Happy to confirm that this still works and it works well.
All my account specific template from the account that had the most
templates are now treated as common templates, making adding a few

Great - I have never used common QTF though it seems now that might
have been easier allround. Is it possible to copy the Account.QTB file
of one specific account into the Common location and that way turn the
account specific templates into common templates ? Then I would only
have to manually set up a few other templates scattered around various
accounts to have everything as common templates.

You could copy ACCOUNT.QTB from your %email% folder to the same place

%TO=""%-
%TO="a...@contesting.com"

First line clears the To field. Second line sets the address of the

%REPLYTO sets an alternative reply address of *your* e-mail, e. g.:

fine; the rest refuse to play, period. I get a totally
blank mail, and the F4 key doesn't work on replies. I
can't figure it out. They used to work fine.

What's different between the first one that works and all the others
that fail, in settings and in the templates themselves?

Is it something simple, like the tick being removed from use a
specific template for replies [or new messages] in the AB entry?
Or having more than one AB entry for the same contact but only setting
up the template in one of them? Or the SHIFT key being down when
pressing F4?

This is an IMAP account. The POP account seems OK,
though I haven't got very far with it. Will that go

You mean if you create messages from your POP account the AB templates
work but if you create messages to the same contacts from your IMAP
account the templates don't work? That sounds weird.

What's going on? How do I fix it?

For a totally blank email to be created it looks like it
is defaulting to a totally empty template set up *somewhere*... Check
all address book entries for the address you are trying to set up
templates for.

For IMAP accounts behaving differently, dunno as I only use POP.

Templates and other account related stuff is stored in the file
Account.CFN located in the home directory of the regarding account.

I found the following in an article by Gerd Ewald and edited by Marck

Regular Expressions can be used in templates, but you don't need
knowledge about RegExp to use templates and benefit from them.

For example, is it possible to create a new message or a reply and
have it show one of three different email account addresses in the
FROM line dependent upon the person to whom it is going without my
having to remember to change the FROM line?

Piece of cake. :-)

One possible solution would be to move your contacts into three
different address book groups, and set up individual templates for these
three groups where you add a %ACCOUNT and/or %FROM macro to set the
correct account/from address.

For example, my emails to this mailing list often get rejected the
first time because I forget to change the FROM line from my default
business address to the personal address I registered here with. :)

That can be solved just the same as above - for example, I have address
book entries for the mailinglists I'm subscribed to, and I'm using
individual templates for each mailinglist.

A direction to resources which might help me do this, if it's
 possible, would be appreciated.

You might want to check the template library on Marck's website. Some of
the templates there are quite complicated, but you can learn from them
nevertheless.

http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/samples.html
http://cgi.silverstones.com/library.php

Another good starting point is the helpfile - just search for Macros
and look at the full alphabetic list of macros. You get an idea about
the variables and commands that you can use that way.

And last not least, the TBUDP wiki http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/tbudp
has compact information about the template/macro system as well:

Yes, you can do that by using address book templates, that's what I'm
doing with this list. My AB template includes The macro %From= and
also calls several quick templates.

If your subscription address is bound to an account, you can use the
%Account=. macro too.

No.

Z Since one cannot have more than one Account Properties open at the

Two ways to do this easier:
1)
Open the account properties and a text editor
Copy and paste all templates to the text editor
Open the next account
Copy and paste the templates into the next account
2)
Copy your new message template to a QT (quick template) and all it 'New'
Share that QT with all accounts (options tab)
Change the new message template for all accounts into this:
%QInclude('New')%-
Do likewise with the other accounts.

Especially the second way has a certain appeal to me, but as I'm using
just one account, I can't really comment on either of them.

Now does that mean that even if the QT is checked to share with all
accounts, it doesn't really share unless the macro %QInclude('New')%- is
typed into the other Account's Properties?

The share with other accounts option allows the QT to be used by other
accounts. If that is not checked, they do not have access to it.

QT server a slightly different purpose than account templates. QT can
be used while composing the message manually (by entering the name and
pressing Ctrl + Space) and in a few other locations. The QINCLUDE
macro lets you use QT in account templates and even in other QT.

And if I modify the QT at a later date, the change will apply to all
accounts that has the %QInclude('New')%- in it?

