Scheduling Backups

2007-09-27 Thread Michael Rudnick
I have set up the Scheduler to backup at 6:15pm every day. The scheduler
seems to have a mind of it's own, though. For instance, it just performed a
backup (at ~9am).

Any suggestions on how to keep the scheduler working according to the time
I have specified?

M Hello Michael,

incoming mail for some time with good success. My goal is to have mail from

 done with it.

M What you want to do is similar to the set up I have.

M - I have addresses for what you call 'common people' in my address book
M and they all belong to a same Group.

M - I have an Incoming filter that checks if Sender belongs to Group and,
M if so, the message is moved to a folder that I called 'My Inbox'.

M - In Account/Properties/Options I have disabled (deselected) the 'Mark
M message as read when it has been read for..' so that messages are NOT
M marked as read after N seconds. I want to decide when I am _done_ with a
M message and I manually mark them as read with Ctrl+M (Actually, I have
M customised this to use Space).

M - It is this manually marking as read what triggers Read filters, and I
M basically have two, both of them only looking (applying) to My Inbox
M folder:
MFilter 1.- If the message IS flagged, the message is moved to an
M'Action-Reply' folder. (This way, if I want to reply later or take
Mfurther action, I flag the message before marking it as Read).
MFilter 2.- This filter will only trigger if 1 hasn't but, anyway, it
Mchecks if the message is NOT flagged and then moves the message to
Mfolder '\\Account\Group\%ABFromName'.

M - I then have a Replied filter that similarly to Read filter 2, looks
M only to folder 'Action-Reply' and moves the replied message to
M '\\Account\Group\%ABFromName'. This one, together with an Outgoing
M filter that checks if Address groups. Group contain first recipient,
M move both the message I have just replied to and my own reply to folder
M '\\Account\Group\%ABFromName'.

M HTH. But if something is not clear enough or you need more detail,
M please ask.

So now I have a few questions for the experts!

 - If 'Manual' is not selected, when is mail filtered in a folder?

M AFAIK, when manually marking it as read.

 - Will mail filter out of any folder? If so, I guess I can use a
condition to only filter out of the Inbox.

M Read and Replied filters have an extra 'Folders' tab where you can
M select if the filter applies to 'Any folder' or just to one or more
M folders.

 - I put a button on the toolbar to refilter. It's now 3 clicks to filter a
folder (Refilter button, OK, Close). Is there any way to have the
refilter process run without as much interaction (fewer clicks)?

M Not that I know of. But I think you don't really need to use
M 'Re-filter'.

I just flagged your message. I'll have to look at a bit more thoroughly
when I have a chance. I'm going to take your ideas and let the read filters
work automatically. Just need a few minutes to wrap my mind around this.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may write back when I'm actually implementing
this.

I'm experimenting with using filters for read messages. I've been filtering

I started with people who I often receive mail from. I set up a few filters

I'm not aware of. Sometimes I had read the message but wasn't done with it.
I then had to hunt down the message and process it. Since then I turned all
the filters to manual, to make sure that I choose when to filter the mail.

So now I have a few questions for the experts!

The toolbar creation interface has clearly been dumbed down. I'm a bit

Not sure why they removed this feature. It's still there, just not

M If I understand what you want, do this:

M - Click 'Create new Toolbar' button, not _container_, give it a name and,

M - Select the new toolbar. In Actions, select the one you want to be the

M - Select this first (default) action in layout and in Actions window
M select and shift+insert the action you want to be the first in your
M drop down list.
M - You can now add (insert) more actions in the drop down list. If in
M Layout you select one of the second level (drop down) actions you can
M now just insert (without shift) a new action below it. You only need to
M shift+insert if the top level (default) action is selected.

Why is this so confusing (Shift+insert)? If there is this type of

PM Create a complete backup of your desktop TB!. When Voyager is

AD Voyager is a stand-alone email client. I got bit by that, too. It's
AD not meant to be TB when you're away, it's really a separate mailbase.
AD So, when I bought TB! to use at work, I just started using Voyager for

AD Don't let the sync options in the menus fool you -- they don't work
AD (so says Ritlabs support). Or, they're really not for syncing between
AD TB! and Voyager, anyway.

Okay, that makes sense. I'll just use it to look at mail in a familiar
interface. It's easy enough to turn off the deleting from the server and I
can send a bcc of my sent messages to myself.

It's a shame there isn't much in the way of documentation. It also would be
nice to have *some* kind of syncing. It's almost, but not quite, ready.

TF Alternatively, hit F7.

I know the Search function. Based on your comments above, I created a

TF See whether you find the Search function I mean. And you can change the

I finally figured this out. Previously I had created View Modes. I created
a filter on the View Mode and used that View Mode for a tab. I guess that
this is an alternative to the Virtual Folder approach that you showed me.

This again confirms the power of TB. Unfortunately, the power doesn't
always come with training wheels.

Thanks for helping me review this.

Error on Exit with 3.62.14

2005-11-15 Thread Michael Rudnick

has been resolved. It hasn't.

