Without any suggestions for a working reply template, what would the prescribed

My main account is an IMAP mirror of my gmail account.

If I reply to any email in that account, while I am composing the message the

BUT once the message is actually sent, no matter what address was in the FROM

Updating from 2.12 templates

2017-10-06 Thread Rich Gregory
Hello TBUDL,

Moving to this new TB! from v 2.12.

I'll need help tweaking templates as my old install had some QTs that
I cannot find a way to move over as well, so recreating some of that
functionality will most likely have to be moved to regular templates I
assume.

For example, (not even knowing if the question makes sense w/o seeing
the old QTs) how would this translate:

%if:'%ABToHandle'<>'%ABToFirstName':'%ABToHandle':'%ABToFirstName'":"%ABToFirstName"+)

Thanks folks.

Seeking hints on using 2 proxies

2008-01-23 Thread rich gregory
Hello Bat-Folk!

Assuming it can be done... (I'm sure it can!)

I now have TB! (v2.12) set to use SpamPal as a 127.0.0.1 RECEIVE proxy.

I now also need to use X-Ray, which also wants to situate itself in the
proxy role, to strip a RETURN-PATH from certain outgoing messages (which
I understand TB! cannot do).

I am sure someone out there has done/is doing this (or something like
it) and can convey some wisdom as to setup considerations!

As always, thx all

Re[2]: v2.12 forward filter change FROM address

RO The order of preference is AB template, AB group template, folder
RO template, account template. Note that when you've got multiple
RO entries in your AB with the same address the preference can get
RO mixed up.
RO QTs and external text files can be called by other templates, doesn't
RO matter whether the parent templates are account templates, AB
RO templates, filter templates or even quick templates.
RO You can use any macro in all kind of templates.
RO ... be carefull with fireworks!

Thanks for that... Then just to be sure I understand...

1- AB contact template will overwrite ANY template
2- Folder templates ONLY overwrite account templates
3- QTs or external text files share the hierarchical order of the
template from which it is executed

P.S. I won't think about sending a message via command line parameters!

2007-12-30 Thread rich gregory
RG I'd seen templates mentioned before in filters but assumed (duh) that
RG they must be folder or account profile templates.

[EDITED]
RO TB offers templates on lots of places.
RO Account, folder, filter, address book (entry), address book (group),
RO external text file. Also see Quick Templates.

I suppose some template hierarchy exists where one template will
over-ride another template in a predictable order? Is this so? I guess
it must be in the order in which they are executed... What would that
be?

If I understand external text file template, any executed are nested
within another more powerful template... Yes?

Also, to my understanding QTs differ in that they just dump text into
the body of an email being composed. No?

Thank yet again (for the great lessons I should have learned years ago)

Nope, My Documents being on a mapped network drive doesn't matter. I
have a new PC with all newly installed apps (including TB!) all
conventionally installed on a single PC (no network required for any
application) and trying to create that filter does the same thing again!

Create an OUTGOING rule and the rule says source folder = outbox.
Close sorting office and reopen sorting office, now source folders say
source folder = inbox!

simplifying it to as RA suggests), the next line is:

New mail virtual folder in v 2.12

2007-08-02 Thread rich gregory
Hello Bat-Folk!

Odd behavior I'm just noticing...

The VF All New Mail drops messages that are moved from the top level
Inbox folder to newly created sub-folders.

The VF does not stop displaying any message if moved into an already
existing folder but if I create a new folder in the act of CTRL-M moving
such a new mssg it is lost from the list of ALL new mssgs.

The problem is that the VF properties Select Folders dialog does not
have new folders checked.

Is there a way to tell my New Mail VF to keep up with newly created
folders?

(Closing and restarting TB! does not help.)

Thx all,
Rich

JK SetMemo Text blank\0D\0A
JK MarkRead
JK MoveMessage folder \5C\5C\5C$JUNK$

JK endFilter

JK Note that this will catch ALL messages with empty text plus attachments of

The login userID for GMail is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

userID = [EMAIL PROTECTED]@pop.gmail.com but that does not work.

My old settings (that worked before GMAIL settings) were POP server to
127.0.0.1 and userID = [EMAIL PROTECTED] where OK for Spampal.

I guess it's the 2 @ signs in the userID field that are screwing me up!

Also, Gmail changes my FROM to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and not what my original

Any help folks?