Yes. Every time a message is created, the included macro is re-read,
so any changes will take effect the next time you compose a message.

Yes, but it depends entirely on what you want to do. You can do
anything with forward templates that you can do with the other
templates, including regex if you are so inclined.

This is what I use for my office account:

Start template

Hallo %ToFName,

%Cursor

%BCC=[EMAIL PROTECTED]%-

* This is a forwarded message *
From: %OFromName %OFromAddr
To: %OToList
CC: %OCCList
BCC: %OBccList
Date: %ODateEn, %OTimeLongEn
Subject: %OSubj

===8==Original message text===
%Text
===8===End of original message text===

End template

I BCC myself in, you might not want to do that. I have put the line
This is a forwarded message before the headers, as I think it makes
it clearer to the recipient. I have also edited the original
recipients' list a bit. It's just an example, it might not suit your
needs.

CW I was hoping that wasn't going to be the answer!

Well, there are some additional ways.

You can copy your account templates by closing TB and copying your
account.cfn file to your new account. However on restarting TB you'll
find that in that case you'll need to reconfigure your other
account settings.

You can copy your quick templates by closing TB and copy the
account.qtn file to your new account. Hoewever, when you'd be tempted
to use your QTs in other accounts, you'll have the appropriate option
checked, so this is a rather useless hint.

You can copy your folder templates by closing TB and copying the
account.flb file to your new account. However, that will also copy the
same folder structure to your new account. I'm not sure about the
consequences for your IMAP account on server.

You can copy your filter specific templates by closing TB and copying
the account.srb file to your new account. However that'll cause you to
duplicate your complete filter set to your new account.

You can copy your address book templates by copying the entire address
book to your new account, however this is rather useless, as you can
use one address book for all of your accounts.

CW How unbeliveably manual for a program such as TB!

Pray tell me, what kind of templates did you want to copy. When it's
merely the account templates you can hardly call it labour to copy and
paste them and foder templates tend to be little more specific and I
don't like them any way.

CW Maybe this should be a future feature request, and one high up the list
CW if you ask me!

There's a new feature on the way to copy account and folder settings
to other accounts/folders. The beta testers have a glance of it in one
of the previous betas.

CW Whoever created 'Filter Commander', do they fancy doing a similar thing
CW with templates?

Does filter commander support the NFS?

I may need this one.

This is the one I want! Excellent!

Basically I created my QT's in my original POP account. Over time, I
have evolved from that account and am now 'working' with IMAP. Although
I still have the POP account on my home machine, I only want to take
IMAP with me. Hence, the QT's are only on the home machine, although
shared.

Hopefully, I can now take these QT's to my IMAP account.

RO foder templates tend to be little more specific and I don't like them any way.

No folder templates here, mainly address book templates.

RO There's a new feature on the way to copy account and folder settings

I must've missed that one! Something to look forward to though and one
that I'm sure may well come in helpful!

RO Does filter commander support the NFS?

Never tried it to be honest, but I used it a few times on the OFS. I
would try it, but after having to rebuild all my filters for the NFS, I
don't want to do anything to upset it! I guess the common filters in NFS
takes away the need for such a program?

I've not tried common filters, so this is just a guess :-)

Thanks again for your help Roelof, superb summary of each template type
and more! ;-)

Actually that's the one I'd be most careful with. Especially when
you're transferring from POP3 to IMAP. I'd hate to think of the
possibilities for things to foul up when you're swapping the
account.cfn file with its server setting etc.

That's a rather safe one. Mind you that after you've copied the file,
you've lost the QTs you had previously made in your new account.

Mind that the file types I mentioned are only valid for v3. During v2
development the structures (and with them the file extensions) have
changed. Therefore making my summary dubious for v2 and worthless for
v1. (Only the .qtn was the same in v1)

 What does it do?

it cleans the subject when you reply to a mail; removes multiple Re's

For the mailinglist functionality I have the following:

Getting mailinglist post address out of the headers with some
hardcoded for specific lists (needs Python and plugin Pyxie):
-8
%REM=get correct %TO for mailinglists%-
%PY(
from re import search

  r = re.search('(?m)^List-Post: (?:mailto:)?([EMAIL PROTECTED])?\n', '''%HEADERS''')
  if r: tb.set('To', r.group(1))

)%-
%-
-8

Then comes the subject cleaner (and a script wihch gets the proper
fromaddr for myself).

