IconGravity vs Margins in Buttons

2017-02-20 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’ve been messing with using a variety of fonts in buttons coupled with a round
icon.

It’s handy to set the iconGravity of the button to “center” and have the text
of the button line up nicely with the icon. However, I’ve noticed that some
fonts don’t line up in the center of the icon.

I’ve set the textAlign of the button to “center”
I’ve set the iconGravity of the button to “center”

Is there a way besides using textAlign to adjust only the placement of the text
of the button separately from the icon? I’m thinking of something like in
spreadsheet cells that have the left, right, center and top, middle, bottom
settings.

In this case, I’d like to move the text down relative to the button icon… the
textAlign will move the text left or right without moving the icon. Is there a
way to move the text down without moving the icon down?

I’ve tried messing with “margins,” but changing those settings moves the text
and the icon.

I’m using LC 8.1.2
Mac OS 10.11.6

Thanks for any thoughts.

be well,
randy

Re: IconGravity vs Margins in Buttons

2017-02-21 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Bob,

Thanks for the response… I’ve messed with the margin settings. For example,
0,12,0,0 does move the text down realtive to the top of the button, but it also
moves the icon down… I really need to just adjust the text…. I’d like to be
able to set something like “textHeight” in a field for buttons.

be well,
randy

They didn’t say…. here’s a quotation from their response to me:

”An issue was detected with the apps and we have made the necessary
corrections."

I’m pretty darn sure I did all the right things… so, something on their end, I
guess.

[OT] Download Request

2017-01-11 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I successfully had three iOS apps approved for sale by Apple on Jan 8th. So far
they have not shown up on the Apple App Store… when I check on them via iTunes
Connect all things seem to be in order, but when I click on “Show in iTunes” it
says the app isn’t available in the U.S. store… and, well, I’m in the U.S….

Is anyone outside of the U.S willing to check for me to see if you can download
the app? It’s iPad only and call “Number Tile Fill Up” … it’s free.

I have contacted iTunes “help” but thought I’d see if I could gather a bit of
data before they respond.

Thanks in advance for your help.

iOS plist concern from Apple

2017-04-14 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’ve just received an email from apple that indicated a plist problem:
”We are reaching out to you because we were unable to process your latest build
uploads due to bad binaries. Specifically, your plists had an empty
perBinaryResults key"

When I open the plist from the build, I don’t see any key named
“perBinaryResults.”

The apps referenced in the email were approved (processed) without issue 5 and
6 weeks ago. I have no idea what they message is referring to. As of right now,
I don’t have any idea what to even ask apple… nor, how to fix the issue.

My only “new” thing was to add a font … first time I’ve done so and I included
the font with all of the apps listed in the email from apple.

I didn’t make note as to whether I used LC 8.1.0 or 8.1.2 to build the app for
submission.

Thanks for any thoughts you can share.

be well,
randy

Thank you, Panos. I hadn't seen that thread… but, another thought. Since I’ve
included a font for the first time, I’ve been looking at that as a possible
issue.

I included the font in the app using the Copy Files pane of the Settings. Is
there something I was supposed to reference in the “Font Mapping File” box of
the iOS pane?

Re: Distinguishing between tap and swipe

2017-03-10 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi BR,

I’ve not used swipe a lot, but here is how I have used it to “erase” from a
text field… the app is iOS iPad only. Below is the script of the text field.
It works quickly without a noticeable delay.

local tStartLocX, tEndLocX

on mouseDown
put the short name of target into tTargetFieldToClear
put item 1 the mouseLoc into tStartLocX
end mouseDown

on mouseUp
   lock screen

put item 1 the mouseLoc into tEndLocX

   if tEndLocX + 10 < tStartLocX then
  put empty into target
   end if

   unlock screen
end mouseUp

Re: Dragging widgets

2017-02-28 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
I’ve not messed with widgets at all… but, with graphics in this situation I
would either put

on mouseDown
 grab me
end mouseDown

in the group script…

OR put

on mouseDown
 grab the owner of me
end mouseDown

in the script of each object within the group.

