Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing 7' x 5" envelopes?
UPDATE: I was able to get the envelopes printed by creating my own template and somehow the mail merge worked (don't ask me what I did - don't recall). JBF, Thanks for the update. Yes, the bug reported seems to be the one I am referring to, though it would be good to have a picture to make sure. I do not have a Arc family of themes, and can wait until there is an official fix. It looks like the problem is Ubuntu/GTK, not LO. Can the Paste Special order be changed? It is now HTML, Unformated text. I would like unformated text to be first to save time for people inputting data. Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc macro tutorial
Andrew, Thanks for the note. I actually do software development (Java right now) and enjoy reading documentation (no, not crazy - I've been tested). But when I read a document called "Getting Started With Macros", I reasonably expect it to cover the basics of how to create a macro from scratch - like I would with a VB program (did that for 6 years). I was disappointed to see that it was about using the macro recorder, which will not work for me. I get that the authors are volunteers, and that generally the do a fantastic job. However, in this area, not so much. I've decided that in the short term Calc (and Base) will not fit my needs (documentation, support concerns) and will move the data to Excel/Access. Not what I wan to do, and not what LO community should like, but it seems like the best course of action for this project. I want to automate a Calc spreadsheet to do some data analysis. I need some help finding a complete tutorial on Calc macros. Looking for something like the books published for Excell. I read the documentation, but it says user created macros are beyond the scope of the documentation. REALLY! What the heck is the documentation for then? Tried the chat, wants to know what channel. How do I get Writer to sort a table using a column with months (January, February, March, etc).) or days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.)? All, Thanks for the tips. Some thoughts: 1. All of the workarounds are a mess and in no way are a substitute for a feature (a simple check box to suppress blank fields) that MS Office has had since 98. Time to change this developers. 2. [libreoffice-users] Importing pictures that are resized.
I'm creating some greeting cards using LO Draw templates I created a few years ago. The problem is that Draw gets the dimensions wrong. I start with a digital photo of about 3000 x 2000, resize it using GIMP to about 9" x 6", export as PNG or TIFF, and import into Draw. I the past, the size was correct, but now it is shown as being over 40" wide! I'm guessing that Draw assumes 72ppi, where I'm using 300 ppi. Could someone confirm this behaviour and let me know what I need to do? Re: [libreoffice-users] Importing pictures that are resized - O.E!
All, OOPS! In desperation, I went searching through the options to see if there was a resolution option in Draw. Didn't see one, but something else caught my eye. A few weeks ago I changed the scale factor to try to get more precision on the location of an image (ironically, in prep. for this task). I had changed it to 1:10. Once changed back to 1:1, all was fine. So I want to apologize for what is OE - operator error - and hope you will forgive me for being such a dunce! Thanks all. If I make a suggestion to LO - add some more CAD abilities to Draw such as higher precision. LOD is a very useful program, and could be even more useful. Re: [libreoffice-users] How close Template mgr, where templates stored?
Tim, After some playing around, and some googling, all is resolved. To close the Template manager, click on the title bar, then right click for the close menu. Still, there is no excuse for not having a Close button. The template location is .config/libreoffice/4/user/template. This assumes you have created a template. Else, the template folder will not exist. Dave, On Wed, Sep 23, 2015, at 01:00 AM, Tim Lloyd wrote: > Hi Dave, > > using Fedora and LO 5.0.1.2 it looks like you simply toggle between > displays. Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 5 Documentation
Brian, Well, I tried that. The problem was all the marks and words I made on the monitor (crib notes) - they ruined my monitor :-)) . Actually, that is the point. I tend to write things in the margins to clarify a point, or an example, etc. Tough to do that with the PDF version. In any event, the Ver. 5 docs. are not out yet, so we come back to my question - how close are the 4.2 docs? I looked at the change log, but I never get a good feel for the changes until I start using something. In the case of Calc, the changes to areas I need seem to be minor. So if the LO team can make facebook easy to find relevant info, quick to use, intuitive, no passwords or registration, then go for it. If on the other hand they are just following the latest thing, then forget it. In the end, the support solution needs to fit the users needs, not just be cool. [libreoffice-users] Support options
All, I'm more than a little frustrated/angry at the support options for LO. The choice seems to be between: * A web interface that requires a log on to yet another service I don't have or want to have. * A Nabble interface that requires registration and one of those damn captia codes that NEVER work. * An e-mail interface that clogs my reader. Can't we find a way to offer support that is easy and convenient? I get that new groups are considered old fashioned, but they work very well, and are easy to use (even by kids on cell phones). Open to suggestions, but I don't think moving to the next hot thing is the answer unless it is easy to use. My 2 cents anyway. [libreoffice-users] date line for Calc Gantt charts
