old. Version 0.52, released in February 2012, is an important bugfix
release. Could you try again with the version in quantal? (e.g.,

The ffmpeg issue fixed in 0.19.21 is a crash, no? That would be a different
bug. But does it go away with a newer version of mpd?
Do you think it's possible your problem is related to slow hardware?
Does mpd log anything useful while this looping occurs?

in use" indicates that there's another mpd instance running already.
Could that be a user instance? In any case, your issue is probably moot
after a reboot?

I suspect the issue lies with PulseAudio being started from the user
session upon login, and a daemonized mpd missing some crucial bit of
information (pulse cookie from environment?) somewhere. Note that you're
not actually using ALSA, but the ALSA emulation provided by
pulseaudio...
