This certainly works. Console can be reached via a browser plugin or
Virt-Viewer (available for Windows). Self-hosted engine is the way to
go, and is production-ready, especially if you want to add more nodes later.

Yes but what about the student sitting on the Windows machine in the lab
who wants to install and interact with her VM via it's GUI ... like is
possible in Virtual Machine Manager on RHEL/CentOS 7 ... except she'd be
doing it remotely via an in-browser console ... like Digital Ocean do for
example.

Re: [ovirt-users] Educational use case question

2016-04-13 Thread Michael Hall
Thanks for the response.

I did see that page and certainly agree with the point under "Benefit to
oVirt" heading:

"This operational mode will attract users already familiar with it from
other virt platforms."

I'm happy building headless servers using CLI over SSH, but my colleague
and students aren't and need a "nice" point and click web interface which
will display a usable VM desktop etc. My colleague is most familiar with
VMware.

But the project doesn't look ready to go and I can't find a download.
Also, an implementation that isn't stable and fully functional will
probably do more damage than good as far as open source's rep in our lab
goes.

I know this isn't a use case that oVirt or RedHat are really interested in,
but I feel it is important to expose students to real world production
software and systems as much as possible ... all we had to work with last
year was VirtualBox running on Windows 7!

Try adding anonuid=36,anongid=36 to the mount and make sure 36:36 is
the owner group on the mount point.  I found this, http://www.ovirt.org
/documentation/how-to/troubleshooting/troubleshooting-nfs-storage-

[ovirt-users] RESTAPI and kerberos authentication

2016-04-13 Thread Marcel Galke
Hello,

I need to automatically create a list of all the VMs and the storage
path to their disks in the data center for offline storage for desaster
recovery. We have oVirt 3.6 and IPA 4.2.0.
To achieve this my idea was to query the API using Kerberos
authentication and a keytab. This could then run as cronjob.
Using username and password is not an option.

To configure oVirt for use with IPA I've run engine-manage-domains but
the result is not exactly what I'm looking for (despite from the fact,
that I can add direcotry users etc.).
Next I tried the generic LDAP provider as per documentation
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.5/html/Administration_Guide/sect-Directory_Users.html

It was quite easy to get Apache to authenticate against IPA, but I did
not manage to access the API. Each try ended with an "HTTP/1.1 401
Unauthorized".
At the moment Apache authentication appears first and then the RESTAPI
auth dialog comes up.
Some facts about my setup:
oVirt Host:
-OS: CentOS 6.7
-Engine Version: 3.6
IPA Host:
-OS: CentOS 7.2
-IPA Version: 4.2.0

I might mix some things up. Please help me to find out how to achieve my
goal. I can provide more information if required.

Thanks a lot!

Best regards
Marcel

Re: [ovirt-users] stalls during live Merge Centos 7 / qemu 2.3

2016-04-13 Thread Pavel Gashev
It really works. The bug is that engine doesn't update the state of
finalization step. Engine.log shows that finalization is actually finished.
Restart of engine fixes it. Also it's possible to fix it in directly in
database w/o restarting anything.

Hi,

I was just annoyed that during my tests I got a second error. For me
it seemed as finally everything worked fine. Although the single disk live
merge task was shown to be still running finally.

Nevertheless after Nirs explanation for BZ1326900 I'm unsure if the single
disk live merge really works. So we currently have the following situation:

Live merge (for all disks) stalls the VM

Live merge (for single disks) seems to work but logs give other info.

Deeper look into vdsm log show that the merge was successful, so we
have issue on the engine side, not displaying the state correctly.

Markus,

So all CPU threads are blocked by the main loop. The main loop is busy draining
IO requests from all drives while there are other block commit jobs active...
It looks like currently QEMU just can't live merge more than one drive
simultaneously without blocking VCPUs.

As workaround you can delete disk snapshots one-by-one, and then delete
disk-less VM snapshot. The Storage tab has Disk Snapshots sub tab where you can
remove a specific snapshot of a specific disk.

Thanks.  I'll go with the if api connects engine running if not engine

No need to convert anything, a2ef36fa-ecfa-4138-8f19-2f7609276d4b is
alreay the raw file you need. You can rsync it and rename it to myvm.img.

ID=$(grep $VMNAME -r master/vms/ | awk -F "/" '{ print $3 }')
// gives the vm id
  * find the disk id :
DISK=grep 'fileRef="' master/vms/$ID | awk -F ' ' '{print $5}'
| awk -F \" '{print $2}' // gives the disk id
  * Copy the image anywhere you want.
rsync -av images/DISK mount_point:/$VMNAME.img

Note, you can do the same directly on any file system storage
domain based, but be careful that the vm is down before.
If you want to do the same with a block storage domain, you may
use dd instead of rsync.

Yes it is doable by searching relative ids on the storage,
but the simpliest way to do such a thing is exporting your vm

Re: [ovirt-users] Ovirt VM to kvm image

2016-04-13 Thread Nathanaël Blanchet
On any host of the cluster, you will find the export domain mount point
under /rhev/data-center/mnt/MOUNT
Then, you can apply a succession of grep command to find the ids you
need form $MOUNT, for example

 * find the vm:
   ID=$(grep $VMNAME -r master/vms/ | awk -F "/" '{ print $3 }') //
   gives the vm id
 * find the disk id :
   DISK=grep 'fileRef="' master/vms/$ID | awk -F ' ' '{print $5}' | awk
   -F \" '{print $2}' // gives the disk id
 * Copy the image anywhere you want.
   rsync -av images/DISK mount_point:/$VMNAME.img

Note, you can do the same directly on any file system storage domain
based, but be careful that the vm is down before.
If you want to do the same with a block storage domain, you may use dd
instead of rsync.