All, I use Calc to do a quick Gantt chart (it is easy if the data is simple). The problem I'm having is the dates on the X-Axis. What I want is this: | | | | | | | ...| 01/15 01/15 03/15 04/15 05/15 06/15 07/15 12/15 What I get is something like this: | | | | | | 01//01/15 01/30/15 02/04/15 03/02/15 03/30/15 04/02/15 Seems the dates reflect the start dates and duration of the data. Re: [libreoffice-users] [Twitter] Opening a new user support channel
When it comes to online support, What I'm looking for are: * Registration not needed. News groups pass this test. * e-mail not used so my mailbox doesn't get clogged up. News groups pass this test. * Information well organized by thread/subject. News groups pass this test. * Sorting by date, subject. News groups pass this test. * History - appends go back some time. News groups pass this test. * No cutesy crap. I don't need to see your picture, or the names of your pets. News groups pass this test. * Fast. I have a problem and I want the solution now - not when a web based crap fest wants to reload. News groups pass this test. * Answers. I want a good answer with some detail, not a retort from a Google Monkey. News groups need improvement on this one. * On subject, no flames or trolls. News groups fail this test. So, if social media can meet/excede what I'm looking for, then do it. If it is a case of going with the latest Internet toy, then stop and rethink. Whatever is popular now, won't be 10 years from now, so think long term. One other thought. DON'T go down the age/generation road. It is a dead end that will only bite you on the ass. Look at all the stores, TV showes, ect. that are always trying to appealy to (mostly) the young. It ends badly in most cases. So be very inclusive. Re: [libreoffice-users] [Twitter] Opening a new user support channel
Charles, May I ask what is wrong with a traditional news group? They work very well, don't clog my e-mail (like this does), and are used by some open source projects like Mozilla. Seems like a news group would have been the best choice for support. As for Twitter, Facebook, etc., forget it - not interested in registering for yet another new thing that offers no real benefit over a news group. Dave, On Wed, Dec 10, 2014, at 06:17 AM, Charles-H. Aside forums that are not affiliated with the project, there is our Google + community where users support actually works pretty well; and then we have questions and users requests coming from our Facebook page and Twitter account. While it is a bit unclear what we could do with Facebook at this stage, we are seriously thinking about opening a new twitter account only dedicated to users support. Re: [libreoffice-users] Finding hidden Draw objects
All, Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately none of the ideas revealed the extranous line that ended up in the pdf file. I like the idea of the Navigator, but as is, it is worthless. What needs to happen is that when an object is clicked in Navigator, it is selected in the editor so it can be seen. A description would also be nice (name if available, shape, location, size). Of course there is also the possibility that the pdf conversion process is flawed and that the extranous line does not really exist. [libreoffice-users] Feature Request for Calc - input forms and reports
All, Spreadsheets are wonderful applications for financial analysis and collections of information. We use Calc to store information about the tools in my tool chest, items in the pantry, and I know a lady that uses a spreadsheet for the shoes in her closet. Basically, Calc is being used as a flat-file database, which spreadsheets do well and they are easy to understand. Calc offers the ability to sort and to filter, which is really a type of query. What Calc doesn't offer though is the ability to have input forms and reports. Consider a spreadsheet for the tools in a tool chest. It may have the following fields (columns): ChestNumber, DrawerNumber, SectionNumber, ToolName, ToolDesc, Comment. On sheet 2 there are columns for verification for ChestNumber, DrawerNumber, SectionNumber and ToolName. It would be nice if a custom data input form could be created like is done with Base, though a little easier to create. It would also be nice if there was a report function so I can have a printout of all of my tools. The report may look something like this: Title: Tool Chest Contents Report Date: 8/20/14 Chest Drawer Section Tool NameTool Description/Comment - -- --- --- --- 1 3 1Combination wrenches Wrench sizes: 3mm-33mm 7mm wrench missing Notice that the Comment field has been placed under the Description field. This is commonly done in database reports because most records don't have comments, so there is not much need for a separate column. So, yes, I'm asking for more database features in Calc. However, simple databases are a very common use for spreadsheets, so why not embrace the situation with more functionality? Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc data in Writer
Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried a number of things, and the bottom line is that LO makes a simple task a real pain in the ass. Many people keep lists of things in spreadsheets - CD's, photos, tools in a tool box, contents in the pantry, toys in the toy box, etc. At some time you may want an easy way to basically print out a formatted report based on the spreadsheet data. There is no easy way in LO. That fact needs to change. I found that using the report functions of Base came the closest to doing what I want, but doing a custom report is not easy for the casual user. My suggestion is to either beef up Writer, or build reports into Calc. Make them easy to understand and easy to create. Dave, On Tue, Aug 19, 2014, at 09:38 AM, dave boland wrote: All, Thanks for the replies - I think. First, you can't do this with cut and paste because the formatting is just columns. This is (hint) like a database report where the comment field is placed under the description field (see below). The fields in the spreadsheet are: Date, Sender, Subject, Description, Comment. What I want is to have all records printed on one page (or two if needed), not one record per page like mail merge typically does. Writer has data sources, and you can select fields, I just have not figured out how to fill the fields so they are printed like below (one record after the other). However, I believe it is possible to use Base to create the report I want. I'll investigate that approach later today. Any other helpful suggestions welcome. Actually, the OP (me) started with Calc database because changes are easy. Changes are still under way (field names, new fields, etc.), so I'm using Base to access Calc, which gives me queries. The next step is a real db, but I'm still sorting that out. I'm not interested in RAM-resident, embedded for reasons pointed out in this thread. How does switching to Firebird solve the issue of an embedded, all in memory database? I would be happy if LO offered an option (when creating a db) to use embedded model or the split model. As I recall, at the time of the release of OpenOffice2, it had to be like Access - but of course, as Sun was mainly running the show, that meant that it had to be multi-OS, thus Java based and a fairly simple, drop-in piece of code with an appropriate licence. One would do well to remember that at the time, the internal Sun Base development team only comprised about 3 members of staff working full-time on the project, thus resources were painfully limited. It turned out to be not so simple after all, but that can be said about many things in software development. The issue of performance was raised even back then, and remains with us today - embedded Java bridging (via UNO JNI) of an in-memory database - loads of things to go potentially wrong at any given instance in the lifecycle of the application, notwithstanding that upgrading to newer versions of the db has always been fraught with complications, so a maintenance nightmare for OOo/AOO/LO developers. It can be done though, Fred Toussi (one of the lead developers on the hsqldb project) has, I believe, provided patches for the integration of an update to the hsqldb version code, but these have not been integrated due to the decision to move to Firebird. Database noobs wanted Access-like functionality and portability and multi-OS operation - the fact that they don't really get that today with LibreOffice Base is due more to lack of functional implementation/integration witn the other parts of LibreOffice than to the type of underlying db. Even MS Access has moved to a separated db/frontend paradigm, as far as I understand. Just to put things in perspective, there are, to my knowledge, currently no full/part time paid-to-work developers within the LibreOffice project that work on Base - everything done is voluntary, spare/free time involvement, so it is hardly surprising that things with Base move a little more slowly than modules such as Writer and Calc, in fact, it is my undestanding that the main voluntary developer spends most of his time in the project undoing the bugs/regressions caused by ongoing code development elsewhere within the LibreOffice project. To the user, the interpretation of 'internal' would be that it is within it's own folder and 'external' would be that the actual database is somewhere else during set-up. The default Base file, with an ODB extension, is a container (zipped). Within that container are files and subfolders, some files describe the structure and content of the database in a form that LibreOffice's embedded hsqldb engine can read when you load the file. The subfolders generally relate to other aspects of the ODB file, such as macros, forms, reports, report definitions (XML), query definitions, etc) When you reference an outside db backend, everything but the actual database content and data defintitions get stored in the ODB file, with simply a reference to that content and how to access it being stored in the ODB. In other words, your data is actually safe somewhere else (on a server, on another part of your hard disk, etc) Utimately, for as long your actual database data is somewhere else, you could screw up your ODB file and still not affect your data. However, you would potentially lose all of your query/report definitions, your macros, forms, etc. Note that forms do not have to be stored within the ODB, they can be stored as standalone documents. The same goes for reports, although the report definitions are always stored within the ODB file (unless someone has found a way to get around that). Alex I'm getting a little confused. My understanding is that there are really two issues here. One is that LO Base is RAM resident - all updates are held in RAM until saved by the user, or the program is closed. Correct? If so, this situation will expose the user to data loss between saves. The other issue is that LO Base uses an embedded database, which means that the data files and the GUI, reports, etc. are combined into one file that can be corrupted. The suggestion is to use a split system where the data files are separate from the other files. Correct? If so, at best, the data may be a little safer, but forms, queries, etc. can still be corrupted. A database like MySQL and mariadb cache the updates and then write them to disk every 1/2 to full second (or however configured). Seems like a good idea. So I come back to my suggestion earlier today - LO Base needs to give the user the opportunity to specify what they want - RAM or file based, single file or multiple files. Would that be difficult to do? Yes, I know that you can link to other back-end db's, but LO Base doesn't create those db's - that has to be done ahead of time by someone that is skilled with the particular db. Correct? [libreoffice-users] Base questions
