right click on column names (labels) and select width there. Yep I can do that, well both. As I go up and down the folder tree it expands and I thought that I could switch this behaviour off I have actually never seen the behaviour you describe, I set my column widths years ago and they never change unless I do it as described above. That is the point I am a big key board used and don't use the mouse. When I the cursor keys to move up and down the tree it gets really annoying that the other columns disappear off the right. P.S. gMail and this list (May be OT)
Hello Tbudl, This may be OT, but it is to do with this (and other) list/s. I am using gMail via POP3 SMPT and I am not see my own e-mail being returned to this list. I think that it is a property of gMail as I can see it in sent items in the web interface. I know that gMail will not show your email in the inbox if you sent it to a list. I was hoping that would not apply to POP3 and SMTP. I have looked at the filter in gMail but can not see one to override this behaviour. I could set up filters for my out box but I don't really want to have to do that. My other option is to use a different SMTP server to sent it out. Turas mór %Qinclude='subclean' %Qinclude='TNoL' %SetHeader('X-Rogue',':Dave_Calvarese:')% %SetHeader(User-agent,TB/%THEBATVERSION (by RITlabs))%- NoLW just does the On date Person on Mailing List wrote line. and TNoL does the to line as Name on List. subclean cleans up the subject line. -- David Cá fhad é ó an tús go deireadh? Default outbox for common folders?
Hi All, Is there a way to determine the default outbox/account for Common Folders? The Reply header info is correctly set, however, the eMail consistently lands in the outbox of the first account created for TheBat. Details: The tree looks like @///GMX Inbox Outbox @///Strato Inbox Outbox ///CommonFolder Sub-Folder1 Sorting office correctly sorts the eMail into Sub-Folder1. I write a reply, and the Reply-To From header fields are set to the info for the Strato account, however, the Reply lands in ///GMX/Outbox. For some reason ;, GMX doesn't want to let the eMail go through and I have to manually move the reply over to ///Strato/Outbox to send it. I'm thinking that I've missed a setting somewhere, but perhaps I have to re-arrange my folders or create an outgoing rule to filter the reply over to the ///Strato/Outbox. -- TIA, David Win][k sp4 TheBat 3.0 Current version is 3.85.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Lists that don't overwrite the Reply-To header
Hi Chris, CW Is there some functionality of The Bat! that will help me when it CW comes to mailing lists that don't replace the reply-to header with the CW list's address? CW Is there some sort of options that can be toggled or a template that CW can be used. CW If I remember correctly, pine (a CLI-based IMAP client) would ask me CW whether I wanted to reply to the sender or the list. One thing I've done is to include the Reply-To: field in the headers, so that I can edit it when creating a reply. I set this by right-clicking in the headers area. That shows a context menu, listing the various headers with a check mark for what should be visible. That's so manual, I doubt it's what you're looking for 8/ I'm uncertain if this helps, since its more focused on ListServs/groups than mailing lists.? Things which can be separated by filters. I've created a folder called ListServs. I think its a Common Folder; its at the same hierarchy level as the Inboxes, not under them. Then, I have folders under ListServs for each group and filters, which sort the messages into those folders, right? So I've got like: \\\ListServs \\\ListServs\TheBat \\\ListServs\EurForum etc. Each of those folders has their own Properties dialog, with an Identity tab. And that's the trick I'm using. I set the Reply-To info for the folder/ListServ/Group from the Identities tab on a per-group basis. Not sure how that will interact with the various templates. -- HTH, David Win][k sp4 TheBat 3.0 Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Exception errors
Hello Fellow TheBat users, I'm experiencing an increasing frequency of External Exception errors (code C06 appears) (about 10 times a day) which then give rise to a variety of outcomes: 1. The Bat appears to function (you can open folders etc.) but cannot send anything, and the error message reappears after each keystroke. 2. The program freezes and can only be closed using Windows Task manager or sometimes only by rebooting 3. The program just closes This problem has only manifested itself during the past 3 weeks or so, with increasing frequency. Nothing much has changed apart from installing some antispam plugins (see more details below) Conditions. The problem frequently manifests when attempting to send an email but also randomly. We are running a copy of the Bat Professional on a peer to peer server under Windows XP SP2, with four people on other machines sharing this with their own accounts. This arrangement has functioned with no previous problems since we moved to the Bat 2 years ago. The total size of the message archive is about 11,000 messages. We are using the current release version of the Bat. Things I have tried: Reinstalling the current version of the Bat-had