oVirt 3.3.3 release

We still have ~30 bugs targeted to 3.3.3 [2], please update target releases and
add blocker bugs to the tracker.

I asked for 3.3.4 target release to be added, but i think folks should
consider if to push bugs to 3.3.4, or to 3.4.0 by now.

I've added users mailing list, in case there is a specific bug someone
would like to highlight a specific bug that should go into 3.3.3 or 3.3.4.

I didn't try that. In principle it can. Note that it will only
backup/restore

If you try that, please report back. Thanks!

I currently need to move an AIO configuration from AMD hardware to Intel
I7 hardware. The engine-backup WIKI discusses backups, but not
restores. I am a bit concerned about using engine-backup to restore an
AIO configuration to a different system as another WIKI page with
step-by-step instructions to do what engine-backup does for you,
mentions you have to do some extra steps if you are changing hostnames
as the hostname of the ovirt-engine is embedded in the database.

Changing the hostname is specifically not in the scope of engine-backup.

Note that you do not need to have the hostname equal to the "fqdn" input
during engine-setup - this last one just needs to be dns-resolvable and
point to the machine intended.

Also, there is another utility to do that, called ovirt-engine-rename -
see this for details and implications:

http://www.ovirt.org/Changing_Engine_Hostname

There really needs to be some work done in Ovirt on making it easier to
import existing disk images and just generally moving things around
without having to bounce off an NFS server.

Should I do a BZ on that?

Not sure what you mean exactly, but you are always welcome to open BZs on

Sorry for going slightly off topic, but how is everyone's hosted engine
deployment going? Are you restricted to NFS?

Andrew, in general I get positive feedbacks from RHEL users. For Fedora
and other distros, this should be in a better situation in the following
1-2 weeks when we'll have 3.4 beta available.
I'd love to get your feedback on it.

I missed your NFS question, sorry;
Yes. Currently we have NFS limitation and we will do our best to see
if SAN can be added. Note that time is not on our side for 3.4.

worth mentioning you can use hosted engine on an iscsi/FC cluster - just
the hosted engine VM needs to be on NFS

I tried the migration procedure last month and it worked.. but had quite a
lot of issues so I ended up reverting back. I didn't open any bugs in the
assumption it was in super alpha stage.

Next time please open bugs... That's the best way to improve the project,
regardless of the version state. If unsure, you can always try irc / this
list
first to see if this is a known issue and if there are workarounds.

Hello,

I am evaluating oVirt as a replacement/alternative to VMware deployments
we typically do. I have installed and all-in-one setup on a test box
(which itself used to be an ESXi server), but it only has one NIC. I
trying to duplicate our typical configuration we do in VMware, which is
this:

1.) we create several "port groups" on the vSwitch, each assigned a
VLAN ID, such as:

   - VLAN001 (VLAN ID: 1)
   - VLAN002 (VLAN ID: 2)
   - VLAN009 (VLAN ID: 9)
   - VLAN010 (VLAN ID: 10)
   - VLAN200 (VLAN ID: 200)
   - TRUNK (VLAN ID: 4095 - in VMware-world, VLAN ID "4095" is "all
VLANS" and basically just passes the VLANs through to whatever is
attached to the port group for the VM to handle)

2.) We assign VMs to port groups appropriate for the VLAN they are
part of.
3.) The only VM that has a NIC assigned to the "TRUNK" port group is
the firewall (which is Linux), and we create VLAN interfaces on it
(i.e., "eth1.1", "eth1.2", "eth1.10", "eth1.200"). The firewall VM acts
as the router between the various VLANs.

To replicate the above in oVirt, I created logical networks for each
VLAN, and assigned the appropriate VLAN ID. It seems oVirt/KVM does not
have an equivalent for VMware's VLAN ID of "4095", so after some
searching around, so for the "TRUNK" network, I left it with no VLAN
assigned. Because i cannot add VLAN and non-VLAN networks to the same
physical NIC, after some searching around, it looks like I may have to
utilise two NICS: one for the VLAN networks and one for the "TRUNK" network.

That is true. One non-VLAN network can in fact sit on the same NIC with
VLAN networks, but it has to be non-VM.

This was devised as a security constraint - otherwise, a VM attached to
the non-VLAN network could sniff traffic from another (VLAN) network.
However, it seems that this is exactly what you need - a special VM that
is designed to do just that.

isn't that was promiscious mode (aka port mirroring) is for?

