Make sure you test it too, about once or twice a year, just to make sure
 nothing has changed.

Only U2 OEM Partners can run Hosted systems. If you pay maintenance
directly to IBM and are a direct end user, you cannot Host. Check with
 your U2 License person.

And lastly, U2 Licensing maint fees *may change. At a minimum, you have

[U2] Unicommand Paragraphs

2006-08-10 Thread gibboda
I am using UniObjects for Java. I am working on trying to run datatel query
paragraphs using the Unicommands. I have successfully been able to run
select statements, list statements and download statements individually with
the unicommands. But I have several queries in paragraph forms and having
trouble getting the unicommands to execute them. Any suggestions will be
helpful.

Thank you for your advice.

Before you do anything Datatel-related, make sure you execute
'ENVINIT' and FR.JUMPSTART'. (That's for Benefactor. It might be
ST.JUMPSTART for the student system, etc.)

My guess is that an I-Descriptor in one of your paragraphs expects the
Envision environment to be there.

RE: [U2] Hosted UniData

2006-08-10 Thread Don Verhagen
We've colo'd at an SBC (ATT) data center also for the last 2+ years.
The best thing about the ATT center is the communications connected to
the Matrix [smirk]. With the 4 hurricanes last year and 3 the
previous, Our US locations didn't even blink (I on the hand, beg,
borrowed, and yes, even stole fuel). We use to have it in our own site
with generators, the servers were up, but no one could connect because
the telecom lines were down.

David W, If you want some pricing info call me direct, you know the
numbers.

We've had our UV server colo'd at one of SBC's (now ATT) data
centers
for about 5 years, and have been happy with their service. They
provide
what you'd expect from a hardened data center:

Multiple layers of physical security - you pass through 2 man traps
and
a biometric palm scan to get on the data center floor.
Connections to multiple power grids and redundant diesel generators.
 24x7 access.
24x7 staffed NOC if you need something power-cycled (i.e. a hung
Windows
 server).
Data center floor elevated above the flood plane.
Built to withstand a 7.4 earthquake.
A fire suppression system that won't damage electronics.
Redundant internet connections to your cabinet.

As Symeon noted, the software you're running is irrelevant to your
colo
provider since you manage the servers yourself. AFAIK, SBC only had
2
data centers prior to the merger with ATT (southern California and
west
Texas), but I think ATT had a few more. They also offer some degree
of
managed hosting, but I've never checked into the details.

[U2] Universe ODBC driver performance issues

2006-08-10 Thread Chris Brooks
I am new to the group and to UniVerse. We are experiencing issues in
UniVerse 10.1.3 downloading data via the ODBC connection to SQL Server.
2.6 mil records can take 2 hours to complete. We are currently using
the default settings for the ODBC driver. I will soon make changes to
increase the prefetch and threshold values. Any experience with the
ideal settings? From my testing the best performance seems to be at
prefetch = 16383 and threshold = 4096 on the ODBC driver. At this
settings seem to get a 30% performance increase. I would like to see it
improve even more.

To complicate things the UniVerse is using a SAN for storage. Multiple
processors on the box and they are set to multi-threaded operations.
During the download the CPU is utilized less than 10%.

Anyone have any ideas of additional performance things to check in
UniVerse?

Thanks

Chris

RE: [U2] Change command prompt character

2006-08-10 Thread Bob Woodward
You need to set the second and third fields in SYSTEM(4002).
0001: STELPROMPT = @WHO : ''
STELPROMPT2 = @WHO : ''
STELPROMPT3 = '+'
0002: ASSIGN 1 TO SYSTEM(4001)
0003: ASSIGN STELPROMPT TO SYSTEM(4002)

Field 2 is for the active select list prompt and field 3 is for the
command continuation prompt, which I simply left as the single character
+. This worked in a PICK flavor account in UV 10.1.18 on WIN Server
2003. This is documented in the online HELP for UV.PROMPT. The command
is actually UVPROMPT but the online docs are accessed by UV.PROMPT.
Strange, but true.

Wow! I'm pretty excited about learning about this. This is something
I've been looking for some time.

