I had the same problem with my HP PSC 750 and after a lot of research I
finally found out that both packages sane and sane-utils were not
installed by default in Hardy. After manually installing both my scanner
worked like before.
It might be worth a try to see if this solves your issues with HP

Upon further investigation it turns out that both applications are
neither installed, nor available through synaptic. So for some reason
the menu entries are listed in the Gnome menu editor, but the
applications themselves are not present.

Ok, I'd like to confirm this problem as well.
I'm having this problem with the VLC player. I want to set it as my
default DVD player, but it is not listed in the drop down list. So at
this point I cannot have VLC be my default player upon insertion of a
movie DVD.

since this is an old bug report from before Hardy development that one
could think it has always been present for some. As far as I know from
the forums (both Ubuntu and Kubuntu) numerous people don't have their

root both HP-Toolbox and xsane work properly, but when launched as
regular user they have communication problems with the devices:

However, Gnome ignores these settings.
So, either gconf-editor is not handling it properly, or another

These are certainly not random issues. They all occured at the same time after
