Re: [libreoffice-users] latest java update has broken my install ofLibre Office.

2012-06-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think this is the way forwards.  We used to keep older versions of java back
in the LO 3.3.x line because any version of java more recent than about 4
versions old seemed to break LO.  We stopped doing that because various users
complained that older java meant more vulnerable and there were also some
concerns about copyright.  If anyone is able to get the right version of 6_31
to you then let us know but just don't tell us who.

Thank you very much for this, this has at least fixed it so L.O. will at least
start up again so that is half the battle.  I am still going to have to install
java 631 once I actually find it because L.O. definitely does not like this
java 7 update.  If I try to enable accessibility it says that this JRE is
defective.  Fortunately I may have the old installer laying around somewhere.

Thanks again.

I had the same problem here, running jre 7 on XP and installing the newest
LibreOffice.
The problem was fixed by removing javasettings_Windows_x86.xml (I actually
just renamed it to javasettings_Windows_x86.xm0) and then when I started
LibreOffice a new and correct version was created. The old xml file
contained info about the jre6, which was not there any longer.
Apparently LO 3.5.4.2 didn't detect the correct Java version when
upgrading from LO 3.4.xx.
That xml file was located inside \LibreOffice\3\user\config\ inside the
\AppData folder

Hi :)
It might be worth adding extra comments to the bug report, such as which system
it does work on and which it doesn't.

If the devs are able to narrow-down the problem then it might be easier for
them to fix.

2012-06-25 Thread Tom Randall

Hi Stuart.

It seems that some people are having this problem and others are not. That
is strange. I have tried both your suggestion of renaming my profile folder
and Bjørn's suggestion of renaming that settings file. In both cases it
still says that the JRE is defective when I try to enable accessibility
tools. So I am still stuck.

Libre Office.

Tom,

Activating a Java Runtime Environment in LibreOffice 3.5.4 took a little
while to complete its initial load following upgrade, but the JRE 1.7
update 5 does function correctly with JAB 2.02 installed with LibreOffice
3.5.4 on 64-bit Windows 7. So, not a problem with the LibreOffice
Accesibility and the Assistive technology tools.

Installation of the updates (32bit and 64bit versions from java.com) did
not corrupt my LibreOffice user profile, and JAB 2.0.2 was not affected. The
NVDA screen reader continues to work correctly with LibreOffice.

So, the JRE installer is not the problem, and that leaves LibreOffice user
profile configuration issues.

I suspect you were just unluky this time round with the Java update
misconfiguring some component of your profile.

I beleive Bjørn's guidance to delete or to rename the
*javasettings_Windows_x86.xml* file is the correct way to clear the issue
by allowing your user profile to rebuild.

Or you could completely remove your LibreOffice user profile and allow it to
be rebuilt with defaults.

The full profile is the folder located at *C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user* which can be renamed.

[libreoffice-users] Read-only "fields"

2012-06-25 Thread Mark McDougall
Hi all,

I've Googled and also searched the mailing list archives but can't find a
solution to this that works for me.

Opened a word document and saved (copy) as odt. I'm heavily editing the
file and have come across a couple of 'fields' in the footer that I can't
edit or delete. Attempting to delete, or delete the text, results in a
pop-up saying that you can't delete read-only portions of the document.

These were originally fields in the word document. Showing 'field names'
in LibreOffice doesn't show any names for these 2 fields. I know one of
them was referencing a cell in a table on the 1st page - something we have
not been able to replicate in OO in the past. They're obviously fields
that OO/LO can't deal with. I'm not concerned about being able to
replicate the field - I'm happy to simply delete the field and hard-code
the text, but I can't even do that!?!

Any ideas on how to remove these 'read-only' fields?

TIA
Regards,

Hi Andreas,

Unfortunately I do have to use java because the accessibility functionality
of libre office depends on it, so disabling java is not an option. Thank
you for the suggestion though as it might be useful to those who don't have

LibreOffice works well on any system without any Java being installed.
If it does not start because of anything related to Java, this is a
clear bug.
You may have replaced Java while the office was running (thanks to that
completely useless "quick-starter"). Does a reboot of the whole system help?

This is how to disable Java in the office suite without:
Find the file ...

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user\config\javasettings.xml

... and load it into a text edior.
Change this line...

true

... to ...

false

... and start the office.

Hi :)
I think on Windows and on Gnu&Linux yiou can right-clcik on it's button (if it
has one) in the taskbar/panel (= that strip along the bottom of the screen in
Xp that has the "Start" button and the clock on it).  If you right-click on the
button there you get a choice to "Move".  Don't press any key or button just
move the mouse back into the screen.  I found it almost impossible not to
left-click to drag.