And it's not only you: there's another recent request for lifting this
limitation:
Bug 1049476 - [RFE] Mix untagged and tagged Logical Networks on the
 same NIC

However, I'm not sure that you in fact need a "TRUNK" VM network in
oVirt. If you want your firewall VM to get all traffic from the VLANs,
you could create a vNIC for each network, to which you'll attach a
profile (oVirt's equivalent of port group if I'm not mistaken) of the
corresponding network. The host can remain with just the VLAN networks
attached to its NICs, without a designated "TRUNK".

This way the firewall VM will get something like "eth1" for VLAN 1,
"eth2" for VLAN 200 and so forth, which might be close enough to what
you described on your previous setup (oVirt currently doesn't allow
creating VLANs inside VMs). And if I correctly understood your needs it
will save you the trouble you described below (well, you would need the
one dummy interface).

Because, at this point, I am not yet concerned with making the test VMs
I will be setting up be accessible from outside the virtual lab
environment (i.e., everything will communicate within my oVirt
server/network for now), I am trying to make use of "dummy" interfaces,
but I am not sure the best way to make use of this. I am able to create
the dummy* interfaces and have them show up in oVirt, but I am not sure
of how they should be setup. Here is what I am *thinking* should be
done, but want to make sure it is correct before getting too deep:

   - I will use the physical NIC for management, therefore the
"ovirtmgmt" bridge with eth0 assigned to it will remain as-is
   - Create two dummy interfaces: "dummy0" and "dummy1"
   - Create a new bridge, "ovirtvm" and assign "dummy0" and "dummy1" to it

This is something that currently can't be done from within the oVirt
engine, but if my above suggestion works for you then it won't be needed.

   - Attach the VLAN-enabled networks to "dummy0"
   - Attach the "TRUNK" network to "dummy1"

I do not understand what you are trying to do with dummy devices (after
all, they are not going to send any packet anywhere).

But if you are willing to mess with network configuration under the feet
of oVirt, you could do the following:
- create a network tagged with an id that is not really used in your
datacenter, say 999, and attach it to the host.
- build and install vdsm-hook-extnet rpm
- define a vnic profile using this network, and adding a custom propery
called "extnet" with the value of (say) "untagged".
- set up a bridge named "untagged" directly on top of your eth0 (say
   "breth0")
- define a libvirt bridged network named "untagged", that uses "breth0".
- attach the vnic of your firewall VM to your vnic profile.

Now, when you start up your firewall vm, the "extnet" hook gets into
action, and forces the firewall vm from

well, it could also be released async if it has too many issues, but

Hi

Is it possible to have oVirt engine installed on node1, while having
both node1 and node2 as the virtualization nodes?

Yes, it doesn't sound right at all for redundancy and etc. However,
I have a situation where I have two nodes in a small remote location
where I can turn them into virtualization nodes. I don't have
another system I can leverage for ovirt engine.Another option is
to use the oVirt engine at the main site to access these two remote
systems over a dedicated line.

Thanks

OK, so just so I understand this, in the described scenario of three

Is it possible to perform a new installation of ovirt-engine, add the
two existing nodes, and everything "just works"? Or would you at least
need to do some reconfiguring (e.g., re-add the logical networks etc.)

Basically, even though the nodes were part of the now-dead ovirt-engine,
there would be no problem in getting them added in to the
newly-installed ovirt-engine?

for now, you should backup the engine on a regular basis. once we close
the gap of 'import existing data domain' will be easier to recover even
without an engine backup (you'd still need to add the hosts of course).

Subject: [Users] virt-io SCSI duplicate disk ID

So twice now under oVirt 3.3.2 I have added 2 virtio-scsi devices to
a single
virtual host.

After doing so, the VM would fail to boot due to duplicate disk ID.
The first
time I thought it a fluke, second time’s a bug?

Fortunately they were empty data disks and I was able to get around the
problem by deleting one and recreating it.

  Markus,

Before upload, where was your image located? On the engine? On a different

machine?

  David

I ran the iso uploader on the engine host with direct access
to the file that I wanted to upload. Therefore I transfered the
file to /tmp on the engine and started the upload. In our
NFS case the file was created somewhere deep inside the
ISO NFS mount point. UUID folder structure see answer
before.

Having direct access to our NFS servers we simply tried to
place other ISO files in the same cryptic directory and
"tata" they are recognized. Conclusion: iso uploader does
not insert references to those files into the engine database.

