Luuk, perhaps you could explain just why you would never use a LibreOffice

I'm not a Mac user myself, but according to Jack Wallen at *Tech Republi*c (
https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-sign-libreoffice-6-documents-with-gnupg/),
if one has installed a PGP tool for MacOS (he suggests GPG Suite), one can
sign documents by following the procedures outlined in the article

Good luck - and please report back on your experience !...

From time to time I receive messages of the type above, but never any

I'm still receiving messages - save when I'm not, but then I usually get a

telling me that everything is back to normal if I see it

Hullo Charles,

I had occasion to test opening and reading .wps files in LibreOffice on a
single occasion several years ago, when one of our pensioners needed to
read some ancient documents. Worked like a charm

Udvarius, as you've discovered, most fonts do not support creating an « M»
via a compose key ; generally speaking it's easier to use such a key to
place a bar over a vowel than a consonant. But there's no need for the OP
to restrict himnself to a certain font ; rather than using the compose key, *in
LibreOffice* one can use the «bar over» button to produce such characters,
as per the instructions in my first reply above to the OP. Moreover, one
can easily copy such a character and paste it into, e g, an epost message ;
that is how I am able to write «M» in this reply

Thomas, perform a search for «Adding Buttons to Toolbars» in LO Help and
follow the instructions. The button you want to add - and use when typing
in your « M» - looks like a lower-case «a» with a bar over it (ā)

Hope this helps !

[libreoffice-users] Installing LO on (64-bit) Windows 10

2018-08-12 Thread M Henri Day
Decided today to install (the Swedish-language version of) LO 6.1.0.3 on
one of my Windows 10 (version 1803, updated) machines ; as expected I
observed the same problem I've encountered ever since version 5.4.1, *viz*,
that if after choosing a typical installation in the Installation Guide, I
then check the box for creating an icon on the desktop, when the
installation gets to the point that new shortcuts are to be installed,
Warning 1909, to the effect that shortcut LibreOffice 6.1. lnk could not be
installed and that I should check to see that the the target map exists and
that I have access to it, appears in a smaller box also entitled
LibreOffice 1.6.0.3 - Installation Guide. When I then click OK, Internal
error 2902 ixoShortCutProperty is then displayed in the box and when I
again click OK, the installation is rolled back

If I do *not *check the box for creating a desktop icon, the installation
proceeds nominally and what is more, a desktop icon is created anyway. I've
experienced this problem on several different computers, so it would seem
to be due to an LO setting, rather than to a software or hardware problem
on a particular computer. I've not seen any reference to it on this forum,
which surprises me, as I'd have thought that such a rollback would provoke
responses from many users ; could it be that only users of the Swedish
version are affected ? In any event, I'd appreciate hearing back concerning
this matter. What is the standard target map for the shortcut link on
Windows, and where can it be found ? I note that I encounter no such
problems when installing LO on, e g, Linux Mint, whether directly from the
LO website or via the PPAs

Peggy, you certainly shouldn't have to download and install the six LO
modules - Base, Calc, Draw, Impress, Math, Writer - seperately ; if you've
downloaded the installation package for LibreOffice 6.0.6.2 for Windows
from the LO site and then installed it, when you click the Windows 7 menu
icon at the left of your taskbar, and then select «All Programs» you should
see a folder-like icon for LibreOffice 6.0. Clicking that will open to 8
applications : LibreOffice, LibreOffice (Safe Mode), Base, Calc, Draw,
Impress, Math, and Writer. Clicking on any of these should launch that
particular application. Does performing the above lead to a different
outcome for you ?...

Thanks for your speedy reply, Andrew ! Currently I have three LO icons on
my panel - the generic LO, Writer, and Calc, respectively, corresponding to
the services I most often use. Clicking the first-named opens a menu allows
me to choose from the other four services with a simple click, which I
presume serves the same function as the Quick-starter which you describe
above (I've never used it)

From what you wrote above, I got the impression that the Quick-starter
option has been available to you in all LO versions previous to 6.1.0.3,
which surprised me, as on the 6.0.6..2 version I presntly have installed, I
don't see any «memory» option (I'm using the Swedish-language version, but
I doubt that it differs in this respect from the English-language version I
presume you use). After doing some searching, I've been given to understand
that it was deprecated quite some time ago, but that installing the
«libreoffice-systray» package would work. However, this alternative may
also have been deprecated, unfortunatelyI haven't a clue

With regard to the pre-release PPA, in my experience it installs the new
version over the older one. It works very well, - which hasn't always been
the case when I've manually installed a pre-release version from the LO
website - the only problem is that I often have to wait a short while
before the PPA becomes available to me. Thus, for example, version 6.1.0.3
was successfully added to the PPA some three days ago, but it still hasn't
appeared on my Update Manager. However, I regard waiting a few extra days
for it to come as a small price to pay for the convenience and reliability
it hitherto has offered me

