[Bug 1066103] [NEW] NVIDIA blue (aka smurf) video problem is still an issue on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

2012-10-12 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

Video is still blue using NVIDIA cards on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

I have no idea how to fix this. The web is clogged with bad advice and
out-of-date solutions. Turning off hardware acceleration fixes the issue
but is a totally inadequate work around. The CPU gets insanely hot and
the fan screams like a dying child during video. The other solutions
floating around (like messing with the Flash config files) don't seem to
work, nor does updating to latest version of flash.

This is a top priority issue and it has been around for over a year now.

[Bug 1021525] Re: Resume from suspend has stopped working on Dell Inspiron 1720... computer freezes

2012-08-22 Thread jasonq
This bug appears to have gone now that I'm running
304.37-0ubuntu1~lucid~xup1 of the Nvidia driver. I installed this update
a few days ago. (August 20, 2012). My guess is that it was an Nvidia-
related regression which is now fixed. I haven't been using suspend for
several nvidia-updates now so this version of the driver is only an
bound on when the actual regression was fixed.

[Bug 1021525] [NEW] Resume from suspend has stopped working on Dell Inspiron 1720... computer freezes

2012-07-05 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

Closing the laptop lid appears to put the laptop in suspend mode. But it
will not wake up. The same thing occurs if pm-hibernate is used from the
command line. I have been using various forms of Ubuntu and Kubuntu on
this laptop for many years and never had a problem until recently (about
a month ago) so the likely culprit was in a recent kernel update.

[Bug 723798] [NEW] Embedded terminal plugin does not work

2011-02-23 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

At least for my 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (fully up-to-date)
the embedded terminal plugin does not work. The terminal pane (aka
bottom pane) is able to be shown and hidden but it does nothing except
show a blinking cursor that does not show a prompt or accept keyboard
input. (actually once in a blue moon a key stroke enters a letter).

Google finds other people having the same problem. My problem is not
however the white text on white background problem.

[Bug 410072] [NEW] A middle mouse button paste in gedit does not move cursor to insertion point

2009-08-06 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Use the middle mouse button to paste highlight-selected text does not
move the cursor (and the viewed text) to the chosen insertion point.
This is dangerous when the selected text and the insertion point are far
apart because the user is left unsure if the paste succeeded until
scrolling to the insertion point (which can be difficult to refind in a
long document or in source code).

I am using the gedit in Ubuntu 9.04. I believe this to be a fairly
recent regression as I seem to recall it working just a few months ago
as I expect. I have tried deleting the gedit config directory and the
behavior persists. I turn on most of the plugins available by default
but that doesn't seem to be the cause.

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2009-07-06 Thread jasonq
Bug still occurs on Ubuntu 9.04 with NVIDIA driver 180.44.

I haven't seen the bug as frequently as in the past but it's still there
and still happens with the testcase I posted where you pull the top of a
terminal down after a clear command.

I don't want to try a more recent driver because I'm using a production
machine and the last time I used the NVIDIA installer it borked my
dependencies.

[Bug 305606] Re: NetworkManager applet says No valid active connections found!

2009-05-25 Thread jasonq
Aurélien Couderc's solution caused problems for me.

After changing managed to true, networking was half broken (ping would
work but not Netscape).

Restoring

/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf

to its original version did not solve the problem. After a while the
problem turned out to be that Network Manager had blanked the

/etc/resolv.conf

file. I restored the information and I'm back to where I started. NM
still doesn't work.

[Bug 242013] Re: First Import Folder reports Operation not supported

2009-05-20 Thread jasonq
I don't think this is fixed.

I have Rhythmbox 0.12.0 on a fully updated Ubuntu 9.04. Starting
Rhythmbox fresh (that is after deleting the rhythmbox directory in
.gnome2) I get the error that it the folder contents could not be
displayed. The reason is that it is looking in my home directory for a
folder called music. It keeps looking in the music directory
regardless of the folder I spectify for my music in Preferences. My
music is stored in a directory called Music, with the capital 'M' as
is the current Gnome naming convention.

[Bug 363592] Re: for UNR 9.04 RC, sound doesn't work out-of-box on HP 1030nr netbook

2009-05-10 Thread jasonq
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 318942 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318942

UPDATE: We solved this bug completely in another thread (which could
have been marked a duplicate instead of getting set as incomplete). See
Mauricio Marambio's comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-
remix/+bug/318942/comments/63 in Bug #318942 https://bugs.launchpad.net
/netbook-remix/+bug/318942 for a complete step by step fix. Since his
post, a 1.0.20 point release of ALSA has occurred so use alsa-
driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2 instead of alsa-driver-1.0.19.tar.bz2 and so
forth.