Wherever your ISO domain is located you must simply
"find it with iso uploader". Afterwards you can move around
your ISO files as you like.

Well, I'll be creative and I'll suggest you the following idea.
There is an option to add a glance image server to RHEV as an external
provider.
This new feature allows you to export disks (not VMs) to the glance
image repository while the VM which the disk is attached to is running.
As for the VM configuration (which is not part of the disk that will
be exported to the glance server), there is an option (which was
introduced in RHEV3.3) to create a VM from a configuration file (OVF)
of another VM.

Dafna, Fede, Liron, Itamar, please back me up here. Will it be
possible to perform those actions? Can we suggest this idea to the
customer?

Heho,

Unfortunately yes, you'll suffer from a down time during this process.

Well, as the downtime could be significantly decreased/the comfort for
an "migrate one vm, then the next" largely increased, if an nfs storage
could be mounted on multiple datacenters simultaneous i wonder if such a
feature is planed?

Main concern for me is that it might not really fit into the current way
of handling storage in ovirt.

If this is possible, how can we get the data?
We could even write a vdsm hook, if necessary, but

No, I was told by someone else (in IRC I believe) that only Fedora could
be used as a node... I would much rather use EL6.5 (CentOS)...
What/where is the proper RPM for this platform?

That was true until during the oVirt 3.2 release cycle, but we have had
an EL6 Node for a while.

oVirt Node is a stripped down OS image - installing the Node packages on
a minimal EL6 install has also worked since the 3.2 series.

just to clarify - there are two types of hosts:
- ovirt-node - stripped down, ESXi like. some workflows of deploying
and updating it are simpler as its image based
- normal linux - just configure the yum repos, and ovirt-engine should
  configure everything else.

both types have fedora and .el6 support, and an ubuntu for 'normal
linux' type is making progress as well.

(and yes, it seems the ovirt-node one for 3.3 required a much needed set
of fixes)

Cannot have a non-VLAN VM network and VLAN-tagged networks on one

I think one option should be to provide the user, if not already
present/tested/supported, the opportunity to resize the LUN on storage
array and then run a rescan from oVIrt to see the new size and use it
without disruption of service.

3.4 adds this:
Bug 961532 - [RFE] Update storage domain's LUNs sizes in DB after lun
resize

please note:
- you can extend a *storage domain* by adding an extra LUN to it from
  ovirt-engine.
- you *cannot* resize the LUN from ovirt-engine, but you can do that
from the storage side, which in 3.4 will be reported by ovirt-engine
  via bug 961532

and on the general question - what i like about NFS is its way more
simple to work with, troubleshoot, inject and recover on issues.

also note, on iscsi, LVM has issues on scale once you pass a several
hundreds of disks or snapshots (per storage domain).

To avoid also LUNs proliferation on storage arrays that in general are
providing storage to many sources, also different from oVirt itself

it asks for the admin password to get the nfs path from ovirt-engine (if

Example:
- bond0 on my two systems are on the management network, untagged
- my VMs all have one connection to this management network
- I want to setup a new VM with two interfaces, one on the management network,

This will work it out?

You can make ovirtmgmt a non-VM, untagged (non-VLAN) network, then place

Here's a working upgrade procedure:
1) Edit ovirtmgmt, mark it as non-VM.
2) Go to all hosts using this network, select Setup Host Networks. You'll see
that
ovirtmgmt is out of sync. Edit the network and mark sync. Hit ok on the
dialog of course :)
Step 2 will be done for you automatically when you edit logical networks in
oVirt 3.4
3) Create VM, VLAN networks
4) Go to all hosts you wish to place those networks, and drag the new VLAN
networks on
bond0.

You don't need to do any prep work on your hosts before this procedure. oVirt
will take care
of this stuff for you.