Andrew, wouldn't it suffice for your purposes to pin the LibreOffice
icon(s) to the panel on LM (right click the icon desired in the meny and
choose the option «Pin to the panel») ? I'm using the same version of LMyou
do (but LO 6.0.6.2 rather than 6.1.0.3 - still waiting for the pre-release
PPA to kick in) and it works very well for me

Thanks for reporting back, Graham ; if the issue has been resolved in
6.1.0, then I agree - there's not much reason to pursue it further. But
which layout did you prefer, the Notebook or the default ?...

Odd. On my setup - *nota bene*, with Expert enabled - with the standard
layout enabled, I don't see the settings icon, but when i have the Notebook
layout enabled, the icon is visible and clicking it gives me the option to
enable the menubar, from which I can then proceed to return to the standard
layout. We are both running LO 6.0.5.2 (in my case, the 64-bit version) on
Linux Mint, and I find it difficult to believe the fact that I'm using a
more recent version of LM (19.0) than you are or that my LO is the Swedish
edition can explain the differences we seem to experience. Perhaps a
developer could be enticed to weigh in ?...

I suspect you're right, Tom - even if I'm not sure what a «normal user»
would be - some people are indeed convinced that everything that is new is
necessarily better, even if, as you point out «[t]he ribbon-bar in MS

for many users with whom I've come in contact. But I think the developers
are wise to explore this path, in order to win over users who for some
reason feel that such an interface is more «modern»

What I hope they will *not* do, however, is remove support for the standard
toolbar layout at some future date if it seems that a large number of new

Agree with Philip above about retaining the old toolbar layout - one could,
of course, learn the «ribbon», but why bother - especially when it is more
complicated to use and doesn't seem to provide any advantages. But I do
think it's worthwhile experimenting with and it's easy to get back to the
default toolbar layout, så long as the menubar is shown (which it is by
defautl ; if one doesn't see it in the ribbon view, click the settings icon
(the three horizontal lines) at the upper right and check the alternative))
just click there on View → Toolbar Layout and choose Default

When downloading LibreOffice from the website, I see a «Change Language»
button which allows me to choose among a plthora of languages, including
both English (GB) and English (USA). All I need do is click on the desired

Thanks, Tim, for your reply ! As I said, I am surprised to hear that the
default installation from the Ubuntu repository didn't include LO Math and
Base (and even more surprised to hear that even Draw was omitted), as when
I install Linux Mint on a new computer, all those LO packages are
automatically included. It would seem then that the LO that is downloaded
from the LM respository is not identical with that which is downloaded
fromteh Ubuntu repository, which I find odd

I appreciate your comment on what running, e g, Win7 would require on your
old computer ; this is one of the reasons, aside from greater general
reliability and fewer hassles that I advise seniors with older computers
they wish to continue to use to install Mint. But I think you were smart to
install those two 512Mb RAM sticks ; that should have made a significant
difference in how you experience the new/old box.

Thanks, Robert, for your reply ! I'm aware that one can choose not to
install certain LO packages. What surprised me in Tim's post was rather
that - as I interpreted him - the packages for Math and Base were not
automatically downloaded and installed, without any intervention on his
part. But perhaps I misunderstood

Indeed. While there are Linux distributions which definitely are not for
beginners, anyone who has used a Windows OS will find a distribution like
Linux Mint 18.3 intuitive and user-friendly, and in my experience, far more
reliable than, e g, Windows 10

Good on ya, Tim ; how does LO now work on that machine (and which version

Surprised to hear that the Ubuntu respositories don't provide a complete LO
package - I install via the PPA on my Linux Mint machine, which is an
Ubuntu fork, and get everything, including Math and Base. What gives ?...

Tim, if you've managed to successfully install 64-bit Ubuntu MATE 16.04 on
this system, you should be able to install and run any version of LO - why
not take the latest, 6.0.1 (or 6.0.2 to which LO just updated itself via
the PPA om my Linux box) ? The only thing I'd recommend beyond this would
be installing a bit more RAM. Even if you've made clear that you don't wish
to buy any hardware for it, you should be able to obtain some used DDR-2
sticks, which the motherboard is almost certain to support, for next to
nothing, which would make a great deal of difference in how you experience
the computer (the system requirements for 64-bit LO 6.0.1 are listed as 256
MB RAM, with 512 MB recommended)