Sort with two sortTypes

2017-04-08 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’m working an app to facilitate the development of student class schedules.

Right now there are three items for each course that I’d like to sort in
various ways: CourseName, Time, Days. The information is placed in that order
in a field for display.

It’s easy to sort on any one of the items. For example….
sort lines of field "FIRSTyear_FALL" by item 1 of each

sort lines of field "FIRSTyear_FALL" dateTime by item 2 of each

sort lines of field "FIRSTyear_FALL" by item 3 of each

But I can’t figure out how to sort first on item 3, Days and then by item 2,
Time. My goal is sort by matching Days and then by time in ascending order. The
courses meeting on the same day would be grouped together by time earliest to
latest. A sort does take place, but it’s text. I’ve not figured out how/where
to place the dateTime sortType when combining a sort on item 3 and item 2.

Here’s the basic line of script… where does “dateTime” go? I’ve tried placing
it in all the points of the line that I can think of….
sort lines of field "FIRSTyear_FALL" by item 3 of each & item 2 of each

The dictionary under “Sort Container” suggests what I want to do is possible:
The sort container command is a stable sort. This means that if the sortKey for
two items or lines is the same, sorting does not change their order, so you can
do two successive sorts to create subcategories within the major sort
categories.
Tip: To create a custom sort order, use the each keyword to pass each line or
item to a custom function. The value returned by the function is used as the
sort key for that line or item. It is not currently possible to debug custom
sort functions, and doing so could make the IDE unstable. It is recommended to
use logging messages instead.
The information in the “LiveCode Resource Center” doesn’t include an example of
sorting on two criteria.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can share.

randy

putting both of the handlers into a “run” handler:

Re: MouseDown sent to button in group, but MouseUp sent to card

I’d start by double-checking that there is a mouseUp handler in the button. If
there isn’t, then the mouseUp will move to the group… if no mouseUp in the
group it will move to the card.

I've wanted this for years. There is half a way to do it, but it's very
limited. Right click on a handler name in calling handler and choose "go to
definition". It will scroll to the handler in the script or open a new
script tab if necessary. The orginal start position in the handler list
remains hilited so you can find it again easily.

But it's far from perfect. If you click anywhere in the new handler, the
list selection changes. And it only works for one hop. But even that much
is useful for a quick check on what a particular handler does.

[OT] iOS Alert

Hi All,

Several of my iOS apps are displaying this alert:

 “AppName” Needs to Be
Updated.
This app will not work with future
versions of iOS. The developer of this
app needs to update it to improve its
compatibility.

I don’t remember which version of LC I used to build these apps… is this a 32
bit issue that is now addressed with builds using LC 8.1.x?

Re: OT: Has anybody experiences with apps for VPP licenses?

2017-06-10 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Tiemo,

I assume you mean Volume Purchase Program for Education… right?

I’ve set all of my apps to be available with the “education discount” you just
check the appropriate radio button when setting the price of the app … the
education institutions must have an account with Apple… and, if they buy at
least 20 copies of an app, the apps are “half price” based on the price you
set. My paid apps are listed at $.99 (US) and then are discounted to $.49
automatically when the educational institution buys at least 20 copies.

They way I’ve done this is to select the whole group before copying… tuning on
“Select Group” rather than the individual controls. That has worked fine…
scripts are kept.

It doesn’t change your question, but you don’t need ‘into me’ at the end each
line

put "four" into word 1 of me

put space & "help" after word 1 of me

Re: Bad Crash on Attempt to Group Radio Buttons

2017-08-28 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
I would find it very handy if when the cantSelect is true, you could still drag
to select objects that are above the control with cantSelect true…

In other words, the ability to select the other controls with click and drag
when the initial click is within the rect of the control (usually a grc for me)
that has cantSelect set to true.

It certainly is possible to select the controls above the control with
cantSelect true… but only if the initial click is outside that rect.