Short answer, it really depends on your provider. But generally using a

I just had a client where we failed to implement any high available vm
platform due to the way they had set up their uplinks. We had to use an
api to do ip address failover but even then it was not possible to move
a subnet to a different machine. KVM/IMPI/DRAC was not possible and no
fencing devices available. Long answer you have to think about all the
things just like you would when building the cloud on your own hardware

Things you have to consider:

  * What kind of storage will you use local/glusterfs, iSCSI SAN, NFS
and how will this be connected to the nodes
  * How will you synchronize the storage between multiple
providers/datacenter? What kind of interconnect will you have
between providers? What will this cost me (not cheap!!!)?
  * What kind of interconnect is available between nodes
  * How will you manage ip failover between providers (BGP, multicast, ?)
  * What kind of connection do you have between the management server
and the ovirt nodes (ipsec, openvpn, dedicated line,
  * What are my SPOF's (Single Point Of Faillure)
  * What kind of fencing devices are available
  * Do the different providers have the same setup or is the hardware
different (predictability of performance)?
  * Will you have to share infrastructure with other clients?
  * What is your maximum acceptable failover/migration time between
providers?
  * I can go on for a couple of pages

Kind regards,

if using single hosts in each site, only local storage seems relevant

I also tried " browser plugin" option by installing spice-xpi on my RHEL6 (which runs the
firefox browser). Now when the console is launched, a popup window shows up but then an error
" Unable to connect to the graphic server".

Re: [Users] Create VLAN for WAN traffic

I'm not very knowledgeable in VLANs. Sorry for the lack of

Is it possible to create a VLAN for WAN traffic, to separate it
from the internal network? I'd imagine so. It was a automated and
simple process when use XenServer. I'm trying to switch from Xen
to oVirt and when trying to recreate this, I'm unable to ping out
from the VM.

This leads me to believe the VLAN was created incorrectly. I
created ifcfg-br1 on the host and through the engine, created the
logical network with VLAN tagging 20. Does the interface,
ifcfg-br1, require a public IP, any IP address, no ip address?
(Sorry, never created a VLAN for WAN traffic as it was automated
in XenServer)

Assigning an IP-address to a VM network in oVirt is _not_ mandatory,
it is only needed for "management" networks (ovirtmgmnt, display, storage)
where the _hosts_ need connectivity to resources on that network.

Is this a tagged or an untagged vlan? (an untagged vlan means only one
vlan
per physical interface andneeds no extra configuration on the OS side)
Which other (physical) interfaces are in your "br1" interface?
Are the (tagged) vlans assigned to this interface?

A vlan interface on linux looks like this: "eth0.20" where eth0 is the
"physical" interface on which tagged vlans are configured and 20 is the
number of one of those interfaces.

In the case of an oVirt VM network the physical interface is bridged
(and sometimes bonded)
so the interface configuration looks like this: "br1.20".

The "normal" route for configuring a new network in ovirt is to
configure it in the "networks" tab
(as a VM network) and then assigin this network to physical- or bonded
interfaces on all the
hosts in your cluster.

So the steps I have taken to create this.
1. Assign the 2nd physical interface a static IP.
2. In oVirt Engine, go to "Data Centers" and select "Logical Networks"
then "New". For name, something like "public_interface", check "Enable
VLAN tagging" and for the field entry, "20". Leave defaults, such as "VM
network" checked.
3. Go to "Hosts" then "Network Interfaces" then "Setup Host Networks".
Drag "public_interface" to the physical interface, "em2". Save
configuration.
4. This shows as "public_interface" (VLAN20) with the green box VM next
to it.
5. A fresh installed VM of CentOS6.5 is used with nic1 as
"public_interface".
6. After configuring the interface "eth0" with a public IP, I am unable
to ping any public IP or hostname.

Hopefully there's a flaw in the action I took to configure it and it's a
simple fix.

was this resolved?

Thank you,
Neil

From there I have the VM installed and configured with a public IP
address, however, only get Destination Host Unreachable, meaning
it has no route out.

I am banging my head on the desk trying to figure this out. Can
anyone give me any assistance?

Neil

mostly thin, but i wouldnt care about loosing the thin feature since the

well, no voodo for nfs to iscsi.

you can try and create the same VMs/disks (manually to check, then
script with a different vm name (due to uniqueness) on the new DC.

then try to dd the source disk to the target one.

unless your storage can somehow do such mapping of LVs.

3.4 will hopefully allow to attach both nfs and iscsi domains to same
DC, then you could try to move the VMs offline (or online) between the two.

Yes, I followed the step and it works as expected. However I want to
have VMs able to reach the mgmt network.

let's make it simpler.
eth0 - mgmt network, untagged, this is where I ssh to systems
eth1 - some other subnet

I have two nodes built and setup with ovirt. They run fine. ovirtmgmt
runs on eth0
But I want to have a VM able reach to both
 - mgmt network on eth0
 - vlanX on eth0

That's why I was testing different things
I added eth0.X for VLAN X under the OS, but it won't show up under oVirt.
I can add more physical interface to separate the traffic
 1. subnet for ovirt
 2. subnet for management traffic
 3. subnet for whatever subnet VM reach out to

W

this may sound weird, but why does the mgmt network has to be untagged?
you could just have mgmt network in a vlan as well?

you tried to define a vlan youself on the bond, or use a vlan via a
logical network over the bond via ovirt-engine (which should work)?