[libreoffice-users] Minor (?) LO installation problem

2018-02-16 Thread M Henri Day
I am very
 impressed and
pleased with LO 6.0.1.1, which I have now installed on both my Linux (Mint
18.3) and Windows (10, v 1709) boxes
; among other things, like v 6.0.0.3, it loads much more quickly than
earlier versions.
However, when installing the suite on Windows machines, I have
encountered the following problem : If I choose the alternative for
typical installation (I'm not certain if that is the correct term in the
English version of the programme ; I am here translating from the Swedish,
as I use that version) in the installation guide, an error message is
displayed just before the installation of the basic programme is completed
and it is rolled back. This difficulty can be avoided if instead of the
standard installation, I click the alternative which allows me to choose
certain parameters, in particular to uncheck the box which automatically
installs a desktop icon. If I recall aright, I first observed this problem
when updating to LO 5.4.4.2

Has anyone else encountered this problem ?...

Have to agree with Tom here - this version loads significantly more
quickly than any earlier version on my computers (running both Linux Mint
18.3 and Windows 10 v 1709) and is a joy to use. Kudos !...

I've notice one problem with installation of recent LO versions on Windows,
but I'll save that for another thread

Charles, if your machine has a 64-bit processor and operating system, you
might rather want to consider downloading and instalingl the 64-bit version

Hullo Pieter,

The above sounded rather different from my own experience, so I thought I'd
check it out by entering «LibreOffice» in my browser (Firefox Nightly) on
my Linux Mint 18.1 system and performing a search. This lead me to the
English-language interface at https://www.libreoffice.org/, where clicking
«Download now» brought me to a web page which suggested Linux x86_64(rpm)
as my operating system (it always misses that I have a deb derivative), but
allowed me to choose, among other things, Windows x86_64. It then suggested
a Swedish-language user interface and Help for online use -reasonable,
given my location here in Stockholm - but allowed me to choose another
language, such as Dutch, for the download, wherewith I ended up at
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/?type=win-x86_64=5.3.3=nl.
Do you see something different if you follow this procedure ?...

Mark, I can confirm that running the senaste version (5.3.3.2) of LO on
Linux Mint 18.1, the keyboard shortcuts «Ctrl+G» and «Ctrl+Shift+F5» behave
precisely as you describe above for windows. I agree that it's hard to
imagine anything faster, without a chip installed in the brain ;-)

I see. What I fail to understand is why your client is unable to open a
file in .doc format, while the MS Office version I have is that released in
2013, which has no problem opening .doc files and I have forwarded files
saved in that format to persons who used MS Office 2016 to open them
without difficulty. What version of MS Office is your client using ?...

Thanks for responding with your experience, QC ! Alas I've never
encountered your problem, so my suggestion was not based on any concrete
experience on my part. Too bad it didn't work

My suspcion is that the embedding process works differently in LO than in
MS Office, which may explain - but, unfortunately not resolve - your
problem. I doubt that using the latest stable version of LO - 5.3.1.2 -
would make any difference, but it would be interesting to learn if, in the
event you were to save the document in .odt format, the embedded
spreadsheet would still be converted into an image

QC, perhaps I misunderstand you, but you seem to be saving what originally
was a .doc file in .docx format, because as you say above, «[t]he older
Word 97 format is not readable anymore by one of my customers». I was quite
surprised to read that, as I had laboured under the understanding that even
the latest editions of MS Office could still successfully open files in
.doc (and for that matter, .xls) format. Could it be that your attempts to
save the file in .docx format is what led the embedded spreadsheet (which I
presume was originally in .xls format) to be converted to an image (in
which format ?) ?...

Perhaps to get 'round your present difficulty you could open the embedded
spreadsheet in .xls format and then attempt to save it in .xlsx format. If
that can be done successfully, perhaps you could replace the embedded
version with the new version ?...

Good luck !

Interesting ! On the machine I described above, on which I'm running
64-bit Linux Mint
18.1, I see no difference in the speed of opening if I open the file in
question in my Documents directory, or if I first open LO and then access
the file. In my case, (the Swedish language version of) 5.3.0
.3 was downloaded directly from the LO website

Running «dpkg -s libreoffice» in a terminal gives the following :

Package: libreoffice
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: metapackages
Installed-Size: 13
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers <ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com>
Architecture: amd64
Version: 1:5.3.0~rc3-0ubuntu1~xenial1.1
(and very much more)

i e, precisely what you see, Leonardo

Tom, there have been a plethora of articles on München's decision to
switch back to Microsoft, and one of the important factors seems indeed to
have been a change in the municipal administration. But from what I
understand it was not a new «conservative»
-
 i e, CSU
-
majyr that pushed for this change, but a Social Democrat
 (SPD), Dieter Reiter (
https://www.techworm.net/2017/02/first-linux-flag-bearer-munich-dumps-linux-windows-10.html)
:

«All Munich city computers were running on Linux. However, the 2014 arrival
of a new lord mayor, Dieter Reiter of the Social Democratic Party (SPD),
spelled trouble for the flagship scheme. Reiter wanted the city to move
back to Windows and commissioned a report from consultants, including
Microsoft partner Accenture, which said
<http://www.techrepublic.com/article/open-source-pioneer-munich-debates-report-that-suggests-abandoning-linux-for-windows-10/>
staff should be given the option of using Windows 10 and Microsoft Office.