For the checking if writing to a mailinglist I use the following:
-8
%REM=check if writing to mailinglist%-
%SetPattRegexp='^(.*)@'%-
%_onML=%RegExpMatch=#%-
%___%SetPattRegexp=(?ix)(tbudl|tbbeta|tbdev|tbtech)@thebat\.dutaint\.com

%___%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=%TOADDR%-
%___%SUBPATT='0'#%-
-8

After that I have a variable with the mailinglist name (the part that
matched in the parenthesis) and can use that to generate a nice
To:-headerentry fo ML posts:
-8
%REM='Add mailinglist info to %TO'%-
%IF:%_onML'':#%-
%_oldTOAddr=%TOADDR%-
%IF:'%FROMNAME''%OFROMNAME':%_newTO='%OFROMFNAME on '%-
%TO=''%TO=%_newTO%UPPER=%_onML %_oldTOAddr%-
%-
%REM='No numbered RE: on mailinglists'%-
%SINGLERE#%-
%-
%QInclude='#sig'%-
-8

There is also sth to remove myself from CC-List (if I should do a
reply-to-all):
-8
%REM=___kill %FROMADDR from CCLIST; for reply-to-all%-
%SETPATTREGEXP='(.*)?((,|^).*%FROMADDR[^\w]*)(.*)?'%-
%REGEXPBLINDMATCH='%CCLIST'%-
%IF:%SUBPATT='0':%CC=''%CC=%SUBPATT='1':''%-
%IF:%SUBPATT='4':%CC=%SUBPATT='4':''%-
%-
-8

In general, I have a 'message' and 'reply' Quick-template (I do not
forward often) that is simply included for my account's newmail/reply
templates and I don't have special templates for folders, AB groups or
contacts.
These QTs both include (%QInclude) a #init template (which gets my
fromaddr, the hello name, checks if the mail should be
signed/encrypted, ..) and afterwards generate the headers (xx
wrote:) and in case of reply cleans the subject, gets the proper
address, ...

That seems a bit complicated, but is in fact very good to maintain.
And instead fiddling around with different AB templates I simply have
to adjust my main templates a bit.

HTH :)

the details from there. Check out the %ABnnnppp macros in the

I use AB templates. In the AB templates, however, I have
quicktemplates, so that for example all AB templates for mailing lists
add the sig by way of %QInclude=mlsig. If I want to change my sig, I
need to do that only in the QT called mlsig.

Not that I know of. Unfortunately, the manual route is the only way.

Your signature is inappropriately long for this list. Please keep it
down to no more than 6 lines. In this way, bandwidth isn't wasted
and also, readers don't get frustrated or annoyed with it.

Be sure to have a look over the list information page, the link for
which is at the foot of each message from this list. There are very
good reasons for all the list rules. I hope that you'll take them in
good spirit. :)

Thanks.

I don't know Outlook express, but I believe you want to do something
that most people frown upon:

  Dear Blabla;

  (your message)

  Greeting.

  - Original Message -

  From:
  To:
  Subject:

  (total original message)

It is possible. I go step=-by-step, so it is easy to follow:

Without the header information, you can just use the following
template:

   %Cursor
   %Text

But that is not so good, as the original text will not be marked as
quoted (BIG disadvantage of Outlook). Better is this:

   %Cursor
   %Quotes

Now, you can put the full header info in there:

%Cursor

From:%OFrom
To: %OTo
Subject: %OSubject

%Quotes

But there is really no need to follow Outlook's conventions any more.
You are now dealing with a powerful email-client that can do better -
much better. Use your creativity and don't get stuck in old ways,
because the old MUA couldn't do anything else. Try yourself out and
find that life is much more than the narrow path of Outlook. Dare do
something different, something new, something creative! :-)

And find out why it is even more practical too, to not just top-reply
and bottom-quote, but to use inline-quoting. You will see that people
on this list use mostly inline-quoting, because this way, threads are
easier to follow. Welcome to the world of fully-functional email.