I hope all of that makes sense.

iOS Application Loader

2018-06-29 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’ve been trying to send off an app to Apple using Application Loader. I’ve
used it for all previous submissions.

It seems to two factor change has caused issues. I’m stuck in a loop of
passwords.

Anyone successfully used Application Loader in the past month or two?

Re: Open source iOS and Android

Hi Linda,

To best of my knowledge, you can’t use the Community version to build apps for
iOS. So, the source code isn’t automatically available from developers… but,
within the IDE of LiveCode, select the Sample Stacks… all sorts of options
there with code available for viewing.

Re: Mac app code signing for beginners

2018-04-29 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Bill,

Sounds like you’re loading your apps to your iPhone and iPad via the Xcode
Devices and Simulators window… apps loaded in that way will cease to work when
your provisioning profile expires. As far as I know (and have experienced),
that is the “normal” way it works.

However, those same apps if approved by Apple and made available in the App
Store will not cease to work when the profile you used to make the app
expires.

be well,
randy

Re: Play WAV audio clips in iOS

2018-01-06 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Roger,

WAV files do work on iOS. I use them regularly.

I bring the wav files into the app using the Copy Files tab in the Standalone
Applications Settings.

Then when you call the sound with the play command making sure you’ve spelled
the name exactly the way you’ve brought it into your app.

upper/lower case in the wav file name matters.

Re: Play WAV audio clips in iOS

2018-01-06 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
The wav file is imported via the Copy File tab…the wav file is not a control.

The path is then listed in the copy files window… for example:
/Users/randyhengst/Desktop/iOS App SOUNDS and ICON folders/FingerGloveCounting
ICONS/0.wav

In this case, the name of my wav file is “0.wav”

So in a control you call the play command… for example:
play specialFolderPath("engine") &"/"& “0.wav"

I’ve used buttons, graphic objects, and images as the control.

If you change the location of the wav file or the location of the .livecode
file you’re working after importing via the Copy Files tab, you’ll need to
change the path or the wav file won’t be found when building your standalone.

In case you’re interested, here is a link to one of my free iOS apps that plays
wav files via buttons:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/number-id/id642054717?mt=8

Yes, Tore, thank you for that from me too…now play audioClip does ring a bell.

I must have used it at some point. But as I mentioned in an earlier response,

Re: Play WAV audio clips in iOS

2018-01-06 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Roger,

Sorry, but I have no idea. I’ve only used wav files added via the Copy Files
pane for sound. In fact, I can’t even say I remember seeing the audio file
under import as control.

Re: Feature proposal: mobileActualAllowedOrientations?

2018-01-28 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
All of my apps are iOS only. And virtually all are landscape only. When the
iPhone is set to portrait lock, my apps still open as landscape orientation…
that’s how they were designed. I wouldn’t want the user to have to take the
extra steps to unlock the orientation.

II do have a couple apps that are in portrait orientation only. When the user
has the device in landscape, the app still opens as portrait.

iOS Submission -- Invalid Binary

2018-01-28 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’ve just submitted an iPad-only iOS app using
MacOS 10.12.6
LC 8.1.3
Xcode 8.2.1.

I received this from Apple:
--
Dear developer,

We have discovered one or more issues with your recent delivery for "Finger
Glove COUNTING". To process your delivery, the following issues must be
corrected:

Invalid Binary - The app contains one or more corrupted binaries. Rebuild the
app and resubmit.

--

Does that mean I need to change my LC/Xcode combination used for the build?

As I reviewed list comments, I saw a reference to using Xcode 9.2 when
submitted for the new iPhone X… this app doesn’t do that.

Thanks for any thoughts.

acceleratedRendering

2018-08-01 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

Given what we’re heard about iOS12 problems with LC apps… and the suggestion
that setting acceleratedRendering to true in preOpenStack “solves” that issue
with iOS12, I’ve been messing around with acceleratedRendering for the current
LC project I’m developing for iOS. I have not used acceleratedRendering in so
long, consider me unknowledgeable about its use.