Now the administration’s Windows move will be put to vote and if approved,
Munich’s desktops will be running on Windows 10 all the way. In the
interim, the committee suggested, city workers should still be able to run
Windows or LiMux as they choose.

“The mayor was against free software from the beginning,” said Matthias
Kirschner, the president of Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). “When
he was elected, he took pride in getting Microsoft to move their office to
Munich [a move that took place last September]. He even gave this study to
Accenture, which is a Microsoft partner.”»

Our friends at the Foundation will no doubt have (some of) the details

Philip, you're quite right ; I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the OP
was more concerned with the zoom *function* than with just where the
control was to be found. As I mentioned in my reply above, a zoom button
can be enabled in the toolbar, but if, for some reason, one prefers to use
the status bar, a zoom slide control can also be found at the extreme right
of the status bar when that function is enabled

At least it works that way for me in LibreOffice 5.3.0.3 on Linux Mint
18.1

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Help in version 5.3.0.3

2017-02-04 Thread M Henri Day
After upgrading recently to (the Swedish version of) LibreOffice 5.3.0.3,
I find that I can no longer access LibreOffice Help - clicking on the
Help-button and then LibreOffice Help (F1) instead opens a new browser
window. This in contrast to the situation in LibreOffice 5.2.4.2, in which
the same procedure opens, as expected, to the help pages

A bug ? Has anyone else experienced this ?...

The usage with which I am familiar corresponds to that mentioned by James

«any unannounced regression is a proper subject for a bug report and a new

Hullo Ken !

There's a lot of wisdom in the old aphorism to the effect that if it ain't
broke, don't fix it, and Mint 17.3 works very well - even if I myself find
Mint 18 just a little bit better. In any event, someone on the Linux Mint
Forum for printers and scanners (
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=51) might be able to suggest
solutions for the specific problems you're having printing from LO Calc on
your Samsung laser printer - perhaps worth a try ?...

With regard to easily keeping your installation of LO updated on Mint, you
might want to consider installing the PPA (
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa). I can confirm that
it works like a charm, and you don't have to download and install the .deb
files yourself !...

The point, as I understood it, Brian, was that a means to automatically
turn off the autoformatting feature in the spreadsheets in MS Office,
LibreOffice, and Apache OpenOffice, which could be useful to many users,
particularly those writing scientific papers in which the confusion
described in the article, is lacking. Note also that Google Sheets seems to
be able to provide such a means

To imply, as you seem to do above, that users are simply careless in their
use of these tools is, to my mind, both false and ungenerous...

We seem to be discussing an entirely different issue from that which I
originally proposed. I hope Cristopher Ingraham will regard it as fair use
if I reproduce the content of the article below
 :

«A surprisingly high number of scientific papers in the field of genetics
contain errors introduced by Microsoft Excel, according to an analysis
recently published in the journal Genome Biology.

A team of Australian researchers analyzed nearly 3,600 genetics papers
published in a number of leading scientific journals — like Nature, Science
and PLoS One. As is common practice in the field, these papers all came
with supplementary files containing lists of genes used in the research.

The Australian researchers found that roughly 1 in 5 of these papers
included errors in their gene lists that were due to Excel automatically
converting gene names to things like calendar dates or random numbers.

You see, genes are often referred to in scientific literature by symbols —
essentially shortened versions of full gene names. The gene "Septin 2" is
typically shortened as SEPT2. "Membrane-Associated Ring Finger (C3HC4) 1,
E3 Ubiquitin Protein Ligase" gets mercifully shortened to MARCH1

Even worse, there's no easy way to undo this automatic formatting once it
has happened. Edit -> Undo simply deletes everything in the cell. You can
try to convert the formatting from "General," the default, to "Text," which
you might expect to change it back to the original characters you enter.
But instead, changing the formatting to "Text" makes the cell contents
appear as 42615 — Excel's internal numeric code referring to the date
9/2/2016.