The problem I get is that whenever I exit (in 3.62.08, 3.62.09 and

essentially the same as the earlier versions:

Access violation at address 00B47126 in module 'thebat.exe' Read of
  address 000C.

The only difference in the error message is the first address.

I have removed BayesIt! to see if that was a problem. I turned of
compressing of folders. I even tested to see if there was a conflict
with an existing program by booting in safe mode and opening the
program there. I still get the error.

I assume that others aren't getting this error, yet I continue to have
the problem. I'm OK with 3.60 but not with succeeding versions.

Any suggestions?

I've noticed a difference in the way TB works with HTML in the latest
version. I've been getting more and more frustrated by the way it
handled replies. I would have to reformat the paragraphs of the
e-mails from my assistant whenever she sent me bulleted items (in OE).
Now when replying it pops me into HTML when the sender uses HTML. The
formatting is good (but not perfect). If I switch it to Plain text
it's the same old messed up text.

I've added a custom toolbar that has the different message formats.
That way if I want to reply in plain text (as I do most of the time) I
can just press a button to change it. If I want to leave it as HTML to
preserve the formatting I don't have to do anything.

Interesting that this improvement isn't touted in the upgrade notes.

3.5 Frustration

2005-05-16 Thread Michael Rudnick
I want to register my frustration with the 3.5 upgrade.

All of the shortcuts were lost. I had to recreate the ones that I
had put into the previous version. There was no warning of this.

Some keyboard shortcuts are changed. I used to press CtrlEnter
to put the message in the Outbox. Now that same command sends the
message immediately. Maybe a minor change but an unsettling one.

The customization is nice but a bit daunting. I created a toolbar
and found myself looking everywhere to see the appropriate icons.
It's nice to have choices but it would be nicer to have them
arranged in a manner that made sense to the novice.

One bug (I think). I can't seem to create a toolbar and use the
'Insert item as a child' command. I get an error and am kicked out
of TheBat. Can anyone confirm this or tell me what I'm doing wrong?
(I was trying to duplicate the appearance of the first two Standard
  toolbar buttons.)

None of this is critical. What it does illustrate for me is that
TheBat is a niche product with a loyal following. I can't see it
becoming a mainstream product when things like this occur.

Thanks for listening to my Monday morning rant.

The program is not disconnected from it's data. I am using Windows XP

Yes, it does compress. After the compress (when a dialog box is
plainly showing) the program 'appears' to close. But, upon looking at
the Task Manager, there is still a process, 'thebat.exe'. That process
remains for about 2 minutes, using CPU cycles.

MR Another point: Whenever I open TheBat! (in either situation listed

S No, this is probably normal, but your habit of disconnecting from the
S message bases will eventually cause message base corruption (or
S worse).

S Let TB! finish its housekeeping before disconnecting from the server
S and hence the message bases. I have seen this before on a client's
S machine.

I typically don't close out of the network before TB closes. What I
have to do now is wait 2 minutes after TB closes so that it's really
out of the active processes. This is sometimes a pain.

S Anyone else have another explanation??

Yes, anyone else

Thanks.

Another alternative is to use the runas command. Runas allows you to
run any program as another user, without the logoff/logon. It's
relatively simple:

  runas /user:mydomain\user notepad.exe

  runas /user:user notepad.exe

Having Trouble Closing TheBat - 2nd Request

2004-10-03 Thread Michael Rudnick
I posted the message below a few days ago and didn't receive a reply.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I have been having trouble closing out TheBat. Sometimes when closing
it I get a Windows (XP) message that the program closed improperly.
Other times when I am shutting down the computer I notice that TheBat
is still running, even though I closed the program.

I did a little checking and noticed that sometimes after I close the
program it still shows up in the Task Manager. If I click on the icon
again, the computer chuggs for a bit and then the task ends. If I
click on the icon at this point, the program starts up.

Any idea as to what is happening here?

Connection Centre Lock-ups

2004-05-13 Thread Michael Rudnick
I upgraded to 2.10 and have occasionally had TheBat! lock up on me. In the
most recent situation (and I suspect all the others) the main window was
visible and I could minimize and restore it with no problem while the
Connection Centre was blank. In the Task Manager TheBat! and Connection
Centre each appeared twice. I ended the Connection Centre. It closed
TheBat! and after restarting it, it's fine.

This behavior has occurred several times. It's when I start up TheBat!. The
second time I run it all is fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

T That's the same as the previous version. Here is where the behaviour

T In all other versions (at least the ones I've had), I could scroll

T That doesn't work anymore. I can still scroll without physically

T text, the message in that window moves back up to the beginning of the
T message and text is selected from the point where I tried to click in
T the message back up to the bottom line that's now displayed in the
T preview pane. For example, if 10 lines display at a time in the
T preview pane and I scroll down a few screens and then try to click on
T a link that is on line 40, the message scrolls itself back up so the
T first 10 lines are displayed again and the lines from 10 to 40 are
T selected.

T If I physically select the preview pane by clicking inside of it prior
T to scrolling, I can then select text or click a link as normal.