It might be easier to change the resolution of the montior to something really
tiny and unreadable.  That might make it easier to drag the window into the
right area and then reset your resolution. ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Because [Esc] takes you back to the edit window, I think that the print dialog
is active but its position is out of visible bounds.
Alt+Space_Key might open the window-menu for the active but hidden dialog.
There you might find some way to move it by means of arrow keys. I don't use
Windows right now, so I can not test.

Any day now it will show up here, hopefully, instead of version #1. All
of the updates for version 5 are online at the online version of the
DVD. Mostly it has updated extras like; documentation, updated foreign
language spell checkers, etc..

I wanted to have the #5 updated version online for 3.5.4, and hope to
have some more updates when I upload a 3.5.5 version of the DVD. It may
be near the end of July before I get 3.5.5 DVD created, since I have
been sick and there are a lot of things that need to be done that are
needed A.S.A.P. or before mid July.

Hi :)
Don't worry.  It's not such a big jump this time!

The jump from Grub1 to Grub'2' in Ubuntu 10.04 caught a lot of people out.  I
don't think people were ready for it and it wasn't great back then.  The
massive advantage with Grub'2' is that it is modular so small chunks can be
developed and tested without hurting the rest of it.  Also it is very easy to
reinstall from LiveCd/Usb and there are cleverer way to do it too
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2
Ok, so it was introduced in U 9.10 but it was optional and people avoided it,
or just switched back to Grub1.  All much the same sequence as Unity which also
seems to upset less people now.  I still miss messing around with menu.lst but
who wouldn't?

Thanks for the reply. The problem is not so much that I CANNOT set the option

Hi :)
My U 10.04 shows Grub 1.98 so that was a good guess!  Thanks Chimak :)  I
chickened-out of testing the Grub 2.00-rc1 alpha.  There doesn't seem to have
been any problems over the weekend but i just wouldn't know how to push it.

[libreoffice-users] Downloading LibreOffice

2012-06-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi Dave :)

Errr, that was your 1st post to the list!  I can guess at your original
question which appears to have been lost in the ether.

There are a lot of possible different reasons why downloading doesn't work.
The easiest work-around might be to get yoru son to download LibreOffice onto
his machine and then make a Cd to post to you as a normal small parcel.  Even
better would be if he would download the North American Dvd for you
http://libreoffice-na.us/

Tim of Kracked Press at the NA project might be able to post a dvd to you but i
am not sure how much he would charge.  Hopefully he would at least recoup costs
from whatever he charged you!

As for your own downloading problems.  Which Operating System are you using?
Is it an MS Windows one, maybe Xp?  Perhaps not Windows at all, maybe Ubuntu?
Mac?  Something else?

Do you know your hard-drive's size?  More to the point how much empty space is
left on the drive at the moment?  It might just be that you need to empty your
wastebin and the wastebin in your emailing system.

Don't worry if you don't know answers to some or all of those things but if you
do know it might help us to help you
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi all.
Well the subject pretty much says it, I got a notification there was an

of Libre Office no longer works. As soon as I try to start the program
I get the standard windows 7 message about a problem has caused libre
office to stop working, Windows will close
the program, blah blah blah. I have tried repairing the install and
when that did not do anything I went so far as to remove the whole
install and re-

install Libre Office. Still no joy.
I am not sure if this is an accessibility problem or not, I do know that
the java update did totally screw my install of access bridge as well
and I
had to re-install that too. This is the first time I’ve ever had a java
update screw things up this way.
Needless to say I am not a happy camper, I depend on this program to do
paperwork for work here at home. Has anyone else had this happen with
this java update? I am
running the 32-bit version of windows 7. I have posted this to the
accessibility list too but am posting it here in case it is not related
to the

accessibility settings and is a general problem.

One user on the accessibility list suggested that I try putting the java
631 version back on the system and see if that solves the problem. I
know the java folks don’t recommend you do things like this but I’m
frankly willing to if it will get this fixed for now. If anyone has any
other ideas on how to fix this or if you need more info just let me know.

Thanks in advance.

The "text document" is LibreOffice Writer" and the path you need
to use with a text document opened in Writer (it can be a new one):

Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Print.
The choices for a fax printer in a drop down list.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Need Help AGAIN with Mail Merge

2012-06-25 Thread Charles218
Andreas,

In going through the print procedure again, this time following your step by
step directions, I believe that the problem is solved.