I’m working with LC 9.0.1 RC1 with MacOS 10.12.6 and Xcode 9.2. But, I've seen
essentially the same results when building with LC8.1.8, 9.0.0

When setting acceleratedRendering to true in preOpenStack as shared in an
earlier message, the IDE slows to a crawl. When setting acceleratedRendering to
false, the IDE returns to normal responsiveness.
— is that the expected behavior?

When loaded on my iPad, the app I’m working on has shown partial screen updates
with acceleratedRendering on… and with some aspects has actually slowed to a
crawl when loaded onto an iPad.

To check this out, I’ve included buttons to set acceleratedRendering to true
and false so I can change the setting when the app is loaded on my iPad… when
set to false, the app responds as I would expect, but when set to true again
one portion of the app slows down to unusable speeds.

The fact that the IDE slows to a crawl… and that only some aspects of the new
app I’m building slow down when loaded on an iPad has made this very confusing.

Is there some element that goes hand-in-hand with acceleratedRendering that
I’ve overlooked?

randy

New Apple iPad & Chipset

2018-08-02 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

Well, school districts around the United States are starting to get things
going for new school year… and many will have new iPads… I just received this
info from one district today… Has anyone else seen issues with LC apps
downloading or running on the newest iPads? I don’t have one, but just ordered
one to do some checking.

==
From the IT Operations Manager:
I recently tired to install 10 Frame Fill on our new fleet of iPads running iOS
11.4.1 and the app keeps failing to install. I'm using an MDM with VPP
licensing. Is 10 Frame Fill compatible with this new iOS?
==
I followed up with a couple questions and asked for a bit more detail… he
replied:
OK. Apples hardware upgrades with 3rd party apps are becoming finicky. My new
devices are Model MR7J2LL/A with the new apple pencil functionality and a new
64bit chipset. I may try to recommend using one of your other apps if they
work with this device. If you make any modification to your iOS apps, will
the new app upgrades automatically install themselves are would I have to
reinstall the/ newest version of the app?

Did you leave the controls on dynamic? I found leaving them at static helped.

Re: Move command on iOS

2018-08-04 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Sorry I’m a bit late to this strand, but yes, I’ve seen what you’re describing
Jacque. I’ve seen it in the simulator and when loaded on the iPad.

Have you tried turning off acceleratedRendering and setting to static? As I
shared earlier with the list, the problem I’m seeing includes slowdowns of the
movements.

I’ve read on in the strand… and I’m using move to …. without waiting. The move
for me always includes two buttons… sometimes five depending on the context of
the call.

I was also seeing some issues with the acceleratedRendering/dynamic in the IDE.

Re: acceleratedRendering

2018-08-02 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
All,

I’ve been messing with this slowdown issue … there is a connection between
having acceleratedRendering set to true… and my objects that move set to
dynamic. I see the slowdown in the IDE and on the iPad.

Using LC 9.0.1 RC1 still.

The “catch” is that I haven’t been able to reproduce the same problem for a
demo stack… so, still investigating. If anyone has a thought for something I
can check out, please share.

BTW, the app I submitted last month was actually approved the same day I

I’ve seen similar messages in the past. All I did was drag the app a second

There was one time that trick didn’t win. But I don’t remember the specific

Re: Odd Name Resolution

2018-04-04 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Bob,

This works for me when I’m on the card with the button:
put "btn: Set10to15" && the hilited of button "Set10to15"

This works for me on any card in the stack:
put "btn: Set10to15" && the hilited of button "Set10to15" of cd "GameCardHD"

The button I’m referencing is in a group on the cd "GameCardHD"

Any chance you have two buttons with the same name on the card? Perhaps same
name, but in different groups? I ask, because I seen similar results as you
describe when I’ve done both of those things.

Hi Craig,

That does sound handy. But for me, key 65473 references F4 rather than the

When I have the the Pointer Tool selected and right-click the mouse, I get an

I just put your handler in the stack script. Will that make a difference
compared to using it as a plug-in?