no effect Plugins I have been experimenting with antispam plugins, first Agava and then Antispam Sniper, following recommendations in this forum. When the problems started, I first uninstalled the plugins completely, but the problems continued. I then reinstalled Sniper in the local machine directory instead of the Server. Problem remained the same. I also have the Google desktop indexing plugin installed. I have not yet tried uninstalling this. Should I try this? The only option I have not tried is installing the most recent beta version of the Bat. Would this be worth a try? Any other ideas? -- Best regards, David mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Best regards, David mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Sharing Bat Accounts accross an XP network
Hello Roelof, On Sat, 8 Jul 2006 18:32:50 +0200 GMT (08/07/2006, 23:32 +0700 GMT), Roelof Otten wrote: RO I'm afraid the only way to (real time) share messages between multiple RO instances of TB is by using IMAP accounts. That means that either your RO ISP should support IMAP (with simultaneous logins enabled) or you RO should install your own IMAP server on your LAN. No, that's not the only way. We share messages using POP: Each computer will leave messages on the server, so each computer will download all incoming messages. In order for everybody to also receive the messages sent, there are two possibilities: 1.) Everybody sends their messages by BCC to the From address as well. (This is what we used to do.) 2.) The server will copy all outgoing messages to the Inbox on server. (This is what we do now, a feature of Merak mail server.) A simple solution that we have used for years is to have a single The Bat .exe on a server on the network. There is a short cut on each machine wishing to share that points to this .exe. When this shortcut is first invoked on a non-server, you are prompted to go through the usual process of registering the program and opening your own account. Each shared user creates the accounts that they want to share on their own machine on the network using Account/New and then using the existing account names if they are already present on another machine. This allows everybody to see any other account that they wish, which suits our (open, non-corporate) way of working. The actual downloading of mail is usually done by each account holder on his/her machine. This avoids duplicates, but in any case, these can easily be deleted using Folder/Delete. There's no need to create any extra directories. All of the individual user directories are held in the mail directory on the machine which holds the single Bat .exe Regards David Embrey Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Putting a reply into the same folder where the original message is stored?
Hello Maksym, There might well be a more sophisticated method. BUT if the recipients are filtered into their folders using filters based on the sender, then your replies can be filtered into the same folder using a filter with the recipient providing the condition for the filter. If [EMAIL PROTECTED] is filtered into a folder when they send you an email, you can add an OR condition that filters mails from you to the same folder when a.recipient is the recipient of the message sent from you. Hope this is clear. A reminder of what Maksym Kozub typed on: 03 March 2006 at 18:39:59 GMT + MK I have a number of 'per recipient' mail folders in The Bat! (e.g. each MK customer has his very own folder assigned). I'd like to get my replies MK to those people saved automatically to the respective folders rather MK then to my Sent folder. (It's more convenient for me to see MK correspondence with a customer in one thread, etc.) Is there any way MK (maybe using macros?) to get it done that way? -- Best regards,David. In case you're running Win XP, RO does it help when you restore a restore point? I changed nothing - the errors just started happening. And I'm running WinME (ARGHH). Though for some reason, today, I'm not getting any of these errors and it seems to have self-corrected. RO I haven't got any clue what error messages you're getting, so I'm RO absolute clueless about their meaning. So copy and paste your RO error messages into a message, so that we can see them. The error message came up in a little window and all it said was Error: Unable to insert a line with an okay button to click. I wonder if one of the emails on my server could have been causing a problem? It would have gotten deleted this morning in the daily purge of emails (which I leave on the server for a day after I download). Or maybe not. Bloody weird, whatever it is, and today everything has been working perfectly. Thanks for answering! All of a sudden getting Unable to insert a line error messages
Using version 2.12.00 The Bat! been working perfectly since forever; and now, all of a sudden tonight, it gives me the error windows - it seems to fire up one error message when my connection center fires up, and then I get two when the connection center closes, whether I have new email or not. I rebooted the computer, and am still getting the same problem. Any idea what's happening? Any idea what that error message even means? Is it time to bite the bullet and move into version 3?