T Is anyone else experiencing this? Am I missing some setting somewhere

Spam Filter - Not Spam

2004-03-09 Thread Michael Rudnick
I've been using the BayesIT! Spam filter for over a week, long enough
to tag quite a few messages as Spam and several as Not Spam. I'm still
having a problem with one set of messages.

I support several servers. That includes getting messages from the
server notifying that a virus was found. I currently have a filter
that moves the message to the appropriate folder. The message from one
of my clients continues to be marked as Spam. Here's the log message
from one of them:

3/9/2004, 08:14:57: FILTER - Message from Administrator to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with subject [MailServer Notification]To
Administrator virus found and action taken. scored 91, qualified as
  JUNK MAIL

I keep on marking these messages as NOT Spam (I've been getting quite
a few of them lately) but they are still going into the Junk folder.
Any suggestions on eliminating this problem?

Thanks.

BayesIt Spam Plugin

2004-03-02 Thread Michael Rudnick
When I upgraded to the latest version of TheBat! I decided to
experiment with the new spam plug in. I don't have a great need for it
due to a number of message filters that I have tweaked over time.
Before I pull it out in frustration, I thought I would post a question
or two.

I don't see any way to customize the plugin. I went to the
configuration screen and wasn't able to add anything to the whitelist
or blacklist. (Choosing 'Add rule' did nothing.) I ran the Training
(even though it said obsolete) to see if that would help. I went to
the website (http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesiteng.htm) but didn't
find it helpful for tweaking the plugin.

My problem is that some valid messages are going into the Junk folder.
For example, I get messages from a client's server about viruses. I
have those messages going into a folder that I review on a regular
basis. BayseIt insists on putting them into Junk, even though I have
marked them as 'Not junk'. I have fiddled with the scoring (moved it
from 60 to 40) and that might have helped; I'm still not sure.

Is there anything else I can do to customize the plugin for my
specific needs?

Thanks.

Marck,

Yes, I know about moving the cursor to the body.

Can anyone else confirm that this is a bug. Should I report this? If
so, how.

Thanks.

Group Templates

2002-07-17 Thread Michael Rudnick

I have a group with group specific templates for new messages. If I'm
in the Address Book and select a new message for the group, the
correct template comes up. If I start a new message from the main
screen and enter the group handle, the standard template stays. If I
start a new message from the main screen and enter a specific name
from the group, the correct template is inserted.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Re:Stuck Messages

2002-07-05 Thread Michael Rudnick

Jonathan,

Thanks for your comments and from others as well.

Since this has occurred several times I have some information on the
problem. I can't yet see a pattern but here's what I know so far:
- The Bat! gets stuck downloading a message. I note the message
  number.
- I open a browser and go into my mailbox via the web.
- I find the message and look at it. Usually there is nothing special
about it. I can read it fine. On several occasions it has been from
  this group.
- I go into the dispatcher and delete the offending message.

I guess I could try to download the message in Outlook Express, which
I still have on my system. If it worked though, what would that tell
me? I already know that the message is OK. I assume that since others
aren't noticing this happening regularly then it's not a major bug.
I'm happy to do a little more research on this if someone knows what I
should do with the results.

Cheers,

Re:Stuck Messages

Roelof,

Unlikely. It's a DSL line. Additionally, If I try to download again,
it gets stuck on the same message each time. Finally, I only started
having this problem recently. It might be when I went to 1.60q or
1.60m or maybe 1.60c. I can't remember.

Stuck Messages

2002-06-30 Thread Michael Rudnick

I'm having occasional problems with messages not being read by The
Bat! The log message is:
6/30/2002, 21:24:55: FETCH - Connection to host broken (last
commands sent were: LIST, RETR 1)

When I go to my mail server (I can access my mail through the web) the
message looks fine. The latest message that had a problem was from
Marck Pearlstone: How to set up an autocomplete for a mail list?

Often the mail goes through just fine. I'm not sure exactly how often
the problem occurs, maybe 1-2 times a week.

Any suggestions on where the problem may lie or anything I can do
about it?

Thanks.

Re:Palm Sync Sloooow

2002-01-17 Thread Michael Rudnick

Start by reading the info on TB FAQ
(http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/howdoi.html. Then go to How to
sync The Bat! with your Palm device (by Tim Musson)) I set the Palm
mail conduit to Eudora. Note: Some Palms (the less expensive ones)
didn't include a mail program. If you don't have Mail on your Palm
you'll need a 3rd party program.

Palm Sync Sloooow

2002-01-16 Thread Michael Rudnick

I have been using TB for several months and have been syncing
successfully to my Palm. But I've it's very slow when syncing. The
slowness is fully dependant on the size of the Inbox, which makes some
sense. But the mail sync is an average of 10 seconds per message (or
around 1 minute for a mere 6 messages in my Inbox). I never had that
problem with Outlook Express (but experienced other problems g).

I've gone through the settings and reviewed Tim Musson's entries in
the Silverstones FAQ. All seems to be OK. Is anyone else having this
problem? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