A general review of UNR for HP1030NR users: everything works really
great. The webcam is a little dark and requires bright light. The
netbook came with Windows XP which I found to run pretty slow. UNR runs
better but there is still lag sometimes when opening apps or even right
click menus. However overall I think it is a decent machine for the
money. I returned my first one because it had a screen defect. My second
one's left mouse button could have used a stiffer clicking mechanism but
oh well.

[Bug 366846] [NEW] Mouse wheel on Targus AMU18US mouse (USB) non-functional

2009-04-25 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

The mouse wheel does not scroll, and the mouse wheel clicks do nothing
on the model #AMU18US mouse by Targus. It's a simple USB mouse. I am
using UNR 9.04. This mouse is a cheap piece of junk that I'm going to
throw away but it's important because it's the free mouse that comes
with the Targus netbook carrying case, which is the carrying case I was
recommended by Best Buy personnel. (Not that that means anything in
terms of advice but there's probably a large percentage of netbook
customers that might end up with this mouse because of the shear size of
the Best Buy market.

[Bug 318942] Re: no sound from speakers on HP Mini 1000 (hda-intel, IDT 92HD75B2X5)

2009-04-23 Thread jasonq
Everything can be made to work on the HP 1030NR including sound and the
internal mic.

Assuming a fresh install of UNR 9.04, you'll want to install the
packages patch, gettext, and libncurses-dev before compiling the three
ALSA modules as described above in Mauricio's comment. In volume
control, you'll want to set the input sources to line and front mic
for the HDA Intel (Alsa mixer). Make sure your volumes are not set too
low after a reboot, you're off and running.

[Bug 363592] [NEW] for UNR 9.04 RC, sound doesn't work out-of-box on HP 1030nr netbook

2009-04-18 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

I installed the UNR 9.04 RC on an HP 1030nr netbook. The good news is
nearly everything works great and I was really impressed with UNR both
functionally and aesthetically. The bad news is that for the HP 1030nr
netbook, the sound did not work out of the box. Basically to fix the
problem I had to compile and use the latest version of ALSA.

To get the sound working, I used the information available on several
bug threads for the HP netbooks.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997590
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=996724
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/57848

However no individual solution worked, and after trying them all several
times and I had given up. I discovered however upon the (strangely, not
the first, but the second) reboot after giving up that the sound was in
fact now working. So *some* combination of recompiling the latest ALSA
drivers (although the utils never completely 100% successfully) and
fiddling with the volume controls as discussed in those threads managed
to solve the problem.

Needless to say, having sound trouble made the release feel very 1999
for linux. I'm quite experienced with computers and compiling my own
software, so if I had trouble then most people would not be able to fix
it.

[Bug 337780] Re: cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system

2009-04-03 Thread jasonq
There's no error from the applet. There's nothing worth taking a screen
shot. It applet just simply doesn't change the frequency. If you need
more information, how about asking Could you post the output of the
__ file after trying to switch the frequency? or some other
question that helps get the bug diagnosed instead of blaming the
reporter. It's insulting to keep saying the bug report is poor when I
already explained why it is not.

The devs at launchpad seem to fling around closing this bug report
because it lacks the information even when the lacks information part
is false. This policy alienates reporters. Instead of blaming bug
reporters by saying the bug report is poor, the close message should be,
We are closing the bug because we have too few people and too many open
bugs. That's still a bad policy but at least it's truthful and doesn't
run the risk of false accusing someone of poor submissions.

A few points:
1) Bugs do not rot. If it's policy to close them early, it's a bad one.
2) Even a poorly reported bug can evolve into a good submission with time.
3) Users will provide missing information if you ask.
4) They will be offended if you call their submissions poor.
5) They will be really offended if the submission is not poor but people keep
saying so like Chatty-Kathy dolls.
6) Bug reporters might end up quitting their submissions.

[Bug 337780] Re: cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system

2009-04-02 Thread jasonq
Why do the bugs at launchpad get closed so quickly? Bugs do not rot. I
didn't even realize there was activity on the bug and 30 days isn't all
that much time to respond anyway.

I also don't understand why this bug was being closed because I did post
what appears to be the proper information (Before I submitted my bug, I
even found other bugs with comments saying what I posted is the
information that is needed). The followup question doesn't even make
much sense: 1) I said which program, the cpu frequency scaling monitor
and 2) There's nothing to take a screenshot of that illuminates
anything. If you don't know what the cpu scaling monitor is, how can you
decide the importance of the bug is low?