In that case I think that you've got multiple entries in the address
book with the same address. Otherwise TB gives preference to the
templates in this order: personal, address book group, folder,
account.
When you've got two entries with the same address in the address book
it's unpredictable what template TB will use. So check for double
entries. (It's possible for one entry to be part of multiple groups,
so even when you want someone to be part of several groups, he only
has to have one entry.)

Re: Templates in The Bat! 1.60c

2002-04-25 Thread Joseph N.

There are three ways to do what you have asked; it is not clear to me
which is really what you have in mind.

If you want one generic message for all email within a particular
category, e.g., business, then go into Options/Quick Templates, and
create or paste the content. Give it a name you'll remember, and
whenever you write a letter that is, say, for business, you can type
the name of the quick template and press Ctrl+SpaceBar to reproduce
the form content.

If you want a message that will always go to a particular person or
group of people, then put them in your address book. Open the contact
card for each person, go to the tab that is appropriate (New Message,
Reply, etc.) and type or paste the content you want to reproduce. Be
sure to check the box for using the template. Then, each time you
list that person as an addressee in a new message, or reply, or
whatever tab you filled in, the content will appear when you click
into the body of the message editor.

If you want *always* to include particular text in a new message, or
reply, or whatever, then go into Account/Properties, and go to the
Templates line. Open it up, and there will be places for new,
replies, etc., where you can type or paste content, and place it
appropriately with respect to the cursor and other information.

In all of these places, there are also options to include some
information automatically, like the date or specific text. Those are
the macros. You can use them in simple ways that are supplied, or
in very complicated ways that are not documented but which people on
this list can help explain.

HTH.

discussions you have in TBUDL. Could anyone explain this novice

 to store them somewhere?

There are different ways to achieve this.

1. Account templates (see under Account/Properties/Templates)
2. Folder Templates (Folder/Properties/Templates)
3. Address Book Templates (Properties for any contact or group you
entered)
4. Quick Templates (Ctrl+Shift+q)

The first category should be used for those messages you don't need
specific info or formatting for, that is, Account Templates are the
most general ones.

Folder Templates can be quite useful if you need quite general (but
more specific than AccTemp) templates for certain groups of messages
originating from different sources but linked by something (e.g.
business vs. private). But beware, the take precedence over AccTemp,
and if you are in the wrong folder, you may sent out a message with
the wrong template.

AB Templates are very good if you create them for every group or
contact you have. You can thus create individual messages for every
single person (even address) you have listed in your AB. Combined with
the last category you'll get a very versatile and easy to use system
of individual messages.

QTs can be used to create special templates for messages that are not
that often and may be evoked manually. They can also be inserted into
other templates. This is particularly handy if you have lots of
contacts but only a few different looking message templates for them.

I use about a dozen standard templates for new messages, replies,
forwarding in two different languages and two categories each (business
and private in German and English). Together with two QTs for my
signature (one formal, one less formal) that makes much less than 20
templates I may have to change, not dozens or even hundreds.

For details search help for the above mentioned templates, and look
under macros. They are a powerful tool to make message creation
easy, flexible and mostly automatic.

When you're replying manually you've got to filter messages from the
two sites to two folders and define folder reply templates.

Maybe you want to use the '%COOKIE' macro which automatically choose
one tag line randomly (at most it's randomly *G*)?
See German help file for further reference ... syntax is either

%COOKIE

if you have all cookie lines in account properties

or

%COOKIE=filename

if you want it to choose one line from a file located on your hard
disk.

Randomly? Then the answer was - I think - already given: Use a text
file, enter every tag line you want in *one* line. In your template
insert the line %WRAPPED='%COOKIE=Path\file name'.

You can also use TB!'s built-in cookie facility.

Depends on 'what' kind of automatic you're talking about.
What's the final goal you want to achieve?

Entering system time of mail writing?
Random signature line?
Several different templates for different recipients?
Automatic controlling of coffee machine, freezer or television,
depending on when you write the mail?

If you could give us some more details we'll surely be able to find a

That's *definitely* the way to do it because all you
have to do is to make the one change in the QT it
affects any msg that uses a template that includes
  that particular QT.

In your template you 'include' (or call) your QTs by
using %QINCLUDE in the format %QINCLUDE=QT name.
Ultimately, IMO, all templates should be made up of
  $INCLUDEs.

  Works for me, anyway.