There are two ways to get to the mail merge area, one is by using the
"Print" command and responding "yes" to the do you want to print a form
letter dialog. The second way is by simply clicking on the F4 function key.
If I use the print command and then select the data source, the "Data to
Fields" icon is greyed out. When using the F4 key and then selecting the
data source, the "Data to Fields" option works. That was probably the case
all along though I missed it.

Problem Solved!

Now that this is solved, and I something to work with for awhile, I will
begin to work on the ODBC solution.

Thanks again for taking the time to help!!!
Charles

Windows uses NtLdr instead of Grub so i guess you are talking about not having

[libreoffice-users] New release of Grub2.00 for alpha testing

2012-06-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Ok, so grub2 has had a lot of releases and updates in the last year or so but
this is the big one (well big 2 i guess).  If you don't know what Grub is then
just ignore this thread as it probably doesn't affect most people here.

If anyone is interested in testing this pre-beta release then i would recommend
using an old hard-drive and unplugging your main one!  It 'should' be fine but
it is pre-beta so it may have weirdnesses.

From the grub devs list where Vladimir posted this a couple of days ago ...
"Hello, all. I'm proud to introduce 2.00~rc1 to you.
It's available as

or

As far as I'm aware all issues have been either postponed or resolved
correctly, so I'll release 2.00 on Monday. Give ~rc1 a spin over the
weekend and report any issues.

to Java, I believe it is java 7 update five. Once I did the update my install
of Libre Office no longer works. As soon as I try to start the program I get
the standard windows 7 message about a problem has caused libre office to stop
working, Windows will close
the program, blah blah blah. I have tried repairing the install and when that
did not do anything I went so far as to remove the whole install and re-
install Libre Office. Still no joy.
I am not sure if this is an accessibility problem or not, I do know that the
java update did totally screw my install of access bridge as well and I
had to re-install that too. This is the first time I’ve ever had a java update
screw things up this way.
Needless to say I am not a happy camper, I depend on this program to do
paperwork for work here at home. Has anyone else had this happen with this
java update? I am
running the 32-bit version of windows 7. I have posted this to the
accessibility list too but am posting it here in case it is not related to the
accessibility settings and is a general problem.

One user on the accessibility list suggested that I try putting the java 631
version back on the system and see if that solves the problem. I know the java
folks don’t recommend you do things like this but I’m frankly willing to if it
will get this fixed for now. If anyone has any other ideas on how to fix this
or if you need more info just let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Tom

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to install medical dictionary? print envelope

2012-06-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It is probably best to avoid "customising your toolbars" but it might be smart
to create a new tool-bar that does have only what you want on it.  Taht way
it's easier to get back to the standard toolbars if something goes wrong.  So,

Tools - Customise

Documentation is handy to look through while waiting for answers from the list
here.  If you find the answer first then you can always reply to your own
question.  Given the time-lag i think that is often the best way to approach
problems

Thank you for your email.  However it did not answer my question.  My problem
is that I can not find any information how to print envelopes.  Also, I can not
find any information that will help me to add or delete icons from various
toolbars.  Thank you.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] How to install medical dictionary?

I have downloaded a medical dictionary (en-us-openmedspel.oxt) but can't find
where
to put the file.

In LO 3.3 I would put it in /usr/share/lib64/libreoffice/extensions/language but
I can't find that directory in LO 3.5 (build 392).  I also haven't been able to
find
a "language" folder in any of the paths.

Where do I put this file in LO 3.5 in order to access it when needed?  I looked
in
the help section but found it rather vague about dictionaries, nothing about
where
they are stored.

Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Tom B<)))

OMG, holy this, it works, but there is absolutely nothing intuitive about
it...

I'm not sure what you mean by virtual folders. I know when I
connect to a MySQL database using Base that the tables are in virtual
folders. (Each folder is a specific database.)
But I do not see virtual folders for the forms of those same
databases. Base does suggest names for the forms in this format:
.
If this is what you mean, you can give queries names using a
similar format:
. This will alphabetically separate your
queries by the database names. Reports can be similarly named.

[libreoffice-users] How to export the bibliography DB to Zotero?

2012-06-25 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi

I have a database of ~3000 entries that I would like to export to Zotero.

What would be the recommended way of doing this? I can't seem to find
such information in Zotero forums. I thought I'd ask here as I know my
way around LibreOffice better than Zotero.

This seems like a similar problem although it describes importing from
the bibliography *text*, not the OOo/LibO database:
http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/importing_formatted_bibliographies

At ~3000 entries, it's impractical to create a new document with *all*
entries, not to mention (most possible) data missing when reimporting that.