All, Was reading the FAQ at https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/FAQ_%28Base%29 and came upon some insight that worries me. Under the heading So why should I avoid 'embedded databases'? it goes on to say the normal Base file is not reliable, so use a split file, the points to Microsoft docs. My questions are: 1. How robust are embedded Base files created by the GUI? 2. If they are not that reliable, what is the LO Base procedure to create a split database? 3. Anything else I need to know? I'm going ahead with using Base for a project for now. Once the data has stabilized (fields, field type, number of tables), I'll move to either Mysql or Mariadb. [libreoffice-users] Calc charts, data in record form
All, Looks like I will be keeping my data in Calc for a while - until we have a better idea of what we want (changing a database is a lot of work). However, I need to do some charts, and I have not figured out how to get Calc to give me what I want, so I need a pointer or two. I want line charts, with multiple curves per axis (up to 8). Perhaps something like this: http://www.indiabix.com/data-interpretation/line-charts/ The data is arranged in record format like this: Date Location TemperatureHumidity - - -- - 7/1/14Syracuse 71 79% 7/1/14Albany68 70% 7/1/14Rochester 69 70% 7/8/14Syracuse 82 68% 7/8/14Albany79 67% 7/8/14Rochester 75 66% So how do I end up with one chart that shows three curves for the three cities over time (Location and Date on the X-axis, Temperature on the Y-axis)? I have looked at the docs amd did some Googling, but so far I'm stumped. I know that someone has done this, so there is likely a very easy want to do it. What you need to do is to assemble a table in an appropriate fashion for a chart to be possible. You will probably want four columns - for dates and the three locations - with the temperature values in the body of the table. That way, there would be one row for each date. Creating the chart from this would be simple. So how to achieve that table? Well, one way would be simply to enter the data that way in the first place. However the data arises, it may be most convenient to massage it into the required form as you enter it. Note that the way you are currently entering data, you have each date entered three times and each location very many times. That's never a good idea. How many weeks before you enter Sryacuse by mistake? Alternatively, you can simply extract what you need from your existing table into the required one. Your date column would be entered manually or - better if appropriate - filled down from the first two weeks' dates. The body of the table would then have formulae which retrieved the appropriate data from the original table. You might be able to do this using the VLOOKUP() function, but it won't be simple, as you have two conditions to search for: date and location. The simplest solution might be to sort your original table by location (or you could enter the data into three tables in the first place), and then to use VLOOKUP() to search for the appropriate date and harvest the temperature value from within just the relevant part of the original table - that now containing the values for each location. It's probably very much easier if you create three tables in the first place - one for each location. Brian, Thanks for the insight. The way the data is set up is legacy in that it is from a form used previously. The intent was to create database-like records where data from 12 cities is updated each week. To help eliminate entry mistakes, I use validation so Syracuse never becomes something else. I have made some progress playing with chart settings, but still not where I need to be. I will give the lookup functions a try. Re: [libreoffice-users] Adding fields to existing Base table
I agree that planning is key. I started with a spreadsheet until the data source was stable. The plan is to import the data into Base, do some reports, report my progress, then gather comments and suggestions. My guess is that the database will grow - I just don't know to what. So, I may end up exporting the tables to spreadsheet and re-import. Once the database is stable, I plan to move to either MySQL or MariaDB. Of course, then you must add the new field toyour forms, queries, relationships and reports, as needed. Deleting fields is another matter. I have had problems with MySQL field deletions before - especially messing with the primary key. Then it may be a matter of directly using the MySQL interface program, with some SQL code, bypassing LO Base. But it is possible. So be careful what you do. Think it out first. I have no experience with the internal HSQLDB server. From what I read on this forum, using the internal HSQLDB server with a large 3GB database is not recommended. Best to use MySQL, MariaDB, or Postgresql for such large databases. Also, remember that there may be no way to easily port your data from the internal HSQLDB database to an external database if you so decide to make the change in the future. You may end up re-entering it all. Best to make the commitment now, before you run into a wall. Note that I consider my databases large at 2.7_M_B for the current largest. IMHO, 3GB is out there. Re: [libreoffice-users] Adding fields to existing Base table