Yes you can do so. You will then discover the power of QT's

Set up the templates as QT and then in the AB entry or Folder or Account
templates put

%Qinclude=Template HandleName

You can incl multiple QT's

It is possible with quick templates. When you tick 'share with other

If you mean the new message, reply and forward templates I don't think
there is a way to share it over all accounts.

Hello Allie;

Tmtdc These macros are just requests made by you to output portions of

Tmtdc information that's in the message to which you're replying. It will
Tmtdc also
Tmtdc output system information for you such as the date and time (%Date,
Tmtdc %Time)
Tmtdc or other useful information. They were designed to prevent
Tmtdc repetitive
Tmtdc actions.

I've modified a couple to no good effect. Are templates/macro's a sort
of .bat file?

Tmtdc Another related macro is %Text. This one will output the
Tmtdc entire text of the message without quoting it.

Will that mean plain rather than colored text with initials prefacing
the text?
Tmtdc The best way to understand these macros is to experiment with
them.
Tmtdc There's an article in the TB! FAQ which outlines the template structure
Tmtdc http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/templates.html. It will also give you
Tmtdc an idea of what these templates and macros can do for you. Experiment away
Tmtdc . :=)

I read it this morning. I need to practice but I'm
intellectually impaired by the onset of a cold. I'll lurk a bit till I get
my wits back.

Tmtdc Threading is simply the process of grouping together messages

Tmtdc + - Your message
Tmtdc |
Tmtdc - - My message

Tmtdc My message will appear chronologically after yours if you also
Tmtdc thread in descending order based on received time.

Tmtdc The only way to truly grasp this is to see threading in action. I suggest
Tmtdc that you switch to receiving TBUDL messages individually and then switch
Tmtdc to threading by references, with sorting by received time in descending
Tmtdc order.

I'd considered that but the traffic would defeat or at least impair all
other purposes of The Bat as my all purpose email client.I don't
anticipate heavy participation in this group beyond becoming able to
operate basic functions of the client. I have neither purpose for nor
interest in the more powerful and esoteric functions of The Bat.

a How can I best take your comments out
of my digest, quote them and then a reply still keeping the integrity of
the threading?

Tmtdc Hopefully, you'll realize after my explanation that this cannot be
done.
Tmtdc Since when you reply to the digest message, you're not replying directly
Tmtdc to me. TB! will therefore not be able to generate that critical piece of
Tmtdc header information:

I accept this but don't "see" it. It links our messages by numerical
identity. That part I understand. The actual mechanism in action I can't
see.

Nick A. helped me get formatted so I trust my setting are good ones.
However this hasn't stopped a tendency for the message to scroll out of
sight to my left when I move the cursor to the vertical scrolling
controls. No horizontal scroll is showing. I'd like to lock the Edit Mail
Message screen and prevent this. AH; 8- ) Store Window
Position?

  Thanks Allie,

In a sense, yes. You're really telling TB! through these templates and
macros what to automatically do with the new, reply or forward message
that you generate.

aWill that mean plain rather than colored text with initials
a prefacing the text?

It means unquoted text. Your text above is quoted because each line is
preceded by 'a '. OTOH, my text isn't quoted. The %Text macro will just
output the original message body as is, without quoting it.

a I accept this but don't "see" it. It links our messages by numerical
a identity. That part I understand. The actual mechanism in action I
a can't see.

Say your message id is 'azrael123'.

I reply to your message and you have threading by references enabled. TB!
examines my message headers where it will see the following two lines:

Message ID: allie567

In-Reply-To: azrael123

TB! will link our two messages together since your message ID is the ID of
the message I'm replying to.

Another message comes your way and this one has the following lines:

Message ID: jasper890

In-Reply-To: azrael123

Here TB! again realises that the message is a direct reply to yours and
links them together in the thread. The thread will look as below:

+ - Azrael
  |
  |
   -- Allie
  |
  |
   -- Jasper

Say that yet another person writes and the headers contain:

Message ID: Mutt4455
In-Reply-To: allie567

TB! will detect that this is a reply to my message since my message ID is
the one stated in the headers as the message being replied to. The thread
will now look like this.

+ - Arael
  |
  |
   -- Allie
  | |
  | -- Mutt
   -- Jasper

Get the drift? :=)