[Bug 346111] Re: my microsoft bluetooth notebook mouse 5000 doesnt work under Ubuntu 9.04, (it works well in Ubuntu 8.10)

2009-03-27 Thread jasonq
My Microsoft 5000 Bluetooth mouse also does not work under Ubuntu 9.04
(i386 desktop beta). I only semi-works under 8.10. In 8.10 the mouse is
found and will connect. But after a reboot, it doesn't work and I have
to delete the entry and reconnect. In 9.04, it detects the mouse and
even says it connects but the connection is never really made.

The Microsoft 5000 Bluetooth mouse has trouble on 8.10 (won't reconnect
after a boot, and you have to delete the entry and reconnect) and it
doesn't connect at all in 9.04 beta.

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2009-01-29 Thread jasonq
Added video showing problem and also shows that I am not using
restricted nvidia drivers.

The clear and drag top is not the only way this problem occurs. The
bug occurs during regular use without resizing the window but I have not
found a way to reproduce that.

The video is a little jumpy in part. It was make with recordmydesktop
and is in ogg format.

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2009-01-20 Thread jasonq
It has the information needed to investigate the problem. I posted it
but nobody refered to it. Here it is again:

1) Open a gnome-terminal
2) execute a clear command
4) When the window is resized by pulling the *top* of the window down below
where the cursor was, the prompt will become invisible. (There are similar
problems with resizing using the bottom of the window.)

This is still a problem and it occurs on two completely different
machines. It's a major bug.

2008-10-24 Thread jasonq
I've had this occur at least 4 times over the last month. Twice it lead
to the loss of work in progress.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 fully updated. It has always occurred with Firefox
(last with 3.0.3) when I quickly click on the minimize button (every
time however I knew I was making a bad click, e.g., on the edge of the
minimize box or making a right click by mistake... that may be
important). I don't know if the problem is limited to Firefox though. I
use it the most so it could just be a selection effect. I cannot
reproduce the crash when X restarts so maybe Firefox has to have been
running for a while first?

Here's the relevant line from my /var/log/syslog:
Oct 24 13:48:38 aries gdm[6398]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X
error - Restarting :0

I'm not too experienced debugging issues like this, so if somebody in
the know gives a list of things to put here the next time I experience
the crash, I can help you debug this.

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2008-07-12 Thread jasonq
Neither Compiz nor my dual monitor setup worked with the free drivers.
(The xorg.conf file also got screwed up after switching drivers. I'm
afraid to try more driver tests now that I have everything running again
because this is my work machine.)

I did, however, figure out a pattern for a small reproducible test case
that can cause the type of problem I reported.

1) Open a gnome-terminal
2) execute a clear command
3) if you want you can do an ls or just have the prompt at the top of the
window
4) When the window is resized by pulling the top of the window down below where
the cursor was, the prompt will become invisible. (There are similar problems
with resizing using the bottom of the window.)

If you see the problem, try it without doing the clear command. For
me, no bug occurs. Perhaps there is something about the clear command
that permanently screws up a terminal. I tested this with both the
desktop cube and plane plugins and it was the same result; so this not
just a plugin specific bug but something more basic. Now that clear is
a suspect, I'll try to notice if problems *only occur* in windows in
which clear has been executed (probably not but we'll see).

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2008-07-02 Thread jasonq
Thanks, Mike for your attention to this issue. I am using restricted
drivers and the output of lspci gives

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev
a1)

as my video card. My laptop's video card is also nVidia (but an 8600)
and I was also using restricted drivers.

[Bug 244356] Re: terminal output frequently not current or blank

2008-07-01 Thread jasonq
Hi, Mike. It seems impossible to construct a testcase regarding this
bug. I've been trying to notice a pattern for weeks now. You can just
sit there typing ls over and over and occasionally the output will not
show properly. My guess is that there is some sort of time syncing issue
going on between X and compiz. It happens in gnome-terminal and also
xterm windows. It does seem to be more frequent in the xterms than in
the gnome-terminals. But there's also a distinct other behavior where
sometimes windows that were covered up do not show their text upon re-
display. The cause of this may be different but it too is
unreproducible: same conditions... different results.

Is it a problem with the terminal program? Probably not. I've never seen
this behavior in years of using these programs and I've used them for
years. Only when compiz is running.

I think best thing to do is wait to see if other people are experiencing
this and go from there. I'll look into making a video of the problem
sometime in a week'ish when I get a chance. It's not easy to explain in
words.

I guess I could mention that I am using the desktop cube, wobbly

haven't found an exact sequence that always reproduces the problem, the
best way to start debugging this would be to find other users
experiencing a similar problem.

[Bug 244356] [NEW] terminal output frequently not current or blank

2008-06-30 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When using compiz (at least on the Ubuntu (Gutsy and now Heron)),
terminals frequently (every few minutes with several windows open) do
not display their text properly. For example, terminal windows that were
covered by other windows sometimes show only the window background
(e.g., black). Using the window's scrollbar makes the text pop back.
Also when scripts are running, the final displayed output at the end is
frequently a mixture of old text with the last line only being proper.