Thank you Noel. I will check this out. My head is spinning right now with all of the choices. I need to get something together for next Fri., so I'm going with LO Base for now. Seems like a decent choice because I will be the only user for most of the rest of the year. Later this year there may be two other users. So the convenience of LO Base makes sense, and the data size for the rest of the year is not likely to excede 200 MB. The biggest limitation with LO Base is the report spftware - doesn't seem to support embedding charts in the report. Hopefully this problem gets fixed in 4.3. Alternatively, I'll use a stand-alone report software product. Hey, did I mention that this was SUPPOSED to be a quick simple project? Aren't they all?? My hope is that I can use LO Base as the front end for a more robust RDMS later this year. I have been looking at MariaDB because it seems to have a lot of buz, but may not be the best chioce. One of the things that really needs to happen is that I have to get my arms around this project in terms of potential size, number of users, on the web or not, ect. My guess is that I won't have that done until very late this year. Re: [libreoffice-users] Adding fields to existing Base table
IanW, I'm concerned with Base, but I have some things to put together for next Fri. which will be the data in some report. No big deal - just a starting point. Since time is tight, do you think I would be smarter to continue with Base/HSQL, or go to Base as the front tend and MySQL or MariaDB as the back end now? For this week, my data requirements are only 150KB, two tables, four queries, 1 report (my estimates as I type). MySQL has some graphic front-ends for creation and admin., but I don't think MariaDB has this (yet), though there are some third party software that may do the same thing. So while MariaDB has the buzz, I may be better off with MySQL and linve with Oracle - at least for now. For desktop use, there is also Kexi. Ever use it and any comments? I would consider this as an interim step that will tide me over for at least a few months. My big concern is time. Learning MySQL/MariaDB is not something I'll do in a day, so this may have to be a longer term project. Dave, Hi Dave My penny's worth - I battled with plain Base for about 3 years. Horrendous crashes and freezes and the amount of data I lost and had to re-enter was unbelievable!!! (I'm a single user, single machine running with Linux as my OpSys). Every time Base goes down it takes the entire Database with it! So the only way round it is to make copies every time you add data so that when it crashes you can rename the copy and get going again. You WILL lose data I promise you!! I did everything I could but no luck. It then became obvious to me that the problem was the embedded DB so I took the plunge and moved to MySQL last year. I've had NO crashes or lost data since then. It's as solid as a rock!! My recommendation would be to START right now with MySQL (or other backend). Base as a front end is great as long as the backend is solid!! Just my opinion for what it's worth but I speak from hard experience!!! Re: [libreoffice-users] Adding fields to existing Base table
All, I want to thank all of you for your very helpful responses. Yes, it has bee a long time since I have used databases. Last was about 10 years ago when I used Access with SQL for a real time data acquisition system. That was a challenge! What I'm doing now is creating a database of data that changes about twice per week, but the number of areas (of the US) covered will grow from 12 now, to over 100 if the project gets the go-ahead. I likely will be stuck adding the data as I am developing a program to acquire the raw data automatically. I will also create reports that get sent to a few individuals (for now), and more later if the project is go. There has been some talk about adding a web site that is interactive like some stock web sites or the really nice Weather Underground site, but that is a bridge to cross in 2015. My take-away for the discussion is that LO Base will not take me to where I need to be, and I need to make some decisions ASAP. I did a lot of Googling this afternoon, and some reading. The plan based on your input is: 1. Use LO Base to do the quick demo since the data is currently in a spreadsheet I don't need to worry about loosing it altogether. The reason for the spreadshet is that eraly on I have no idea what the data is going to look like, and spreadsheets are easier to creat and modify. 2. Move to an industrial strength database engine. After some fast research, I'm leaning toward MariaDB. It doesn't appear to have a GUI client for input forms or a report generator, so there will be a lot of work here. JasperRreports and Next Reports seem to be good for the output. 