I go in on windows 7 and open the document bc I have to with odt and then save
it to word and then odt changes it back again. Its highly annoying bc of the
volume of documents I have. Id rather use word, but want to keep odt bc it is

Pressing 'return' in Writer is not about inserting a newline, its about
starting a new paragraph. Just Newline is 'shift-return' - since normally
writer does all newlines dynamically the typical user needs a new paragraph
far more often than a new line - writer is not a old-fashioned

Rory correctly notes that OO 4.1.1 will open .doc file extensions.
However, there have been issues in some instances with .docx file
extensions.
There are work arounds for the .docx issues, but you should be aware of the
potential for issues with the .docx format.