There's not much more I can elaborate on as the behavior is
unpredictable. This is a very severe problem as it affects usability of
the computer.

[Bug 204463] Re: Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.

2008-06-11 Thread jasonq
Yes. It is working out-of-the-box. I've had no problems with the
connection at all. I was using a 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10 in my first post
and now I've switched to a 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04; so several variables have
changed. As the original reporter of this bug I would be comfortable
saying that the newer version of Ubuntu appears not to have a problem
and there exists a work-a-round for the older ones (compiling) therefore
I would be okay with the bug being resolved as fixed.

[Bug 204463] Re: Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.

2008-04-16 Thread jasonq
Here's an update because Hardy is so near release. I finally downloaded
a copy of hardy-desktop-amd64.iso (beta). Unfortunately I am unable to
connect to the wireless network using it. This could simply be because
the network was out of IP addresses (only class B on a campus) or for
technical reasons. I was too fed up at this point to tinker anymore.

I decided to try to compile the iwlwifi-1.2.25 driver along with the
mac80211-10.0.4 subsystem. After a lot of frustration and many Google
searches I gave up because make for both complains that it can't find
a Makefile in my kernel directory (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/).
Other people have had this problem too. I installed a ton of stuff
trying to see if I was missing packages it needed but nothing helped. I
wasn't about to go diving into code to fix the problem.

So instead I downloaded compat-wireless-2008-04-08 and to my utter shock
and astonishment it compiled with no problems. I've been running under
it for a day and a half down without the fatal crashes I originally
reported. The problem may have a workaround. I'll post an update in a
few days when I know for sure.

[Bug 204463] Re: Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.

2008-04-13 Thread jasonq
Thanks for the prompt reply, Leann. I'm working on downloading Hardy
8.04 beta to test it. I'm in Chile with a very slow connection that
literally takes days to download the iso and my first attempt stopped
after 450 out of 690 MB.

In the meantime, here is my 'modinfo iwl3945' info. I've been
considering downloading the iwlwifi drivers. I recently replaced my
'iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode' file with another one from
'iwlwifi-3945-ucode-2.14.1.5.tgz'. Strangely the files had exactly the
same size but differed. There was no difference in performance after the
replacement. I changed the file back to the original for now; so this is
the setup that a clean install of Kubuntu 7.10 provides (I allowed it to
use proprietary drivers).

[Bug 204463] [NEW] Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable. Prevents proper shutdown.

2008-03-20 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. It came with a Intel 3945 WLAN
(802.11a/g) wireless mini card. I use Kubuntu 7.10. The network works
fine for about 6 hours on average and then it will drop the wireless
connection. About three-quarters of the time, you cannot reconnect and
trying to do so freezes the Knetworkmanager tray icon. Even worse, you
cannot easily shutdown your machine. After logging out it pauses
indefinitely and you have to hit the power button which causes the
machine to make some progress before freezing again. Then it is
permanently stuck until you do a hard powerdown (via the 10-second hold
on an Inspiron).

It seems like the 3945 has quite a number of different bugs (none of
which exactly match my experience). This is an important card. Kubuntu
uses a PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection for this card. I can
post further information upon request.

[Bug 190228] Re: Firefox's very slow

2008-02-24 Thread jasonq
I just recently started having the same problem. I'm using a similar
setup to the original poster

Core2Duo / 3 GB RAM / nVidia 8600GT
Firefox 2.0.12
Kubuntu 3.5 with all updates

Firefox has worked fine for a couple months and then something occurred
recently. Not sure exactly when but perhaps within the last 4 days.
There was an update for my kubuntu system during that time. I forgot
what libraries were updated. Could be the cause. I don't remember the
problem right after the 2.0.12 update but I could be wrong.

Firefox is very slow especially during tab switches... about 1--2
seconds to switch.. Very annoying.

[Bug 165155] Re: firefox crashes frequently in Gutsy

2008-01-30 Thread jasonq
I have also experienced Firefox stability issues in Gutsy. I believe the
problem does not lie in Firefox. Here's my summary:

Installed 64-bit Kubuntu 7.10 System and Firefox were ROCK solid.
Never crashed or froze for weeks of use.

Installed 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10 Whole system was shaky but Firefox was
very unstable and would crash or freeze every 10 or 20 minutes on
average.

Reinstalled 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10... system much better for whatever
reason... Firefox much better too but still crashes usually by freezing
every 3 or 4 hours of use.

I use Firefox on many systems and platforms and suspect the problem is
not with Firefox itself but with Gutsy somehow.