A friend mentioned using RDF as an intermediary format, or .bib, but
again I would have to have a document with all my references (this
doesn't import all refs from the database AFAIK):
http://www.estm.co.uk/blog/software/export-openoffice-writer-bibliography-to-zotero.html

Any information on how to do this would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Set chart in edit mode.
Format > Axis > x-Axis
Dialog page "Scale". Set Type to 'Date'.
Then you get elements on that dialog page to trim the axis labels.

Kind regards

[libreoffice-users] [3.5.3.2/Writer] In tables, move rows?

2012-06-25 Thread Gilles
Hello,

>From two tables in the same document, I need to move several rows from one
table to another, preferably through keyboard shortcuts as it's much faster.

Here's what I wanted to do:
1. Select one or more rows, through ALT in case they're contiguous, through
CTRL if they aren't
2. Cut with CTRL+X and expect Writer to remove the rows instead of leaving
empty lines
3. Go to destination, hit CTRL+V and expect current rows to move down and
the pasted rows to move in

It looks like Writer is unable to do this. Can you confirm or tell me how?

Thank you.

Tom,

The view status of the place holders should not matter at all. It
toggles between "" and "Database.Table.Field Name". The
latter lets you prove that each field is connected to the right source.

I can not reproduce your problem with a plain text connected database
and LibreOffice 3.5 under Linux.

Here is a screen shot of what I see when using the F4 key.

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n3992018/View_Using_F4.jpg

And here is what I get when using the print dialog.

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n3992018/View_Using_Print_Dialog.jpg

From that screen you call the print command (Ctrl+P)
Then you are prompted if you are going to print a serial letter which
should be confirmed.
Then you see a huge dialog with another instance of the data source
window on top, a section where you choose the selection mode for the
records (All displayed records | selected | from...to) and the output
medium (printer, document or one document per record).

Some of these options suffer from the same old bugs since years, but
printing _all_displayed_records_ into a _single_document_ should always
work.

If your table has only one record or when you want to print only one
record out of many records, you can

- switch the fields to show the names (View>Field Names)
- Click the row selector (grey box in front of each record) in order to
select the record in the data source window.
- Click the data-to-fields button in the data source window. Now the
fields display the actual data of the selected record.

- Print (Ctrl+P)
- Do not confirm the serial print. Just print the document as shown.

The placeholders are never replaced with the data from the source file. I
can follow through and either print or save the document, but the data never
appears in the print or the saved file.

Before someone drops in with some absurd assumptions about Java: All
this works without any Java.

Hope this helps,
A.S.

John, you could install *Psensor. *With it, you can see "%CPU usage" for the
last ten minutes. Another possibility is *System Load Indicator* which sits
nicely in your top panel but I can't figure out how much "back" it displays
. Something more elaborate like *Conky* is also available. All are in the

[libreoffice-users] CTRL-P shortcut freezes LiBo V 3_5_4_2

2012-06-25 Thread henri

Hello,
I have just switched from LiBo V 3.4.5 to LiBo V 3.5.4.2 without any apparent
problems except for the following :
I use mostly WRITER to print and fax. Until the upgrade ,I would ,on completing
a document, press the shortcut CTRL-P ,select the required printer and print or
fax depending on my selection.
As of the change to v 3.5.4.2 when I use the CTRL-P shortcut LiBO freezes up
,no command works ,no printer dialogue shows up and I ,in the end, have to use
the ESC key to go back to my document .
As a workaround for printing, the PRINT icon in the standard toolbar will print
immediately but will not allow me to select a printer therefore I cannot select
a different printer.. The workaround for faxing (which I still have to use as
some companies will not deal with e-mail) is to export the document as a PDF,
and then I can send it as a fax by selecting the fax option through the printer
dialogue of my PDF application.
I have also noticed that the option : tools/options/libreOffice writer/print
will always revert to FAX in the fax window even though I set it to the NONE
option in that dialogue, since I use the fax printer driver and no dedicated fax
software.
I have also tried placing the Send Default Fax in both the FILE menu and the
STANDARD TOOLBAR hoping that it would as well as the Print File Directly Icon
bur it just freezes up again.
I can only assume that the CTRL-P shortcut starts looking for non existent
software and also that the the constant reverting to the fax option in in the
OPTIONS dialogue is a bug but...has anyone else had this problem and is there a
solution?

Here is my system:
OS: win XP sp3 with all patches
AV: Microsoft security essentials
PRINTER: Lexmark 5400 series
   Epson 1290
FAX: Microsoft fax driver
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.
Cheers
Henri