Well, I actually wanted to move the physical disk. There was 2TB of data on
it, and I didn’t want to move it via a GB network connection.

I ended up doing it using basically the method I posted yesterday…I shutdown
the old oVirt system, moved the disk to the new system. Created a new data
domain on the disk, then created new VMs and disks in the new data domain,
after the new disk was created, I just moved it from the directory of the old
data domain/VM into the new one and fired up the VM.

Instead of waiting hours and hours for 2TB of data to be copied, I moved my 4
VMs in a few minutes.

A way to attach an existing on-disk VM image is really needed.

if there is a disk you "injected" to an already attached storage domain,
you can detect and register it today via the REST API (register disk iirc).

still missing the UI for this one.

Yes this is a known issue, if you start remote-viewer foo.vv from a

not passed in the same way as if the program was started from the command
line, and this is very specific to OSX, so this bit is not implemented.
remote-viewer patches to add support for this are very welcome ;)

if you have experience with this, please describe the steps you are using
(also the source platform),

Sources:
- Existing KVM (virt-manager/libvirt) platform
- ESX
- ova/ovf templates from several sources

Methods:
- KVM:
virt-v2v with libvirtxml option, works reasonably well, most issues
are with windows guests where virt-v2v needs libguestfs-winsupport and
virtio-win (RHEL only)
- ESX:
virt-v2v which works reasonably well _if_ the right packages
(libguestfs-winsupport virtio-win) are installed.
virt-v2v can be used directly from ESX/ESX host (configure .netrc
first) but this is quite slow
another option is to export the VM as an OVA and then import it with virt-v2v
- ova/ovf templates:
hit and miss with virt-v2v, especially if they contain something
that is not a regular windows/linux guest.
Another option is to do a direct copy of the disks on a pre-created
VM, clumsy.

and how you would like to see this make simpler
(I'm assuming that would start from somewhere in the webadmin probably).

Webadmin would be nice, but better behaviour from existing tools would be
a nice start too.

For example: the flow with virt-v2v is
1) Analyze source, look for disks
2) Convert/copy disks to ovirt export domain
3) Try to add virtio stuff to the copied disks on the export domain

If step 3 fails ( which happens a LOT), the copied disks are removed.
This is very frustrating if you just waited a couple of hours for a large
VM (e.g. 200GB) to be copied :(

Some kind of graceful abort/resume would be VERY welcome.

The above basically come down to the fact that currently virt-v2v does
the copy first and the v2v step second. It was my understanding
[Matt?] that guestconv is supposed to do the v2v step first followed
by the copy, which should solve all of that.

would we focus on integrating with guestconv? how different from
virt-v2v from integration perspective?

Another issue with virt-v2v is that it _always_ tries to add virtio
drivers. I have a virtual appliance that contains some kind of
proprietary embedded OS: adding drivers will always fail, give me
some option to override that and configure simple ide / e1000
hardware for the VM

I suspect in this case what you really should be doing is just copying
the source disk image, without using virt-v2v at all.

Rich.

I think having an option like --vm-resume would at least

User can start engine vm in paused mode ,connect to it and

It was paused due to the connection loss to the NFS server,
I would assume
once the connection is restored it could attempt to restore
it? But I can
try dig up the vdsm logs if you want, they would only be a
few hours old

I think having an option like --vm-resume would at least
hide the reason of
having to dig into virsh and messing with authentication at
the very least.

if the vm is paused it will not be auto started - so I

you expect to change? virsh requires authentication
regardless to hosted
engine :)
Leonid, did you do any testing there?

I think that what you want is to take a file that you have that contains the
image of a disk and create a disk in the system with the same content.

