I would like to expound on Ypthor's comment... enablling flat-volume moves the master volume to the volume level of the loudest/higest app -- ie: it moves the slider for you when the app starts. This is a problem if you set all apps to be 100% as everything will be 100% (not good if you intend to

Ok here's the log you asked for, also just encase... the first time I ran it I accidentally forgot to move the volume slider... so after a restart I ran the log again but I didn't delete the log from the first run, it modified the file so hopefully it doesn't matter, if it does I'll do it again. *

PulseAudio packaging in Debian and Ubuntu isn't shared currently. Natty ships with 0.9.22+stable-queue whereas Debian sid is using 0.9.21 based PulseAudio AFAIK. It's two different versions of Pulseaudio. My idea is that I need either a PulseAudio log according to #14. -- You received this bug n

pulseaudio is working flawless in Debian Sid, it has to be a Ubuntu patch that's causing this, I have no idea what I'm doing but is there any way to look at what exactly Ubuntu add's to Pulse? I think the volume is defaulting to max, the reason I thought the issue was fixed was because for some reason ALSAmixer was set to 0 and the volume slider was set to max after running the log, because ALSAmixer was at 0 max on the volume slide

I disabled onboard ALC888 via the BIOS about a month ago so that's why it's missing now, if needed I can re-enable it and run alsa-info before and after again. I'm not entirely sure about the HDMI out at the moment but it defiantly effects both onboard ALC888 and USB Headset. In sound preferences

Hmm, I'm trying to figure out in what order things happen here. In principle we have four things that can set the volume: 1) HDA driver initialization 2) /sbin/alsa-utils mixer restore script 3) gdm's pulseaudio 4) logged in user's pulseaudio. Is the volume loud on the login screen as well?