BM those redirected to the office. Is there any way to do

Create an outgoing filter that checks whether the sent message has the
office as addressee and also contains the Resent-from: header. Have
that filter execute your preferred action: deleting, moving to a
 dedicated folder or whatever.

BM Nice clean solution - thanks Roelof!

Very similar situation here but this, my 1st attempt at an outgoing
filter in ver 2.12, failed for me. :(

Mssg comes in and as it stands now, based on its TO address, is caught
by an incoming filter that:
1- Marks the mssg as read
2- Moves it to the folder for that TO address
3- Redirects it to a cell phone

I also do not need or want this stored in SENT mail so I tried to make

Missing folders

2007-05-13 Thread rich gregory
Hello Bat-Folk!

Using old-timey version 2.12...

Is there a way to force TB! to inspect the account folder tree to make
sure that there are no mail boxes missing?

I have sub-folders on the hard drive under the mail account's top level
folder that definitely have mail databases in them but that do not seem
to appear in the folder list from within the application.

In-box folders were created in The Bat! on another PC.
When we copied the folder tree to this PC some folders do not appear.

Some are sub-sub- folders so comparing the 2 PCs would be a pain...

Is there a way to get TB! to re-read the drive's folder tree under the
account main folder?

Thx all,

PM The undocumented shortcut ctrl+shift+alt+L does exactly this.

MP Unless you have a non-typical setup like:
MP System (OS) on HD F and The Bat! on HD D.
MP In that case the shortcut does something that comes as close as close can be
MP to nothing! :-(

FWIW - Works fine here (Thank you very much) - EXCEPT it 'finds' the
ATTACHMENTS folder and complains that it has a bad mail database in it.

 OS on C:
 TB! on M:
Mail folder on M: under TB! prgm folder

Probably always does this anyway, no matter where the folders are I am
guessing.

EC In fact there where numerous discussions on this topic.
TF True, but [un]resolved.

UNRESOLVABLE. This topic is similar in tone to a religious war for some
reason! Those who insist that the integrity of an email should be
unassailable seem wholly unable to compromise. Nobody else cares, and
those who want to be able to do this feel vilified!

EC Personally I also think an eMail should not be altered.

I'd ask why but we're getting too OT (the topic was: How do I...?) I'll
simply say that I think email SHOULD be fully alterable if you want to
for any reason whatsoever. It is after all YOUR email in YOUR database.
I often fix emails that I've received to ensure better data in my
message database. Mostly it is a subject line edit, sometimes it is to
correct the message contents. For example, I'll correct an email when
someone might send me their contact info but omit or typo something.

I also edit EVERY message from PayPal to remove the footer and to clean
up the message so that it prints one order to (only) one page.

Lastly, since to me it is preferable to keep the time stamp and sender's
email address intact, emailing messages back to myself is not an option.

rg How about a networked mail folder and two BATs that both reference
rg that same database? If one machine is a laptop you would need to
rg start your VPN and map that drive letter before opening up TB!

AS I have found that Windows VPN is very slow, and I really do mean
AS very. Even on the same network I only get transfer rates of about
AS one MB/s or less. Working with larger folders is very difficult that
AS way.

Actually what I've been doing is using the VPN to connect to my LAN,
then using VNC to remotely control the PC that is running TB!. The only
VPN traffic is the screen redraws at 16 colors!

As long as the office PC and the LAN stay up this has been acceptable
(except on dial-up!).

AS I'm therefore using Windows Offline Folders to synchronize the
AS laptops. When detached, they take with them the most recent message
AS base and when reconnected, they synchronize to the latest updates. If
AS something important comes up while not connected, the laptop can
AS always fetch or send new mail by itself and synchronize again later,
AS of course.

Wouldn't you then end up with 2 identical folders that now cannot be
synced properly? Wouldn't each one now have data the other does not have
so neither can overwrite the other without loss of something?

Later,
RG

AS If e.g. a second machine wrote a new message in a folder that the

AS Sure: Just copy the mailbase files to the second installation.

How about a networked mail folder and two BATs that both reference that

If one machine is a laptop you would need to start your VPN and map that
drive letter before opening up TB! of course...

VPNs can be very tricky... Windows does have PPTP built in and maybe a
good firewall router will handle the incoming laptop connection for you,
no need to have 2 PCs 'doing' VPN, just the remote (laptop?) PC and the
router get it on the local LAN. (If you have Qs here write me, I do this
for a living.)

