[Texascavers] TCR cooks wrap-up (sort of...)

2016-10-18 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
The coolers are washed and put away, the recycling sorted (thanks all for only
0.5% trash in there!) and put out, bills paid... Only the washing up and
re-pack of the trailer to go...

Would like to thank the Aggies for another *outstanding* contribution - helping
cook, serve, wash up after (!!), dismantle tent and re-pack of trailer. We
could not do the weekend without their help, and it is *very* much appreciated.

The following people were largely responsible for getting all y'all fed -
Cammy and Vico Jones, Sean Vincent, Laura, Jocie Hooper, Eric Flint, Rob
Upchurch, and a host of choppers (too many to list), stirrers and last minute
shoppers (Ken Demarest)! I want to thank them for all their hard work, and
putting up with me being a miserable all Saturday! Oh, and Sam Marshall
for hauling the new trailer to and from TCR.

I have been chief cook and bottle washer for 10 TCRs now and the time has come
for me to hang up my spoon and apron, and pass the trailer keys to a new, more
enthusiastic, volunteer. It has been an interesting ride, but I need to enjoy
Paradise Canyon from the other side of the pot sometime.

If you have the desire to take this on - lead a team of enthusiastic volunteers
of your making, cooking food for your greater circle of friends, then please
get in touch asap and we'll pass on some wisdom before our old brains erase it.

So long, and thanks for all the chillies.

-Stefan

OK. BUT THERE ARE QUALITIES FOR CAVER STEW. IT IS A STEW. It is usually
concocted at the entrance to a car after a long and arduous caving trip.
Sometimes it gets eaten by sneaky dogs. Caver stew has certain elements. Fresh
onions. Noodles, cheese, mushroom soup, salt and pepper and other things to
make it wonderful.

[Texascavers] TSS Survey Contest @ TCR -- Results

2016-10-18 Thread David Ochel via Texascavers
Folks,

Congratulations to the winners of this year's survey contest. Andrea
Croskrey and myself seized the opportunity to do something else with the
course this year and run it through the new playground instead of
through the water. The playground probably had a little more steel in it
than we anticipated, but most of the seven teams that participated
managed the challenge of their compass needles being deviated by that
quite well... And so:

1. Place: Team Fisher Ridge FOREVER!!! (Andy Edwards and Sean Lewis),
with a loop closure error of 0.31 meters (even though they surveyed in
feet ;-))

2. Place: Dale Barnard and Galen Falgout, with a loop closure error of
1.57 meters

3. Place: Batgirl Omura & Yeti Habiak, with a loop closure error of 1.61
meters

Many thanks go to the sponsors of our prizes: First and foremost the
Texas Speleological Survey, which donated the set of Suuntos (first
place) and the Bosch disto (second place); G4 Spatial of Austin and San
Antonio, who gave us a significant break on the instruments; and
CaveSkinz for one of the survey pouches (third place)!!!

Thanks also to Dale, trusted partner in crunching the numbers while
everybody else is frolicking in the parade... :)

Some observations that might help you survey:

1) Surveying to the millimeter (instead of centimeter) is unlikely to
make a significant difference in the field. Just the stretch in the
survey tape will probably even out any tiny win you might gain through
that...

2) On the contrary, under good conditions Suunto instruments can usually
be read to the quarter degree. Not sure how much of a practical
difference that makes compared to reading them to the half degree.

3) While the rules state that we won't enter both fore- and backsights
for you into the computer, it makes sense to at least read both
directions anyway. This lets you spot potential issues with your primary
shot (such as those caused by steel) on the spot.

Cheers,
David

I accidentally left my mindset, memory channels, frame of mind,

If found,. leave them there, and I will pick up next October.

If I don't return to pick them up, please put under an algae covered rock.

I met Ken at the 2016 TSA Spring Convention.

He was obviously new, but made a valiant effort to meet everybody
and learn everybody's name and find out what their claim to fame was.

I think he has already read and memorized part of "the" book on the history

a Google Spreadsheet that anyone of you can access and edit.

Obviously, it is not even a rough draft yet.

Edit as you please. Erase your name, draw lines, move columns, etc.

As to the Jaseks, we missed the last two years due to my recovering from
unexpected surgery both years which made travel and camping unacceptable risks
to total recovery. This was known to those who needed to know. I also still
work, and being a responsible person, can not always take off when convenient
for me if it jeopardizes the FI where I work for.

But as I said, this is need to know for those in charge ☺️

Re: [Texascavers] potential future TCR attendees

2016-10-18 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
No such thing as a free lunch. David, go ahead and start putting a hundred
dollar bill in the TCR bank each month and by the time 12 months rolls around
we can implement this scheme. Double that amount and we can pay for a caterer,
triple that hundred dollar deposit and we can add a live band too.

[Texascavers] LaChance Sinkhole Dig this Saturday - October 22 at 9 am - Near New Braunfels

2016-10-18 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Folks,

Just a reminder that we're organizing another dig at the LaChance Sinkhole
located northwest of New Braunfels for Saturday, October 22 (this weekend).
This is a compound sinkhole with four different throats. The sinkholes drain a
large area and have resulted in flooding of the house on the property. We made
a lot of progress removing material from the sinkhole and creating some berms
out of rock to help slow down water and drop sediment. One of the sinkholes is
a cave approximately 50 feet long that has a 15 foot down climb to a bedding
plane crawl. The digging is soft debris.

The other sinkhole throats are various amounts of rock and dirt. The cave
associated with the sinkholes should go big. This is one of the bigger
sinkholes in the Texas Hill Country and it is on the north side of the
Guadalupe River so probably drains to San Marcos, approximately 20 miles away.

The dig will start around 9 am and the weather looks great. We'll have a jack
hammer and generator at the site. We'll need buckets, pry bars, shovels, etc.
for work at the cave.

I have room for about 25 folks so if you would like to go, please let me know.

Thanks,

Geary Schindel

[Texascavers] cavers passing away - more obituaries

2016-10-18 Thread David via Texascavers
This past weekend, we bid our farewells to 3 former friends and caving
colleagues.

I was thinking that statistically, there were probably more than 3 that
left us in the
past year, but it would be very difficult to find that info.

So I did some basic Google searches.Below is a list of the first 6 that
popped up
( There were others )"The first one is a Texan.

1 )Glen Dale Gressett, 82

a pilot who loved flying, scuba diving, cave exploring, gold
mining, arrowhead hunting, and all water sports

2 )David Spencer Martin

died: 8-12-16

age 66, a resident of Wheaton, IL
He was a life time member of the National Speleological Society

3 )Katie Jane McClanahan Musch, 83
Alamagordo, NM

born: 2-12-33, Okra, Texas
died: 8-9-16

Earlier in her life she was active in the study of crystals and
minerals and cave exploring

4 )Claron Dale Bjork
born:7-30-39, Murray, Utah
died: 7-5-16

He enjoyed cave exploring and became a river rafting guide. His
favorite subject in school was
science, especially biology, and he went on to earn various degrees
in microbiology, aquatic biology,
   and a Ph.D. in entomology.

5 )Michael Hall
born:11-16-83 ( Portland, Oregon )
died: 7-21-16 ( Yelm, Washington car accident )

Lived near Olympia, Washington. He loved cave exploring

6 )Kenneth Lynn “Kenny” Chandler

died: 5-18-16, in Woodville, Alababma
He was 58.

He loved cave exploring, but his favorite hobby was riding his
mountain bike
for miles through Kennamer Cove.