As far as I know we don't have any direct way to do this. You will need to
create an empty disk in oVirt, and then attach it to a virtual machine. Once it
is attached to that virtual machine then you can write to it, but always via
the virtual machine. For example, you can use the API as follows to create a
new disk that isn't attached to any VM:

curl \
-k \
-X POST \
-H "Accept: application/xml" \
-H "Content-Type: application/xml" \
-d "

   newdisk
   1073741824
   raw
   virtio

" \
-u admin@internal:** \
https://rhel.example.com/api/storagedomains/the_id_of_the_storage_domain/disks

Then prepare a VM that you will use to copy the contents of your file to the
new disk, and use the API to attach the new disk to this VM (you can preserve
this VM, and use multiple times for this purpose):

curl \
-k \
-X POST \
-H "Accept: application/xml" \
-H "Content-Type: application/xml" \
-d "

" \
-u admin@internal:** \
https://rhel.example.com/api/vms/the_id_of_the_vm/disks

(Note that in order to attach the disk you have to provide the disk id returned
by the API when you created it.)

Then activate the disk, so that the VM can see it:

curl \
-k \
-X POST \
-H "Accept: application/xml" \
-H "Content-Type: application/xml" \
-d "

" \
-u admin@internal:** \
https://rhel.example.com/api/vms/the_id_of_the_vm/disks/the_id_of_the_disk/activate

Now you will have to copy the contents of the file to the disk via the VM. For
example, assuming that you have SSH enabled on that VM and that the disk device
inside the VM is /dev/vdb (it won't allways be this, depends on the number and
order of attached disks) you can do something like this:

ssh root@myvm 'cat > /dev/vdb' < myfile.img ssh root@myvm 'sync'

Once the contents of the file have been copied you can deactivate the disk and
detach it from this intermediate VM, and maybe attach it to another one.

Take into account that all these operations are lengthy ones, specially the operation to
create the disk, and that the RESTAPI will usually return once the operation is
initiated, so you will need to wait till they are finished. For example, when creating
the disk you should poll the state of the VM till it is "ok".

I don't remember if virt-viewer detects the vnc in the .vv file.
but you should have the vnc password and connection details in the vv
file to manually connect for sake of testing.

you should also be able to use ovirt cli utility to connect to a vm

On your PC, create a dummy NIC via:
sudo ip link add dev dummy_0 type dummy
sudo ip link set dev dummy_0 up

It's important that the name will be in the dummy_* format.

Following that, go back to the GUI, select the host and hit Refresh Host

You should see the new dummy_0 device as a host NIC.

Create a VM network, and under the host Network Interfaces tab hit Setup Host
Networks.

Drag and drop the new VM network on dummy_0 (Don't give dummy_0 a boot protocol

in the edit network dialog).

At this point you should be able to attach VM vNICs' to the new VM network and
they won't
be physically connected to any other network, but they'll be able to talk
amongst themselves.

The "private network" feature is planned* for oVirt 3.5, so in the future
you'll be able
to just define a network as a private one and everything will work
automatically.

Subject: [Users] networking: basic vlan help

Hello again,

I'm new to VLANs and have a few questions. Right now I just have the mgmt
interface (bridged with eth0) on my all-in-one oVirt test setup. I want to
separate some VMs from the public facing net, which I think means that they
need to be on a different VLAN. I created two new networks, pubX and
privY, with vlan ids X and Y, but couldn't assign them to eth0 because the
current mgmt network is non-VLAN. I was about to enable VLAN tagging on the
mgmt network, but I wanted to make sure that doing so wouldn't do anything
to eth0 that would disrupt access to it (I only have remote access and don't
want to lock myself out). Also, if it is safe, does the mgmt vlan tag id
matter? is 0 the right value?

Any/all help, hints, tips or references to examples/links greatly
appreciated.

wouldn't disabling 'vm network' on the mgmt network to simply allow the
VLAN'd networks for VMs be simpler?
also, since this question/use-case came up several times past 2 weeks -
do we have a good enough user feedback on why user can't attach a
logical network to the same interface, suggesting there is a non-vlan'd
network visible to VMs, and that if they want to use VLAN'd networks on
the same nic, they should disable the 'vm network' role on the
non-vlan'd network?

data from the agent (through vdsm)?

I'm guessing that you're missing ethtool and/or python-ethtool? (sorry

Both have python-ethtool, which is a dependency of the guest agent.
And vdsm does report correctly - I am pretty certain it's a problem in the
engine and not on the host/VMs.