Even more troubling, the researchers note that there's no way to
permanently disable automatic date formatting within Excel. Researchers
still have to remember to manually format columns to "Text" before you type
anything in new Excel sheets — every. single. time.
But even the genetics researchers among us are only human, and they
sometimes forget to do this. Hence, you end up with 20 percent of these
genetics papers containing preventable errors introduced by Excel.

The Australian researchers note that this problem was first identified in a
paper published more than a decade ago. "Nevertheless, we find that these
errors continue to pervade supplementary files in the scientific
literature," they write.

Genetics isn't the only field where a life's work can potentially be
undermined by a spreadsheet error. Harvard economists Carmen Reinhart and
Kenneth Rogoff famously made an Excel goof — omitting a few rows of data
from a calculation — that caused them to drastically overstate the negative
GDP impact of high debt burdens. Researchers in other fields occasionally
have to issue retractions after finding Excel errors as well.

The Australian researchers note that Excel isn't the only spreadsheet
program with overly aggressive autoformatting issues — the same errors crop
up in open-source programs like LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc
too.

They do note, however, that one perfectly free spreadsheet program did not
have any issues storing the gene names as typed — Google Sheets.»

Perhaps now we can get back to discussing the issue of overly aggressive
autoformatting in LibreOffice ?...

Nasrin, I'm unable to address your question about the compatibility of LO
5.2 with Windows XP with any certainty, but from earlier posts to this
thread, I've gathered that this has indeed become an issue, as developers
no longer wish to devote their time and efforts to maintaining
compatibility with so antique an operating system

As to whether operative systems using the Linux kernel suit for programmers
and professional users, I think the answer is unequivocal - yes they are.
Note, for example that of the 500 fastest super computers, 497 use Linux
(the remaining 3 use Unix). As to system requirements - I note that you
suffer from certain limitations in that regard - the following are those
listed for Linux Mint 18 with the Cinnamon desktop :

*System requirements:*

   - 512MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
   - 9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
   - 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows
with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

Notes:

   - The 64-bit ISO can boot with BIOS or UEFI.
   - The 32-bit ISO can only boot with BIOS.
   - The 64-bit ISO is recommend for all modern computers (Almost all
computers sold in the last 10 years are equipped with 64-bit processors).

If your machine meets the above requirements (which it more or less had to,
for you to be comfortable running Windows XP), then you're good to go. (As
noted in an earlier post, I recommend Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop,
as it is both reliable and very easy for former Windows users to get
accustomed to)

Good luck !

Bruce's «idea», at least as expressed on this thread, but to anyone using
an Ubuntu derivative, like Mint, it certainly saves a lot of trouble. Only
disadvantage is that one has to wait for the PPA to be updated, but that
generally doesn't take more than a few days after the publication of a new
standard LO version

That Java causes quirky problems is, of course, certainly true - it's just
that it's not the first place I'd go looking for a solution to Mr Cloud's
problems. But in any event, it's easy to turn off and check - if the
problem disappears, it is solved (and we know the cause), if not, it's easy

Tom, given the fact that Windows XP hasn't been supported (for ordinary
users)
since 14 April 2014, and thus security updates are no longer being
released, perhaps Nasrin's best bet would be to clone her Windows XP
installation and replace it on her HDD with, e g, Linux Mint 17.3 (which
generally speaking, is very intuitive and easy to use for those accustomed
to Windows). Or she might want to wait a couple of weeks until the standard
version of Linux Mint 18 has been released (I personally recommend the
Cinnamon desktop). In any event, when that is done, she should have no
problem installing VirtualBox on that machine, and then installing her XP
clone on VirtualBox. LibreOffice can then be installed directly on Linux
Mint

Tom (Davies), thought I'd mention that Java is enabled (1.8.0_91)
is enabled on my version of

LO 5.1.4.2, so it seems unlikely that OP Tom Cloyd's problem - which, as
noted above, I do not encounter - is Java- related. As in Bruce's case, My
version (1:5.1.4-0ubuntu1~trusty1) was downloaded and installed via the
Ubuntu PPA

Hullo Tom !

According to my experience, screenshots, like links, are stripped out on
the forum as a security measure. Saving them to a website and then
providing the relevant URL in a message to this forum would be one way to
get 'round the problem

May I ask what version of Linux you are using ?...

As can be seen here, using Linux Mint and the Swedish language as an

Nasrin, you might find the information contained in the last paragraph in
this TDF article (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/OpenGL) relevant to
your concerns :
Crash on program start

As of September 2015, our latest release (LibreOffice 5.0.2) comes with
OpenGL rendering *enabled by default*. This configuration might cause
problems with certain combinations of hardware and drivers, leading to
errors or even crashes.

