Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) reached end-of-life on April 10, 2012.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

Please
I would like to expound on Ypthor's comment...
enablling flat-volume moves the master volume to the volume level of the
loudest/higest app -- ie: it moves the slider for you when the app
starts. This is a problem if you set all apps to be 100% as everything
will be 100% (not good if you intend to
I'd like to note that while enabling flat volumes (by commenting flat-
volume=no) evades this particular issue, the problem with 'non-flat
volumes mode' is still there.

Ahh, finally a fix for this long lasting annoyance!
I can confirm that on my machine using on-board audio digital out that
doing the edit in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and to comment out flat-
volumes is a fix.

Glad it worked!
@David, what can be added to get the status changed from invalid? I
don't want to see this report disappear as it's about the only place
with a solution to this bug.

I have been affected by this in both 10.10 and 11.04. I was hoping it
would be fixed in Natty, but since it's not, I tried both solutions in
this bug report.
Editing /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf to
change the Element Speaker entry to volume = merge and rebooting didn't
Yes, only disabling flat-volume = no does the trick.
my configuration looks like this:
resample-method = speex-float-1
; flat-volumes = no
default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 10
didn't do any other changes and it works.

I think it is the flat-volumes = no that is the difference, not the
other lines. Can you verify?

I can confirm this. I have pretty much the same configuration:

I'm no longer the owner of the computer this bug effects so I wont be
able to test anymore ideas, adding a ; and a space to the 4 lines listed
in my post above has worked in both 10.10 and 11.04 both before and
after updates, so I'd suggest anyone else effected too try it.

Hmm, I think this line found in pulseverbose.log is part of the puzzle:
D: alsa-mixer.c: Some paths of the device lack hardware volume control,
disabling hardware control altogether.
As a workaround, you might try to edit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-
mixer/paths/analog-output.conf
Change this:

Ok today I did a fresh install of 10.10, made the chances above and got
the same results. :D

Ok here's the log you asked for, also just encase... the first time I
ran it I accidentally forgot to move the volume slider... so after a
restart I ran the log again but I didn't delete the log from the first
run, it modified the file so hopefully it doesn't matter, if it does
I'll do it again.

Never finished that sentence: I need either a PulseAudio log according
to #14, or possibly the output of "pactl list" before and after.

PulseAudio packaging in Debian and Ubuntu isn't shared currently. Natty
ships with 0.9.22+stable-queue whereas Debian sid is using 0.9.21 based
PulseAudio AFAIK. It's two different versions of Pulseaudio.
My idea is that I need either a PulseAudio log according to #14.

You received this bug n
pulseaudio is working flawless in Debian Sid, it has to be a Ubuntu
patch that's causing this, I have no idea what I'm doing but is there
any way to look at what exactly Ubuntu add's to Pulse? Also is there
anyway to remove the patches... I'm guessing this would probably break a
lot of stuff though
Ah I see, that makes sense, ok I checked Pulseaudio's volume level
before and after the bug in ALSAmixer and surprise surprise the bug
wasn't reflected, it showed the correct volume level before and after
the bug just like the volume-applet.
It does but not for the Headset, same in both Ubuntu and
Ok, thanks for testing.
The pulseaudio alsa-plugin mixer was disabled because it didn't add much value
as it was adding confusion. You can see its current value with this terminal
command: "pactl list" - scroll down to the "Sink" section.
In both Fedora and Ubuntu, moving the PulseAudio volume
Installed Natty 32-bit Alpha 2, ran all the updates which included the
ALSA update and the problem is still present.
I've been looking into this more... not exactly sure how all this works
so bare with me, but I noticed on Fedora if I go into ALSA mixer there
is three cards to choose from, Default
We have recently done an update of ALSA in Natty, the development
version of Ubuntu. Would it be possible for you to test this version and
see if the problem is still present? Thanks!

Ok so after disabling Pulseaudio and switching to ALSA using this guide:
http://www.jeffsplace.net/node/12
After a couple extra tweaks sound is working pretty much perfect, the
bug is gone. I think this confirms that the bug is in PulseAudio and
since no other distro's are effected it's something
Noticed one other thing... hope this all makes sense... I think the
volume is defaulting to max, the reason I thought the issue was fixed
was because for some reason ALSAmixer was set to 0 and the volume slider
was set to max after running the log, because ALSAmixer was at 0 max on
the volume slide
Ok after a fresh install I'm getting similar results but after further
examination it's not fixed, it's been improved but not fixed. For some
reason the jump is much smaller now, still a noticeable difference but
not nearly as much as it was.

Ok I ran the log once but thought I made a mistake, so I went to do it
again but the bug was gone. As far as I can tell some how the bug is
fixed, I didn't do any updates and it was happening earlier today so I'm
guessing it has something to do with the log, gonna do a fresh install
then run throug
Hmm, could it be a PulseAudio problem then? There are instructions for how to
create a log here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log but that log would
only be helpful if
1) volume is loud immediately after having restarted pulseaudio
2) you can move the slider, that fixes the problem, and you
I disabled onboard ALC888 via the BIOS about a month ago so that's why
it's missing now, if needed I can re-enable it and run alsa-info before
and after again. I'm not entirely sure about the HDMI out at the moment
but it defiantly effects both onboard ALC888 and USB Headset.
In sound preferences
Hmm...on your original post you have three sound outputs:
1) onboard ALC888
2) usb headset
3) HDMI out
But on your second post, there doesn't seem to be an ALC888 at all -
only USB headset and HDMI out?
Could you clarify if this problem is related to all sound cards or only
one of them (which one

Ok this is a fresh 32-bit 10.10 install,
alsa-info1.txt... is right after log in
alsa-info2.txt... is right after slight movement of volume slider
Some new info, I tried experimenting some more and found un-muting

Hmm, I'm trying to figure out in what order things happen here. In
principle we have four things that can set the volume:
1) HDA driver initialization
2) /sbin/alsa-utils mixer restore script
3) gdm's pulseaudio
4) logged in user's pulseaudio.
Is the volume loud on the login screen as well?
Thanks for replying,
ignore_dB = 1 was part of a fix for another sound bug that's pretty
popular, it's not the same as this one and doesn't effect this computer
but I figured it was worth a shot since the bugs are sorta similar, it
made no difference, sorry if I would of remembered I changed that
Hi Aaddron, and thanks for your bug report.
It seems like you have added ignore_dB = 1 to your default.pa. Could you
elaborate on that? Did it affect this issue in any way?

Just an update, Mint 10 is affected, Mint Debian and Debian 6 RC1
aren't. Have tried a few more non-ubuntu distros since this report and
still can't find another distro that is effected. Also I filed this bug
against pulseaudio but I'm not completely sure if it's correct, if
anyone that knows more
Issue still appears in 11.04 Alpha 1, gonna check on Mint 10 soon. Tried
the latest Fedora without issue. Gonna try Debian 6 once it's released
too, so far it still looks like this is a Ubuntu specific issue.