3. Plan on spending a lot more time than orriginally budgeted for this porject - but that seems to always be the case with developemnt. Thoughts or comments?? Thanks, Dave On Thu, Jul 10, 2014, at 03:27 PM, dave boland wrote: I'm setting up a database that is small (three tables, may grow to 3GB over next year). Thanks Wolfgang! Dave On Wed, Jun 25, 2014, at 07:27 AM, Wolfgang Keller wrote: I have been collecting data for over a year in Calc. I will be rolling over to Base to use the data more effectively. One word of free advice: Avoid the built in database engine. Use an external client-server RDBMS. It's so much safer. The driver for PostgreSQL comes with LO. Embedded database files can too easily get corrupted. That's not necessarily a problem specific to LO and/OR HSQLDB. However, Base has some drawbacks that I need some help with. I have been using the Calc data to create graphs of some of the data. I did not see a way to do this in Base directly, You can still pull the data from the database into Calc. https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=75t=18511 so my first question is what is the best way to create graphics in the Base reports? Don't know about the report builder, never used it. I'm also aware of a data visualization program called R. I have not used R, and don't know if it will integrate with Base, or replace the Base report altogehter. R is a statistical analysis software, implemented as a fork of the commercial S+. It should at least integrate with LO through Python, since Python has an interface module RPy. Or someone may have written a plugin that allows to use. Oh, here it is: http://tinyurl.com/na2fatp BTW: For anything that's not directly implementable using Calc functions and plugins, Python is a great scripting language for data crunching anyway, so learning it can be useful. It's not just for reporting, and not just with LO and PostgreSQL. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Fwd: Re: Base graphics/visualization
Alex, Thank you so much for the info! I have not spent much time on this, so I'm guessing that the plan (for me) is to use LO Base, then use one of these products to create the reports? These report generators require either an ODBC or JDBC driver, so I'm hoping that Base has one or the other. I did some Googling and it is not clear to me that it does. So, does that mean that I should be focusing on PostgreSQL or MariaDB for example? Forget using Base/Calc to build complex charts from your data, unless you have some serious time and coding skills to hand to be able to drive all of this via scripts and one of LO's UNO interfaces (Python, Basic, JS, Beanshell, etc). Look for another reporting solution that integrates chart handling in a (seemingly) more reliable way : JReport (very similar to what appears to be available in Base, but organised in a better way, IMHO : http://www.jinfonet.com/manualpro/tutorial/index.htm Pentaho Business Reports (this is the superset of tools to JFreeReport, the reporting tool used by LO Base) http://wiki.pentaho.com/display/Reporting/Pentaho+Reporting+-+User+Guide+for+Report+Designer iReport / JasperReports http://sourceforge.net/p/ireport/wiki/Home/ http://community.jaspersoft.com/wiki/ireport-designer-getting-started The latter enables you to export your report to a multitude of formats, including ODF, and PDF. What I want to be able to do is (for now) have a pdf report that shows the statistics (records, averages, deviations) and charts that show up to four variables on the same axis. So the first question is can I do that with Base and Calc? This needs to be automated so that each day I run a report on the current data and get the report. I have no problem with using LO scripting language if needed, I just need to know that this can be done and generally how. If the answer is that it can't be done, or would require extensive work, then waht are the alternatives? I looked at MariaDb, but did not see any built-in tools to do what I want. Similarly Base also allows data tables to be kept internally in the in-built back-end = just like MS Access. However, unlike Access, it is really meant to be used with an external back-end and that could be on a file-server or somewhere weird for security or to allow many different machines to share the same data easily. About the 1st things Base asks for is where the data is. In your case you could set Base to use the spreadsheet that you already have as it's back-end = then later on move the data to a different back-end program (such as MySql/MariaDb or Postgresql or something) for greater stability. This way of modularising the database means that normal users see the data in a familiar program (eg Writer or Calc) without needing to learn all about the complexities of database design. It means even normal users can use existing Forms and Reports to make new ones or to make minor modifications without much risk to the database itself. Then when you design your Client and Contacts form, bind the field Company_ID to the corresponding Company_ID in the Company table, and then indicate that what you want displayed in the form as the bound column is actually Company_Name. The sub-form wizard should enable you to do that (i.e. when creating Client form, go through the subform wizard steps to bind to the Company table as well, which in effect creates a subform within your main form). You could also set up Contacts as a subform of Clients in the same way, e.g. as a grid control. Also as I understand it, this is due to change in an upcoming version of the mailing list program. This means you have two choices at present. 1. You can register with the libo mailing list using the -nomail parameter. This means that your posts via gmane get right through the system, but you don't get any emails. You read the newsgroup in your nntp reader. To use this option send an email from the same email account you registered with gmane to listname+subscribe-nom...@global.libreoffice.org. Reply to the resulting email and you're done. Listname for the users list is, of course, users. 2. You don't register with the libo mailing list, which means that, until the list manager is updated, your posts will come to one of the moderators to be approved before getting on the list.