It seems to work great except after setting the prompt using this
method
the usual prompt which shows you have an active select list
 disappears.

Does anyone have any more information about SYSTEM(4001), SYSTEM(4002)
 and/or the disappearing ?

Re: [U2] Universe ODBC driver performance issues

2006-08-10 Thread Don Kibbey

If it's speed you want, go with a text file dump of the data and then
an SQL bulk insert job. I did much the same thing (though with fewer
records) and improved performance dramatically. Sometimes the good
old tools really are better.

2006-08-10 Thread Allen E. Elwood
Hi Eric

Andy is just a friend that I sent this email on behalf of, and isn't
actually a member of this group.

By M2K he meant Manage-2000 which is now owned by Epicor. This product has
been around since 1978, and at last count had something like 700 menus.
Never bothered counting the number of programs but it's probably around 10
to 12 thousand programs/subroutines.

http://www.epicor.com/www/products/manufacturing/manage2k/

And on the other subject of 'good programming skills' if anyone here has
ever seen one of Andy's programs they would know what he meant. He almost
redesigns the language with his custom functions, so if you don't have a
good handle on Unidata you might be lost for a month or so.

I imagine that if you had 5 to 7 years of Unidata programming you'd be in
like Flynn. M2k has a huge number of Utilities but they are fairly easy to
learn, so the familiarity with Unidata would be more important, imho...

Cool! It works perfectly for me in Pick flavor, UV 10.1.4, RH EL 3.
That's a lot more efficient than the 250 line program I was using, and I
was never able to get the select prompt to work correctly. It's
completely undocumented in the online help for this version of UV
though.

Sounds like you're I/O bound, although 2.6 million records in 2 hours
isn't all that bad in my experience. Is it possible you're hitting the
threshold of your NICs, or competing with a lot of other network
traffic? If both machines have multiple NICs, you could reserve one on
each machine for only talking to the other. You could add an entry to
the hosts file on each so it would only know the other machine by the
reserved NIC's IP, then just make sure the reserved IP addresses don't
exist in DNS so no other machines will use them. If the machines are
physically close, a crossover cable from NIC to NIC would eliminate any
switch performance issues. At that point a rough calculation of your
throughput based on the average size of each record would tell you if
you're utilizing the available bandwith, or if there's some other
bottleneck.

RE: [U2] Universe ODBC driver performance issues {Unclassified}

2006-08-10 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
John,

Chris is transferring on average about 360 (2.6M / 2 / 3600) records per
second. If the records are ~200 chars, then he's getting about
700kb/sec (that's kb, not kB), or about 1.5% of the throughput you might
hope for on a 100Mbps Ethernet pipe!
So I'd say Chris does have an issue here.

I can see how increasing the block size would make the network traffic
less inefficient, it would be interesting to see what percent busy the
network card reports.

One of the other issues can be that the data contains, on the UV side,
complicated I-Type Dictionary items that mean that the exported data
isn't nearly as simple as it looks. This can cause an unexpectedly
large amount of I/O on the UV side.

Mike

ODBC is known to be very chatty and inefficient, so you have to add
quite a bit of overhead for the protocol itself (though I don't know how
much). Even so, you're right, that's pretty poor performance over 100MB
ethernet and it would be abysmal for a gigabit link.

RE: [U2] Change command prompt character

2006-08-10 Thread Womack, Adrian
Huh? That makes no sense.

The ASSIGN is only done once per session, i.e. at login time. I think
having your prompt showing whether there was an active select list
active when you logged in, isn't really that useful ;)

FWIW
We have our own command editor, which shows which selectlists are active
in front of the prompt - so, for example, if selectlists 1 2 are both
active, the prompt would be:

12:

Where the 12 is in half intensity.

Subject: RE: [U2] Change command prompt character

How about replacing the third line with
ASSIGN MYPROMPT : (IF SELECTINFO(0,IK$SLACTIVE) THEN ELSE ) TO
SYSTEM(4002) to handle the active Select List #0 case?

(To use the mnemonic you will have had to include INFO_KEYS.H.)
