[Bug 1066103] [NEW] NVIDIA blue (aka smurf) video problem is still an issue on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Public bug reported: Video is still blue using NVIDIA cards on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have no idea how to fix this. The web is clogged with bad advice and out-of-date solutions. Turning off hardware acceleration fixes the issue but is a totally inadequate work around. The CPU gets insanely hot and the fan screams like a dying child during video. The other solutions floating around (like messing with the Flash config files) don't seem to work, nor does updating to latest version of flash. This is a top priority issue and it has been around for over a year now. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066103 Title: NVIDIA blue (aka smurf) video problem is still an issue on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1066103/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1021525] Re: Resume from suspend has stopped working on Dell Inspiron 1720... computer freezes
This bug appears to have gone now that I'm running 304.37-0ubuntu1~lucid~xup1 of the Nvidia driver. I installed this update a few days ago. (August 20, 2012). My guess is that it was an Nvidia- related regression which is now fixed. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit Use the middle mouse button to paste highlight-selected text does not move the cursor (and the viewed text) to the chosen insertion point. Everything can be made to work on the HP 1030NR including sound and the internal mic. Assuming a fresh install of UNR 9.04, you'll want to install the packages patch, gettext, and libncurses-dev before compiling the three ALSA modules as described above in Mauricio's comment. [Bug 363592] [NEW] for UNR 9.04 RC, sound doesn't work out-of-box on HP 1030nr netbook
Public bug reported: I installed the UNR 9.04 RC on an HP 1030nr netbook. The good news is nearly everything works great and I was really impressed with UNR both functionally and aesthetically. The bad news is that for the HP 1030nr netbook, the sound did not work out of the box. Basically to fix the problem I had to compile and use the latest version of ALSA. To get the sound working, I used the information available on several bug threads for the HP netbooks. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997590 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=996724 https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/57848 However no individual solution worked, and after trying them all several times and I had given up. I discovered however upon the (strangely, not the first, but the second) reboot after giving up that the sound was in fact now working. So *some* combination of recompiling the latest ALSA drivers (although the utils never completely 100% successfully) and fiddling with the volume controls as discussed in those threads managed to solve the problem. Needless to say, having sound trouble made the release feel very 1999 for linux. I'm quite experienced with computers and compiling my own software, so if I had trouble then most people would not be able to fix it. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- for UNR 9.04 RC, sound doesn't work out-of-box on HP 1030nr netbook https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

There's no error from the applet. There's nothing worth taking a screen shot. It applet just simply doesn't change the frequency. If you need more information, how about asking Could you post the output of the __ file after trying to switch the frequency? or some other question that helps get the bug diagnosed instead of blaming the reporter. It's insulting to keep saying the bug report is poor when I already explained why it is not. The devs at launchpad seem to fling around closing this bug report because it lacks the information even when the lacks information part is false. This policy alienates reporters. Instead of blaming bug reporters by saying the bug report is poor, the close message should be, We are closing the bug because we have too few people and too many open bugs. That's still a bad policy but at least it's truthful and doesn't run the risk of false accusing someone of poor submissions. A few points: 1) Bugs do not rot. If it's policy to close them early, it's a bad one. 2) Even a poorly reported bug can evolve into a good submission with time. 3) Users will provide missing information if you ask. 4) They will be offended if you call their submissions poor. 5) They will be really offended if the submission is not poor but people keep saying so like Chatty-Kathy dolls. 6) Bug reporters might end up quitting their submissions. -- cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Why do the bugs at launchpad get closed so quickly? Bugs do not rot. I didn't even realize there was activity on the bug and 30 days isn't all that much time to respond anyway. I also don't understand why this bug was being closed because I did post what appears to be the proper information (Before I submitted my bug, I even found other bugs with comments saying what I posted is the information that is needed). The followup question doesn't even make much sense: 1) I said which program, the cpu frequency scaling monitor and 2) There's nothing to take a screenshot of that illuminates anything. [Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank
Neither Compiz nor my dual monitor setup worked with the free drivers. (The xorg.conf file also got screwed up after switching drivers. I'm afraid to try more driver tests now that I have everything running again because this is my work machine.) I did, however, figure out a pattern for a small reproducible test case that can cause the type of problem I reported. 1) Open a gnome-terminal 2) execute a clear command 3) if you want you can do an ls or just have the prompt at the top of the window 4) When the window is resized by pulling the top of the window down below where the cursor was, the prompt will become invisible. (There are similar problems with resizing using the bottom of the window.) If you see the problem, try it without doing the clear command. For me, no bug occurs. Perhaps there is something about the clear command that permanently screws up a terminal. I tested this with both the desktop cube and plane plugins and it was the same result; so this not just a plugin specific bug but something more basic. Now that clear is a suspect, I'll try to notice if problems *only occur* in windows in which clear has been executed (probably not but we'll see). -- terminal output frequently not current or blank https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/244356 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank
Hi, Mike. It seems impossible to construct a testcase regarding this bug. I've been trying to notice a pattern for weeks now. You can just sit there typing ls over and over and occasionally the output will not show properly. My guess is that there is some sort of time syncing issue going on between X and compiz. It happens in gnome-terminal and also xterm windows. It does seem to be more frequent in the xterms than in the gnome-terminals. But there's also a distinct other behavior where sometimes windows that were covered up do not show their text upon re- display. The cause of this may be different but it too is unreproducible: same conditions... different results. Is it a problem with the terminal program? Probably not. I've never seen this behavior in years of using these programs and I've used them for years. Only when compiz is running. I think best thing to do is wait to see if other people are experiencing this and go from there. I'll look into making a video of the problem sometime in a week'ish when I get a chance. [Bug 244356] [NEW] terminal output frequently not current or blank
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz When using compiz (at least on the Ubuntu (Gutsy and now Heron)), terminals frequently (every few minutes with several windows open) do not display their text properly. For example, terminal windows that were covered by other windows sometimes show only the window background (e.g., black). Using the window's scrollbar makes the text pop back. Also when scripts are running, the final displayed output at the end is frequently a mixture of old text with the last line only being proper. There's not much more I can elaborate on as the behavior is unpredictable. [Bug 204463] Re: Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.