Re: Sound delay

2018-03-16 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi William,

I haven’t messed with this for quite a while, but the sound delay isn’t new. On
iOS I found that the second sound played without delay… even when it was not a
repeat of the first sound. Is that what you’ve seen?

My workaround was to record a few seconds of silence and play that sound on
openStack.
play specialFolderPath("engine") &"/"& "Silence.wav"

I’ve not used mp3 files in LiveCode, so don’t really if you’re seeing the same
thing I did with .wav files.

Re: Password Protected Stack

2018-10-14 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Thank you Jacque. I used the Project Browser for the first time… yes, really…
and found a library stack from one of Scott Rossi’s add-ons that I no longer
was using. It is an old stack…

I didn’t have problems building with LC 7.x or 8.x even with that add-on. So,
something in the build process must have changed in 9.x.

Anyway, the library stack is removed and all is well with the build.

Password Protected Stack

2018-10-13 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I have a problem I’ve not seen before. I’m working on an update to an iOS app
first made years ago and last updated in 2017.

When I save it as a standalone … things go well in that a standalone is made
(and seems to work fine on my iPad), but at the end of the build process, I get
a warning: Could not auto-detect inclusions or security categories because
stack is password protected

The catch is, I’ve never intentionally set a password on any of my work with
LC.
• I’ve checked all the settings and can’t find a place even set a password.
• As noted in the dictionary, I’ve used the message box and entered …. set the
password of this stack to empty … but the problem still persists.

The other apps I’ve been updating over the past several weeks have worked just
fine with my current set up:
LC 9.0.1Xcode 9.2Mac Sierra 10.12.6

I assume I’m missing something obvious, but it escapes me. Any thoughts?

be well,
randy

Re: Signing macOS application

2018-12-29 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Peter,

I don’t develop for Macs beyond personal use… but I do develop for iOS. You
need to use a Distribution Certificate (rather than Developer) to sell on the
iOS App Store… could that requirement also be needed for your situation?

Re: .app to .ipa converter and Xcode version for Mojave?

2018-12-10 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Terry,

I’ve been using Sean Cole’s wonderful plugin: IPA_Builder… he announced it in
an email September 27… I’ve pasted it below in case you don’t have access to
emails from then…

Hi LC Community,

I needed to create IPAs of my iOS software so that I could upload them to
my website for Enterprise distribution but all the old tools for doing this
have been deprecated by Apple. So I've created this simple one to meet
Apple's new standard way to produce them. Simply extract it into your
LiveCode plugins folder and you will be able to open it from the LC menu,
Development>Plugins>IPA_Builder. Let me know if you have any problems with
it.

Re: OT: iOS Policies

2018-11-19 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
I’ve had an app rejected for metadata, too.

I put an app of 20 single verse poems on the store. In my description of the
app I mentioned that the poems were “under development” and I looked forward to
feedback and adding new verses. The rejection stated that no “beta” software
can be on the app store. All I did was remove “under development” from the
description and then it was accepted.

LIC 9.0.1 Stable Redraw Problem

2018-09-14 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I’ve begun the task of updating my iOS apps to work with iOS12 and have run
into a problem.

I use “disable buttons” a lot. And, every time it is invoked… in multiple apps…
the buttons set to disabled disappear. It doesn’t matter if the disabled icon
is set or left at zero.

I only see this issue on a device or in the simulator. Everything looks fine in
the IDE.

Anyone else use “disable” and can check it out with your setup?

I’m using LC 9.0.1 Stable; Xcode 9.2 and MacOS 10.12.6

I’ve not tried to create a stack from scratch to check on this issue, but I’ve
seen it in 3 out of 3 apps that I’ve begun to update.

OT Article That Includes LiveCode

2019-01-28 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

I just became of an article published by:
Australian Computer Society, Inc. This paper appeared at the 17th Australasian
Computing Education Conference (ACE 2015), Sydney, Australia, January 2015.