What we are NOT addressing in these replies to the original Q is:
What if the 2 PCs are accessing the mail database at the same time?

ASK The Voyager license is included in the TB Pro license. You have to
ASK update to the most recent TB release in order to use Voyager.

Yea, I expected to have to pay for the upgrade... I would just not use
the newer version, I'd stick with v2.12, therefore the question.

I am happy with the way 2.12 has been working for me and re-doing all
the filters, templates and anything else that may not move over easily
has been what's been stopped me from moving to v3.x.

ASK However, as far as I know there is no synchronisation feature
ASK between TB and Voyager. But you can create a backup and restore it
ASK on the other installation.

I am hoping that the database files are indeed interchangeable, as the
voyager sounds like exactly what I need.

ND Quite honestly, the reason I use Voyager is so I don't have to try and
ND sync anything. I just take it with me wherever I go!

What would you do if you lost your Voyager?
I rely on my email message database like I rely on Oxygen!

My message database is on a raid box. What I do now when I travel is to
use the ISP's webmail interface and try not to send anything unless it's
urgent. I just mostly delete spams and make calls based on the new mail,
then do the real replying when I get home!

I *MUST* be able to sync Voyager to v2.12, and yes, if this can be done
thru backup/restore operations that'll work. I would consider buying the
v3 license and just not use it!

MM I can't compare it with K9, because I have used K9 more then two

Watching this thread and I have seen this AntispamSniper compared to
K9 but not to SpamPal proxy with the Bayesian module.

Still teaching it and though it doesn't seem too bad I do *occasionally*
see TB! lock up at the importing messages part at the end of

Re[2]: ISP's Blocking TheBat

2006-07-12 Thread rich gregory
L I haven't run into this, but I'm quite new to TB.
L Why does this happen?
IAW If you have the X-Mailer option checked under
IAW Options|Preferences|General, then The Bat! is identified in the
IAW message headers. This is what they check to make their arbitrary
IAW decision. Unckeck this and all should be OK.

Once upon a time some spammer(s) did choose to use TB! due to it's
configuriblity. This lead to some ISPs decision to simply ban TB!
traffic than to expend any effort toward better filters. This practice
is seeming hard coded into some ISPs' thinking (/or hardware software
even maybe) to this day.

This is the reason that the option even exists under the options menu to
choose to not include TB! as the X-Mailer.

IAW Maybe RITLabs needs to allow the user to enter whatever text they want
IAW there!

Wasn't there an .EXE hack for TB! some versions ago, before that option
made it's way into TB!, that would allow you to do just that?

Richie

PO As it has been quite some moons ago since I used that one, have a
PO look at: [ your VF | Properties | Filter ] Do you have Age
PO available as filter condition? If so, configure it as Age is less
PO than 3 days. That should do the job.

I did look at the properties|filters screen but alas, no. There is no
AGE option there. :(

if there are plans to create a Google Desktop plugin so that it can
index email files from The Bat?

Marek You can downlaod it here:
Marek http://www.vgirlos2.narod.ru/thebat.HTML

JH I've downloaded it, installed it, and given it time to index my
JH messages. When I enter keywords into Google desktop that I know it
JH will find in my email, no email from The Bat! shows up in the list. Is
JH there something else I'm supposed to be doing?

There may be a check box that needs attention in the GDS prefs.

'nother filter question: To remove text from Subject line

2006-02-12 Thread rich gregory
Hello Bat-Folk!

Here's another filter question I would much appreciate help with.

Many of my received mssgs have a snippet of text inserted into the
subject line by either (or both) of the mail servers my email goes thru.

This snippets always start with [ and end with ].

If someone can advise how to do the following I would be very
grateful.

IF snippet = [SPAM] do nothing
IF snippet = [anything/else] remove snippet including the []s.

If the decision making part of the filter is too complex I would be
happy just to remove ALL [snippets].

(Using TB! v 2.12)

Maybe someone here could make a side business out of making filters
for me!

Thanks all.

There are TEST virus files from EICAR.

See:

The files themselves are at:

IIRC there are .COM, .EXE, .ZIP versions and maybe more. Try to email

The RegEx we worked on seems to work but only sometimes as today this

MM We worked on Name address, at your own request, not on address.
MM That's the reason why Linda Wily Liar got through this what we didn't
MM work on.

Sure, we worked on that! Don't you remember? ;)
(OK, maybe you did all the coding work but I did spec out the job!)