The problem is that you need a different qemu-kvm package for live snapshots.
At the moment the only way to get this package is building it from the srpm:

This version should probably be included in the oVirt or CentOS repositories.

basically, for fedora its 'pc', which may have some live migration
issues between different versions in the same cluster.
for .el6, its 'rhel63/rhel64/rhel65/etc.', which is a stable definition
of emulation mode for the cluster (i.e., even a .el7 host should live
migrate to .el6 if we specify its emulation mode as rhel65, etc.)

engine defines per cluster level the expected emulation mode.
vdsm reports from libvirt from qemu, so engine can check the host is a
match.
if the first host in the cluster is fedora, it will be set to 'pc', if
its .el6, it will be set to the 'rhelxx' option.

Steve,
What is the CPU load of the GlusterFS host when comparing the raw
brick test to the gluster mount point test? Give it 30 seconds and
see what top reports. You’ll probably have to significantly increase
the count on the test so that it runs that long.

- Nick

Gluster mount point:

*4K* on GLUSTER host
[root@gluster1 rep2]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rep2/test1 bs=4k count=50
50+0 records in
50+0 records out
204800 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 100.076 s, 20.5 MB/s

Top reported this right away:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  1826 root 20 0 294m 33m 2540 S 27.2 0.4 0:04.31 glusterfs
  2126 root 20 0 1391m 31m 2336 S 22.6 0.4 11:25.48 glusterfsd

Then at about 20+ seconds top reports this:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  1826 root 20 0 294m 35m 2660 R 141.7 0.5 1:14.94 glusterfs
  2126 root 20 0 1392m 31m 2344 S 33.7 0.4 11:46.56 glusterfsd

*4K* Directly on the brick:
dd if=/dev/zero of=test1 bs=4k count=50

  7719 root 20 0 000 D 1.0 0.0 0:01.50 flush-253:2

Same test, gluster mount point on OVIRT host:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rep2/test1 bs=4k count=50
50+0 records in
50+0 records out
204800 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 42.4518 s, 48.2 MB/s

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  2126 root 20 0 1396m 31m 2360 S 40.5 0.4 13:28.89 glusterfsd

Same test, on OVIRT host but against NFS mount point:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rep2-nfs/test1 bs=4k count=50
50+0 records in
50+0 records out
204800 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 18.8911 s, 108 MB/s

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  2141 root 20 0 550m 184m 2840 R 84.6 2.3 16:43.10 glusterfs
  2126 root 20 0 1407m 30m 2368 S 49.8 0.4 13:49.07 glusterfsd

Interesting - It looks like if I use a NFS mount point, I incur a cpu
hit on two processes instead of just the daemon. I also get much better
performance if I'm not running dd (fuse) on the GLUSTER host.

The storage servers are a bit older, but are both dual socket
quad core

opterons with 4x 7200rpm drives.

A block size of 4k is quite small so that the context switch
overhead involved with fuse would be more perceivable.

Would it be possible to increase the block size for dd and test?

I'm in the process of setting up a share from my desktop and
I'll see if

I can bench between the two systems. Not sure if my ssd will
impact the

tests, I've heard there isn't an advantage using ssd storage for
glusterfs.

Do you have any pointers to this source of information? Typically
glusterfs performance for virtualization work loads is bound by the
slowest element in the entire stack. Usually storage/disks happen to
be the bottleneck and ssd storage does benefit glusterfs.

-Vijay

I had a couple technical calls with RH (re: RHSS), and when I asked if
SSD's could add any benefit I was told no. The context may have been in
a product comparison to other storage vendors, where they use SSD's for
read/write caching, versus having an all SSD storage domain (which I'm
not proposing, but which is effectively what my desktop would provide).

Increasing bs against NFS mount point (gluster backend):
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rep2-nfs/test1 bs=128k count=16000
16000+0 records in
16000+0 records out
2097152000 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 19.1089 s, 110 MB/s

GLUSTER host top reports:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  2141 root 20 0 550m 183m 2844 R 88.9 2.3 17:30.82 glusterfs
  2126 root 20 0 1414m 31m 2408 S 46.1 0.4 14:18.18 glusterfsd

So roughly the same performance as 4k writes remotely. I'm guessing if I
could randomize these writes we'd see a large difference.

Check this thread out,

http://raobharata.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/qemu-glusterfs-native-integration/
it's
quite dated but I remember seeing similar figures.