If LibreOffice crashes immediately on startup, it will not be possible to
go to Tools ▸ Options ▸ LibreOffice ▸ View to disable OpenGL. In this case,
we suggest downloading this registry fragment
<https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=118060>, which will
disable the *UseOpenGL* parameter on Windows. On Linux, open the
registrymodifications.xcu file found in LibreOffice's user profile folder
<https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Default_location> and
change *UseOpenGL* and *ForceOpenGL* entries to *false*.

For more details, please see tdf#93546
<https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93546>.

 Hi :)
I think it is important to get some good comments in there quickly. It
would be good to do this to any other articles about LibreOffice too.

It is best to write more comments for articles that are properly
pro-LibreOffice so that their authors get seen positively by whoever
publishes such articles. Even negative comments about an article increases
the authors pay-packet and/or likelihood of getting further articles
 published.

Perhaps help people who claim to have problems in the comments sections.
They are probably MS shills (or whatever) but treating their 'problems' as
legitimate and avoiding being rude can often encourage people to try LO.
The typically rude comments tends to put most people off ime. Even 'just'
 signposting them (pointing them) to the official website;
 https://www.libreoffice.org/
and tell them to click on the Get Help menu is often seen as friendly and
helpful. I know it's trendy and clever to be rude and sometimes it is
difficult to avoid but it puts most people off OpenSource.

In the 4.0 review it rankles that ...
Err, of course most of his opinions are stated as facts - such as the
 ribbon vs proper-menu.

His problem with the Options pop-up requiring him to fix his Java settings
is unique to the only machine he seems to have tried. That problem has
never been raised on this list and no-one else i know of or have seen
comments or articles from has ever mentioned it. So his mention of it as
being a fact that everyone will have to contend with seems a little
 unfair.

However even taking those things into account his article seems
surprisingly pro-LibreOffice, in a back-handed sort of way.

 Tom :)

LibreOffice users might want to note that Nick Heath at *Tech Republic*
places

Windows 10 to download (

; obviously, not all reviewers are quite as negative as Mr Mendelson at *PC

second place - the first thing anyone should do after installing Windows 10
is to download and install Classic Shell (classicshell.net), which provides
the user with a genuine start button and start menu ;-)

average user. Toolbars which make it easy to find what one is looking for

ODT format. As pure as it comes.

There sure is. Search for TM and replace with TM (no quotes). Put the
cursor in the Replace with field and click Format... . Under Position,
select Superscript. You might not want to Replace All, or you will change
 things such as uTMost!

If I understand you correctly: there IS no way of replacing a string of
characters with mixed formatting (like normal + superscript).

Incidentally, you very probably shouldn't be using two superscripted
capital letters for this, but instead the single Unicode character TRADE
MARK SIGN (U+2122), which you should find in all normal fonts. Find this
at Insert | Special Character...; no need for superscripting.

I imagine that. However, xxxTM is the way the customer itself specifies
its product - as a registered trademark.
Would it be permissible (for me) to change that?

Thomas, as an addendum to Brian Barker's post above, on your Linux system,
the trademark symbol can easily be typed in as a superscript by holding
down «Ctrl + Shift» and typing «u» followed immediately (after releasing
the two keys) by 2122» and taking «Enter» = ™

Re: [libreoffice-users] Linux alternative helpsupport

2015-07-18 Thread M Henri Day
of installs of both types, I've
 found
the Linux installs to be simpler and a lot faster. Windows may get to the
login screen a bit faster but then you've got interminable updates to
install with reboots needed between most of them.

As for needing assistance, I find a lot more problems cropping up with
Windows than with Linux. And yes, most end-users aren't equipped to deal
with them but that isn't dependent on the operating system. However
 fixing
Windows problems is more difficult and sometimes even fruitless (e.g.
  Windows Updates that mysteriously fail).

I've used Linux pretty much exclusively (except for an income tax program
that I haven't got to work in wine) for 18 years. I find Windows to be
awkward and limiting. And after looking at Windows 8, it seems to be
  getting worse, not better.