Here's an update because Hardy is so near release. I finally downloaded a copy of hardy-desktop-amd64.iso (beta). Unfortunately I am unable to connect to the wireless network using it. This could simply be because the network was out of IP addresses (only class B on a campus) or for technical reasons. I was too fed up at this point to tinker anymore. I decided to try to compile the iwlwifi-1.2.25 driver along with the mac80211-10.0.4 subsystem. After a lot of frustration and many Google searches I gave up because make for both complains that it can't find a Makefile in my kernel directory (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/). Other people have had this problem too. I installed a ton of stuff trying to see if I was missing packages it needed but nothing helped. I wasn't about to go diving into code to fix the problem. So instead I downloaded compat-wireless-2008-04-08 and to my utter shock and astonishment it compiled with no problems. I've been running under it for a day and a half down without the fatal crashes I originally reported. The problem may have a workaround. I'll post an update in a few days when I know for sure. -- Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. [Bug 204463] Re: Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.
Thanks for the prompt reply, Leann. I'm working on downloading Hardy 8.04 beta to test it. I'm in Chile with a very slow connection that literally takes days to download the iso and my first attempt stopped after 450 out of 690 MB. In the meantime, here is my 'modinfo iwl3945' info. I've been considering downloading the iwlwifi drivers. I recently replaced my 'iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode' file with another one from 'iwlwifi-3945-ucode-2.14.1.5.tgz'. Strangely the files had exactly the same size but differed. There was no difference in performance after the replacement. I changed the file back to the original for now; so this is the setup that a clean install of Kubuntu 7.10 provides (I allowed it to use proprietary drivers). filename: /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlwifi/origin/iwl3945.ko license:GPL author: Copyright(c) 2003-2007 Intel Corporation version:1.1.0 description:Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection driver for Linux srcversion: B019B21F27D52A5DCDDA000 depends:iwlwifi_mac80211 vermagic: 2.6.22-14-generic SMP mod_unload 586 parm: antenna:select antenna (1=Main, 2=Aux, default 0 [both]) (int) parm: disable:manually disable the radio (default 0 [radio on]) (int) parm: hwcrypto:using hardware crypto engine (default 0 [software]) (int) parm: debug:debug output mask (int) parm: disable_hw_scan:disable hardware scanning (default 0) (int) parm: queues_num:number of hw queues. [Bug 204463] [NEW] Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. It came with a Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) wireless mini card. I use Kubuntu 7.10. The network works fine for about 6 hours on average and then it will drop the wireless connection. About three-quarters of the time, you cannot reconnect and trying to do so freezes the Knetworkmanager tray icon. Even worse, you cannot easily shutdown your machine. After logging out it pauses indefinitely and you have to hit the power button which causes the machine to make some progress before freezing again. Then it is permanently stuck until you do a hard powerdown (via the 10-second hold on an Inspiron). It seems like the 3945 has quite a number of different bugs (none of which exactly match my experience). This is an important card. Kubuntu uses a PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection for this card. I can post further information upon request. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. [Bug 190228] Re: Firefox's very slow
I just recently started having the same problem. I'm using a similar setup to the original poster Core2Duo / 3 GB RAM / nVidia 8600GT Firefox 2.0.12 Kubuntu 3.5 with all updates Firefox has worked fine for a couple months and then something occurred recently. Not sure exactly when but perhaps within the last 4 days. There was an update for my kubuntu system during that time. I forgot what libraries were updated. Could be the cause. I don't remember the problem right after the 2.0.12 update but I could be wrong. Firefox is very slow especially during tab switches... about 1--2 seconds to switch.. [Bug 165155] Re: firefox crashes frequently in Gutsy
I have also experienced Firefox stability issues in Gutsy. I believe the problem does not lie in Firefox. Here's my summary: Installed 64-bit Kubuntu 7.10 System and Firefox were ROCK solid. Never crashed or froze for weeks of use. Installed 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10 Whole system was shaky but Firefox was very unstable and would crash or freeze every 10 or 20 minutes on average. Reinstalled 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10... system much better for whatever reason... Firefox much better too but still crashes usually by freezing every 3 or 4 hours of use. I use Firefox on many systems and platforms and suspect the problem is not with Firefox itself but with Gutsy somehow. -- firefox crashes frequently in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/165155 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