In fact when I used FIO on a libgfapi mounted VM I got slightly
faster read/write speeds than on the physical box itself (I assume
because of some level of caching). On NFS it was close to half..
You'll probably get a little more interesting results using FIO
opposed to dd

yes. you can view the code of the image uploader[1] which handles
uploading to the export domain - i.e., you don't even have to do so
yourself and can use the image-uploader (well, to upload it back, i
think we're missing the 'download' part)

virt-v2v also does that btw (pushing its output to the export domain)

an other way?

you should send the engine an API call to either shutdown the VMs, or
migrate them to another host.

moving the host to maint before killing it is also a "nicer" behavior.
if the VMs will die, no via the engine, then the HA ones will be
restarted on another host.

live migrating them if possible would be better than kill/restart.
(but if you ask engine to stop them, rather than migrate them, then you
also have to own starting them again)

For a planned shutdown of a host, you should move it to "maintenance"
mode (which migrates all VMs from it) or shut down the VMs individually.

If the host unexpectedly dies, it would be fenced by Engine.
Highly-available VMs that were running on it, would be re-started on
another host. You can mimic such a condition with logging into the host
as root and doing
 service vdsmd stop
 pkill qemu-kvm
(and may the force be with your guest's data)

Would it be safe to just move the hosted-engine VM to

I thought of copying all files in /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine*
to a second ovirt node and starting the VM there... any objections?

Anyway, I'm here to test new things once the issues I've

hosted engine supports running on *multiple* nodes, providing out of the
box HA between them.
the setup should ask you if this is the second host and take care of all
the right things to copy.

(iirc, copying by yourself without knowing the internal details is risky
if the first host could still be used. better to add the 2nd host per
procedure, then keep or remove the 1st host)

Hi,

During the POC we discovered that users which have expired password
cannot log on. They receive an
Incorrect password error message.

1. They should at least receive a Your password has expired error
instead of the Incorrect
password error message as this is confusing for the user.

3.3 has the motd to provide some info/url to IPA password changing.

I've installed 3.3 as a test and I can see that it's now correctly
advising the user that his password has expired. But it does not provide
the user with an option to change his/her password.

2. This creates a problem, as every time a password is reset in IPA,
it's automatically set to be
expired so the user will change password at next logon.

Is there a way around this?

use the IPA web form to change the password by the user.

This is a manual process for the user to be aware of and will generate
calls to the helpdesk. I believe it would create a much better user
experience to allow the password to the changed as a part of the login
procedure.

Or adding an option to work the same way as our current Secure Global
Desktop solution allows us to do; Logging in the user with the expired
password, and then the password is being changed as a part of the login
procedure to the Linux Desktop.

And this is a scenario that will be coming up often, as that every time
a new user is added or a password is reset for an existing user in Red
Hat IdM, the password is set to be expired so that the user is forced to
change it on next logon, and no option is provided in Red Hat IdM to
work around this.

In our environment the users who will use the Linux VDI solution through
the User Portal will be using a Windows desktop and this will be their
only link into the Linux environment where they're required to log on
using a username and password from Red Hat IdM.

the problem is each authentication provider has a different method to
change password (no standard for this).
as a first step, we added in 3.3 the motd option (message of the day),
you can use that to put a text specifying in case of password
expirtaion to use the IPA web url.

we'll another tweak to manage domains, to allow specyfing the password
expirtation web form change url per domain, and show it for password
expirtaion.

then we can look about actually supporting this for specific providers.

I've got a RHEV 3.3 test environment up running, and I'm trying the motd
option you recommended. I can set the UserMessageOfTheDay using
rhevm-config sucessfully, and I see the message displayed on the User
Portal web page.

However any attempt on adding an URL (to the IPA server) with a tag or without any html tag, displays the URL and not a link the
user can click on as expected. Neither can I copy and paste from the MOTD.

Is there any way to produce a clickable link in the motd? Or at least
allow cut and paste from the motd?

Siggi

backported to 3.4 via http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/23622/

thanks for the pointer. The documentation at [1] describes the
required steps to setup a second node. Unfortunately it failed
for me because my second node was added to the cluster before [2].

why would both your hosts have the same uuid?

Even manual setting the second node to "maintenance" and back
to state "up" didn't help, hosted-engine-setup as unable to
detect the host's state [3].

you opened or made sure there is a bug for this i hope?

Though following the steps was enough to start the hosted-engine
VM manually on the second node. This makes a manual failover
possible, which is sufficient for now :)

Thanks

iirc, the REST API supports both setting (or receiving if not setting)
the password + setting the timeout.

by passing:

password

Thank you so far! I will look into these hooks too.

Is there an engine-config value or is