[ovirt-users] Monitor your oVirt datacenter with Prometheus

2016-04-13 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi,

I created a blogpost on how to monitor your oVirt datacenter with
Prometheus [1].

This way you get access to real time metrics and can use the powerful
Prometheus query language, the Prometheus Alertmanager and visualization
tools like Grafana.

Tasks like finding hosts which are underutilized, finding VMs which are not
behaving or even comparing resource usage profiles of whole cluster over
days become only a matter of writing the right Prometheus query. Further
you can use the Prometheus Alertmanager for alerting.

An example which is also part of the post [1]: Visualizing the sum of the
CPU usage of all VMs for ever host is as simple as

sum(vm_cpu_user) by (host).

To close the gap between oVirt Engine and Prometheus I had to create two
services vdsm-prometheus (github[2], docker hub[3]) and
ovirt-prometheus-bridge (github[4], copr[5]).

An ansible role [6] to roll out vdsm-prometheus to all oVirt 3.5 or 3.6
hosts exists too.

So make sure to checkout the post [1] and let me know if you find this
useful.

Best Regards,
Roman

Yes it is doable by searching relative ids on the storage, but the
simpliest way to do such a thing is exporting your vm via the export
domain, then the disk will be in raw format on the nfs share. Finally,
you may manually redefine your vm properties to libvirt/kvm.

Ok, so you're aware about the limitation of the single point of
failure. If you drop the host referenced in hosted engine
configuration for the initial setup it won't be able to connect to
shared storage even if the other hosts in the cluster are up since the
entry point is down.

Note that hyperconverged deployment is not supported in 3.6.

This issue does not seem related to the single point of failure. Tested
this on a 3 node setup with each node mounting the volume hosting HE as
localhost:/engine. Since all nodes have glusterd running and belong to
same cluster, with any one node down - mount should continue to work.

But HE VM is restarted once a node is powered off.

Re: [ovirt-users] VDSM Won't Start

2016-04-13 Thread Charles Tassell

Hi Guys,

Thanks, I found the problem. I had edited the /etc/vdsm logger
config files to cut down on all the debug logging and the process failed
(silently in any system log I could find) due to a parsing error.
Restored the logger files to defaults and it worked.

For anyone going through the list logs in the future, try running:
sudo -s /bin/bash vdsm
python /usr/share/vdsm/vdsm

to get an error message.

In this case, you may want to define your ovs-based network in
libvirt (virsh net-define bla.xml) and use vdsm-hook-extnet to let ovirt
consume it.

Re: [ovirt-users] VDSM Won't Start

2016-04-13 Thread Charles Tassell

Hi Simon,

I tried that, but the same problem: vdsm won't start, so the deploy
can't continue. There is some sort of bug with running VDSMd, but I
can't find any error logging to say what that bug is so I'm at a loss as
to how to fix it.

Re: [ovirt-users] VM has been paused due to no Storage space error.

2016-04-13 Thread Fred Rolland
Hi,

Yes, just as Alex explained, if the disk has been created as thin
provisioning, the vdsm will extends once a watermark is reached.
Usually it should not get to the state the Vm is paused.

>From the log, you can see that the request for extension has been sent
before the VM got to the No Space Error.
Later, we can see the VM resuming.

Note that the extension is done on the SPM host, so it would be interesting
to see the vdsm log from the host that was in SPM role at this timeframe.

Fred

Re: [ovirt-users] VM has been paused due to no Storage space error.

2016-04-13 Thread Alex Crow

Hi,

If you have set up VM disks as Thin Provisioned, the VM has to pause
when the disk image needs to expand. You won't see this on VMs with
preallocated storage.

It's not the SAN that's running out of space, it's the VM image needing
to be expanded incrementally each time.

Cheers

Alex

You can run hosted-engine --deploy again and choose to redeploy using
the same host-id: it will reconfigure VDSM for you.

[ovirt-users] VDSM Won't Start

2016-04-13 Thread Charles Tassell

Hi Everyone,

I'm having an issue with one of my hosts. I was performing a yum
update when the box crashed and rebooted, which left a lot of packages
broken. I resolved the issue by running "yum reinstall" on all the
packages that were in the update, but since then VDSM won't start. I
can't find any error message as to why it won't start, just that it
won't. IE, I see this in /var/log/messages:

Apr 13 07:57:09 ovirt-01 ovirt-ha-agent:
WARNING:ovirt_hosted_engine_ha.agent.agent.Agent:Restarting agent,

Can anyone give me some ideas of how to debug this? Or even some docs

Re: [ovirt-users] VM has been paused due to no Storage space error.

2016-04-13 Thread nicolas

Hi Fred,

This is an iSCSI storage. I'm attaching the VDSM logs from the host
where this machine has been running. Should you need any further info,
don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks.

Regards.

AFAIK we don't have any rotation mechanism for that file; something
else you have in place on that host?

AFAIK our code will never take a ~ ending backup of that file.

Re: [ovirt-users] HA agent fails to start

2016-04-13 Thread Richard Neuboeck
The answers file shows the setup time of both machines.

On both machines hosted-engine.conf got rotated right before I wrote
this mail. Is it possible that I managed to interrupt the rotation with
the reboot so the backup was accurate but the update not yet written to
hosted-engine.conf?

 Hi oVirt Group,

in my attempts to get all aspects of oVirt 3.6 up and running I
stumbled upon something I'm not sure how to fix:

Initially I installed a hosted engine setup. After that I added
another HA host (with hosted-engine --deploy). The host was
registered in the Engine correctly and HA agent came up as expected.

However if I reboot the second host (through the Engine UI or
manually) HA agent fails to start. The reason seems to be that
 /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf is empty. The backup
file ending with ~ exists though.