Actually, my original request for help DID mention that
 A) any name that does not = Real Name
OR B) any name that is BLANK
should be killed. The examples I gave were something like this:
 Good email:Real Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bad email :Incorrect Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Bad email :[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the above example of a spam that did make it thru the name field
was blank.

Actually now I am seeing emails come in with random characters added
as part of the good address such as:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Very distressing! I wonder (Batters) what more we can do!

MM What she has offered this time? Enlargement again? (-: You could offer
MM her a shrinkment in friendly return.

Wouldn't it be more polite to offer my enlargement to her in return?
(Oh, did I say that out loud?)

Thank you all

Sure, we worked on that! Don't you remember? ;)
MM Could I forget it? You were silent for a while and I already wanted to
MM ask you how it goes with the last killer-filter. I wondered if you had
MM wrecked more mails due to some typo/bad retyping then you wished to...

No, a family emergency has been / continues to take all my time. It
continues to keep my mind elsewhere. :(

Actually, my original request for help DID mention that
MM Yes I remember this request, it was interesting, and I did already
MM give you one very good solution, but...will be that you are not
MM very willing, or at least are hesitant, to change a bit some
MM routines... okay, that's not a problem, you will have just to have
MM more filters/work to do then. Let us see...

I am not understanding this paragraph too well... I am indeed open to
doing what I must (or thought I was!) but I do not remember any
solution other than:

  (?!Real Name) [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Which we now know does not work entirely. If I remember correctly I
was wondering if I would need more than 1 filter... What was odd was
that it seemed to do as hoped in my tests!

 A) any NAME that does not = Real Name -- OR
 B) any NAME that is BLANK-- Should be killed
MM Yep. Okay... Well, nothing then, you just will have to add another
MM filter which will destroy yet on server all what is not addressed to
MM [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can do it by treating entire
MM header part, with _no_ specific TO, CC etc. field.
MM It means, any message which doesn't have address
MM [EMAIL PROTECTED] in its header part will be
MM exterminated from server (the filter is in the flat forefootnote).[1]

I am embarrassed to say I do not understand what you are saying here.
(As I said, my mind is very much elsewhere these days.)

The filter below I do not understand either. Can you please tell me
exactly what it is to do? All can see (I think I understand) is that
it looks for ANY mail with [EMAIL PROTECTED]
somewhere in the header... Then what does it do??? (fkoDetectHeader??)

Thank you very much
Rich

I have to assume this plugin was talked about in this list or in TBUDL,
 where was I then?

ASK It was indeed talking about quite a while ago when an earlier version
ASK wasn't running for most people. :-)

I did some testing with the developer to fix the issues spoke about
here... It seems those things are indeed fixed but there is another
item on the wish list...

At present (read: Last I heard) the plugin requires you to select
folders to index from the plugin properties screen in TB! The issue is
that if you create a new folder and have selected to index ALL folders
it is still not included for indexing.

Conditional 2.12 filter

2006-01-27 Thread rich gregory
Hello Bat-Folk!

Thanks for all the help again in this latest wave of filter tuning!

I have another request for assistance: I'd like a selective download
filter that will only delete an email if

 1) [EMAIL PROTECTED] is in the TO: or CC: fields
AND
 2) [EMAIL PROTECTED] in NOT the sender

I have been testing some filters as incoming mail filters and when
satisfied that they are OK I have dragged them to the selective filter
section however they end up with 10 or 40 now magically included
in the signal strings. What gives?

Thanks again, all

Virtual folder strangeness

Hello Bat-Folk!

I successfully set up a new VF that only displays NEW mssgs.

As with all my folders, it is sorted by date recv'd with newer mssgs
at the bottom.

Strangely, sometimes when I delete a mssg from this folder the
selection highlight jumps up, selecting some other place much higher
(older) in the list.

A known bug? A setting? Hummm.

Re[2]: Virtual folder strangeness

2006-01-27 Thread rich gregory
What does store state between sessions mean?

C It means that the contents of the virtual folder (i.e., those
C messages that matched the filter) will be remembered between
C invocations of The Bat! Without it, The Bat! will rescan the search
C folders each time it starts up. This way, it will always have the
C latest messages. However, it may be slower. If you do choose to
C preserve the state between sessions, you can always force a rescan
C by pressing ESC.

Is there ever a time when you would not want this checked?

The only changes to TB!'s database are via TB! so how else could the
contents of the VF change?

Thx
RG