Tom, you might want to take a look at Linux Mint (current version 17.2) ;
if you're using a desktop as your main box, I think you will find the GUI -
I personally prefer Cinnamon - far superior to Ubuntu's Unity (Cinnamon
can, of course, be installed on Ubuntu to replace Unity) and the OS is a
dream to use. On my triple-boot machine, it boots (from GRUB), for example,
much more quickly than Windows 8.1 Pro, which I keep around solely in order
to be able to help retirees with their Windows problems. It doesn't
require, as does Windows, that the machine be rebooted just about every
time a minor update is installed, and things like the BSOD simply don't
appear

So I agree with Jack Wallen - Linux *is* the answer to the question of
alternatives to Windows. I'd disagree with him just a bit when it comes to
«good» and «bad» Windows OSs - the problem with Vista (Windows 6.0) wasn't
the OS itself, which was, in fact, a great improvement over XP (Windows
5.1) - try defragging the same files on the two systems and you'll see what
I mean - but rather that it was released before the manufacturers of
peripherals like, e g, printers, had gotten around to creating drivers that
worked with it, which was a real bummer for consumers. Two years later,
when Windows 7 (i e, Windows 6.1), which amounted to a Vista SP with a
better GUI, was released, those drivers were in place, and everybody, i e,
Windows users, breathed a sigh of relief, Then came Windows 8 (Windows
6.2), a relatively minor upgrade from Windows 7, where the MS leadership
made the disastrous mistake of forcing the Metro GUI on all users. However,
all that had to be done to make the new OS work in a way familiar to
Windows users was to install the lovely little shell program from *Classic
Shell* http://classicshell.net , which gave users a GUI almost
indistinguishable from that of Windows 7. I don't know how many retirees we
have saved from throwing their computers out the window by this simple
expedient. In Windows 8.1 (Windows 6.3), Microsoft started a slow retreat
back to the familiar start button, but even here the installation of
Classic Shell was needed to bring relief to users who communicated with
their computers mainly via a mouse/touchpad and a keyboard, rather than
sweeping their fingers over a touch screen. I suspect the same thing will
be true of Windows 10

The nice thing about LibreOffice, is that it works like a charm with just
about any OS. Kudos to the developers, and to the people at the Foundation
who make their work possible !...

Re: [libreoffice-users] remove older version

2015-07-04 Thread M Henri Day
2015-07-04 18:01 GMT+02:00 Thomas Blasejewicz ny...@hb.tp1.jp:

 Good evening

I made a fresh install of Mint 17.1, 64-bit on a Dell Optiplex 745 machine.
 Mint comes with LibreOffice 4.2.6.3.
Since there is a newer version (4.4.4.3) available, I downloaded and
 installed it.
However, I now have under (Mint) Menu - Office TWO Libreoffice items
 each (Writer, Calc etc.).
In the newer version I am not able to modify / install an extensions.
 I get errors like:

Error while installing extension Alternative searching. The error
message is: an error occurred during file opening
The extension will not be installed.

Error reading data from the Internet.
Server error message: Could not read status line: Connection reset by
 peer.

 General Internet error has occurred.

Somehow I suspect, the old package gets in the way (this kind of trouble
 with extensions has NEVER happened
on any computer with ANY OS before) and I would like to remove it ...
 but don't know how.
Software Manager and Synaptic Package Manger show only ONE version of
 LibreOffice: 4.4.4.3.

Is there a trick to do this?
What are the chances this will solve the extension problem?
I am also wondering why the newer version did not replace the older one.

 Thank you.
 Thomas

Thomas, my experience with downloading newer versions of LibreOffice on
Linux Mint accords with yours, i e, the new version is installed *alongside*
the older one. The latter is easy to remove, both via Synaptic and from the
menu. As others have mentioned, installing the LibreOffice PPA is one way
of making certain that one always has the latest stable version ; I use it
myself. Why you can't get extensions to work on the new version is,
however, beyond me ; perhaps someone else who frequents our forum knows

Here it might be worth noting that the latest version of Linux Mint, 17.2
Rafael, has now been released with a mechanism that allows for an upgrade
to be done directly from the Update Manager ; I did this last night and it
took all of 2-3 minutes. The version of LibreOffice that comes with LM 17.2
is 4.4.3

Re: [libreoffice-users] security warning AOO

2015-04-26 Thread M Henri Day

LibreOffice 4.3.7, released yesterday, and LibreOffice 4.4.2, available
since early April, include a patch for the issue, and therefore offer a
real solution to the problem (and not a workaround).

  QUOTE

  CVE-2015-1774

OpenOffice HWP Filter Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service
  Vulnerability

A vulnerability in OpenOffice's HWP filter allows attackers to cause a
denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly
execution of arbitrary code by preparing specially crafted documents in
  the HWP document format.

  Severity: Important

  Vendor: The Apache Software Foundation

  Versions Affected:

All Apache OpenOffice versions 4.1.1 and older are affected.

  Mitigation:

Apache OpenOffice users are advised to remove the problematic library in
the program folder of their OpenOffice installation. On Windows it is
named hwp.dll, on Mac it is named libhwp.dylib and on Linux it is
named libhwp.so. Alternatively the library can be renamed to anything
  else e.g. hwp_renamed.dll.
This mitigation will drop AOO's support for documents created in Hangul
Word Processor versions from 1997 or older. Users of such documents are
advised to convert their documents to other document formats such as
  OpenDocument before doing so.

