That is true that you can install the latest linux libre, but these are newer
packages besides the kernel. On top of that, sometimes people want a kernel
that matches the Ubuntu release. We currently have that with the stock and
3.5 kernel from 12.10.
Gnome Shell is horrible and if its installed by default, it will be the first
thing I purge. Unity isn't bad, but many here hate it.