Entitled:
Using Cognitive Load Theory to select an Environment for Teaching Mobile Apps
Development

Here’s the abstract:
"After considering a number of environments for the development of apps for
mobile devices, we have evaluated five in terms of their suitability for
students early in their programing study. For some of the evaluation we devised
an evaluation scheme based on the principles of cognitive load theory to assess
the relative ease or difficulty of learning and using each environment. After
briefly presenting the scheme, we discuss our results, including our findings
about which mobile apps development environments appear to show most promise
for early-level programming students.”

One of the five IDEs is LiveCode.

Re: acceleratedRendering bugs

2019-03-12 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
My work is only with iOS. So, no comments about Android…

But, I found while working a recent iPad app (with many moving controls) that I
needed to adjust the layerMode to dynamic and back to static after the move.

I also increased the compositorCacheLimit as you noted… only I went up to
256*1024*1024.
I made this adjustment in the startUp handler.

I even needed to up the compositorCacheLimit while working in the IDE.
I made that adjustment in the message box.

I didn’t make any changes relative to compositorTileSize or compositorType.

The app I was developing when I first started making these adjustments is free
(if that will help understand my context) ….
here is the Apple App Preview page:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/begotten/id1431461736?mt=8

Re: [OT] Personal project

2019-10-24 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi Kevin,

Thank you for sharing this journey.

As I watched "How To Work On Yourself When You're Feeling Terrible” you
mentioned “that these poor states do not last forever.”

That comment really rang home for me. While I’ve not experienced the level of
depression you’ve described… being ’down in the dumps’ is a regular occurrence
(does that idiom translate well?). One way I’ve addressed the dark feelings is
to ‘experiment’ with writing poetry… usually single focus/verse poems… here are
several related to living with and recovering from the darkness:

It seems to me depression
 escapes from my despair:
And seeks to overwhelm me
so I no longer care.

It seems to me disguises
 are fearful of themselves;
And serve to cloak the darkness
beneath which no one dwells.

It seems to me that kindness,
a gift to one and all,
Excises pain of others
and helps to break my fall.

It seems to me compassion,
 the precursor of hope,
Sets high our sights on caring
and gives us strength to cope.

be well,
randy

Re: iOS builds ignore taps

2020-06-02 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
I have an iOS app that uses many graphics with movement… in addition to doing
as Scott suggested (toggling acceleratedRendering on an off) I also messed with
adjusting the compositorCacheLimit. Raising the limit helped. Doing this also
helped with some screen redraw issues I saw that sounds consistent with what
Scott also mentioned.

But, I see what you’re seeing. Given that the same options appear for the

Would it work in your case if you left the graphic visible and set the

Re: OT - a new release of WinSignHelper for macOS

2023-08-24 Thread Randy Hengst via use-livecode
Hi All,

This all very interesting. I haven’t built for windows in about 10 years. So,
I’ve never messed with signing certificates.

I’ve downloaded and played with Matthias’ CodeSigning Tool… seems very straight
forward. But, I’m trying to build an app only for a friend to use for free and,
so, I’m not too keen on buying a certificate for $100+ every year.

Is there a way for folks to open an app on windows that is not signed? …like
you can do on a Mac after the scary alert…

take care,
randy

To be honest, i do not know.
I am currently using a cloud code signing certificate which i can only use
 on Windows.
I've chosen the cloud version because of the price, but later i noticed
that it seems that those cloud certificates cannot be used on macOS.
Or maybe they can, but i do not know how, especially with ossl signcode
WinSignHelper uses ossl signcode and currently that tool needs a path to a
 certificate

Do you know where the certificate is stored with the eToken solution? Is
it stored also on the eToken or anywhere else on the Mac?
If you have the certificate as a physical file it maybe could be possible
to select that file in the WinSignHelper prefs.

But as i alread wrote, i really don't know exactly.

I am currently thinking of purchasing a 2nd certificate as eToken
solution, but there is not yet a decision made, if i should spent money
for this, as i have a working cloud certificate which expires in 3 years.

 Regards,
 Matthias