Apache OpenOffice aims to fix the vulnerability in version 4.1.2.

Re: [libreoffice-users] display

2015-04-24 Thread M Henri Day
2015-04-22 17:17 GMT+02:00 Thomas Blasejewicz ny...@hb.tp1.jp:

Good night = morning from Japan
I believe I did ask the same question in the past related to an
installation on a Win XP machine:
moving through documents (Writer) in LibreOffice while editing sometimes
(constantly!) sort of blurrs/freezes the screen.
That means, characters/lines/text sections disappear, look like
smeared ink or are displayer overlapping.
The problem is solved, by switching to another Writer document and back.
That's fine, but still rather stupid and happens ONLY with Writer (not
 yet noticed in Calc).

Computer: just bought a new one, running Windows 8.1 (= a nightmare!!!),
 8 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD = OS + 1 TB HDD
and probably a whole lot of fancy high-tech stuff I not capable of
 understanding.

So, I would LOVE to believe, that there cannot be any sort of
 insufficient power.

IS there a trick to convince the display to work smoothly???
 Thank you.
 Thomas

Thomas, this is a tad off-topic, but since you mentioned that «Windows 8.1

(= a nightmare !!!)», I thought I'd suggest two simple steps to tame the
beast :

   1. Install Classic Shell from *classicshell.net
http://classicshell.net* (elect the Windows 7 interface and change the
   start button), and
   2. Deactivate the superfluous Lockscreen by following the steps found
   here :

http://www.howtogeek.com/134620/how-to-disable-the-lock-screen-on-windows-8-without-using-group-policy
   */*

While not, alas, quite as good as dumping Windows altogether and
installing, e g, Linux Mint 17.1 instead, it should suffice to turn those
nightmares into relatively sweet dreams. I know it has for many retirees
here in Stockholm whom we help with computer problems

[libreoffice-users] Drawing arrows in Writer.

2015-04-16 Thread M Henri Day
The arrow tool in the draw function toolbar in, e g, Draw or Impress makes
drawing an arrow there a breeze, but the same toolbar in Writer (I'm using
4.4.2) seems to lack this particular - and very handy - tool. Is there
some way to get around this lack and draw arrows (other than block arrows)
in Writer ? If not, may I suggest that the developers consider adding this
tool to the draw function toolbar in this LO application, perhaps already
in version 5.0, which we have been told is in the works ?...

Thanks to all the developers for the splendid work they are doing !

Re: [libreoffice-users] Drawing arrows in Writer.

2015-04-16 Thread M Henri Day
2015-04-16 12:27 GMT+02:00 Tom Davies tomc...@gmail.com:

 Hi :)
 Good answer and very quick.

That makes it sound like it might be a relatively Easy Hack. If so then
it helps the project because it gives devs who are new to this project, or
people who are fairly new to (or learning) coding, to get practical
 experience in this specific project.

@ Henri please feel free to post a bug report but mark it as a feature
request instead of it being a bug as such. Hopefully the new
bug-reporting system makes it easy. The old system had feature request
as one of the options in one of the drop-downs. If it's not obvious in the
new system then just add something into the subject-line or summary to make
it clear that it is a feature request.

Also if it's a menu item then it might be possible to add it into a
customised menu-bar but i have no idea how to do that and find the idea a
 bit scary tbh.

It is always nice to have a work-around or two but it's even nicer when a
better longer-term solution is potentially on the way. Being involved in
helping make that happen feels really good and is one of the many
 advantages of OpenSource projects.

 Regards from
 Tom :)

Tom, the procedure suggest by Piet is, indeed, easy to follow - and, as a
matter of fact, is to be found via LO help
(I somehow managed to overlook it before posting). But since the arrow
tool is found in the draw function toolbar in both Draw and Impress, it
should not be too difficult to add it to Writer as well. This would
contribute to the latter application's user-friendliness

I have opened Bugzilla and shall now file a report, under «Enhancement»
under the category «Severity», which is the nearest I can come to the
«feature request» you suggested

Thanks for the tip !...

 Hi :)
 +1

Ahh, it sounds like Enhancement is the new word for Feature request.
I doubt the severity rating needs to be high and it's polite to keep that
as low as reasonably possible but as high as you feel it needs to be.

Good luck and many thanks from
 Tom :)

Thanks for your reply, Tom ! As noted above, «Enhancement»
 is listed under «Severity»
; thus no other severity rating can be assigned. Please take a look at
bug 90651 on Bugzilla and comment on it as you find appropriate
